you may tease me about the snow, but for just the reason that I just got back from my morning run and even though it's like 68 outside it feels disgusting humid. Gross, gross, gross. 😡

In case you guys didn't hear, DMU let Becky Grissom go. Not sure of the details.

Hey Everybody--

For those of you who interviewed, did you ever get a copy of the picture they took on interview day? I thought one was going to be emailed to us. I was just wondering.

That's a bummer about Becky.

Hello to all of you future DMUers!

I'm macman-a current OMM fellow at DMU and have a housing offering for someone from your class who would like a low stress move to Des Moines.

My wife and I currently rent a large one bedroom apartment at Windsor Terrace apartments (directly across the street from school). My wife and I have maintained this apartment for the last 2 years for when I return to Des Moines for my fellowship rotations. Since we are both from the east coast we would like to find incoming DMU student who would also like to avoid a long distance move and purchase our furnitiure/and furnishings as needed. The furniture we purchased has only seen 8 months of use so far and only 12 months by the time I graduate. Our current rent is only $600.00/ month and the landlord days rents are not expected to be raised, at least this year. We also rent a garage spot for $20-$40 depending on the season which is nice for the snowy months.

The apartment itself is quite big and one of the nicer ones at Windsor Terrace w/ great views of the lower courtyard from all living room windows. The apartment would be generous sized for a single student or a couple.

Please PM me w/ ?'s

FYI-current furnishings include a leather couch, leather chair, dining room table w/ chairs, queen size pillowtop bed which is new, some end tables etc.

If you took this place over you could fly/drive to school with just your clothes and be ready to roll!

Yep Evo - I think that was pretty much a universal sentiment and it was a major bummer when I heard the news. Lousy timing too, right before the holidays.

No clue, but none of the things I've heard thirdhand indicate any sort of wrongdoing on her part. Perhaps someone who is already there can fill us in.

they sent out an email to us on campus and just said that all steps and been taken in accordance with school rules and etc and that she was fired.......don't know why but it's sad because she is so nice and helpful to dmu students.

Hey Everyone-

I am 23yr old, SWF. I graduated from Kansas State University this past August with a B.S. in Human Nutrition and am currently studying abroad in Japan until x-mas and then I'll be going to Spain for the spring. I am from a small town in Kansas. And, I'm enjoying traveling and having no responsibilites this year abroad!! I think it will be hard for me to get used hard-core studying again, but I'm sure my inner nerd will take over again and I'll be forced to succumb to it's every demand...sad.

Looks like the posts on this thread are taking off. That sucks about Becky Grissom, I thought she was a valuble asset of the University. Anyone know any more about that? Too bad, she was alway curteous and helpful with information and such during the application process, unlike some other school's admissions directors.

Changing the subject,
I'm soooo ready to come home from over here with my lovely service in OIF/OED tour. My time is short, so they say, until they decide to extend our tour, which is not unheard of. I'll be so glad to see the snow again! Take care all.

Cool man. Look forward to meeting you. I once was deployed to the middle of the Qatari desert for 45 days. I began craving green things. How goes the short-timer's calendar?

Thanks Evo, likewise. I have spent some time in Qatar too, it's actually pretty sweet over there, but yes, brown and sandy. Short time as in a few months or less.

I'm at Marine camp actually, kind of different, what with all the ridiculous rules and such the Marines follow and feel obligated to enforce, like, "no chewing gum while walking" and others that have no ryme or reason, strange non-sensical rules that they take so seriously and pretty much get most other joint forces (all branches are here to a lesser extent, mostly for specialty jobs, myself included, I'm Army Reserve) pretty irritated. However, I feel pretty confident that these Marines are gaurding us well out on the wire here, standing the bad guys down while I work in the protected confines of the inner camp, they are outstanding at thier jobs. But still they go a bit overboard on rules which does not help morale much while we live in tents out here for a year away from family, friends and careers. I'm not insulting you if you are or were a Marine, just an observation compared to other branches I've worked under at bases and camps. Well Evo, if you do go to DMU afterall, it will be nice to meet you and the rest of the folks here!

....until next post...adios.

???-where do you live know and pay for rent--I can tell you that other aprt. buildings -like 3000 Grand - are much more (I paid $850/month as a 1st and 2nd year-and had to pay more utilities than at Windsor Terrace.)

In some ways you are right-There really are not that many things that are cheaper in Des Moines. Food, gas, entertainment etc. cost about the same as anywhere. Housing (buying/renting) is however cheaper than big cities, but more than small towns, esp. midwest small towns.

OK....a few things...I too was a med tech, a generalist for 2 1/2 years before coming to school here. Second they're talking about moving the white coat ceremony to a little earlier in the year (like closer to orientation)...but you'll find out about that sometime in the spring probably. Third even the more "expensive" places aren't that bad, especially if you plan on getting a two bedroom with a roommate and/or if you have a significant other that will be living with you. It is very affordable compared to a lot of other places. As far as budget is concerned, it is more than enough, you need to learn how to manage your money (especially if you're used to having a FT job), but you can live fairly comfortably and hopefully not rack up TOO much loans (all in perspective). Finally about the weather, it's not that bad, I know it's not REALLY cold yet, but every place has it's downfalls weather wise (or environment wise at least).....and I personally think people here like to exaggerate the weather (sometimes because there's not a lot of other news to talk about).

On the topic of housing costs:

Is West Des Moines, or any of the other suburbs more/less expensive than living in Des Moines itself? I'm looking into buying a house/condo when I move down there, where you do you all suggest I start looking?

Thanks!

J.

Did anyone else who interviewed at DMU got a personalized letter from the Associate Dean, Tom Mueller? I just got a letter several weeks ago just saying the basic "hope you'll attend DMU" but Dr. Mueller had hand written a little note at the bottom. It was such a nice touch, but because I had declined the offer shortly before I recieved the letter, it made me feel even more sad that I won't be attending this school. I had to decline for many reasons (one being that my mom would kill me before letting me go out of state when there is a "perfectly good school" down the block from her house, another being that my boyfriend wants to get into real estate in the Lansing area, the other one being financial considerations...)

Please tell me this is something they do for all applicants, otherwise I'm really going to feel like crap. 🙁

Hi Shelley, yah i got a letter too, and there was a handwritten note at the bottom. It was nice. Have fun at MSU!

The newer apartments are located more in west des moines, ankeny, etc. They may be a little bit more expensive but you get more bang for your buck. I live in sun prairie in west des moines, but I looked at a lot of places, if you have specific questions about places just ask!!!!

25yo male...born in NV, raised in CA, undergrad in HI, currently in MN...moving to IA...I seem to be regressing in my choices of location. Start off in NV...go to CA / HI and now to IA. I should have stopped somewhere in the middle! 😉

I am currently working as a med tech in the transfusion lab at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester! It's good experience, but I'm excited to be going back to school!

I'll be making the small move down to IA with my girlfriend, who will be graduating with a degree in Physical Therapy in October.

The fun stuff:

I love to play the guitar, so if anybody would like to get together and make some noise once school starts, let me know. I play mostlly acoustic music.

I brew my own beer, and love to try different breweries. I have been to the Racoon River Brewery in Des Moines and was pleased! ALthough I couldn't enjoy all their brews (my intervew was the next day) I enjoyed a couple, and am looking forward to the rest!!!

That's about it...I'm excited to be joining all of you in Des Moines, for what I'm sure will be a relaxing, stress-free, laid-back experience for us all! 😉

Hey, dont complain too much. My hubby goes to school at DMU and we have lived in every I state except Idaho...I would have like to live in one of those cool states for a while, but were moving to mich with cremaster, we cant get enough of his buff muscles. Were planning on moving west once were done with all this fun though.

we can debate all day about the best place to live-in the end it probably come down to personal priorities and taste. I have met v. few students happy with 3000 Grand-just look at past postings on other threads-its over priced and the management is only nice until you sign the paperwork. Windsor Terrace-where I live-is cheap for what you get and the management is v. cool-its also v. close-its also a bit older and if you really like brand new places with white carpets its not for you-I prefer hard wood floors and some character. West des moines-great if you like to drive to school and prefer newer apartments. Some people really like it there. I would caution that driving to school for a test in a snowstorm when if your're 15 minutes late you fail is the specific situation I wanted to avoid and live near school. The winters have been v. mild the past 2-3 years - but my first year it snowed big time for like 4-5 tests.

My 2 cents

Thanks cremaster, I'm gonna make a trip down there soon to check some places out, I'll holler if I have questions then.

ypo--I got a letter too, with a nice little note! Have fun at MSU, but don't be a stranger on the forums!

Queen Bee- Not meaning to complain...just making a joke of the stereotypes! Although I wouln't trade the time I had in hawaii for anything, I wouldn't move back! I'm excited to be moving to a new town! It's exciting, and fun to live in different places! G'luck in your ventures with cremaster and his buff muscles! 😉

Macman- Thanks for the info on apartments! I agree in that a choice of location and place is completely individual! I like older stuff too...the house I live in now was built in 1919 and I love its character! Bottom line - I'll be living wherever my girlfriend feels is safe/clean/cheap enough! So really the decision is easy for me! 😉

Ok, so let the freaking out about getting in to medical school end and the freaking out about going to medical school begin. I interviewed on Nov 5th was anybody in that crew? DMU kind of forced my hand making the choice with their Dec. 15th deadline and all, but I liked the school and it will all work out for the best. I grew up out in Cali, but came to IA to go to Grinnell College to go to undergrad. Yeah Liberal Hippies! Anyway, I am in Iowa City now doing cancer research for the year, but looking forward to Des Moines in the summer.
From what I read there are going to be a few of you from the GREAT state of Texas. Saddle up partners because Iowa gets damn cold in the winter. The snow/ice/slush stays around until the end of March beginning of April. But the springs out here are great, the summers are hot and humid but the fall is awesome.
Well, I will close this off by saying I am really looking forward to: meeting you guys and cadaver lab. Sometimes I lie.
😀

DOPEDERSON,
I got into Grinnell for undergrad too, but decided on central in pella. I think you'll love DMU when you get here and get started. And yes from what I remember about first year the cadaver lab is where you make your closest friends

oh and macman does make a great point about driving and the weather, if you aren't used to driving in inches of snow or are concerned about being late for classes etc., the closer the better for you.....if I wake up late it is a lot easier to talk myself into not going to class😉

I agree with Cremaster, if I get up late I don't go to class. Although I've found out there are quite of few classes you don't need to go to, but that's just me. If your a skipper, you'll figure out what classes you need to go to and which ones are much better spent at home in a warm bed.

Skip classes......what are you guys talkin' about? This is med school! Actually I hardly ever go to class, and when I do it is to get the newest computer game from Dmak and lucky for my laptop. Thats just me though, I learn better from books then I ever could from a lecture. When I started here a little over a year ago I was freaked about, but theres no reason to be scared...it's just school, which you are all obviously good at or you wouldn't have gotten this far. Congrats on getting in all of you! 🙂 👍 🙂

Ok medical profession I will jump through your hoops, play your games, fill out your forever long applications, pay you your money and go through at least another 6 years of school. But who will buy the Xmas presents this year? That is what I want to know. Boo $500 seat deposit the same month as Xmas. Boo that. 🙁 😡 👎

Yes med school is like the grinch, except instead of being mildly mean and stealing presents med school will bend you over, then take your money, then bend you over some more off and on for the next 4 years😉

I was wondering if there was anyone that had been accepted to both KCUMB and DMU, and how did you make your decision? I am having a tough time. There are so many great things about both schools. I just want to make the right decision. I feel comfortable at both schools, and I will get a quality education at either one of the schools. I just wondering if anyone out there had any advice. Thanks 😉

Hey DrKT2009....

I was recently in the same boat as you, although not with KCUMB. I was very pleased, and thought I would be happy and successful at both AZCOM, and DMU.

All I can say is that you can read 100 threads about each school, talk to a thousand students, and make 10000 pro/con lists for each school, it's all going to come down to what school gives you a better "gut" feeling! I am a true believer that your gut is very rarely wrong in situations like these! I know it may seem as though your gut is even torn between schools, but listen closely and it will tell you which one it likes! 😉

Just because I'm sure this is why you posted in this thread, here are some reasons why I choose DMU!

- OMM Department - I don't think I'm going to go into a specialty that will use OMM often, but it's always a good thing to learn from the best!

- New Facility
- Friendly environment - faculty and students are both pleasant!
- Technological advances - wireless, note taking system (most schools have this), provided laptop and two pdas (one your first year, one your third).
- Harvey - during the interview we were given a mini-lecture (at least that's what it seemed like to me) on Harvey and some heart sounds, and Harvey AND the lady instructor (sorry, I don't remember her name) seemed great!!
- Ease of years 3 and 4 (setting them up that is!)

And I'm sure there are more reasons, but it's early in the morning and I haven't had my caffeine!

G'luck with your decision!!!! PM me if you have specific questions!

👍

Here is something interesting to share with my future classemates. I'm currently deployed with the military overseas. My military specialty is in Veterinary Medicine where I am an "animal care specialist" which is basically like a PA for vet medicine combined with lab tech skills. I'm responsible for the health care and emergency treatment and management of the MWD (military working dogs) here on our camp.

Anyhow, recently one of the dog handlers called me to examine his dog, because he notice she was limping occassionally on one of his rear legs, also he noticed that during training and playing, she was sometimes doing a "bunny hop" with both back legs together while running. So, I examined the animals for obvious stuff...lacerations, hip joint mobility, fractures, or muscle problems. I could not find anything obvious, so I went and talked to the Veterinarian doc here and we went to examine. He was finding nothing too, until he checked the spine and found a L3 vertebra out of place, shifted to the right, and the animal did express some discomfort when palpated, so it was very tender and likely the cause to the problems presented. The Vet said he often refers this type of thing to a chiro and on some occassions has asked a DO friend of his to do OMT for treatment. So, I went to the TMC and spoke to a DO FP who works there and told him our situation. He took a look and then performed an adjustment. Thought it was cool how the knowledge of OMT and all that surrounds the in depth education of joints, physiology and form follows function, allowed him to apply this to the animal and fix her. It worked for the animal, I felt the change in the spine and noticed her behavior change, lack of limp! Cool huh.

My S/O goes to KCUMB-COM. She wishes she had gone to DMU. She says they go a little overboard with the rules at KCUMB. She not too fond of the person who in charge of proffessional behivior or some thing like that. What really gets her wishing she had gone to DMU is the labs that we have: surgery lab, ENT, Optho, and Neonate labs.

I don't know if this applies to you or not, but I think the biochemistry department is a great reason to come here. Biochemistry is on the top of most pre-meds list of scary courses. The biochem faculty here are amazing and the course organization is a modern marvel. It was one of the best classes I've taken anywhere, ever.
