Official "Interviews Offered" Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I applied to way way too many.. due to a personal situation. I am not sure where I will HAVE to end up so I ended up applying to ~ 100. I should have a real solid idea as to where I need to be by the end of Nov. I am trying to schedule my interviews accordingly. I actually am a decent candidate but the personal life is making my life difficult. I dont want to bore anyone else with the details..Good luck people and I PROMISE I will be dropping them as soon as I can! I dont have the $$$ or the desire to interview at all these places. 🙂

EctopicFetus and CS_22, I'm curious to know how many programs you applied to...

About 60 for reasons mentioned before... Hope that helps!

Radiohead - I feel the same way about maryland.

🙁 I feel the same way about Wash U (short list), MCG and MD.. of course i spent enough money to feel this way.. 🙁

I was hoping that I would get my offers before the Dean's letter went out, because now all the programs are going to find out how I punched out 3 attendings and dated one of my inpatient psych patients. Well, at least I have 9 so far. Seriously, how many otherwise qualified applicants have something on their Dean's letter that disqualify them from receiving an interview?

And BTW, what do ya'll have to say about Hopkins vs. U of MD? I haven't scheduled Maryland yet becasue I hope to go to Hopkins around the same time.

It's kind of funny how you feel that way about programs you didn't get an offer from. Like I'd kill to have heard from UVa, Orlando, USF or Wake, but other equally programs like me enough to offer interviews. Everybody has a different opinion I guess.

More are coming.. Nov 1 after the deans letter is when the windfall will begin.

I just had a chat with the PD at UT-Houston, and he says they are waiting for dean's letters before issuing any invites (except for those who rotate here).

Good luck!

Dr. Andy, there are so many variables in getting interviews. Maybe you applied to a lot of competitive programs (I didn't apply to Cinci, Denver or any of the other top places I was advised would be a waste of money for me) , or a lot of programs that aren't handing out invites yet. The people with a lot of interviews so far applied to A LOT of programs, and maybe you applied to less programs. And completeness of your application is important too, depending on the program.

Dude, relax. I applied to a tremendous ass load of programs...and most of them aren't even competitive. Although I am grateful for all the interview offers, i wasted a lot of money cuz im gonna cancel a lot... Like most peeps said, Once the Dean's letter's you should be getting interviews left and right.

Ectopic: "I think this interviewing this will be a real challenge. I hope it doesnt get to old too fast. Undoubtedly I am glad I left the months of Dec and Jan open to maximize opportunity. Later in the yr I am looking forward to some much needed vacation."

Some of you might not get where this comes from..check out scout.com and click on any of the players.. Ridiculous what they do with these HSers. 👎

so i don't understand one thing....if interviews are GENERALLY not supposed to go out until 11/1....how come some people have like 20 or so....this is NOT meant to be a jealous statement or anything like that...more CURIOSITY than ANYTHING ELSE!!

Thanks...

Interviews: ZERO!!!!!!!! 🙁 🙁 🙁 🙁 🙁

medlaw - just by looking at the interviews listed, it seems to be a little bit regional. By and large some northeast schools offering early and then a bit later a handful of southern programs. I think it just depends on the program. TMO

Ectopic- should we assume - 20% that bench press and squat like we do on Scout ?

The numbers from scout usually come from Combines.. But since mine is self reported.. but if i wanted to exaggerate I could say bench 350 squat 600.. Reality weight 355, bench 65 pounds, 40-time 6.4 :meanie:

I guess if you are offering an interview then ill stick to it! 😉

On another note why some people might not have interview offers yet keep in mind I applied to a ton of programs and if your transcript or LORs arent in then they prob havent offered interviews due to that. Also, it seems like many of what are considered to be the top programs havent offered yet, like Denver, Cincy etc.

Interviews: ZERO!!!!!!!! 🙁 🙁 🙁 🙁 🙁

I talked with a program coordinator yesterday who told me that they started offering interviews because they heard other programs were doing so. Everyone seems to be worried that they might lose out on some of the applicants who limit themselves to certain number of interviews. So my bet is that we have perpetuated the cycle by growing this thread!! Earlier invites make more sense anyway because no one really cares about the Dean's Letter anyway. How many top students have poor Dean's Letters? And even if they did, if I were a PD I would still interview a top candidate and determine for myself whether the Dean perhaps just didn't like the student. But my personal experience is that even when the Dean does not like you 🙂 that you will still get a glowing Dean's Letter if you have earned it academically!!

Lastly, did anyone see the game last night? I was right there in person watching the celebration. Congrats Chicago...from a Houstonian!

Cincinatti Today.

This is my only 4 year program of interest and I must say that it seems to seriously be an incredible program. I am a DO student so I really feel honored to have been invited by them, and my guess is that they don't invite simply to be courteous. I am not completely sold on the 3 versus 4 year programs but I am definitely going to interview here just to see if I get the same feel in person as I do on their website. Anyone have any comments about this program first hand? The residents all seem to be "Rhode's Scholar" material!

Cincinnati is a solid program. Who can argue with its reputation? The only reason I didn't rank it #1 was due to lack of international experiences (more specifically, funding for it), not enough months of critical care time, and virtually no ultrasound training there. There wasn't an active ultrasound program. They are now recruiting for an ultrasound director (for both residency and a future fellowship). Other than that, they have ample research, great reputation, excellent teaching, excellent residents, air medical program, good EMS and tactical medicine programs, etc. You'll have to see if Cinci is the program for you. You'll get a feel when you interview.

I've been pro-4-year residencies since medical school. I think the additional year offers a lot of opportunities not available to 3-year programs. Mainly in the form of electives, but 4-year programs also usually have more critical care time and ED time (we spend 6 months in the CCU, MICU, SICU, and PICU; and also have 6 months of electives).

Don't discredit 4-year programs so quickly.

LSU-Shreveport was not affected by Katrina. As far as LSU/Charity in New Orleans, I have heard they will still recruit a class next year.

However, please let's not hijack this thread by talking about the future of New Orleans and the Charity program. Such a discussion belongs on a new thread.

Lets leave this thread clear of such peripheral discussions so we can focus on interviews being offered by specific programs.

Thanks and good luck everyone!

Cincy now has a solid ultrasound program and a formal US rotation in the first year. I'm almost sure ultrasound is now required by RRC so more and more programs are making room for it. It's coming to my program soon. I know some residents there and they have been able to do any international elective they want - Africa, Costa Rica, etc. Tons of elective time esp fourth year. Definitely a must interview if you're lucky enough to snag one.

Ectopic,

I'd love to have you in Temple but, as an Aggie, I'd really recommend you not make the above mistake again. That's Texas A&M/Scott & White.

I hope things work out where you can come here. I'm a wee bit biased, but I think we have a great program and I'm very happy to be here.

Take care,

Sorry Jeff, I'm not saying there wasn't international opportunities at Cinci. I mentioned the fact that I was specifically referring to funding. (i.e., some programs pay for your international rotations, including airfare, housing, etc.)

Does Cinci have an ultrasound fellowship now? Perhaps they've already recruited their fellowship director.

As I stated earlier, Cinci is a solid program.

Being my home program I can definitely say that they have an U/S program and a great professor (Dr. Moak). I'm not sure about the fellowship part (as I'm still looking at just becoming a resident), but they might. Overall the program is excellent (once again, from a MSIV point of view), and the only detractor for some people is that it is in the midwest. I think that the attendings are fantastic, the patient base is wonderful (tons of trauma and a county type environment), and you have outstanding residents around to make it a good experience. I can say that all the faculty/residents are smart, like to teach, and are hard working! HOpe this helps, and sorry the post isn't in the right place etc. Best of luck to everyone, I'm off to study for step II (BLAH!!!).

According to their website, looks like there isn't a fellowship (yet) and the intern rotation will start January 2006. There are electives offered for senior residents.

Cinci is still advertising for a fellowship-trained ultrasound director, which makes me think that Moak isn't fellowship trained. He trained at Alameda County/Highlands, which is known to be one of the first programs to have ultrasound training. Therefore, I'm sure he knows his stuff.

I'm sure Cinci will succeed in recruiting a great ultrasound fellowship director, start a great fellowship, and like all things they do, be one of the better ultrasound intensive programs.

Your post is dead-on. Dr. Moak isn't fellowship trained but his experience at Highland made him the resident expert when he got here. He started the initiative to get our faculty certified in U/S for a variety of applications and we're well on the way to getting most of them finished with the process. While we don't have an ultrasound director yet and are definitely playing catchup on that front the ultrasound program itself is doing well and ramping up nicely. Please let me know if you guys have any questions... I'd be glad to answer them as best I'm able.

I talked with the Medical College of Wisconsin program directer yesterday about their status on offering interviews. He said they have only sent out a small batch of obvious ones so far (ie. students who rotated through the department), and that MCW send out most interview invitations in early/mid November.

This is definitely an odd game. I hate making my interview schedule and including programs I HOPE to get an interview from!

Quite honestly I am starting to wish that they had a drop dead date of when the interviews could go out. My problem is that I am basically full with interviews now and about half of the programs are not a place I would truly consider otherwise. You know how it is, you feel the need to play the odds and make sure you have enough interviews to match....come on, you know you feel the same pressure! Anyone who sits here and chastises those who would hold on to their interviews needs to realize that this is not such a an easy thing to do.....dumping interviews prior to having a backup. If there was a drop dead date then everyone could invite at the same time. But as it stands, there seems to be a select few programs that are not going to invite people until November, and that is going to cause a mass exudus from the lesser desired interviews. We all know its going to happen. You think a program doesn't know it when you call and schedule your interview for February 8th? I know I am not putting programs I really like off until then. One I don't have a choice about because I am rotating there in January, but others I will be doing in mostly December. Its too bad that programs put so much stock in a Dean's Letter. My Dean's Interview lasted less than 5 total minutes, and he never looked up to make eye contact but maybe 3 times for a couple of seconds. Its just a formality and there can't really be any Dean's Letter that makes a program second guess a "top" applicant. Honestly, I think the Dean's Letters need to come out 1st of October instead. To try and schedule all your interviews in 3 months is not easy when you can't miss more than perhaps 3 days on any given rotation, and when many programs interview on the same days and dates restricting you even further. Man this is stressful, but at least its exciting!

I am guessing things will be pretty quiet until Nov 1 (Tues).

Should be completely insane from that point going forward!!!
