Thought I was just stopping by for an informal chat with the associate program director, and found out upon arrival that it was in fact my official interview. Talk about being caught off guard! Fortunately the interview was laid-back and I think it went as well as could be expected, considering it was my first and I hadn't really prepared.
Found out some info that might be helpful for other applicants: First, even though I didn't receive an "official" interview invitation, she mentioned that my application met the standards they use for offering interviews. I listed my stats earlier on this thread so that might provide a useful reference. Also, she said they were just beginning to gear up for reviewing apps and offering interviews - sounded like they haven't offered any yet (aside from those for visiting students). Finally, we talked at some length about the ACGME probation issue and what they are doing to rectify the situation. I would be happy to pass that info on if people are interested, so feel free to PM me.
Updated list:
UTSW (9/26)
Colorado (9/30)
Baylor College of Medicine (10/6)
Providence St. Vincent, OR (10/7)
Duke (10/10)
University of Washington (10/13, sort of)

UC Irvine (10/5)
Cleveland Clinic-Florida (10/5)
UT Southwestern (10/7)
Loyola (10/11)
ucladukes said:I think that is somewhat true, but I think there is some subjectivity to the process. I did relatively poorly on step I and decently well on step II and still managed to get an interview at UTSW (shocked me a bit to tell the truth). I think my medicine "chair"/department letter made a difference since I got many a couple of days after it was released. I also had some extracurricular stuff that was interesting. But as far as my grades and scores, they are very mediocre.

1. Most important are clinical rotations, specifically 3rd and 4th year medicine
2. LoRs
3. Extras - research/pubs, things that show you'll make a mark
4. AOA (was either 3rd or 4th can't remember)
5. School
6. Boards
7. Preclinical rotations
Not really sure if they were speaking about all comers or just how we do overall. I do know more than a few students who got into top programs with less than stellar (or even average) board scores who came out of ucsf. Ultimately, I think the importance of board scores vary depending on which medical school you go to. Whether that is right or wrong is not for me to say for my experience has only been at one school. Program directors talk a lot, and many of them have in their heads an idea about which medical schools consistently produce strong residents.
Basically, I think that if you are coming out of a top school whose internal medicine program is very strong, then board scores don't matter all that much. If you are coming out of a 'less-pretigious ( I don't like these terms) then perhaps board scores will matter more.
Someone before said that people who go to 'top programs' will always think that the school name does matter, and those that don't attend 'top programs' will think that school name doesn't matter. I think that, for IM, a similar phenomenon happens with board scores. Our experiences differ.

How much do you think they might look at performance at a visiting clerkship (consult service at SFGH)? I know you its hard to predict this kind of stuff, but just humor me and speculate for fun.
One more q...how many UCSF medstudents usually match at UCSF IM each year?...do most want to stay? If so, do you need to do very well in medical school to match there? (Most places seem to welcome their own with open doors, but most don't have such a top notch IM program either)

A medical honor society for the top 17% or so of the medical school class. May be helpful for the top IM programs and very selective specialties (ie derm).
