*****Official Class of 2012 Columbia Acceptance Thread*****

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I am planning on living in a dorm my first year. Anyone here doing the same?? Is this a good idea or a bad idea??

I am actually thinking about doing the same since I don't know NYC that well.
Do you know how likely we will be able to get CUCDM housing?

is there even housing at that campus? regardless, you should live next to the McDonalds there. You'll be really close to school and really close to the only place there to eat.

I heard that Georgian is the best place to live on campus b/c it's the closest and the price is good...anyone have any opinions? Is it hard to get a room at the Georgian??
thanks! 🙂

I hate fast food...I hope thats not the only place there to eat...

The towers are very nice also... They have some of the sweetest views in Manhattan in my opinion... I live off-campus b/c my home is so close to campus and I was not given housing b/c they go by mileage... And there was no was that I was going to commute from New Jersey.
There isn't a ton of food options but some of our faves are two of the deli's nearby, Columbia deli and University deli(original right?), there's a Subway and Wendy's around the corner, a good pizza place Cuomo's a few blocks up (NOT famiglia's... ) as well as an Indian place that I personally like (try their na'an sandwiches... awesome), and various others that I'm not as familiar with, (Dominican, bagel places, fried chicken...etc)
However, the A#1 choice of a ton of first years is Dallas Barbecue, which is right next to the bookstore on Broadway. They have an awesome special there that has blackout hours between 12-2... but if we have a break in our schedule at 11 odds are you will find about 5-20 of us eating there... A roasted (not fried) half chicken, potato, and a huge slab of corn bread for 6 bucks... Unbeatable...

Would you recommend the Towers over the Georgian? Do you recommend living on campus to save money and be closer to the school? Lastly, should we be applying for housing NOW?
thanks! 🙂

Do we have to re-submit our DAT scores again to Columbia as stated on the Completion of credentials? What are you guys take on this???

I would recommend the towers over the Geogian, for several reasons:
1. you're closer to most of your other friends. The towers and Bard are clustered together, while the Georgian is a separate dorm off by itself, 2 blocks away. Granted, it's only 2 blocks and you should be able to walk that much to hang out with your friends...but people get lazy! Bard is also the headquarters for the gym and package pickup as well, so it's more convenient in that aspect.
2. The towers have a nice view and setting. The Georgian is right next to the homeless shelter
3. and the G is right across the street from the ER/ambulances. Depending on your room in the G, if it's facing the streetview and you're a light sleeper, there's a good chance you'll hear ambulances at random hours of the night.

The only drawback I can think of is that the Georgians are a little cheaper (slightly though) and closer to where the classes are.

Thanks for all the info everyone! the Towers it is (I am a very light sleeper so I can't sleep with any noise)! I just can't wait till I get my housing packet!!! 😀

Does most first year students live on campus?

We don't have to collect any teeth right? (sorry thats something I would reallllllly hate doing...)

yeiii!! Got the letter today!!😀 Happiness and joy!!

Few students in our class got on-campus housing. Once you get the forms, send them in IMMEDIATELY if you want on-campus housing. Despite their claims, they don't actually give preference based on from where you are coming. If you don't get housing, though, don't panic -- there are comparable apartments in the area.

NYPD is pretty good about noise complaints, so if you live off campus, you should be able to get a quiet place. (Avoid living right on Broadway, of course)

Out of 77 students...29 received housing, of those 6 are from NY...however...31 of the 77 are from NJ or NY..

23/46[out of state students...not including NJ]=50% received housing.

[Remember, not all of the out of state students needed housing, so the chances of getting housing is slightly higher.]

you receive housing app in march...I think...and def FedEX [not USPS or UPS or DHL...use FedEx!] ALL of your app overnight...and always call to double check if your stuff is here or not ...and Towers is def the best way to go. Three blocks from the school and one from the gym[Bard Hall]. Grocery store directly across the street thats open til 130am!

Congratz!!!! I hope mine is coming soon. Did you get a letter or email?

It was a letter. My mom called me yesterday and told me. It was the most nervewrecking thing since my mom doesnt read english so she had to spell out every word on the letter! After about an hour, i was sure!! 🙂

YAY! I got my letter today...snail mail to my parents in Texas! 🙂 I'm 100% going...

Got my packet on Tuesday. My first (and probably only, at this point) acceptance, so I'm super excited. I live in Brooklyn, so I'll probably be staying here for at least the first year. It's a bit of a commute (about an hour on the D and A or 1) but I don't really mind. I've lived in NYC for going on 4 years, so if anyone has any questions about finding a place to live, feel free to PM. Congratulations everyone!

What packet? sorry i am still waiting on my housing application packet and I am getting impatient! lol...

Hey Guys!! I have just created a facebook group: Columbia University College of Dental Medicine Class of 2012

Join if you're comin'!! Oh, and I'm not good at creating group descriptions, so if anyone has any idea, lemme know!! See you guys in August!

Well, by packet I mean large envelope with lots of paper inside. I haven't gotten a housing application packet yet.

Can I ask you guys why Columbia? Besides the fact it is a ivy league school??

I'm in! I'm very much looking forward to the coming four years.

We don't have to collect any teeth right? (sorry thats something I would reallllllly hate doing...)

You will need teeth some time during 2nd year, for restorative and endo. Granted, the teachers/school will provide some teeth for the class, but those teeth tend to be in bad shape. It's much easier if you collect your own, that way you have your own pick of teeth that are in better condition to work on. And even during 3rd/4th year, to garner more endo points, you can always work on extracted teeth (and the teeth that the teachers have are REALLY old and broken down, best to bring your own). Just drop off a jar (with concentration 1:10 of bleach:water) this summer at your local oral surgeon.

Congrats everyone! PM me if you guys have any questions...

Hi all,

I just missed a package delivery today and I am wondering does Columbia send out letters by UPS?

I am dying to know!

Thanks

so we only need a few?? I just don't see how I am suppose to get a jar full! LOL....

The UPenn thread has 5100+ views and the Columbia thread only has 3800+ views! We need to work on this!!! 😱

Anyways, I can't wait to attend Columbia this fall! Everyone needs to join the Columbia College of Dental Medicine 2012 Facebook group if they haven't already! We need more members! 😀

even if you don't collect anything, the professors will always have enough for you (even if the teeth are half-rotten.) but anyway, don't even worry about that right now. worry about having as much fun as possible between now and end of August.

congrats everyone!

Got acceptance letter.
Many offers from other schools, it was a tough decision until now. Can't wait until classes start

Thats good to know! However, I am getting my wisdom teeth extracted soon...I have been putting that off for a while now and thought I better get it done before dental school starts, and I am realllllly NERVOUS about this!!! :scared:
But I guess thats 4 teeth that I have collected. LOL... should be enough?

I got into Harvard, Case, Penn, NYU, Tufts, Temple, Detroit Mercy, Stony and Columbia
It was a hard decision, but its Columbia for sure for me

I got waitlisted~ damn~ i really wanna go to columbia...

my stat is ~3.5 GPA...and my DAT score is decent...22AA (23 Sci) and 24PAT...

What are my chances of getting in...?

any recommendation for me to increase my chances?

Hang in there. Dr. M told us they are making a point this year of not over-accepting. The waitlist will move once people decline thier offers

i would contact dr. mcmanus for sure. maybe you should write a nice email and explain why columbia IS you first choice and tell him you would love to attend.

interesting~ what made you decide Columbia over Harvard (well...the most selective school w/ almost perfect specialty match rate) and Stony Brook (like half the tuition)

You have PM. 🙂

Maybe he got a big scholarship to Columbia???

Don't give up hope. The waitlist for Columbia is a pretty good place to be, from what I understand. I was accepted off the waitlist today, but I declined. Be prepared though! It was a call from an unknown number and it turned out to be Dr. McManus! I got a little star-shocked...so I must have sounded like an idiot. But it's ok... Anyways, there's at least one spot floating around!

Congratulations to Hanzo! Columbia over Harvard, eh? That must have been tough.

Yeah tough decision but honestly based on what i am looking for in a dental program and what i have witnessed at each of the schools, Columbia was clearly the right choice. Talking to dental grads and current students finalized my decision. Plus I love NYC.

Its funny that some of you out there seem to think i made a ridiculous choice.. lol. Its almost as if there is an unspoken ranking list 😉

But honestly columbia is a perfect fit for me and thats why i made my choice. It will be interesting looking back on this post 4 years from now to see where i stand on the issue

haha. not a ridiculous choice. I didn't even interview at Harvard so I wouldn't know too much about the school. It's just that it's probably the most difficult school to get into. Low supply + high demand = high price/ranking. That's all.

Anyways, congratulations on your choice. Columbia is a great school and has a great program. Good luck to all you royal lions.

I heard orientation starts on Aug 18 and classes start on Aug 25. Are those dates what everyone else have?
