Not that I took the MCAT or anything, this past August, but just because I feel like you all should have a thread like the one Crazy Cav had for us in April..........

Here it is, your official Countdown thread...................

As of now, you have 54 days, 3 hours, and 1 minute left til score release..........

Good luck!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! 😀 😀: 😀 :luck: :luck:

You people actually have parents who cares about your MCAT?

Mine really don't, they have this super pre-conceieved notion that it was impossible for me to do bad on it... so even more pressure riding on the fact that I get a good score... I really wouldn't know how to break it to them if I didn't 🙁

its gonna be crazy having to break it to them..
yea mom dad i failed the mcat, going to have to need $200 more for retake, and $1400 for kaplan course, oh and ill be living at home in the year off because i have no money and dont want to work so i can study for the mcat again.
That should go well, and im not much of a tears guy so sympathy is harder to get 😀

well, i hope you do great, but if you don't do well it doesn't mean that you have to drop all that $$ on a review course

So like, whats the difference between "Adsorb" and "Absorb"?

adsorption
: the adhesion in an extremely thin layer of molecules (as of gases, solutes, or liquids) to the surfaces of solid bodies or liquids with which they are in contact
------------------------------
absorb
1 : to take in and make part of an existent whole
2 a : to suck up or take up

I looked it up - on the net, of course! 😀

I went to the dentist aka the butcher for my semi-annual visit today to kill some time. (No offense to pre-dents/dental students out there. I just don't like going to the dentist, but it was something to do.)

*changes the subject away from MCAT.* I hear ya. I dislike going to the dentist, but not for the reasons most people probably do. I have to pre-medicate with antibiotics, and they always end up killing the good bacteria as well, which leaves me feeling miserable in about 12 hours after the first dose. I take 1000 mg penicillin/amoxicillin before and after the cleaning, filling, whatever, for a total of 2000 mg within the space of 12 hours. I also have TMJ, so holding my mouth open and getting x-rays isn't too fun either.

If I could, I would probably put off going to the dentist for years. I'm really good at putting off these things. Unfortunately they make your next 6-month appointment when you are in the office, so it's not like you can say "I"ll call later when I figure out what my schedule is," or something like that. So I have no excuse. I did cancel my cleaning last November because I was sick for two weeks. I didn't go back in until a few weeks ago. 😛 Let me just say that Diflucan is my best friend after having my teeth cleaned. 😳

We have less than 24 hours left, peeps! 😱

I am so not going to sleep tonight... got a huge Biochem midterm comin up tomorrow immediately followed by an Evolution in-class essay where I'll spend 45 minutes on my introduction and then 5 minutes writing the body (I hate in-class essay tests 😡 ) Oh well... least there's SDN to keep me company right 😉

"Evolutionary Analysis" by Scott Freeman and Jon C. Herron. This one and then we have to read this garbage "Beak of the Finch" book by Jonathan Weiner. Our prof. said it was either this book or actually reading Darwin's Origin of Species... so I guess I can't complain too much... still sucks major rear-end though 😡

oh yeah--we had to read this stupid book by Pigliucci called "Denying Evolution" let's just say my prof basically uses this class as his soapbox

Just to add to the nerdiness and geekiness that is SDN, I took three years of Latin in high school, and "ab" means "away or away from," while "ad" is "to or towards," 😳

sometimes the Latin helps immensely in figuring out unknown words, but other times people botch up the literal meanings (like on Jeopardy!) and it's totally not what the translation says it should be.

"duct" is "to lead or draw," so like in "aquaduct," it's the water draw or the water lead. (pronounced "leeeeed" and not "lehd." 😀 Lead (Pb) in your water is not good). Also where the Pb comes from, "plumbum." Okay, I'll stop now. I really need to go to bed.

Oh, and Arsenic, shouldn't you shout "clear!" before shocking people? Or do you mean 'people' in the plural form? Like not only your patient but the other people around the bed as well?

yeah--my evolution prof raves about how latin can help you understand species names--yippy!!

Yeah, so I've been staring at the same powerpoint slide for about 15 minutes now... I never knew glucose had so many friends (isomers). Why can't nature just freakin be still... nooooo, everbody wants to rotate around themselves and make funky shapes 😡 (I just so took the nerdy/geek crown with this post 😛 )

word from the experienced. don't waste your time checking the forums. if you need sleep for tommorow get sleep. your MCAT score won't change no matter when you check it! good luck on your journey to med. just remeber if you want in, it will happen it just takes time or a trip to the tropics 🙂

Seriously though, get sleep. Hard work pays off in the end.

glucose has funky friends

ooh ooh, I want to join in the nerd competition.

So here is my random biochemistry facts:

Glucose goes to G6P which goes to Fructose which goes to F6P which goes to F1,6BP which goes to 2 3 Carbon molecules that are also isomers of each other abbreviated DHAP and GAP aka G3P. DHAP converts into G3P via the Triose isomerase enzyme TIM. Now the 2 GAP go through the 3rd phase of the cycle to eventually lead to 2 net ATP and 2 pyruvates to enter the TCA CYCLE.

Ok I'm done.

Hey, the TCA CYCLE is not the only fates of the 2 pyruvates :meanie:
