Official Comp Class Of 2011

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I'm going to Western as well. Wow, this thread is so dead, compared to the others..!

Did anyone get the early anatomy program invite yet? The one where you take a fast paced summer course and then TA during the school year.

I'm qualified GPA wise, but not so sure MCAT wise. Just wondering if anyone got a response from them or if I didn't make the cut.

Do u have to fill an application or something? I didn't receive anything but then again didn't fill a form.

I didn't fill out any forms either. Were we suppose to? I assumed it was automatic.

Harrypotter, did you qualify as well?

hi lyso, it seems we are the only ones going to western in the fall! what were the qualifications? thx

Hello everybody! I was accepted a couple of weeks ago and am going to be there this fall! Western was one of my top choices (Southern California is home and I am here to stay). I am very excited to meet you all and can't wait for orientation!😀

Wow, I can't help but comment cuz this forum seems to have died...

COMP 2011... NWT!!!

YEEEAH!

Where are the good spots to live??? Is HB too far??? I just filled out my FAFSA deal... how long will that take? Can we get some loan cash for a computer??? what should I get??? Should I get into the summer anatomy deal? when does it start? whats the student : teacher ratio in that summer class?

cheers

HB (Huntington Beach) is 40 miles away. You drive up the 57N freeway to Pomona. That could be a killer 1 hour (or more) commute. West Covina, Covina, Claremont, Upland, Rowland Heights, and Diamond Bar are nice communities. They are a 10 minute commute to Western COMP. Claremont is attractive to the college & graduate students because of the nearby Claremont Colleges.

The Intensive Summer Anatomy Course is a 7 week program of postcranial anatomy (back, thorax, upper limbs, abdomen, pelvis, lower limbs) that starts June 18th and ends August 3. I was told by the department that applications for the ISAC program go out late March or early April.

You seem really excited to be accepted! Congratulations and see you in the fall at COMP...

Kealaq,

What's up? I was wondering if it would be possible to communte from Long Beach? If I remember correctly you are from south LA and don't plan to move. You take the 57 from Long Beach also right? What is traffic like that direction early in the morning?

Hey D,
I just googled mapped Long Beach to Pomona...its 45 miles! Yeah, you take the 605N to 91 to 57N. On Monday-morning, check www.traffic.com for the local commute times. I would say that freeway traffic is bumper-to-bumper congested most mornings.

I live in the San Fernando Valley which is northwest LA, not south LA. Don't plan on moving, so my drive will be about 52 miles. That is about 1.5 hour drive one-way. I am looking to taking the commuter train which runs from downtown Los Angeles to downtown Pomona. Western COMP has discount monthly passes for the students who commute on the train.

Hi everybody, I interviewed on 1/9 and got in two weeks after. I am from Pasadena and I really like my city (20 miles from the school). COMP is my first choice because of its location, since I don't need to move .SO WHERE IS THE PARTY AT FOR COMP, CLASS 0F 2011???? I hope there is lot of girls in this class.

I forgot to mention Pasadena?!? My favorite city. I enjoy walking down Colorado Blvd or Fair Oaks Blvd in the middle of the summer. Pasadena is a great town.

hey guys.. i interviewed on jan 22 and just found out i got in!! ive decided im definitely going to western. i live in cerritos which isnt too far but im probably gonna get an apt closer to campus. i'm looking forward to meeting all of you in august!

Hello all,
I just interviewed at COMP yesterday (seems like such a long time ago though) and I absolutely loved it! Keep your fingers crossed for me bc if I get in this is where I'm headed! 😀

good luck to you!! i hope your interview went well.. by the way how old are most of the people on this thread??? im 23 i'll be 24 by the time school starts

Thanks! I do too. It's the waiting that's making my stomach turn at this point and I'm finding it difficult to concentrate on school. 😉 I'm 22 and I'll be 23 before August rolls around.

Also check Claremont for rooms, the Claremont Colleges' students leave town in mid-May and you can get a jump on them if you're coming in the summer. There are a lot of little rentals in people's backyards near the "village" area. Sometimes they are advertised in the local newspaper that comes out on Wednesday and Saturday, The Claremont Courier.

I just found out on Monday that I got in to Western, and I just sent in my deposit yesterday! I'm really looking forward to it. I will be 24 when I start, and I had almost given up hope that it would happen for me. It's crazy, I had a 3.87 GPA and a 28 MCAT and I didn't get anything from five of the six allopathic schools that I applied to. Not that it matters, because I tend to find my medical philosophy more in line with osteopathic medicine. Since I'm coming from Washington, can anybody give me any help on where NOT to live? Rent everywhere seems exorbitant ($1100 for 500sqft?!) but I guess that's So Cal. I would appreciate any insight you might have

hey guys, i have an interview in march and I am trying to book my returb flight home. what time does the interview usually end? thanks!

Well, I interviewed at 2:30 and was done at 3:10pm. But I know the latest interview slot was from 3-3:30 and you don't know when you'll interview until you get there.

I stayed at the Shilo Inn Hotel and their shuttle service pretty sweet. My experience in a nutshell:
3:10 - done at Western
3:15 - called shuttle
3:45 - shuttle came
4:15 - arrived at Ontario International airport

Latest you should be done is 3:30 and definitely make sure to take into account that it is SoCal and there will be traffic. One of the interviewees I talked to had scheduled her flight for 6pm and was going to try to take an earlier flight since she finished sooner than expected. But better safe than sorry! 😉 Good luck on your interview and feel free to PM me if you have any ?'s.

Hey Rogerswife,
Congratulations on getting into COMP and the NWT. I too am very excited to start school. I will be 28 when I start...never gave up hope on a dream. Whether allopathic or osteopathic, we all want to be great physicians someday! I am confident that Western will get us there.

Coming from Ohio five years ago, it took me a while to get used to the expensive cost of living in So Cal. I drive everywhere for work & gasoline is expensive too. Some students may feel uncomfortable with Pomona, but their are other communties that feel more safe. Look into Claremont, Upland, Diamond Bar, Chino Hills... You probably want to be a short 10 minute commute to Pomona.

See you in the fall.

Where's the best place to live on campus or close to campus? is Helix any good?

Why is this thread so dead? Come on Westerners. Lets bring this thread to life. I definately don't wanna have boring classmates.

haha. believe me, if I get in, you'll be asking me to stop posting on this thread!

😀

Does anyone know what the drive time is between Pasadena and Pomona? I was thinking about living in that area. I notice that you could take either the 10 or the 210 towards Western.

As other people had mentioned here, I was also thinking about Claremont, but i've had several friends who went there for undergrad, each of whom spoke about how much Claremont sucks. I don't know if that's just the typical "undergrad" speaking and with me being a little older and "maturer", if i would enjoy that area?

Any insight?

I am sending in my second deposit in a week or so. I'll be there.

Congrats to everyone that got in this week 👍. And good luck to everyone else that's got an upcoming interview or is waiting for a response!

I interviewed on Jan 22nd also and got an acceptance Monday, I'm really excited because I thought Western was great. I'm sending in my deposit in the next few days and at this point I'm pretty sure I'll be joining you guys. Looking forward to meeting everyone in August. btw I'm 26.

ngodwin, I think I was talking to you before interviews (I was the guy from GA), grats! it looks like your interview went well 👍 .

From talking to Western students that sounded like a great area to live, but I think that medical students would appreciate a bit more quiet and security while undergrads would look for a cooler scene. Only problem I have found with Claremont is that it's a lot more expensive than other areas. It'd probably be great as long as you could afford it. Rancho Cucamonga is further east (closer to Ontario than to Pomona) but was also recommended by a 1st year.

does anyone know (or where it may be found) what the average score on the comlex 1 and usmle 1 for western students is? Also, does anyone know if there is a waitlist for the Helix? I've been at their website and it just seems like its a first come/first served type of thing. Thanks. And CONGRATS!

I don't know if there is a waitlist. I was there a couple of weeks ago for my wife's veterinary school interview, and we tried to look at a couple of the model apartments. We went by twice, when someone should have been in the leasing office, and there was no one to be found. On that note- has anyone seen the warning posted outside the door of the Helix? It says something like this "Some of the contents of this building have been proven to be carcinogenic. The tenants are have been informed of this prior to their lease". Anyways, that kind of turned my wife and I off from the Helix, but we didn't even get to look at an apartment.

On a more positive note- Congratulations to all of you who have been accepted! I certainly hope we have a cool class. From my impression DO students tend to be a bit more down to earth than their MD counterparts.

Agreed on your DO impression.

As far as Helix goes, the outside appeared very nice and I've heard that is is very modern inside. You also can't beat the convenience of its location.

On the other hand, while interviewing I didn't hear anyone with anything positive to say about it or living right in Pomona. I did hear that if your going to live in Pomona, then the Helix is by far the best place to do it.

Not sure about that carcinogen warning, seems odd 😱

Not sure about the averages, but I've never seen those from any school. One of the professors told us their COMLEX 1 pass rate was 94% while second year students told us it was 96%. Either way its really good. USMLE 1 pass rates were lower, they said in the 60-65% range, but didn't say definitively.

That's a standard disclaimer sign. You'll see it posted here and there. Doesn't mean the place is a toxic dump or anything.

Yeah I thought is was pretty odd also. My guess is that it is a very old building, and most likely contains asbestos. It does look nice from the outside, and I would definitely think it would be your best option if you chose Pomona. I am really wanting to live in Long Beach (Belmont shore is sweet!), so I might be doing some commuting.

Thanks for the info. Do you if it is asbestos?

That building didn't exist 3 years ago.

I'm on the alternate list for Western U. Any knows about the chances for me to get in? I've got Lecom- Bradenton acceptance, How long should I wait for Western?

Thanks

Were you waitlisted recently? Just a guess, but you should start looking to hear something after interviews are done. I was on a waitlist last year, I didn't hear a peep until after their classes had started. They told me I was rejected (duh?). You'll probably want to at least hold your spot at LECOM-Bradenton, just because waitlists can be so unpredictable.

Last year, 15 people got accepted from the "high alternate" wait list, but you will find out late because their application deadline is mid April and they will not make decisions on waitlist movement until the deadline has passed.

Dude...Huntington beach is hella expensive...I live there and it is easily 2,000 or more for a one bedroom...you might be able to find something 10 minutes inland for 1600. Its insane...HB would take you an hour to commute in the morning..better off to live in san dimas....I used to live there...not bad...san dimas canyon road apartments arent bad...I had a buddy live there...about 10 minutes from campus. If you ahve more questions, let me know.

How do people afford the high rent of Huntington Beach, I know only a few might do that, but just for example? Is it just additional student loans, help from family, or something else?

Room and board allotment in the student budget is what, $1000 per month? Would you take an extra $12k private loans to pay for that $2000 rent? Does anyone really do that or do people just go in with roommates?

Also, what is a realistic number for renting a small house closer to school, i.e. Chino, San Dimas, Ontario, Cucamongo?

Also, there are cheaper areas around San Bernardino, how bad is it driving 45-60 minutes each way? I wouldn't consider that ideal, but it seems pretty common in southern Cali. If any 3rd or 4th years have opinions on that I'd appreciate it.

hey-

I got into Western in the beginning of December and pretty sure I'll be there in August. I'm from NY and pretty excited for some sunshine. Just a couple quick questions:

-do you know of the set date we start orientation? I can only find the '06-'07 calendar online.
-are any of you getting emails on banweb? i haven't really tried signing on but I want to start looking for someone to share a 2-person apartment at the Helix.
- If you get on the list for the Helix, when should i expect to hear from them/are my chances of getting something there pretty good?

looking forward to a fun summer and seeing you all in August, thanks!

I haven't been able to find a 07-08 calendar either, but I haven't looked for more than a few minutes. I guess after seeing last years, I just settled with orientation in early August.

I just signed in to the e-mail, but can't sign in banweb yet. If you got your e-mail address already then you would just go to mail.westernu.edu for e-mail.
I did get one e-mail already for a home rental for $1990 😱

I have no idea on Helix, but I figure if you sign up now you should have a good shot though, so good luck. Anyone else know about it?
