If you live next to Western I thinks its worth the free lunch they give you to take a look. Although i think their tuition is going to 40k, plus they are adding dental, vet , and optometry programs which might have some kind of effect on you like raising the tuition even more to help start these programs.

No offense to the Western folks out there but can I get a HELL NO!
Only if I lived right next door to the place and they paid me would I go and interview there. And that would be only for the lunch. I interviewed there (and was accepted) and actually left early to head to the airport, paid extra money to get on a flight that left 1.5 hours earlier! Yes, it was that bad. I really did like the dean though (even though he's running a strip mall). I'm sorry about that last comment people. I’m sure it’s been improved with the new dean running the ship. He was one of the best deans I met on my tour of interviews. Cali boys and girls…don’t flame me either. Ya’ll get so protective about your California schools. Don’t know why. Sorry again Western folks, 1/2 hour sleep last night and some major rapage this morning in Physical Diagnosis makes me want my mommy and pacifier.

Anyway, the purpose of this post was to tell you all how lucky you are. I learned the other day that they have completely gutting out the anatomy labs and are currently re-modeling them. Every station (from what I've heard from faculty) will have it's own laptop with a dissection guide already programmed in the system (no dirty Netters or dissection guide to fumble around with). You will be able to watch the dissection from closed circuit TV, do your dissection, check your email (maybe play me a game of pool on yahoo) and you’re out of there. I also think they are improving the ventilation and lighting as well. So you take that and the fact that you anatomy professors/department kicks ace, and you are good to go! It was ok for us, but ya'll are really getting the hook up. You add that to the new Sim patients they are getting next month (5 or 6 of them) and you are all sitting pretty with the nicest facilities/opportunities around. Damn, I'm jealous. But I am glad I don’t have to do this first year again…(knock on wood). My advice...Get some sleep people!

Alright, off to bed. Yea right...20 lectures of path here I come!!! CHARGE!!!!

that's what impressed me at the interview...+ the new simulator patients 👍

sweet, sounds like a good thing...I was wondering how I would be able to log into SDN while in anatomy lab and this about solves the problem...whats next?...maybe they will have cable TV so I would not miss my daily dose of General Hospital or Passions...

White_n_nerdy, could you please provide me some pros and cons that you used to compare DMU and Touro-Mi?? Thank you very much.

The biggest thing was the cost of living. Rent, rent, rent. I do not think I need to elaborate. Second, even applicants that didn't go to DMU like the faclities. I have heard alot of bad comments about the Touro MI infrastructure. That whole island is a project in progress. DMU has been around for along time, a real long time. That is a good thing. Touro has not. The midwest vs the Bay area. Definetly less stress in the Des Moines area. Also, call the DMU admissions office and than call Touro, there is an attitude difference. Now, that is very unscientific but, try it for yourself. You will have a hard time beating DMU. Now, this is all my opinion.

Gotta love the midwest😉

Does DMU have good scholarships to give to incoming students?

Has anyone been offered a full ride? Or, at least a chunk off of the tuition?

I know of several people on scholarship in my class of 2010. I even know someone who got a healthy scholarship several months after starting school because of his grades.

I was just at DMU on Saturday looking for housing and was wondering what some of you fellow '11'ers have decided on. Houses, townhouses, apts (and if so, which apt)?

i bought a house about 10-15 minutes away

Just to set you DOs straight as we get an extra semester in the anatomy labs....they are more than likely going to have a closed network type setup so that students will not be able to log onto the internet, check email, etc. sorry to disappoint anybody, other than that the anatomy labs should be sweet. The only thing I don't like completely is that one person will be on the computer the whole time, but with that, it also rotates so that everyone in the group actually dissects, instead of having a group leader that won't let you touch the body haha (I was one of them).

I really should be studying physio right now....

You have both forgotten the new chemical being used to take away the smell. This is a huge plus to me as I am sure my anatomy scrubs have unlocked my locker and ran away shortly at the end of the class :scared: . Also, runner is right. If you have heard of the program down in VCOM, it is the same. Now, if they can only make anatomy last a year, I think they would have fixed all the problems with the course.

It was a joke. I'm sure we all understand that. Doesn't mean they can't dream of SDN in anatomy lab.

I was just at DMU on Saturday looking for housing and was wondering what some of you fellow '11'ers have decided on. Houses, townhouses, apts (and if so, which apt)?

I was thinking about 3000 Grand apts because they are so close and seem pretty reasonable. I am currently figuring out what will be open at the end of July.

Has anybody seen a thread about housing and/or roommate possibilities for DMU on SDN? I haven't located one.

There was a thread a while back that may have died. I'll be in DSM the first week of May investigating some housing leads I've tracked down for houses. I'll let everyone know what I find after the wife and I find a place to live.

Congrats on the wedding/honeymoon! I never got a chance to send my best wishes to both of ya!🙂

If you log into DMU portal there is a forum for students to chat, and housing is one of the threads. Ppl there find roommates etc. I visited the 3000 Grand last week and am thinking about it and might need a rooommate too. 3000 is overpriced (mostly due to parking costs) but the convenience, quality, and the driving range make it sweeeeeet

could you please let me know what are the possible site for our third/fourth year rotations? ( ie., state) thank you very much!

also, at Western, they have us do 1 rotation in OMM. Do we have to do that at DMU?

I talked to a 3000 grand rep today and got some info. :

singles cost 760/mon usually and sometimes they run out of these

Doubles cost 880/mon and they almost always have these available

3 parking options
80/mon for garage
50/mon for carport
free back lot parking which fills usually by 9pm

you can only reserve 30 days before moving in.

The double sounds great b/c it is about what I am paying now. Does anybody know how the interior looks? Are the really nice or just average apts?

I was at the 3000 on saturday checkin them out. The interiors are VERY nice...quite spacious and open, and I think are about 1130 sq. feet for a double. Its a very solid building, and due to the steel-concrete construction, you can grill out on your own balconies. Plus like i said before, they have an indoor driving range 😀

Btw, although I'm a guy and don't get too orgasmic over closet space, I have to note that the closet space in the master is unreal

is the 3000 grand is the one across from school and have access to school wireless? if it is, then it's a decent place. I stayed there with my student host during interview. I would like to move there and also looking for a female roomate 🙂

I had called the admissions office a while ago & they say they don't really have a list because it is always changing.

I think she said this was an incomplete list, but it's a start.

Yah or look in that blue portfolio thingy they gave out on interview day - it was in there. It might be the same as what's on line, too - but I'm not sure about that.

I wouldn't get too excited...it's a small room with a net. lol.

Oh so it is also a batting cage, then?! 😆
(Actually I just wanted an excuse to use the little laughy guy - I think he's great!)

Haha, oh, I'm sure everyone here assumed that they actually have a whole driving range field inside the building.:hardy:

I think 3000 Grand as well as many of the other apts within a block should have access to the wireless internet from the campus. I am looking for a roommate as well for 3000 grand but I am a guy. I don't really have a gender preferance for a roommate because I have lived with girls the last couple of years. I am planning on getting on to the DMU portal as soon as I get my login info to look for a roomie.

Did your student host have good things to say about the apts? are there lots of other DO students who live there? Were they well insulated to control sound between the units?

The craziest thing happened at the bar the other night. I ran into a girl who lives in my town and goes to my school in Colorado who will be starting podiatric school at DMU this year. What are the odds of that?

I hope this isn't too personal of a question, but how many of you are planning on borrowing more than the max for stafford loans (8500/32kish)? How about you first years, how much did you borrow for this year, and in hindsight would you have borrowed less or more?

I might not be the perfect example but I borrowed the max and I will borrow that again this year. The main reason being that I fly home every month (around 250 a flight). I know my old roommate has like 8500 left over but he didn't have to buy health insurance, or pay for his phone or his books (all given to him by his parents). I would say take the max. the first year, keep a budget and figure out how much to borrow the second year.

Agreed, take the max unless you are 100% SURE you won't need it. I took the max as well and I am glad I did: you never know what could happen and having a little extra money is a nice safety cushion.

The bad part is you have to pay it back... so not including any undergrad loan debt you bring with you, you're looking at $200,000+ owed to various lenders by the time you graduate. That's scary 🙁

back to path-

When you say take the max, do you mean the max budget, borrowing the left over (budget minus stafford) from private lenders? I read you can do that up till Feburary, so maybe I shouldn't. Those private lender loans are scary, I have citiassist for my undergraduate and they are currently at 8.5% and climbing :scared: . I was just curious how the costs of Des Moines influenced your borrowing habits.

I was wondering about taking the max or not also, as this is all new to me (if you don't count my loans for the Masters prog. I did this year). Anyways, I called the Fin Aid office at DMU & was told we have the option of taking out more loans throughout the year. That being said, I only took out a minimal amount (will only be borrowing thru stafford) for now, and if for some reason I need more, there's always the grad plus, or other private lenders more than ready to have us pile on the debt any time during the year. Hope this kind of helps 🙂

No need to worry about having to get the rest of your money through private lenders.

The Grad Plus loan is fixed at 8.5% (less than that once your incentives kick in with repayment), and it's a federal loan with all of the same perks that come with your Staffords. There is a brief credit check for it, but I believe it's mainly to see that you don't owe the Russian mafia $500 K - In other words, your credit score isn't overly important (like it would be with private lenders).

Good luck.

Thank you, but I guess a more pointed question is how much are you looking at borrowing for the first year? I'm only borrowing min stafford now, and then will borrow grad plus should I need it, but I'm curious if I will need it?

Uhh - they can find that out?!! 😱 There goes my education!

Can't say from experience, but the budget for DMU looks really generous (ex: $14k for 10 months of rent??!!) I wouldn't expect to need more, but everyone's different.

Also remember that there will be a lot of "expenses" your first year - especially 1st semester: PD equipment (~$400+), OMM table (if you choose to get one - $250+?), anatomy lab coat, equipment, lab guides, your 1st white coat, and let's not forget textbooks for classes. It does add up.

By the 2nd semester you'll figure out what you "need to buy" and what you can do without, saving you a bit of bling. For example, I bought just about every text book 1st semester, then I figured out that rarely will something be asked on a test that isn't found in the class notes given to everyone. Plus the library has current texts for check-out. The 2 books I have bought this semester were board review books (BRS and HY) for classes I'm currently taking - overall I'd say I've saved several hundred dollars by being more selective. And my grades have actually improved from last semester.

Just remember to factor in some of the above expenses when determining your budget for next year. You will run out of money if you only calculate for rent, tuition, and groceries. If anyone is curious, I took out the max last year and have about $7,000 left over. So obviously I didn't NEED it all, but it's there if I do. I put a lot of it into a high yield savings account so it will make me some money (5%) while I'm not using it.

One other piece of advice I would give is to stay in touch with your big-sib and ask their advice - what did they buy, what do you REALLY need for ______ class, etc. They usually have a better idea of what you really need and what you can get by without. Plus, they will usually have used books and equipment they are willing to sell you for MUCH cheaper than you can find anywhere else. Just an FYI.

Wow that was long-

Thanks, dj, that was actually pretty insightful. Always good to hear it from someone who's been there

Did you guys get the DMU magazine? Its nice to see all the good things the school is doing in the local area and worldwide.

Hey everyone!! So what pathway of advice are you guys planning on following this summer: a) hitting the MS-0 book list b) killing off your slow brain cells with EtOH c) slipping into a coma and waking up Aug 7th?

All I know is I can't wait til the end of May when I'll be officially unemployed and have absoluted nothing to do...probably for the last time in my life 😱

Can't wait to see you all in August!! Class of 2011 is gonna rock! :horns:

Yeah. I got mine on Sat. It's pretty impressive, isn't it? I also got a nice letter from Jamie Rehmann. I can't believe how wonderful & sincere the DMU community is! Makes me even more anxious to start !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!😀

Options B & C seem like pretty good options at this point. Definitely not option A since I figure I'd try to avoid reading any books associated w/ school (I'm sure we'll get more reading than anyone could ask for & no matter how much you prep, it'll be overwhelming). So my plans will be to try & move to Des Moines in an organized manner, do as little as possible, & enjoy my summer (assuming the cold weather goes away soon)!

Sounds like a solid plan. And lets not talk about the cold weather...I'm trying to block that part out. On my interview day the high was -1...:scared: But I'm def excited to get out of TX before the insufferable Aug heat sets in!! 😀

In case other 2011's were curious...

Hey Soundman or anyone for that matter. 😀 I'm a class of 2011er...just curious of your opinion since you seem to be big into the review books. What review books for 1st year courses have you liked and also went well with the DMU curriculum? Thanks!
Well, I've purchased 3:

First Aid (2007) - almost everyone will tell you this is a must, for board prep and to use/annotate while you're taking classes. Many say that if you know this book inside and out, you will do well on Step I. I'll let you know when I get that far...

BRS Path - buy this book when you start Path. It sums up hundreds of pages of class notes + charts into 10-15 page chapters. It really helped me get the big picture, and had tests at the end of each chapter to help me evaluate my understanding of the material. I used this a lot and I think I did better in the class because of it.

High Yield Neuro - So far this book has been a good buy for me; it has CT/MRIs and several mini brain atlas figures. Again, this is condensed into chapters 10 pgs or less in length. I'm using class notes with this; when I get burned out from notes, I'll switch to HY and just focus on the "important stuff." Supposedly everything you would be tested on (in Neuro) for Step I is in this book (from talking to 3rd + 4th year students). Take that for what it's worth.

Just remember that professors don't test on material from BRS or HY, they test from their notes. So don't make the mistake of just looking at a review book and nothing else. Take the time to at least look through their stuff and make sure you haven't missed some obscure fact they might get you on.

Above all, don't buy anything until you actually start classes! And make sure to talk to your big sib and ask their advice too.

Sorry to hijack your thread. Carry on!

how do you contact ur "big sib" 😀 Does DMU has a big sib program? At some other schools i know, they set up 1st year student with a second year so we could ask for advice.

Also, one more question, what do we do at the White Coat ceremony ( i mean beside wearing your whitecoat ??) and does anyone know when it will be for this coming class? thank yoU!

Yes, at DMU they will set you up with a 2nd year who will get in touch with you some time before orientation week. You will also be sent an e-mail telling you who that person is, in case you don't hear from them 1st.

I'm not sure when the White Coat Ceremony is for your class. For most of the ceremony you sit and listen to speakers (Deans, President, etc.) Then you sign the honor code and take some pics.
