PhD at UMass Med. My father has a ranch in the hill country in S.A. and I visit him often. If into UTHSCSA, I will decide whether to just take the M.S. and start med school or put it off for a bit. I would have 2-3 more years. Plenty of research experiences in med school anyways.

You can do that? I'm in a MS program in Houston...and I was told that not finishing the program would be looked poorly upon by the schools...

Actually, one of my interviewers at UTHSCSA dropped out of a PhD in science to enter med school. He grilled me and then told me that. He asked "can you see yourself dropping basic research and just see patients?" I said that I certainly could and that it is important for one to figure that out. I officially received the M.S. in 2001 and if I am accepted on Feb 1, I will have to make some decisions. I will be 30 when I start in 2004 and 40 by the time I am board certified in the specialty I would like to practice.

I asked UTHSCSA if they required that I finish my masters to be accepted. They said they didn't care so long as I had my pre-recs done. They said I could just confirm that by calling Belinda Chapa - (210) 567-6080.

are there any other midwest applicants on this post hoping for a texas admit? i've got some family down in San Antonio, and i'm crossing my fingers for there.

for all you texas peeps, what you ya'll think my chances of getting into UTHSCSA are? i interviewed in Sept...thought it went well. my mcat is just average, but i have an awesome GPA and extra currics/publication/etc.

does San Antonio typically have any waitlist movement for those out-of-staters?

Unfortunatly in-state or out-of-state UTHSCSA has very little waitlist movement. But I wouldn't worry about it till it happens.

did anyone here have decent numbers (mcat:30+, gpa: 3.7+) and not get interviewed by UTHSCSA... yet interviewed by other texas schools? for some reason i've got about 5 friends who have pretty solid numbers... none of whom got invited at all. isn't that a little weird?

if all they had was numbers then uthscsa probably did not interview them. they place heavy emphasis on a student's extra curr. activities and volunteering experiences.

I agree. I think Dr. Jones tries to look at the applicant as a whole and when I interviewed there I could tell that the students were really quite well rounded. Not saying people with good numbers aren't, but maybe they slacked a little in their essays considering they had good numbers and thought that was enough. I think also it depends on when they finally submitted their application also. If it was later, I believe it is harder to get an interview slot, good numbers are not.

These schools are based mostly on numbers. I know Baylor is and from stuff on the forums, I would consider the other three to be also. Baylor does accept some with lower numbers, but those are mostly people who are already accepted with the combined programs that Baylor offers.
