Univ of Virginia, Charlottesville (email only, no ERAS)
Univ TN, Chattanooga (email and ERAS)

Here's what I got so far:
Certified: 10/11/05; Nothing in except board scores, personal statement

Interviews:

Cleveland Clinic

Stats:
Top 15 med school
Step 1/2: 240/261
Grades: Honors in Medicine, CCU; Near-honors in everything else
Research: 2 Publications in good journals, 1st author, 1 conference presentation

I think its true that a lot of places are just basing it on board scores, because I've got nothing else in for them to go on.... unfortunate, since medicine supposedly doesn't emphasize board scores as much

Hi Mossjon, how ya doing?

Interviews at:

UC Irvine
UCSF - fresno
Clevland Clinic OH
Clevland Clinic Fl
Yale Bridgeport
Beaumont Michigan
MSU - East Lansing

Awaiting too numerous to list - applied to 33 programs 🙂 got a little crazy!!!

MSU-CHM 2006

Hello to all,

I too have been one of the infamous "lurkers" and am only too happy to join now.

I usually don't like posting this kind of stuff because I don't want to be "that guy" who likes to see himself on paper. However, I found peoples' stats and where they received interviews very helpful in my decision-making process. So with that caveat, here's me:

Texas allopathic medical school, on the five year plan (see below)
I'm not a stellar medical student, but am a solid high pass kind of guy.
HP on the medicine rotation
Decent Step I/Step II (235/237)
Good letters from 2 IM faculty, 1 Pedi, 1 Chair's letter
Took a year leave of absence to do a M.Sc. in Development Studies between 2nd and 3rd year
A few publications, a few more that were "submitted" but not "accepted" (quotes for emphasis)

I will be couples matching with mah wahf (x1 month), who is also applying IM from the same school. We applied to 25 programs from coast to coast out of abject fear of not having options. Interviews received thus far include:

UTMB - Galveston
University of Illinois - Chicago
Cleveland Clinic (Cleveland)
University of New Mexico
Emory
Cincinatti
Pittsburgh

We submitted all the shtuff around the 21st of September (a bit late 2/2 honeymoon) sans letters. At this juncture, my CAF, Personal Statement, academic transcript, USMLEs, photo, and two letters are uploaded.

Hope this helps! Looking forward to seeing y'all on el trail and on los posts!

I am starting a new thread where people can post the programs that have already started rejections. I figure some people might be hesitant, but I think it might be helpful to know. Especially, if you've heard nothing from a place that is offering interviews.

My interview list is abismle, maybe its because i eat pandas.

since i have been looking at this thread almost every day, i feel obligated to speak for those of us that have been reading and not posting. . . for good reason-

number of programs applied to: 12. number of interviews: 0.

Had my UW interview today (I'm doing a visiting rotation here). Thought I was just stopping by for an informal chat with the associate program director, and found out upon arrival that it was in fact my official interview. Talk about being caught off guard! Fortunately the interview was laid-back and I think it went as well as could be expected, considering it was my first and I hadn't really prepared.

Found out some info that might be helpful for other applicants: First, even though I didn't receive an "official" interview invitation, she mentioned that my application met the standards they use for offering interviews. I listed my stats earlier on this thread so that might provide a useful reference. Also, she said they were just beginning to gear up for reviewing apps and offering interviews - sounded like they haven't offered any yet (aside from those for visiting students). Finally, we talked at some length about the ACGME probation issue and what they are doing to rectify the situation. I would be happy to pass that info on if people are interested, so feel free to PM me.

Updated list:

UTSW (9/26)
Colorado (9/30)
Baylor College of Medicine (10/6)
Providence St. Vincent, OR (10/7)
Duke (10/10)
University of Washington (10/13, sort of)

Uhhh, BigBadBix, was the reference to UW interviewing applicants with your stats supposed to encourage us? 😉 😉

how come no one is posting interview updates anymore? are the rejections coming now? just curious?!

I havn't gotten an invitation to interview in about a week. I am waiting to hear from about 25 programs. I think that they are waiting for my other 2 letters and transcipts to get upladed to complete my application, plus a large proportion of places I applied don't start reviewing apps untill completed/deans letters go out. I am a bit disheartened to hear that UCSF, Cornell, U of M have sent out interviews and I havn't gotten one. If anyone has gotten interviews at these programs is your application complete?

I have received a few interviews since my application became complete on the 11th (complete except for dean's letter).

UTSW
UT-Houston (which I think just started inviting)
Pitt

No official rejections yet, but I have yet to hear from Duke, Michigan, UCSF, Case Western, which have all started inviting.

University of Vermont invite received today.

I also have received no rejections, but have not heard from Colorado, Dartmouth, Wisconsin, Michigan, and Wash U which have all been mentioned in this thread as offering interviews.

Here's my updated interview list:

Drexel
Temple
Baylor College of Medicine
University of California-Irvine
Medical University of South Carolina
Cleveland Clinic

Like many others on the forums, I am also still waiting to hear from many more prestigious programs, some of which have already begun sending invites. No worries though--should this pattern continue, I will be forced to lead everyone else who might be dissatisfied with their interview list on a round of late night streaking (most likely through the quad, and into the gymnasium). You can even bring your green hat.

I think that is somewhat true, but I think there is some subjectivity to the process. I did relatively poorly on step I and decently well on step II and still managed to get an interview at UTSW (shocked me a bit to tell the truth). I think my medicine "chair"/department letter made a difference since I got many a couple of days after it was released. I also had some extracurricular stuff that was interesting. But as far as my grades and scores, they are very mediocre.

I totally agree w/ ucla....I think that programs, even in IM, DO look for Board scores...true, it might not be the ONLY thing, but I still think it's 75% of the application "package." Don't mean to brag, but yes, I have a smokin' 👍 👍 application...BUT HORRENDOUS (you have NO idea how horrendous, BUT passed all on 1st try as a US student) Board scores...what can I say, can't take a test!! 😡 😡

In any case, I KNOW it's still early in the game, but look around to all the people who have a laudry list of invites....they ALL have a common thread...they have VERY good board scores...to these folks, CONGRATS on your excellent scores and I truly mean that.

And if you think about it, I can't really "fault" places for "judging" on board scores only...imagine if YOU are the PD @ a place and recieve like a thousand applications (talked to the person @ LIJ, and she said that she recieved this year close to 1700...that's right....1700 applications), then how would YOU go through them. It's practically IMPOSSIBLE for you to go through them 1 by 1, right? It's just the nature of the beast....

Don't mean to sound "grumpy"  , but just tellin' it like it (presumably?) is....dunno....maybe this freakin' weather is making me pessimistic (Jersey)....

However, to those who say that it isn't based on board scores, I RELLY REALLY hope you guys are right!!!!!

Our program director (and some IM folks who spoke to us at the end of third year) said that they rarely look at board scores. They said that the following were most important:

1. Most important are clinical rotations, specifically 3rd and 4th year medicine
2. LoRs
3. Extras - research/pubs, things that show you'll make a mark
4. AOA (was either 3rd or 4th can't remember)
5. School
6. Boards
7. Preclinical rotations

Not really sure if they were speaking about all comers or just how we do overall. I do know more than a few students who got into top programs with less than stellar (or even average) board scores who came out of ucsf. Ultimately, I think the importance of board scores vary depending on which medical school you go to. Whether that is right or wrong is not for me to say for my experience has only been at one school. Program directors talk a lot, and many of them have in their heads an idea about which medical schools consistently produce strong residents.

Basically, I think that if you are coming out of a top school whose internal medicine program is very strong, then board scores don't matter all that much. If you are coming out of a 'less-pretigious ( I don't like these terms) then perhaps board scores will matter more.

Someone before said that people who go to 'top programs' will always think that the school name does matter, and those that don't attend 'top programs' will think that school name doesn't matter. I think that, for IM, a similar phenomenon happens with board scores. Our experiences differ.

I've heard and read that for IM specifically, they put more importance on your Step2 score compared to Step1. not sure if that is true...

i have the following interviews:

Temple
Georgetown
George Washington
Emory
Michigan
Loyola
Tufts
Mayo (Rochester, MN)
Rush
Case Western

still waiting to hear from: Northwestern, U-Chicago, U-Penn, UCLA, UCSF, Stanford, NYU, Cornell, Columbia, Mt. Sinai, MGH, Brigham, BIDMC, and Wash Univ (St. Louis).

no rejections so far (holding my breath)

my application is complete except for 1 LOR, but unfortunately it's my chair letter so i think that might be holding me up quite a bit.... plus, my step2 score hasn't been reported yet. and i don't go to a big-name medical school. so some of those powerhouse places will probably not be contacting me .... oh well.

Hi, I'm new to this forum. I'll be applying next year, and I'm primarily interested in West Coast and possibly some East Coast programs. What are some top programs in these locations that I should shoot for and some good quality programs that may not be "tops" but still generate a good number of academic physicians? (I'm sure there are great programs between the coasts...but living along the west coast...possibly the northeast...is a lifestyle thing I can't ignore.) I apologize if this isn't the right venue for this message/question.

Updated list..

Old: Carolinas, MCV-VCU, Winthrop, Maimonides, UConn, Wake Forest, UCSF-Fresno, St Luke's (NYC), Christina Care, Kaiser Oakland

New: Alameda, NY-Methodist

Just got Step II scores today (USMLE since COMLEX is NEVER coming...)

For those of you that are thinking board scores are the most important:
USMLE Step I: 208
USMLE Step II: 230 (just released tonight)

COMLEX Step I: 90%
COMLEX Step II: ??? took in August, still waiting for any scores
COMLEX PE: in November

🙂 Have a great weekend everyone! Hopefully more will come on Monday!

I think the above is a fairly standard view, though other places may put AOA and boards over extras.

Once you get an interview at UCSF, how important do you think they weigh the interview itself as compared to the above criteria? How much do you think they might look at performance at a visiting clerkship (consult service at SFGH)? I know you its hard to predict this kind of stuff, but just humor me and speculate for fun.

One more q...how many UCSF medstudents usually match at UCSF IM each year?...do most want to stay? If so, do you need to do very well in medical school to match there? (Most places seem to welcome their own with open doors, but most don't have such a top notch IM program either)

I really have no idea how much the interview itself matters. I think a strong performance in a consult elective hear (with perhaps the attending you work with willing to say 'thumbs up' to the IM program) can help.

Usually, most UCSF students going into IM want to stay in California. The majority of those want to stay in the Bay Area, ideally UCSF. We usually have anywhere from 20-30 IM applicants per year, and I would say that at least half want to stay. UCSF usually takes anywhere from 4-8 categorical UCSF students and then an additional bunch into its primary care program. Graduating from here and wanting to stay and do a categorical residency is a little more competitive. For those that want to stay and do primary care, the chances are much better. In order to stay for a categorical spot, you need to have performed really well on your medicine clerkship and sub-internship and have some kick ass letters that reflect that as well. I'm not sure of the total number of my classmates applying in IM, but I think it is between 20-25. There are many that want to stay. There are others who definitely want to check some other places out. In looking at the residents, we do have a decent amount of our own, but we have plenty from other programs.

what does AOA stand for...see this all the time and I have no f'n clue.....

AOA = Alpha Omega Alpha
A medical honor society for the top 17% or so of the medical school class. May be helpful for the top IM programs and very selective specialties (ie derm).

Just got my 3rd LOR in Thursday

UTSW 10/11
Emory 10/7
MUSC 10/12

Thanks!!! Can't believe that being part of the "AOA" is more impt than board scores lol. Not a big fan of these societies....

i have 4 letters in, usmle i and iick, but my transcript hasnt been sent yet (is that normal?) and obviously deans letter too
