I think the in state classification forms being sent out are also a good sign as well.
Do you mean the form that tells you will be considered out of state or in state ?? Because I received that form months before my interview invitation ...

Same here I received it a month and a half before. I don't know what it means but I heard it is a good thing. I'm not putting too much weight into it though
Oh.. hmm well I'll take it then haha better than nothing

Where are you guys from? I got a call too but gave me the 21st. Wondering if its because of travel plans.

I'm not sure if the interviews are regional though, I think they just had a list of people and sent out interviews in a random order

Question since I'm a current D3 who constantly scans this site: why are people who have NOT been accepted to Maryland joining the Facebook group for Maryland? If you HAVE been accepted and are also contemplating other acceptances, cool! But if you haven't been accepted to Maryland and you're joining the Facebook group because you THINK you're automatically going to get accepted once you interview....get out of the group. That's just unfair and misrepresentative. If you haven't been accepted and I see your name on here matches the name accepted onto the group on Facebook I'm notifying the admins. For instance, if RonnyW who is from Utah on SDN and posts his info all over the place states he has an interview in March and Ronald Weasley from Utah just was added hours ago to the ACCEPTED Facebook group, I'm going to call you out. That is all for now.

Now I have a rant for everyone on here who has messaged me separately about deciding between Maryland and other schools and are bringing their stats into it. I'm just going to also put this out there: I'm in state and a D3. I chose the school for convenience and my wife has a job in Maryland. But for all you out of state kids who are holding your Maryland spot but seriously considering your in state school, just know that admissions is aware of that. It's not rocket science to figure out. In my opinion, if you're just holding onto your Maryland spot for the hell of it, and you already know you are going to go to your state school or if you're halfway across the country and have accepted a neighboring state school, just save admissions the work and call or email and drop your seat. It really isn't worth holding a spot that others are hoping for. Just a word of advice. Maryland isn't the golden egg or the golden ticket that everyone on sdn makes it out to be. You will find yourself having personal struggles in any dental school you choose. Personally I have found my fair share of struggles already here in the clinic portion of school. They have been struggles! Alot of kids my year who came in with 4.0's and 25-28 DAT's are also struggling to cope with the fact that they are doing mediocre in some of their classes because they never received a C in their life. Some kids who came here with the lowest stats in my class are at the top of the class. Also Mediasite at Maryland doesn't mean you don't have to come to class. Teachers work around that and give pop quizzes and take attendance. Baltimore can get sketchy sometimes at night but it's OK in the daytime. No dental school is perfect. Dental school in itself is expensive, a lot of work, and takes a lot of patience. Choose wisely. If moving across the country to Maryland is going to cost you an arm and a leg and you're sitting there out west with other acceptances and calculating the bills that will be factored into moving to MD, stay closer to home. If you've gotten accepted to a ton of schools and are waiting for just Maryland, take one of your offers. If you're in state and haven't been accepted or are waiting to interview and have other offers waiting from other schools in the country, go there! Get out of your comfort zone! Don't cry over spilled milk, or in this case, don't waste your time waiting on a Maryland acceptance, and if you're set on other schools and just holding on to it, let it go! You need to realize that "first dental college in the world" is just a title. The school has its pros and cons just like any other school. I have some friends who go to NYU and love it. I know some people out in California who are loving it out there. I have a sibling at Temple dental school who loves her class and loves the city of Philly. If you graduate from an accredited dental school in the US with good grades, you will get a great job offer out of school or get into your preferred specialty program. Stop believing that Maryland is the only recognized school. If you get accepted and this is your #1 then good for you! But don't just hold on to it because you think the title of the school is going to be the thing that gives you an edge. When you graduate with a DMD or a DDS, employers aren't going to rank you based on where that degree came from. Also when getting matched for GPR/AEGD/specialist programs, these programs don't give a damn about "first dental college in the world".... they care about your personal accolades and grades. End rant.

I get what you're saying and everything but there's nothing wrong with holding an acceptance for Maryland while you're waiting for your state school to accept you or holding onto a different school while you wait to see if you get accepted to Maryland.

Not sure how anyone is "wasting their time" waiting for a Maryland acceptance if that's where they really want to go. In more cases than not Maryland will end up being the most financially sound decision because of the in state tuition after the first or 2nd year of school. The only schools that can really beat that are state schools (and that too, there's a good number of state schools such as UCLA that are more expensive in state than it is to go to Maryland and get in state residency)

@blablabla1, I see you're looking to do post bacc to apply to medical school. Wrong forum perhaps? Or are you not sure of what path to pursue? If so, I can assist you in making the decision, just PM me! Also I said if Maryland is where you really want to go, that's great. Didn't say wasting time had to do with it if it's your number one choice. It was in regard to people messaging me who are indecisive. I have received many "chance me" and "help me decide" PM's from quite a few who post on the Maryland page.

gotcha, you made it sound otherwise so I was just asking in clarification!

Not sure who made you the enforcer especially since you aren't even in the class. Until the year starts, no one knows who exactly is going to be in the class. At that point, the group admins can take whatever action they want.

I think @hopefuldent6789 was just bringing up the point that if the class Facebook group is for accepted students, then maybe people who have future interviews should join with caution. I know some adcom students from schools who regularly check those groups to see who is on them via the Facebook student admins who are also a part of adcoms, so maybe it would be wise not to join a group prematurely before getting accepted... just my perspective on what he said. Maybe he's on the adcom? I don't know...

I'm not too sure either way so that leads me to my next question! When are the next round of acceptances going out? Anyone?

Lol nah I was posting on the right forum! Being honest I had a moment of panic when I had to drop the art class I was taking because I was so bad at it last week (was making me question my dexterity) and that finance thread that's stickied wasn't helping with warm feelings so it was the perfect storm to help me think "omg maybe I should just go to med school." Rest assured I realized I was being stupid and know that dental is what I want to do! Otherwise I wouldn't even be bothering posting in here anymore

And gotcha, you made it sound otherwise so I was just asking in clarification!

Noted. Well dexterity improves with time and you do need dexterity for medicine as well! Try doing art as a hobby--might be more enjoyable that way.

Bro you have no idea. Adcoms use those groups to peek into the lives of their accepted bunch. They do it everywhere. That's why the admins are usually students on adcom. If I were you and I wasn't accepted yet I wouldn't want them snooping me out on social media. Plus why would you want to join the group if you truly aren't even accepted yet? That's backwards.

Who did you interview with?
I interviewed with Dr. B. It was a friendly interview. I would also say that he asked me really good and challenging/difficult questions based on my answers. I enjoyed the challenge. I am hoping to hear back soon! Goodluck to you. I also interviewed on the same day!

Good luck. Can't wait for the good news for all of us in the next batch of acceptances.

I interviewed last week at md and thought the school was ok but was really turned off by the area its in. I felt like I was in a third world country b/c there were boarded up buildings all over the area, homeless people just lying around evrywhere, graffiti on walls around the neighborhood, litter on the streets, etc.

I looked up crime in Baltimore - if you see here? https://www.neighborhoodscout.com/md/baltimore/crime/ Baltimore scored a 2 out of 100 on the crime index (100 is the safest)! Not good. And last year there were 318 murders according to the Baltimore Sun newspaper.Really not goood!

idk, I didn't really feel comfortable walking around there, even just from my car to the buildings. Just food for thought. What did you peeps think of the area?

I haven't been accepted there yet, but as someone who has lived near the area most of my life, I can say the location isn't something that worries me very much. Take that as you will 🙂

Very true statistics. The city isn't that safe. Walking around in Philly and D.C. are safer if that gives you any comfort in how accurate this is. Homeless people everywhere throwing things on the sidewalks. I often get dropped off in front of the school. In terms of location it truly isn't the best so if location safety is something you're into then I suggest looking elsewhere because the location is not the best. Maryland has good things about it but location isn't one of them. If you're a girl you better not wear jewelry or carry a purse while walking. Walking at night is a big gamble as well because that's when the criminals lurk. If you find a dental school in a safer area then if you're interested in location safety pick the school with the safest location. The people on this forum who go to Maryland and say they aren't worried are the people who don't know a single thing about the city of Baltimore, or they live right outside it in a suburb and come visit the areas that are a lot safer to be in big groups, such as the stadiums and the Inner Harbor and the restaurants.

In other words, if you're OOS and you have a deposit down at a school in a safer area, count your lucky stars and just go there. End of story. Unless of course you HAVE to go to Maryland then by all means the school has its pros and cons like any place

Yep - I have heard a lot about safety issues at Maryland.

One of my friends had gone to the interview with a very enthusiastic desire to go to Maryland. By the time she returned, she had heard stories of at least 4 dental students having their cars broken into or knowing someone who did, etc.

Definitely take proper precautions people.

I also know a med student who is in Baltimore, and she can't wait to get out of there. She hates it but in med, reputation of the school matters a lot for residency. She's at Johns Hopkins. She has had a few close calls but is safe so far. I hope she stays safe.

Does anyone have In State cost of attendance notes from their interview or anything? I couldn't find any online, though I may not have looked in the right places.

If you thought Maryland was located in a poor area of Baltimore, Johns Hopkins makes it look like Candy Land

But yeah, I don't think any person is going to Maryland for the location unless they're deluded

Oh no 🙁 that means she has a higher risk than Maryland.

WHY DID YOU HAVE TO TELL ME THIS DR DOOM

The notes they give you in your packets during interview sessions are outdated so I advise you to calculate the cost on your own but in state I know is about $17K currently but us current students were outraged because it was recently increased.

Well why are they going there? Oh yeah it keeps being bolstered as "first dental college in the world" and the interview guides tell you it helped them get their match of choice so easily. News flash kids: it's just a regular program. Also forget the whole "take your boards after the first year" jargon because the boards are changing to just being one part by the time you young folk take the test. So it doesn't even matter anymore that you take it the summer before D2.

And if your reasons for going there focus on it helping you specialize, let me help you see the bigger picture. Matching at your choice location really depends on who you know at that point, as well as your grades and other factors such as board exam scores. Maryland isn't the easiest program so don't expect to walk in and get a 4.0. I'm lucky to have been somewhat toward the top of my class but the clinic is where me and my friends all struggle so far. Graduation can't come any faster. I'm not even sure I will complete my grad requirements in time and a lot of my friends/fellow classmates have the same worry but that's a regular thing every year at Maryland that they fail to mention to you dewy eyed school kids who are interviewing.

I asked the Director of Admissions and she told me Class of 2021 will be the last one under the old system since we take Part 1 after D1 and not D2. Good news for us, bad news for people after us.

The last Part 1 administration will be July 2020.

The last Part 2 administration will be July 2022.

Class of 2021 will squeak by.
