Official Comp Class Of 2011

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I finally looked over the materials they gave us during orientation. There is a pamphlet that lists all the businesses near western (downtown pomona). Apparently there are about 16 food establishments including a starbucks near the school.

Here are some interesting links:

I just found out i got accepted to COMP. I'm really excited! 😀

Hey everyone,

Thought that you may be interested in some statistics from U.S. News

For the class of 2005:

Average GPA - 3.45
Average MCAT - 8.9; V: 8.5 P: 8.9 B: 9.6
Accepatance Rate - 23.1%
Percentage interviewed - 25.6% total
Percentage accepted from interview - 90% total

Congrats to all the applicants who have heard at this point.

How sure are you about that percentage accepted from interview figure?

The reason im asking is that I have been invited for an interview and if im applying this correctly (provided the figure is true) then I have a 90% chance of gaining an acceptance from WCOMP now?

I guess im just concerned that the % interview vs. % accepted doesn't take into consideration the total # of those accepted post interview and only accounts for the students who matriculated or vica versa?

Thanks!

ps. either way im excited because WCOMP is high on my list of top choices.

I answered you somewhere else also, but my calculation was based on (total # accepted) / (total # interviewed). If you're really interested,

OOS: 281 accepted, 312 interviewed
IS: 261 accepted, 289 interviewed
Total: 542 accepted, 601 interviewed

All of them hover around the 90% mark. As I said in you question in another thread, take it with a grain of salt. COMP itself says it's a 2/3 chance. Mind you that not all of the acceptances are just acceptances. They are those who have been accepted off the waiting list also.

Percentages are just confidence boosters. It is up to you to make a good impression, if not a great one. Relax and be yourself. You have been pretty active on SDN, so you should be fine. Best of luck!

The quote below is from another thread about comp. I thought I would add it here.

I don't know what's happening at other DO schools but here are some reasons to go to COMP:

1)COMP just completed a univeristy research center and will build more and has added research oreinted professors to its faculty from places like Stanford and Princeton.

2)Will start construction of a new large DO building in 2007.

3)highest GPA/MCAT average of all DO schools, if that says anything about the quality of your future classmates and how COMP is perceived by hospitals/organizations that care about numbers on paper.

4)Will add and run 15 new residency programs in cooperation with a well-respected health care system within next 2 years, well by the time class 2010 graduates. Dean said he plans to start up those programs with COMP students since it will be all run by COMP faculty/administration and they will know us better personally. Students asked "which 15 specialties?" Dean said "if you can list 15, it'll probably be in there." Residency programs also mean more spots for clinical rotations in 3rd & 4th year that will be exclusively COMP.

5)There is an active ongoing process to turn downtown Pomona into a hip university vilage/work-live typ of deal.

6)And of course the number one reason is: 60+ degree sunny days in Dec - Feb. With med school being so stressful, you have no idea how the sun could keep you motivated and sane and we take it for granted here.

I'm a 3rd year at COMP. Just want to let you guys know that I feel very happy with my training and preparation during my 1st 2yrs. We started clinical rotations in June and I've talked to many classmates about our experiences and it seems very common that we find ourselves much more prepared than students from other schools(both MD&DO). There were even times when we COMP 3rd year students were teaching our interns(from other schools) a few things or two and it's about clinical stuff so it's not because basic sciences are fresher in our minds. Not sure if it's the case for every student in my class but it's common from the ones I've been talking too.
I remember when I was in your shoes when I really didn't know much about COMP and what I was buying into. Just want you guys to rest assured that you will be very well prepared for both boards and clinical rotations if you study hard and believe in yourself and believe in the curriculum.
Another good news is that AOA convention just took place in Las Vegas this week and out of the 3 top 1st prizes in the research poster compeition, 2 were awarded to students in my class, although one of them might say TCOM since she just transffered there this year but it was the research she did during her 2yrs at COMP.

That's pretty awesome. Thanks for the post!

i knew COMP was high on my list for a reason...thanks for the great informative posts!!

The added benefit is that I dont have to leave my homestate of Cali to go to school... a huge plus for me since all my family is here.

My interview is in a couple of weeks...so we will see how it goes....

Thanks for the info. I really like the school after my interview on Oct 16th. I learned a lot from the orientation and the students there. I was seriously impressed by how students at Western are willing to help each other out. It has definitely moved to very high on my list of schools. Now, I am anxiously waiting for the decision. It's only a week from my interview.......I'm very nervous!

Is is a cohesive environment 🙂 Best of luck! You should be hearing pretty soon.

hi all, I have not yet heard from COMP. But I was wondering, for those of you who did, did you get a big package or small envelope for the acceptance letter? The reason I ask is because I live in an apartment complex, and bigger package usually won't fit in the small mailbox we have, so they will just get send back to the PO.

It was a small regular-sized envelope with two pieces of paper in it. Most of your information will be provided via the website when you submit your deposit or next year.

hello all, i'm a first year here at COMP. congrats on making it this far! i love it, and I love my classmates. everyone is really friendly and the faculty is exceptional. Dr. Rega, one of the anatomy professors, just got recognized as one of the top educators of the year. if you need advice about the school, and if you have any questions and want honest answers, feel free to IM me: Leok2nv

Congratulations to all you future Western U. COMP D.O.'s, class of 2011. I'll be joining you there too. See you in August 2007.

well, I had my interview on Nov.2nd, and now I am anxiously awaiting my fate at that school.

I hope I get the great news that all of you did!

Thanks for the information HODoc, I get to see what you were talking about today in MAIL! YES, I'm officially accepted to Western U!!

I received my acceptance letter yesterday. 🙂

I found out from Western yesterday that I'm in too - I've also gotten into Tour-Vegas and am waiting to hear about AZCOM.

Life's good.🙂

Congrats TraumaTim. Seems like you're west coast all the way.

Hey guys, just got in on 11/9/2006. I'm so happy, COMP was/is my first choice. HELL YEA

First off, congrats. It's always good to sit on an acceptance letter.

It's good to see the enthusiasm... running low on that since we're going through our first BCBM exam. (ugh)

If you haven't noticed, the biggest strength of the school is the students. I can't tell you how much the second years have helped so far this year. And within our class, we're pretty helpful all around, so if you guys have any questions, don't hesitate to ask any of us, seriously.

Hope to see you all next fall. Enjoy your last true free summer for the next... well... crap, can't even see where that's going to happen... 😀

Since the deadline for COMP is coming up soon, how many people here will be actually attending COMP?

I think there's a forum set up listing people who intend on attending a certain school. If you have not added yourself on Western, it would be nice that you do so. 🙂

How long after the interview did you guys hear back from COMP for a decision? My interview is on 11/30. Do you think I'll hear a response before 12/14? That's when I have to put in my deposit for KCUMB.

10 days, so maybe.

Hey what's going on. There's some kind of flame war going on over "astounding statistics" in my WesternU mailbox.

Hey what's going on. There's some kind of flame war going on over "astounding statistics" in my WesternU mailbox.

Apologies for that. There are a few who love to start SPAM wars - but just so you all know - the admin has repeatedly sent out it's SPAM policy - that using the class distribution lists for junk like that can land you before the Student Performance Committee (SPC). SPC can then recommend bad things and it goes on your record. So that kind of thing doesn't usually happen, but it happens sometimes. Hopefully you guys won't have to deal with it.

I'm a 2nd year, and I don't get on to SDN much but you can shoot questions my way. My westernU email address is the same as my login here, obviously with @WesternU.edu at the end. 🙂

Good luck!

Hey all, congrats on your acceptances! Here's some info about the 2010 class...

http://www.westernu.edu/xp/edu/admissions/do_profile.xml

Let me tell you, coming from undergrad in Nebraska, it's awesome to have warm weather into November!

We're in the middle of a bunch of exams and fun stuff like that, but if any of you have questions, let me know! Shoot me a PM.

As far as living, I recommend Chino Hills, there are tons of apartments or houses available, once you get emails and are on the listserv for your class, there will be more and more housing offers. I found mine from an email that was sent to the class and I'm really happy with where I ended up living! Personally, I really like being able to get away from Pomona and from school once class is over. Just a thought...

The landscaping looks great 🙂 They recently opened up more of campus to us!

Hey guys, congratulations on your acceptances!

I just wanted to drop in and offer a little information that I wish I had when I was in your shoes re:northwest track.

Keep in mind when reviewing the contract and speaking with Dr. Foley and Dr. Finley that the school does not guarantee your return to your home state for your third year core rotations. They only guarantee your return to the "northwest region."

This was a major misunderstanding among my fellow nw-trackers, and the source of some frustration.

As it turns out, there are currently only core rotation tracks in Tacoma, WA and Southern Oregon. Secondly, there are fewer tracks in Tacoma than there are students from Washington. Furthermore, track selection occurs via a lottery.

I am personally happy with my choice to join the NW track, but some of my classmates are frustrated at the prospect of potentially not returning to their home state. I can understand that sentiment-the whole attraction of the program was to be able to return home (a lot of us are UW rejects), if we can't return home, then why bother leaving California for 3rd year, where the rotations are very strong and well developed?

Just wanted to throw that out there, not to discourage anyone, but only to provide some clarity. I get the sense that the faculty is working very hard in setting this up, and I have a lot of faith that we are going to have a great experience. Also, I am happy with the school and the curriculum so far.

Lastly, I am growing to love the area! It was 80 degrees yesterday (mid November)!!!! Back home its 50 and raining for the last couple of weeks....

Feel free to PM me if you have any questions about the NW track or anything else.

Take care,

Red

Red

Just for a bit of clarification - there are approx 12 tracks each in : Tacoma area (with some Poulsbo, Seattle & Centralia rotation sites), Portland, Or (with some Gresham, Vancouver, etc) and Southern Or (Roseburg). There are also some additional choices in Corvallis, Medford and Boise - but they aren't full tracks yet in those locations. I am NWT and have DO2008 friends and everyone has had awesome things to say about the rotations that they are in this year (their 3rd year). They've said they are very strong sites with very few other med students/interns to compete with & they feel they get more one-on-one attention at most rotations than their counterparts in the California roations because of that.

It is a lottery system, but 90% of DO2008 NWT got one of their top 2 choices of tracks. There are 3 rounds of rotation selection and I don't know anyone in DO2008 who was unhappy with how their rotation turned out. Of course, there are more people this time around who'd like Portland, OR than there were last time, so we'll see how it turns out, but I wouldn't count on it being a problem before it actually is.

Also - the contract only specifies that your cores required rotations be at particular places. Most of 4th year is elective - those you can do just about any where you can find someone willing to precept you - from East to West coast, it's all an option.

I've been a curriculm rep and have learned my way around the system some... if any of you have questions about the NWT, feel free to email me at my WesternU acct - again, address is same as my username here. I'm currently procrastinating as I have my 3rd exam in 6 school days in the morning and my brain is tired of cramming. 🙂

Good luck on your journey. If you've been accepted and have time to kill - start learning your bugs (clinical micro made ridiculously simple) and your drug classes... How I wish I had known and done a bit before starting. 🙂

I am new to the website but was extremly excited today when i found out i was accepted for next years class

I just want to say thanks to all the people that have been posting this year. This site really helped me out, especially for what to say for the interview. I'll be seeing you guys next year unless Loma Linda accepts me...

Good to know that you'll be my classmate. See you at COMP...
