I just talked to admissions and it didn't sound like they were going to send out a notice about our second seat deposit. If you already put $500 down, another $250 is due March 1st.
Enjoy!! 😀

Yah, I called too. Thankfully I did today, since I didn't realize it was due on the 1st.

Once again i will ask. Munchkins avatar, will you marry me? I will treat you right....

I just wanted to see what most people were doing? I am a little nervous purchasing a house knowing I will potentially only be there for 2 years. Thoughts? Anyone know what the re-sale market in DM is like?
thanks!!

Buying a house can be a little nerve-wrecking at times...but i love the feeling of owning a home. i live up in rochester mn right now, and I own my house. i've only been in the house for about 13 months now, and will be selling this summer. unless i have a completely awful time selling the house, i would say it's been well worth it!!!!! i am looking to buy a condo/townhome when i'm down in DM...easier up keep...and cheaper! ; ) i saw some really nice ones while i was down there a few weeks ago!

Good luck!

I'd say that re-sale on single family homes is better than re-sale on condos. Probably, re-sale in the western suburbs is better than re-sale on the eastern side of town.

Alan Greenspan stated in a speech this week that the Fed is going to be increasing interest rates in the future. So if you're going to buy I'd strongly advise avoiding adjustable rate mortgages. Additionally, there has been at least some speculation that real estate values have inflated so quickly over the past decade or so that a real estate valuation "bubble" has formed. Higher interest rates may bring stagnantion or even a measure of deflation to housing prices depending on how high the rates go.

I've always agreed with Bob Brinker's advice that real estate should be purchased as a durable good with an eye on the enjoyment/utility you get out of it for the price you pay. Good luck!

Any one know where most students spend their MSIII and MSIV years? What percent stay in Des Moines? Do you usually spend the entire year or two years at one location (e.g., hospital) or are several moves necessary for the clerkships/rotations?

From what I've heard, we have room for about half the class to stay in Des Moines. That being said, they are in the process of adding sites, so that could all change.

Thanx a bunch sunstar, I totally forgot about that. I guess the good feeling comes when we'll end up with an additional grand in our pockets once the school starts. 😀

just out of curiosity would anybody be interested in renting a house? My wife and I have a nice 3 bedroom in west des moines. Big yard, basement, 1 full and 2 half baths. Lots of hardwood floors. I'm rotating in MI and we have had our house for 2 years. The longer we keep it the more we make off our investment. We would only like to rent it out to med students b/c we semi know them and they have similar timelines. The house has three good sized bedrooms and a ton of space. There is even two living rooms. Two people could easily live in it and share rent, and three could live there, but it might be hard without having two full bathrooms. Do you guys think anyone would be interested in this or should we just sell it? Let me know what you guys think or if anyone is interested

*Hello all fellow DMU 09ers*

I finally have started to post things on this site and wanted to let everyone know that I have officially joined the class of 09 at DMU and am looking forward to it. I sent my first deposit in yesterday.

I am really into golfing. I am excited because Des Moines is known for having some great golf. I hope to be able to get out on the course at least every once in a while. I have heard about a package that is put together for the medical students that allows them to play at several courses for a very cheap base rate. Has anyone heard more about this?

Thanks and hello to all. 🙂

Nice to have you, we should hit up the courses around Des Moines for sure. You can play while I look for my ball in the woods.

You two can play and I'll wait for you guys in the clubhouse...all it'll take is one hole, and I'll be plenty frustrated enough that a nice pint will be in need! 😉

Don't the teach us how to play golf in med school though? I thought all doctors did was play golf! S*** I'm screwed!

Congrats and welcome Earmuffs! I am a golfer as well and would love to play sometime. I only hit the course a few times last summer so I'm definately rusty!

Is anyone looking for a roomate?

Hey robo77 or anyone else, earmuffs09 and I (beers32) along with one other guy are probably going to split the cost of a mortgage payment on a house. We are looking for another roomate. If there is anyone interested or wants to find out more about what we are going to do, you can send me a message. We are planning on moving in during the summer, either June or July.

Where is the house located? how far from school?

Does anyone else include girls? Or should I say, is this a coed house?

I like golfing but I'm not that great at it. After I got my acceptance letter I went and bought my own set of clubs, since I figured being a doctor meant I'd have to learn someday. haha

I'm guessing we'll being getting our orientation packets in May or June, which would hopefully include financial aide stuff, right? So, do we fill out a FASFA now or wait?

I'm taking a road trip up to Des Moines at the end of April, so if anyone is going to be around let me know. Also, I'll probably be moving up 4th of July weekend, so if anyone wants to get together we should definitely do something! 😀

I'm also looking for a roomate. Are you using the services they provide at DMU where you answer some questions and they match you up with one?
I'm interested in staying across the school to make everything a little bit easier.

Munchkin - I'm planning on moving in July as well!! I'll touch base with you as it gets closer and we should head out for a drink. I talked to the school and they are sending out Financial aid packets mid March. You should go ahead and fill out the FAFSA though.

Have a good weekend everyone!

I am not sure yet where the house is because we have not picked one.We are in the process of searching and putting down offers. We will probably close on a house in April or May and move down in the summer. We are looking at pretty nice houses but we aren't sure of the location yet. We are trying to get as close to the school as we can but still have a decent house. Some of the houses near the school are either run down or really expensive so we will have to do some looking. If you are interested in living with us or meeting us, send me a message and we can figure things out.
I think we all agreed to only having a male roomate, as our significant others wouldn't prefer it the other way.
We haven't filled out anything through DMU yet but we may do that if we can't find someone soon.

For any of you '09ers who are making your way up to Des Moines over the next few months, I'm already up here. Feel free to email me before you get up here and I'll show you around.

Macintosh is for the birds...who wants a computer that doesn't breakdown a lot, and is easy to use....

Howcome you've lived up here long enough to have an address and haven't come out to party with us?

Hey Everyone! I just wanted to say hello because I got my acceptance email today! It was a tough chioce between KCUMB and DMU, but I just felt more at home at DMU even though I'm from Kansas City. Anyway, I'm 22 and will be graduating from Kansas State this May. I am just so excited about coming to DMU and after reading through all of the (many) posts today, I have become even happier and more confident about this choice. Have you all decided where you're going to live? I guess the main chioces if you want to stay next to campus would be either 3000 Grand or Windsor Terrace. Does anyone know when the roommate matching thing comes out? Also on the interview day they said that we'd have to get a private loan because FAFSA won't cover everything, so does anyone know when we should start looking into that? Again, I'm really happy I made this choice and can't wait for August to get here!

cause you scare the crap out the newbie's bernard :scared:
Contact financial aid with your questions they will get back to you, but from what I know if you don't get "military scholarship" and etc you can get your loans through wellsfargo.

Congrats ams8855!!!! 👍 I'll be going up to Des Moines in April to look at apartments, but I'm mainly going to focus in the West Des Moines area.

For the private loan, check out Citibank at www.studentloan.com. They have a great loan setup just for medical students.

PM me if you need any info.

Hey, I was wondering for those from California (want to go back to California) who decided to go to DMU...can you tell me some reasons. I'm in the process of deciding where I really want to go...just scared to make the wrong decision...So, I was hoping to here some reasons why you decided to go to DMU. Thanks!

Thanks for the welcome munchkin! I think I am going to go look at apartments in early april as well so maybe if we go the same weekend we could meet up or something! Do you know Iowa well? Even though I'm from Kansas, I have only been up there one time for a soccer tournament when I was like 12 years old. I heard there is good shopping though, which is a plus...even though I won't have like any money. Thanks for the info about the loan, I'll have to check out everything. I am kind of scared though because I don't have any credit. The only thing I have is a debit card so I don't know how much that will count for. Oh, and I'm Amanda by the way!

I'm from California and am attending DMU next year. I currently live in Rochester, Minnesota however. I too want to end up back in California, but I didn't let that play a part in my choice of schools. I figured I'd pick the best school for me, and worry about long term location more when I pick a residency...not sure if that's the best way...just what works for me! What part of CA are you from? I'm from the bay area...Concord.

CHeers,

J

Congrats AMS8855!!!!!

Welcome to DMU...I think it's going to be a great class!!!!!! I had a chance to go down to Des Moines a few weekends ago to search for a place to live, and much like Munchkin has mentioned, I think I'm gonna be looking in the West Des Moines, Clive area...it was really nice! I'm excited for the move. I'm originally from CA but live in Rochester, MN now, only 3 hours north of Des Moines. I will be making more trips down there as the start of school gets closer for the same reasons as everybody else, a place to live! Hopefully they'll be a weekend where a few of us '09ers are there, and we can all get together!!

Anyways...welcome...time's gonna go by quick!

Cheers

J 👍

Thanks DO! I heard that West DM is a great place to live, but I guess I'm just paranoid that I'm going to oversleep, get stuck in traffic, and miss a test or something. I'm sure I wouldn't, but you never know! Plus, I am a big fan of sleeping in until the very last possible minute, and it'd be nice to grab some lunch at home rather than messing with buying or bringing my lunch. But the area does seem a lot cooler so if you find a set of apartments that look promising be sure to let us know! Thanks for the welcome and I wish the time would go by even quicker. I think I have the biggest case of senioritis imaginable. I can't find the motivation to study for any of my tests except for the night before...oh well. All that will change though next year...fun fun! 🙂 ~Amanda

Congratulations Amanda!! 🙂 I agree our class should be very good this year! I'm originally from Iowa (Cedar Rapids) and know DM quite well. Let me know if you have any questions. I have a lot of friends that live in DM from college and they recommend the apartments around b/w 30th - 40th streets on Grand and Ingersoll. Kind of older apartments with nice character. When are you guys thinking about heading down in April? I was planning on heading down then too. Hopefully we can all meet up!

Thanks for the info about the apartments, I'll have to check those out. I am probably going to go the first weekend in April, so I'm hoping that there'll be plenty of apartments left to sign for. I am still curious about the roommate matching thing...I wonder when that will come out or if it's up now. Maybe I'll call the admissions office. Are most of the bars or clubs in west DM? I live in Aggieville (the bar part of our campus) right now and it's pretty nice just to walk 1/2 a block to get back to our apartment after going out. Although, this is kind of a distraction because I always want to go out and there's a bar in the same parking lot as our apartments and they have Metal Mondays which is always so much fun (not)to listen to. 😉

I think all the "newer" bars/clubs are in the West Des Moines area. I'll be in Des Moines Friday, April 22 - Tuesday, April 26 to look at apartments and party. I've been to Iowa once, and that was for my interview. I'm pretty sure there will be plenty of apartments available. I know I'll be moving 4th of July weekend, but I don't know where yet 😛 haha

Ahh, that's cool. Do you have friends then that already go to the university? I also noticed earlier that you said you had a cat. I really want to get a kitten too before school starts so do you know already which apartments won't allow any animals?? I really wanted to get a cat this year but one of my roommates is allergic. Even though I guess I would consider myself a "dog" person, I still want kitten next year...they're just so cute! I really want to get a pure white male and name him Casper, hehe. Anyway, hope you have fun that weekend...I'm sure my parents will want to go up with me, so I'll have a grand old time. Oh, and I noticed you were talking about the new building in earlier posts and I got to see the inside of it on my interview day. I interviewed two weeks ago on the 18th and it was almost done! They just had to put the furniture in, but the floors were all done and it was all painted and looks beautiful!! The OMM room is amazing! It's on the second floor and has windows that span the entire length of the wall and is just a beautiful room. The gym was also complete; they were letting the gym floor settle or something, but it looks amazing too! You can't beat those flat-screens that are attached to all the cardio equipment! August needs to be here NOW!!! However, this summer will be a nice and much needed break. Do you guys have anything planned yet? I'm not doing anything exciting for the summer but I'm going to Ft. Lauderdale in two weeks for spring break and am so excited!

thanks ams8855 for posting on the status of the new building! that's really exciting!! when I was there last (a month or so ago) the inside still looked like it needed quite a bit of work! maybe next time i go down i'll ask for a tour! YAY!

Hello Class of 2009!
It looks like I will also be joining all of you in Des Moines in August 😀 ! I just got word yesterday and am thrilled. I, like all of you, will be looking for a place to live this spring. Does anyone know of a good website for home rentals? I have a very friendly and furry Golden Retriever that will be joining me in Des Moines and I am looking to rent a house if possible. I am also considering buying...does anyone have any info on the housing market in Des Moines! Any help would be much appreciated! Can't wait to meet you all soon.

I came out to Iowa for undergrad and figured that rather than fight the hords of people back in CA; I would go to school out here and move back to CA afterwards. The winters out here are a bit rough to get used to depending on what part of CA you are from. Other than that I don't mind it out here, except for the food and smoking in doors. The one major positive is that Midwesterners are really nice people in general.

Hope this helps

Hi Jojo! Congratulations! I just got mine tuesday and was extatic! Did you interview on the 18th too? I was the only one from Kansas and my "uniqueness" was the fact that I love to waterskii and started when I was 5. Yes, I know that was very lame, but I couldn't think of anything else because I was too nervous and the brain just wasn't functioning properly! Lol. Sorry, I can't help you out on renting, but in the past posts people have put down real estate links, so you might want to scroll through those. Good luck! ~Amanda 😳)

Hey everyone 🙂

Its been a while since I posted, but I've been lurking of course 😉 I have a question about finding housing. Up here in Canada, most places are posted in the paper the month prior to their availability (sometimes a littler earlier, but this is less common). A lot of you seem to be heading to Des Moines more than a month in advance of when you want to move there - do things work differently down there? Will there be postings in April for places not available until July? I'm looking for a spot for my wife and I and our little one (due June 15th!!) and I really want to find a good spot so that they'll be content during the 1st 2 years. I wish I had gotten a chance to visit West Des Moines to see if that would be the best fit (in terms of more, on-your-doorstep community feel). I'm torn between this area and something closer to the school where it would be easier to sneak home for some time with mom/baby between classes/studying etc. Any thoughts? Any one happen to take some digital photos of West Des Moines that they would be willing to send my way?

Sorry 'bout the long post!! Congrats to the those folk who have recently made the decision to join us at DMU!!!

Cheers,
thatuvicguy

Yikes! Moving is expensive, you guys! I just checked ABF's moving service (which I'm told is a cheaper alternative to renting a moving truck) and they quoted me a little over $2000 to move my 3 bedroom home's worth of stuff! OMG... maybe I should just stuff everything in the garage and make it off limits to the future tenants... then save my $2000 and buy cheapo stuff in IA that I can re-sell at a garage sale once I'm done...

Otherwise, if I think of the $$ I'm spending to move stuff there, then move it back, and who knows how many times in between... all of a sudden my furniture is getting VERY expensive to own...

🙁

The best website I've found for searching for rental homes/apts is www.livingchoices.com and also www.apartments.com. Most of the apartments will know their availability 30-60 days before the end of a lease. When I go up in April, I'm gonna narrow down which apartments I like the best, and put my name on a waiting list. Since I'll be moving the first weekend of July, I should know sometime shortly after my visit where I'll be moving. I looked into different moving companies but what I've decided to do is pack up my apartment into a trailer and pull it with a truck. Of course, my parents are helping me, but it's only costing me $235. I'm selling my used, crappy living room furniture in a garage sale and buying new when I get there.

ams8855 - I don't know anyone up there personally, other than chatting with people through SDN. It'll just be me and my cat, two girls on an adventure. haha I find that having a cat is better than a dog, especially since school will take up a lot of extra time. She's very independent. There aren't many nice, affordable apts that allow pets, but all the ones that do seem to require declawing/pet interview. Miss Chloe is getting declawed next weekend, poor thing. There are about 8 apts in WDM that I'm looking into, so PM me if you want the names. Tell me more about the new gym. Flat screens on the cardio machines? KICK @$$! What types of equipment do they have?

Maybe we should each post our "visit" experience when we get back from DSM. Give advice, get advice sort of thing. My best friend and I are road tripping it up there, and we'll make sure to check out the social scene. 😎

Hey Everybody...here's my $0.02 on the housing situation in the Des Moines area. I took a weekend trip down to DM about a month ago, not really to look at specific places to live (it's a little early yet to do that), but to look at the area around the school and at the suburbs. Here's what I saw while I was there.

It seems as though the entire Des Moines area has concentrated much more on expanding the suburbs...Urbandale, West Des Moines, Clive, than they did keep Des Moines itself nice. The nice houses in Des Moines are really expensive, and the affordable houses in Des Moines aren't very nice! To get affordable and nice, you have to go outside the city, to the suburbs (previously listed). This seemed to be a general theme I noticed, I am sure there are exceptions, so if you are intent on living close to school, I am sure you can find a great place to live!

thatuvicguy--housing down here seems like it might be a little different than what you're used to. I haven't seen really any rhyme or reason about when somebody puts something on the market. I think munchkin is right in saying that most apartments know 30-60 days (I think that's what she said) before the end of a lease. I think the tenant has to give at least a 30 day notice, by law. as far as houses go...i have seen the whole spectrum: houses on the market not available for months, available immediately etc. Typical escrow ranges from 30-90 days. 90 days is the longest i've heard of, although I wouldn't be surprised if there were longer ones available. I am looking at buying a condo and will be seriously looking in april because i can get 90 day escrow, that will put me in june/july time range, and then if you buy, you don't have a first month's payment, it's worked into the closing cost of the house/condo...so I wouldn't have to pay rent until august anyways!

I just realized this is getting really long...when does SDN cut you off?!?! 😉

Please...tell us more about the facilities AMS...they need to put a live web cam up INSIDE the building! The outside shots are getting a little old! 😉

👍

I hear ya' on how expensive moving can be! 🙁 I spent all of my graduation gift money moving to Rochester from Hawaii (where I went to undergrad)...it's an expensive process. Luckily this time I just have a 3 hour drive south...so it should be fairly cheap and easy! YAY! 🙂 Good luck! If there's anything I can do once you get in the Des Moines area, let me know...I have a pickup and am more than willing to help! Just PM me!

I know it's getting pathetic that this is my third post in a row...but i wanted to post this for all of you that may need to take out a private loan. This is from the Access Group. My girlfriend is in physical therapy school and this is the loan that she has...I have compared it with WellsFargo and Bank Of America, and I think it has them beat....here's a link:

http://www.accessgroup.org/loan_terms/2002_03termsLIBOR.htm?termid=201&SchoolId=5001276&Location=http://www2.accessgroup.org/loan_terms/contents.htm&AppReferrer=

For those who aren't going to need a private loan....poo on you!! 😉

J

Thanks for the loan info! I'm not sure if I'm going to do that AF HPSP thing so maybe I'll look into that loan! Is anyone else on or thinking about HPSP and know much about it? I've tried to search the threads and found some info on it, but it was mostly about the army which I heard is a lot different than the AF.

Anyway....more about the facilities. Well, like I said, the floors and walls were all painted, but they did still have yet to finish up the ceilings and finalize the electrical work. One thing I did notice throughout the tour is how roomy and spacious everything looked...even the hallways. The student lounge area looks really nice when you first walk in...that double-sided fireplace w/ the DNA molecule going all the way up is going to be really cool. Next to that is the kitchen area and most of the refrigerators, etc. were all put in, but it sort of looks like any other cafeteria, just a lot bigger. They also said they were going to get a company to host a coffee bar next to it, so that should be really neat. The lecture hall was also complete. It's very long and skinny, but looks nice. I can't remember what color the seats/desks were, but I want to say maybe a greyish color. The OMM room like I said, is awesome. I dont' know if they told you or not, but the tables are going to be hooked up to these motor type devices that will allow you to move them up and down so it's easier to work on your partner. There's also a changing room that looks a litte small, lol, but that's really cool that they have one in the OMM room for us. The library was also done except for the furniture/books, hehe. One thing they said that they are going to do is that they're going to put a lot of the study tables/furniture near the windows instead of the books so that we'll have a more pleasant studying experience. And like I said, the gym is also complete. There's a 1/10 or 1/12 mile track that's above and overlooks the basketball court on the second level. This is also where the cardio/weight equipment is going to be (it's still at their temporary "garage" gym right now). Cardio equipment is going to be on one side and the weights on the other. They have elipticals, treadmills, stair steppers, and other random-type eqipment, but like I said they have 1' x about 1' flat screens attached to them, which is really really nice. The women's locker room is across the basketball court (which is kind of weird because we'll have to cross the gym to get to it?), but that's ok. Umm...that's about all I can think of...I should've taken pics with my digital camera! I wish I could tell you guys more but I was seriously not mentally there that day (I was feeling so sick and at one point during the day when the 4th year OMM fellowship students were giving their demonstration I pretty much passed out, oops!). Hope this helps! And I agree, they should have a camera inside the building! ~Amanda 🙂

Good luck! ~Amanda 😳)

Hi Amanda! Thanks for the congrats! I interviewed on the 17th, so we just missed each other! Thanks for the info on rentals, I am going to check the other posts. You'll have to give me some waterskiing lessons, I am a sad particpant of the sport! Needless to say, I don't look very graceful 😳 ! Can't wait to meet everybody!
🙂 Kris

Does anyone know if we will each be given a locker to store stuff for the gym? I know some schools do have that which is great if you want to leave workout clothes there.
Thanks!

CHeers,

Hey Doitright,
My parents are from the Stockton area, went to undergrad at UCD and now doing my masters at Loma Linda...so i'm from all around!

Right now I'm struggling to decide between TUCOM, KCUMB and DMU??? *sigh* this is so stressful!!
