I like living in West Des Moines as well. I think it's nice to be able to get away from school. If you live too close to school, it's hard to "truly" get away. Some of my classmates really don't like 3000 Grand; too expensive and too close to some of the needy classmates (that probably goes with any complex).


I don't know too much about the public transportation schedule, but everymorning there alot of people waiting at bus stops along Sun Praire Apts. I have no idea if they stop close to school or not.

Yes, actually – we have a new site in production currently. It was well overdue for a new look to match with the look of our other publications. We’re hoping for a live date in the spring of 2005.

While visiting a couple of schools I heard people commenting on the amount of time that they study. I've heard that at some schools that If you study from class to bedtime each weeknight you don't have to study much on the weekends and I've heard of some schools where if you treat studying like a 9-5 job you won't have to study much beyond that (hard to imagine for medical school). For current students - can you tell me generally what your study habits are for year 1 and what your schedule is like? I would imagine it's more of at least 4-5 hours each weeknight plus plenty of time on the weekends. Wondering how much time my signifcant other will see me!!

Trust me on this one, very few people in med school study as much as they thought they would. It all depends on what kind of units you're currently doing. When you have a biochem test an anatomy test and an omm practical in the same week you will be pretty darn busy. Other weeks you will feel like you hardly studied at all. For most people the hardest part is the first half of first semester. It seems like you constantly have tests (you do but you get used to it pretty quick) and youre terrified youre going to fail. But med school (while not being an experience I would care to do all over again) is pretty manageable. I have a wife and we had our first son at the beginning of this year (I am an 07 by the way). Most of my married/parent classmates feel like they are juggling work/family pretty well, myself included. I'm not at the top of the class, but I am floating somewhere in the second quartile. If you're a super gunner this may not apply to you. But I know several gunners with families so that also can be done.

While no one can officially say this, IF you hear about people you interviewed with OR people that interviewed after you getting acceptance emails, but YOU have not received an email....that is foreboding.

Acceptances are sent out via email as soon as they are decided on.

Rejections are sent out by snail mail, and take longer to get to where they are supposed to go.

If this is bad news for you, I'm sorry.

I have to agree with Dartos, I find that I study alot less than I thought I would. There are some weeks that's all you do, but for the most part not that bad.

If you want to get straight A's then you will be pretty busy, but I'm pretty happy with what I get. I personally can't study from morning til night (unless it's a day before a test). I get sidetracked too easily, especially by the 07's SDN chatter. I'm usually just a voyeur and the 08 DMU thread is not as interesting.

Regarding Des Moines; I spent a day last week looking around town with an eye on potentially renting a house/condo/apartment.

Here are my thoughts...

If you imagine the city of Des Moines as the face of a clock with DMU at the center, you should try and live in the pie-shaped sections bounded by 8pm and 10pm. You can choose the eastern sections between 2pm and 4pm if you are willing to live out towards the edge of the clock face in Pleasant Hill/Altoona. The eastern neighborhoods "closer in" along University are the less desirable neighborhoods in Des Moines and you probably don't want to get a place there.

The disadvantage of the distant east side is that it mostly seems to be bedroom communities and there's not much nightlife there (most of that is in West Des Moines, and you'd have to cross the entire city to get to it).

The reason I don't recommend living between the 10pm and 2pm segments and the 4pm and 8pm segments is that getting north and south in Des Moines is a bit of a bother since there are no north/south expressways and you'll be dealing with traffic lights as you come into school. However, if I did have to pick one of these two areas, I'd pick (with all due apologies to you folks in the South of Grand neighborhoods) the north side.

I keep hearing about West Des Moines as the hip spot in town but I unfortunately did not get a chance to check that area out during my brief visit. I've heard that this is where the night clubs are but I'm more interested in knowing if this is where there's more of a community feel, with cafes and shops etc. I just didn't get that feel from anywhere in downtown and this would be the kind of spot my wife and I would be most keen on. Can anyone give a quick description of this part of town?

It does. West Des Moines is expanding quite rapidly. There are a bunch of new coffee shops, smaller shops, and etc. It has more of a suburban family feel, you know lots of houses with fences etc. You can find that in other places as well like waukee and norwalk, which are all within reasonable driving distance to school. Just for a fun fact I would say that there is about 30% less attendance in an average lecture this year for the 07 class. I tend to not get up until 11 now, and I go to school mostly to go to lab, print notepool, or check my mail box. It doesn't work for everybody, but my grades are still fairly high and I am perfectly happy with finally getting enough sleep for once in my life..........

West Des Moines is typical of the upscale suburban clones that you see popping up all over our corporate republic. There are cafes and shops, but many of them are franchise-type places and you're not going to get the "small community feel" that I do further away in a small Iowa town.

People are still friendly - that's an Iowa trademark - but West Des Moines is going to be more typical of what you'd find in a suburb of Minneapolis, Saint Louis, Kansas City, and so on.

It's freaking freezing. It sucks walking to class in sub-zero wind chill (especially when it isn't snowing). At least when we get back we can hide out by the MEC and through snowballs at people as they walk in class!

I hate to admit it, but you almost don't need books for the majority of classes.

I'm on military scholarship, so I buy all of them, and I find I use them after a class is over to read up on and review topics.

My mom and her cousin were talking about a relative that has stomach cancer, and I opened up my notepool and Dr Drevyanko's PPT's to see the slides. I got the refresher I needed without books. Same thing when they talked about Crohn's disease. Notepool to the rescue (much easier than lugging a library...just my laptop).

On the plane back, I hear a lady talk about a rotator cuff tear, and I pulled ou the RIDICULOUSLY SIMPLE book for Anatomy I was lugging through the airport,and looked up the SITS muscles.

I think the books are a wise long term investment, but not necessary for classes on a day to day basis. I tend to use them for high yield pictures mostly....and as references for papers.

FINALLY: The RIDICULOUSLY SIMPLE series of books (they have a full range of topics) are great for a primer on any course, and a great "high points" review. I'm using them as adjunct for board prep right now.

Now I have to go back to my nerdery with my calculator.

I agree with portier..........I rarely buy books unless they are board review books, or a book I think I will use out on rotations or later on in my career. Most classes are well organized first year and have good handouts to follow. 2nd year is a little less organized and a lot of the visiting clinicians don't have handouts, but notepool usually gets the high points. If you feel like you have extra time then you can check out the books from the library and look over them.

Hi Sunstar! Congratulations and welcome! I'm a nontrad. Single mom of three, but one's married and attending college in Florida... so I'm dragging the two others to Iowa with me in June. I plan to move as soon as they are done with their school year here in lovely Puyallup, Washington.

I am. Orientation is going to be the first week of August and I want at least a week in the area before I start, just so I can get settled and have some fun in my new home city 🙂.

I'll buy tha first round cause, everybody remembers who buys the first one. You can always say "I bought the first one" and everybody else says "Yeah, that's right. Let me get this one". You end up only buying about two rounds. 😀
