Hey Doitright,
My parents are from the Stockton area, went to undergrad at UCD and now doing my masters at Loma Linda...so i'm from all around!

Right now I'm struggling to decide between TUCOM, KCUMB and DMU??? *sigh* this is so stressful!!

😕

Hey DocJP...good luck with your decision...just follow that gut feeling! Concord is only about 45 minutes away from UCD! I have a few friends from HS who went to UCD!!! Davis is a fun place! Anyways...good luck...hope to see you in Des Moines!!!

Amanda's description made me about 100% more excited than I was before 😀

Aww, thanks! I just wanted to say that I'm even more excited today too because I got my official paper copy of my acceptance letter!!!!!! Yay!!!!! I called my mom and let her know and she was like "be sure not to spill anything on it or fold/tear it because I will want to frame that!" Lol, oh parents! And in my friendly folder was the reminder to pay $500...I need to get on that! Hope everyone has a great night.

Hey guys...

Total crime index for Des Moines (148) 😱 , for Iowa (58), National Average (100)

True..148 seems much higher than the national average, but its not that bad compared to other areas. I am deciding between DMU and KCUMB, and for the zip code that KCUMB is in, the crime index is 301. Missouri is at 96. Just a few miles away in West Des Moines, the index is at 48 and 27 for their two zip codes. All this is much higher than what I am used to, though. The North Dakota state average is 34.

Hey that's good to know, as long as my car is not stolen when I wake up in the morning and I'm not murdered the same night..i'm fine...yea 148 seems high to me too. Where I live its 90, and its easy to notice the crime once it gets a little dark. But oh well..who care...we're all gona be in the new building 24/7 right??? drinking our coffees while trying to remember the anatomy terminologies half sleep. I think i'm gona vote for west des moines too. 👍

i just looked and where i lived for the past 5 years (before my little stent in rochester) the crime rate is 289, I never had a problem! 😉

Hi guys! I just wanted to let you know that I wrote an email to the student services rep asking about the roommate search program available online. Anyways, she said that it would be up and running hopefully by April 1, but definitely by April 19th! Basically I think you just answer some questions and write a little something about yourself and you can go online and browse through these "classifieds" to find a roommate. Sounds good to me because I don't think I'd want to live all by myself! Spring break in 2 weeks (thank goodness!). Oh, and my DM trip is going to occur sooner than I thought because I'm going to visit over spring break. I'm definitely going to come up once with the parents to show them around campus and look at housing. But I also might come up to go out and party around town with my good friend who is going to the podiatry school there next year. Do you guys know where the students go out because we'd love to meet some people from the school when we're out. Thanks! ~Amanda
PS- RJ, I had to decide b/w KCUMB and DM too, but I decided to go with DM mainly for the area. I think both schools are wonderful, but I just felt more like home in Des Moines. Good luck on your decision!

Well Wellman's is a bar right by school that draws some DMUer's but lately we have been heading to a pretty fun country bar called Miss Kittys. We also go to 3rd base on fridays because its $1 beer night. There is always Drink, Mickey's, and Aura as well, so it just depends on the night, but you can always pm one of us for more details.

Hey y'all-
My fiancee and i are driving down to des moines today to check the town out for a day or two. we're scouting some apts. out near school and out in West dm. I'll report back my findings...sorry no digital camera for this po boy.

Hey Mad Cow---Have fun on your trip down to DM!!! I highly recommend The Rock Bottom Brewery, and the Granite City Brewery for dinner/beer! Both are in the West Des Moines/Clive area...I can't tell where one city stops and the other starts!! 😉

I'd love to get together for a beer sometime. PM me when you get back in town and we'll get something planned!

Cheers

J 👍

Doitright and MadCow - If you don't mind I might meet you for a beer in Rochester! Been meaning to head down from the cities to visit a friend. 🙂 Let me know when you are getting together!

I had a real nice pint (ok, 2) at a brewpub downtown while I was in Des Moines. Wish I could join you folks for a brew - heck I'll have one in spirit up here in Vic...ahhhh (*cracks an ice-cold microbrew IPA*) that's better 🙂

Madcow, I look forward to hearing your impressions of West Des Moines and the general rental situation. I may not be able to head down for a quick visit/apt-find until late May.

Shapin' up to be a a great Class of 2009 👍

Cheers,

Have fun MadCow!

I'm so freakn excited about movin. I booked my moving trailer today and got it at $90 cheaper than the $235 by booking on a Thursday instead of a Friday like originally planned. Just giving you guys a heads up in case y'all need to book a truck/trailer too.

Hey everybody!
Does anyone have any info on average COMLEX scores for DMU? I've briefly passed through other posts and didn't see anything. They told me interview day that average passing rate was about 95%, but I am curious what the average scores are. Any info would be great!
Thanks!

Hey guys/gals from MN. Did you receive that invite to the Spring conference in Owatonna? Are you planning on going? I'm going to try and go at least 1 day.
🙂

Speaking of beer...I am going down to Madison, Wisconsin tonight and am going to have some great beer! I am so excited!

Yes...I got the email about the conference in Owatonna...I was thinking about going...although I haven't seen my work schedule for that weekend yet!

The class of '09 is gonna rock!

J

I just read some more about that spring conference MNDO is having in April, and if you stay in the hotel they have picked, you get a discount rate and it includes tickets to the water park...that would be a lot of fun! PM me if anybody decides to go...I think I'm gonna try to make it!

J 👍

I will most likely be going to the MN conference in April. Does anyone know what time it starts on Friday? It sounds like it should be pretty interesting. Also, did those from MN sign up for the student MN osteopathic membership? I did and I was just wondering what I would ever need it for, besides staying informed on MN events.

I looked in the form and it looks like we need the signature of the president/dean of DMU. I emailed back to see if we need this right now since we haven't started. I'm joining to make contacts in the area b/c ideally I want to do rotations and eventually practice in MN. 🙂 woohoo our first medical conference. How exciting!! 🙂

I'm so excited that I have fellow beer lovers joining me in Des Moines! It sounds like this is going to be a great class! 😀

Great! I live in St. Paul and work downtown Mpls! I've requested the day off!! 🙂

Hey guys, just an FYI. I got word that the deans/presidents signature is not required for the student application to the MN Osteopathic Medical Society. Just go ahead and send in the app without it.
🙂

Hey all! Well your group of DMUers just got bigger by one. I just found out I got in. I was so excited I hand-delivered my deposit check to the admissions office the following morning (I live nearby).

If you have any questions whatsoever about Des Moines, just ask me. I've been living in the DSM area for about 10 years now.

Ciao!

woah..already..hehe....i would do that too, but no truck 🙁 so in that case i guess i'll depend on ABF. I'm not really looking forward to the move out of CA, just thinking of driving 1500 miles to desmoines drives me nuttss..i better have couple full mp3 cds by or i'm gona be reallllllllllllllllllllllllllllly bored.

How-de,
I am back from the long two days of dragging around the city. I think we viewed about 9 or 10 places, mostly in west dm, and drove past others 😱 . We basically cruised up and down grand and ingersoll from downtown out to west west dm. It was tough to get any 'vibe' from west des moines as I didn't find out what was great about west dm. i'm sure it's fun somewhere, but i didn't notice a community or a mingling place of culture, ideas, people, etc out there. I felt it was more of a community of people who live there and work somewhere else. Not much substance on grand ave. anyway. my sincere apologies for my ignorance to anyone who knows better 👍 .
The highway exits are still a mess on 235. Some are opening or closing for random amounts of time, like 31st st heading east on 235, i saw was closed friday night at 11pm with no mention of when it was opening back up. another thing off about this construction snafu is some exits, like 31st, are not clearly labeled. the traffic is friendly and light enough that there is room for error. i was told by several apt. managers that driving down grand was the way to go to school, especially during rush hours.
back to apartments...i found a lot of nice apartment complexes with staff that care about what they provide, and places that lack polish. the rent, which seems amazingly affordable, varied accordingly but all reasonable. like i said, west des moines seemed filled with large apartment compounds or 8 to 10 buildings. the neighborhood is extremely safe and quiet with more amenities than you can shake a stick at(swimming pools, dishwashers, workout facility). if you live out there, prepare to be spoiled.
near campus seems to typify more of the urban dweller atmosphere. everything within walking distance (3 banks by dmu, a walgreens, bars, good eats --i recommend Palmer's on 29th and Ingersoll, and a purportedly kick a$$ grocery store, Dahl's on 30th). The amenities, i can't think of how to spell right now, are not as full-spectrum as out West. 3000 grand seems pretty up there in terms of what they offer, but we didn't look at it, cuz they don't take birds. cats? yes, birds-no. dogs- no. rent is 850 for 2br on 'the lower floors'. caveat emptor: they reportedly have the dmu wireless connection throughout their building, but the guy who is the manager at the Imperial, right across the street from the school said, that they only have about 50% coverage. The imperial has the bare minimum, but VERY WELL maintained and updating is ongoing. rent is very nice as well. and keep quiet about a bird if you have one. The Imperial is very proud to announce that they are FULLY covered by DMUs wireless connection.
There were some places by campus that would be cool to check out including: 3333 grand. my brain is falling like a flan in a cupboard right now, sorry. 😴 have i said anything helpful yet? oh yes, i have heard about boundaries to keep in mind when looking. i am not a licensed real estate agent so i can steer you away from anywhere North of University Avenue in Des Moines proper. we drove around drake, which sits on university, and i'd have to agree that you can do better, closer to DMU.
Finally, some loose endz. While most of the caretakers and managers applauded our anal efforts to seal a deal FOUR (4) months ahead of when we are looking to move in, most really don't have any idea of what they will have then. some places say, we will most definitely have what you are looking for so don't sweat it. so basically, they all say, wait one and .5 months prior to moving in to really nail down some choices. i am looking at my spreadsheet of our data we collected from our meetings and from the apts. websites. i will let you know when i have that updated and then feel free to pm me so's i can send you the list.
To the Minnesooootonns, that meeting out in owatonna sounds nice huh? that'd be a great way to get a bunch of us together prior to our first day of school.
DOit and sunstar, how about getting together next friday the 18th in Rochester?

alright cru, that does it for this landshark. take it easy.

Brian, your post is SO helpful!!!! Are you still in Des Moines? I have a couple of questions for you or any of you who are out there and can help...

1. Has anyone checked out the Sunrise apartments in West Des Moines... they are some of the cheapest I've found on the 'net, but I need to make sure they're in a safe, good spot... I'm bringing two kids with me and I need to rent a 3 bedroom apartment or house... and I have to be mindful of the local schools...

2. Do any of you have a chance to go to the bulletin board and share some of the posts that students might be putting up, renting their homes or condo's? I've asked student services repeatedly to make them available especially to out of state first years... but no response from them.

I'm excited about school but feeling antsy about not having a firm living situation plan! I know it's still early... but I just wish I had this all worked out and could just sit back and relax until moving time...

Oh... those of you asking about rentals... do you know if it's harder to rent... now, when you still have an income but you live out of state... or later, when you live in state but have no job anymore...

Olga

MadCow - Thanks for the apt. info. Did you do your search on the web before going down to decide where to look? Where you looking at 1 or 2 brs? What was the avg. price you found in West DM?

Unfortunately I have plans the 18th and 19th and will be in Iowa for Easter the following weekend. Perhaps the first weekend in April (wow scary it's almost April!)

Thanks!

Hey guys, just to let you know, I talked to a realtor and asked about renting the house and with the price she said we should rent it for we would only make about 100 a month, and if the place needed repairs or anything we would lose money. We decided it wasn't worth the hassle. Sorry to all the people who pm'ed me interested. Good luck finding housing and surviving first year. BTW anywhere in west des moines is safe. The southeast side of des moines is (the complete other side of the city from school is the only place you really might not fell comfortable. This place is frickin mayberry for the most part.

Hey everybody! Since we are on the topic of housing...
I am seriously considering buying when I move to Des Moines. From what I can tell off the web, mortgages are incredibly cheap as compared with rent. I have a dog so that makes things a little more complicatedf for me. I am hoping to head down to Des Moines in the next month or so to look around. If anyone else has pets and are looking for a roommate, let me know. Cats and dogs are both cool with me, although I think my dog might be a bit frightened by cats :scared: PM if you like!
Oh-anyone know any real estate agents???

Aloha Everybody--

I just got back from my little trip to Madison, Wisconsin...and boy was it yummy (beer-wise)!! 😉

It looks as though I'm not going to be able to make it to the MN Conference, I have to work, both Friday and Saturday! Bummer! To those who go...have a good time! Let me know how it was!

Madcow--sorry to bail...but I'm gonna be out of town on the 18th, and the rest of that weekend too! We definitely should try and get together for a beer or two before school starts, it would be stupid not to! 😉 I'm in town every weekend, for the most part, except 18/19/20!

Peace out!

Hi there- I'm currently a 1st year at DMU and will be renting a room in my 2 BR/2.5 BA condo (lease starting in August). Since all you soon-to-be med students seem to be looking for housing I thought I'd throw this up here 😀 The condo is actually a townhome in the gated golf course community of Glen Oaks in West Des Moines. It takes me between 8-15 minutes to get to school depending on traffic and my motivation level.

Here is some info about the condo:
Everything (except the bedroom) is furnished
W/D upstairs
Open kitchen w/breakfast bar
Carpet and tile throughout, oak trim
Gas fireplace
Wireless internet, Cable and all utilities included in the rent
Very nice place!
*This is the link to the country club website if you want to get an idea of the neighborhood www.glenoakscc.com

...And about me:
I'm female, 22 and I spent my undergrad years at the University of Florida. My current roomie is a PA student and she will be going on rotations in August. I am pretty clean and very laid back...and I usually study at DMU, so I'm not home much during the week. Although, I do like to go out and party when we're not swamped :hardy: As long as the dishes don't pile up I can get along with just about anyone!

....About you:
Female
Okay with $600/month rent (that is for everything)

Another big + is that you'll get first dibs on the (somewhat unorganized) pile of old notes in my room 🙂

If you want digital photos, a tour or more info just send me an email. Also, if any of you need advice on housing around school I can hook you up with someone who lives wherever you're looking. DMU is amazingly friendly and you all made a great choice!!!

Welcome to the family!

Well... since Gatorgirl08 sent out a roomate request for a female... I will send one for a male. I guess I just don't want to wait for the DMU service in April. Well... here it is.
4 bedroom house with 2.5 bathrooms
2 car garage with storage
Large family/recreation room in lower level
Living Room upstairs
Full kitchen with dining room attached
Washer and Dryer in basement
Central Air
Nice big deck, overlooking backyard
In West Des Moines. It took me 7 minutes to get to campus, through the construction (the house is in Eastern West Des Moines).
Pets are welcome as long as they are house broken.
There will be a total of 4 guys living in the house. Rent would be between $400 and $450. All utilities included. This is a great deal and location. Let me know if you are interested or need more info.
I am going to be a first year DO student so I can't help you out with notes... but I may whisper the answers to you during the tests!
I have a link I can send you for a virtual tour if you are interested.
Later,
J

I was wondering when most people were planning on moving into their apartments? A student I stayed with said some people get them in June/July to make sure they have one but they lived at 3000 Grand so maybe that's why. Any ideas?
thanks!!
🙂

Actually that neighborhood is FULL of "student housing" options. It's very close to Drake University, I don't know if you are familliar... But, yeah. I wouldn't worry too much about housing since that area is very affordable and always has an opening here or there(student turnover). Beware, that area is very old and I've heard of a lot of the older buildings, however beautiful they may be, being hausnted. Oooooooh!

If anyone needs to know anything about Des Moines, ask me. I've lived here all my life and I can give you a pretty good idea of where the best bars, cheapest housing and nicest neighborhoods are and anything in between.

Hey - has anyone looked for a 1BR apt and found anything at a decent price? Looking on the web I'm not finding a lot around campus for under $700. I know having a roomate is financially much better, but for me (study-wise) I think it'd be best to live alone. Any suggestions? I'm willing to commute from West DM or Urbandale if I can find something more reasonable.
Thanks!!!
🙂 🙂

You raise a good point that many people not familiar with the area may be unaware of. Namely, the ghost problem. Des Moines, while friendly, affordable and relatively crime free, has a warranted reputation as ghost filled. This is actually a misnomer, since most of them are actually specters. Check the realtors website, they are required by a recent state senatorial mandate to provide a realistic assesment of expected haunting problems. We had the ghostbuster out to our house three times in one month before we figured out that we just had a homeless meth addict living in our attic. Boy were we relieved....getting shived I can live with, but ghosts, YIKES!!!

YAY for us! 👍 We've picked the right school and I can't wait until we get to be a great big family! I'm opening this thread so we can get to know each other better and share our thoughts/information on the school and Des Moines. I'm so excited already I want to be there now, but I just sent my deposit today! Wheww, what a relief! 😎

So post away fellow classmates! And everyone feel welcome, even if you haven't made the ulitmate decision yet! 😀
Hi all,

Just accepted to DMU last week, and will look no further for a school. In truth, I fell in love with DMU, and started thinking that if I did'nt get in there, I did'nt want to go anywhere else. Look forward to meeting you guys, and putting faces to these creative names.

Thanks for starting this thread Munchkin.
