OFFICIAL Interview Invite Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
For those of you who have called to ask about your status, how are you phrasing your question? I'd like to call a couple of schools, but I'm nervous that I'll get flustered and come off like an idiot.

"Hi I've applied to your Clinical Ph.D program for September. I'm just wondering if all interview invitations have been sent out yet?"
- I didn't give my name because I don't want them to know that I'm an anal anxious freak at the moment!

Update:

Windsor - Just started reviewing applications today! Still have a while to hear

South Dakota - Hope to be sending out invites by the end of this week or early next week.

Guelph - Late in invitation process. Interviews are this Friday and next week, but the grad secretary says invites may still be occuring.

Central Michigan - the phone kept going dead. weird

These were the only ones I had any luck with.

Still yet, no response from anyone. No interviews, no rejections (though think I've missed out on at least 2 of 9).

(Lauren, I'll reply to your PM a little later today 🙂 )

Has anyone had any experience with group interviews? I have one coming up for NYU and I have no idea what to expect. Any insight would be much appreciated!🙂

Good Luck with NYU. I had a group interview last year at Adelphi for their Ph.D program and it was quite an experience. From what I remember they had grouped applicants in four different section (not sure if it was random or not) and each group had a graduate student and a professor who sat in.

Basically, the directions that were given to my group sounded something like this "Feel free to talk about whatever you want. For the next couple of hours we are just going to talk" So, we looked at each other and asked the professor questions like "Should we talk about our qualifications, or research experience..." and his response was "Do you think that is what you should talk about, what do you want to talk about"

And the Professor sat and observed for awhile, probably noting who was the initiator, who participated a lot, who didn't speak much but when they did make really good points....Then the professor went on to ask questions relating to whatever the topic was at that time and I remember we were talking about females in graduate school and juggling motherhood and a career. We managed to relate our credentials and experiences to whatever it was we were talking about. There was also an activity where we had to introduce the person sitting besides us.

The interview wasn't bad at all just different from my experiences. A nice change from the typical professor/student one on one. 🙂

Also, I just talked with someone at BC, and they will be calling people over the next two weeks. Interviews will be on the 26th and 28th.

psyched4life- Yuck. It seems like they should be able to get that information about you in a less contrived setting. I really don't think it would be an acurate repersentation of my interaction style. I hope my group interviews (didn't apply to Adelphi) don't take that format. I mean I'm fine with a little warm up chit chat but 2 hours of unguided talk while being evaluated!?

Oh and on BU- for those of you who got an invite...the official details/info email will be going out today or tomorrow. So there's no need to check on the hold up. Wish they would get that out though so that I can make my plane reservations...grr. I emailed the clinical office manager & she didn't respond so I called to check...they prob think I'm crazy annoying by now- Oops 😳 .

Thanks, Psyched4Life!!! Very helpful. That puts my mind at ease.

Hi contact me offline and I can tell you all about NYU's counseling interview & the dept.

I'm sure each school has their own method to interviewing. I was just relaying my experiences at Adelphi. Obviously you shouldn't expect the same thing from a different program, but at least you have an idea of what it was like at Adelphi. I would think for other programs they would be more structured and guided....but that was the only group interview I had.

Best of Luck!!

I'm doing a little investigating, I hope to have answers to whether all interviews were extended yet for U Denver and NW-Feinberg and Temple (developmental). I'll edit as I get info.

UDenver Child Clinical Psych - Interviews invites go out this week (per graduate secretary) for the weekend after President's Day Weekend (per website)

Hi all,

This site is fantastic! I'm sorry it took me so long to find it.
I do know that NOVA sent out interview invites by email 1/29 and are having interview day on March 9th. Hope this helps!

Is that Nova PhD or PsyD?

Sorry about that. I am referring to Nova Ph.D.

Was this for the Ph.D. or the Psy.D.? Thanks!

Sorry. You all responded before I had even typed my message!!!

I talked to GSU today, and the administrative assistant I spoke with from the psy dept said that they are still extending invites until the end of this week. There are still some applications that they are in the process of reviewing.

Also, I got an email from VA Tech that said that they will be giving invites for the next couple of weeks. If you don't get an invite by then, then "you shouldn't be optimistic about getting in."

Hope this helps and good luck to those still holding out for these schools.

I have applied to several schools and I have received interviews from two:

University of Maine - Orono
Suffolk University - Boston

From what I see, I have been passed over for interviews at SUNY Buffalo and BU at least.

I also heard from a friend that UC Berkeley is still reviewing applications and I heard myself from UVM that they will be calling tomorrow night (1/31) to invite applicants for interviews.

Guarinis-
Welcome to the board, and welcome also to the Suffolk invitees! See you in March, I suppose (we'll keep you posted if we design a secret handshake!😀 ).

I just spoke to the graduate secretary at NU-Feinberg. She said they are still developing their "core list" and will be making phone calls all week. She also said that even if you do not receive a call this week you might be on a standby list, so if someone turns down an interview a person from the standby list would be called. So, I guess there is still hope for us who have not heard.

Also, I did not see it on the list. Washington State University interviews are on February 16th.

Which program at Boston College? I applied to the Counseling PhD program in the Lynch School of Education at BC, and I've been curious about when to expect a response.

I called clinical today and the secretary told me that (1) all clinical interviewees HAVE been notified, and (2) alternates will be notified if they've received an interview by the end of the week.

If there are applications still being reviewed, it is not for clinical.

Sorry, I don't mean to pry, but did you get an interview from WSU or did you call the department to find out about that date? I'm from Washington (but attend undergrad pretty far away) and was hoping I might have a chance to go to grad school closer to home!

Thanks!

Yes, child clinical. And the correction to my correction is that I think she actually said March 5th for the interview, not the 4th. Sorry.
Can you tell I'm kinda frazzled????

This was for Child Clinical correct? Thanks.

I have an interview there. I do not know if they are still contacting people. I found out a few weeks ago. But a professor contacted me and there was no form email sent out. I have been through this process several times now, hopefully this will be my last one, but I recommend calling or emailing the graduate secretary to find out.

Hi All,

How are you guys preparing for your interviews? For instance, how many articles of your professor of interest's should you have read in preparation? Would you say three or so is enough?

Thanks!!

I just received a voicemail from my professor of interest inviting me to the interview for University of Denver's clinical child psychology PhD program. When I talk to the people there tomorrow I will ask when they plan to finish extending interviews and how many people they are inviting and post it here.

Thanks for the heads up; I will definitely call them. Is this a clinical interview? I read on the clinical program's page that they were going to be making invitations to certain applicants "in early February."

In addition to contacting GSU, I also talked to BU today and they assured me that not all clinical interviewees have been notified, but that phone calls and official notice would be made "by Friday." Who knows? There's still hope.

Hermionephd- Its possible...still haven't gotten that email. Their interview pools appear to be relativly large & not as many people seem to have posted as having interviews with BU (relative to last year). Good luck!

Is there a list or do you all post single messages?

Got an invite from
Alliant University, Los Angeles, Clinical PhD (interview 01-31)

Thanks. I guess I was a little sleepy, lol

Yes, it is for the clinical program. Like I said before, I received an email directly from the professor. She might have just been ahead of schedule compared to other professors. So don't give up hope yet. Good luck!

Yup, that's the one! I hear that they also have group interviews.

Has anybody heard anything from UMass Boston yet? I know they are supposed to be extending invites soon....

I did some mock interviewing with a psychologist here where I work. She grilled me pretty good and also helped me formulate better answers. It really really really helped! Personally, I would not attempt an interview w/o a little prep first. But it also helped that my first phone interview was with my #1 pick so now I'm a bit more calm (or so I like to pretend!)

I heard UVM would be calling/emailing tomorrow 2/1 either from Dr. Forehand or Holly the secretary. Someone heard they are CALLING TONIGHT?!?!?!

whoa.:luck:

Can you give me the full version of LUC and UIUC...I think I know what you mean but I do not want to make a mistake on the list.

Also, if anyone has questions on ND, PM me. I am still here for undergrad and I have a good relationship with the department secretary and can ask tomorrow when I go over to do research.

Just to confirm what hermionephd said, I wanted to post that I called BU as well. They won't tell you that you're rejected, because there a still a few faculty who have not made their calls. But we should know by the end of the week if we got an interview. AH, the agony.

Loyola University Chicago and University of Illinois-Urbana Champaign. For those of you who asked, I got a call from UMassB yesterday, so don't give up, there's still time.

There are faculty who haven't called yet? That does give me a little smidge of hope! Come on, Boston schools...
