Official MCW Class of 2009 Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
My lord, this week has sucked the soul right out of me.

And just to answer the question about our students being crazier than librarians--on Friday of last week the library decided to unload some books. Noticing a bunch of board review books in the stack, I nearly sprinted downstairs to the ATM, picked up $5 (the books were 50 cents each). I proceeded to run right back upstairs, probably out of breath, grabbed a huge stack of the first 10 books I could find that looked useful, then paid for the books while the librarians all stared at me like I was some zoo animal.

In and of itself, not really crazy. The crazy part: the whole time I felt guilty that I was wasting 5 minutes that I could have spent studying biochem.

I got an old edition of our Devo text there for 50 cents. 10 years old but nicer than buying the new one for 50+ bucks! Or however much it was.

And as for biochem, i haven't studied that since friday. It's all been about anatomy and devo. Wednesday and thursday shall suck the big wazoo. Whatever a wazoo is.

ps...Dr. Funk...have we actually met in person?

Tell me about it. I was trying to tell my wife about the days leading up to the biochem test on Friday and I could only sum it up with "Um...things might be a little crazy these next few days."

No, Splat, not sure we've met yet. I was never able to make it to the SDN get-togethers. Lemme know if you can think of a nice non-awkward way to meet up sometime (awkward because I'm sure we'd recognize eachother by sight at this point)!

I'm the loud singing one. Or swing by table 4 West in anatomy some time. I have regular performances there.

Or look for a Horicon EMS t-shirt. I wear them all the time.

Wow.. I didn't think people were still posting here! Muscles of mastication...I thought I was the only one who thought that was funny. Bolender was pointing at V3 in the lab and talking to me about how it innervated my mastication muscles.... I had a huge smile and almost starting laughing... he just rolled his eyes and shook his head at me.

Well, this is the funny thing. The '09 thread is somewhere way, way down the page. Inches and inches away. This is the thread I started for the M0's, which so far seems to include mostly only me. But come on in, the water's fine. I'm having a blast.

I do not yet see any evidence that med students are, in fact, crazier than librarians, though. 😉

EDITED TO ADD:

Oh, wait, this is the '09 thread. I subscribed so I could eavesdrop. Reading thread titles is hard! Let's go shopping!

Arrrgh.

It's time for...Space Cataz.

I should really just go home and shave. My face.

by the way... I'm only sharing it here because I know you guys and gals will appreciate it. This really helped me study for my biochem exam; the resources are pretty incredible...almost limitless.

I particularly like the molecular rotation feature.

Speaking as a student interviewer, I can say that I'm appalled that you were accepted based on that feeble attempt. Did you honestly perform that way in your interview? Who interviewed you? Please tell me that you dropped at least one "matey." Seriously, some interviewers are just seives. 😉 (please, please, please note the sarcasm here.)

Also, I can't tell y'all how old I feel to hear M1s referencing the 2002 biochem exams--I took that thing and already it's an "old exam?" geesh. Hopefully you've heard this by now, but block 2 really is the worst (I still have no idea what/where the pterygopalatine fossa is). It truly is downhill from here...until the next block 2, at least.

OK, stop reading this and go "unwind" at your local watering hole of choice--and make Dr. Haldemann proud. 😛

I'll have you know I greeted the interviewer with an "Avast, ye!", dropped two "mateys" and was the only candidate that day who had a parrot on her shoulder. And my parrot had a peg leg and an eye patch. The only problem I had was that they thought I was kind of competitive. What kind of bull is that? I was the least competitive person in the whole freakin' place. 😉

Planks will be walked, to be sure!!! Yarr.

Andy, I know you're reading this. So look a little to the left of this screen. Yes, a little bit farther. Near my picture.

You know, my soul isn't very tender...you probably wouldn't enjoy it very much. please don't eat my soul

Aye, but who be walkin' them? That be the question.

Rob, due to his childish giggling about a certain group of "chewing" muscles in front of a professor.

Have any of you guys scheduled or done any mentor visits yet? My guy told me that Tues. mornings or Thurs/Fri afternoons work best for him, and of course we always have class at those times. I managed to schedule a couple visits when I have an off week for Medical Interviewing, but it's frustrating to try to figure out which classes I can skip.

Anyone know where we can find the spring semester schedule? I looked online, but I can only find the fall schedule posted.

Just looked at the bottom of this page and the "ads by google" were for "Pirate Swords, Treasure Chest, Jolly Roger Flag, and Pirate Eye Patch."

Damn, it's gone! I NEED a pirate eye patch. My friends helpfully draped a purple feather boa around my shoulders at my yay-I-got-into-med-school party, and I promised I would incorporate it into a One-eyed, One-Horned, Flying Purple People Eater costume for Halloween. But I'm not taking an eye out even for such good friends as they are.

okay, i'm having a huge problem.

my cabinets in the kitchen don't stay closed. I'd discovered that this is because the hinges on several of them are broken, and a spring that apparently is normally necessary for proper cabinet door adduction is missing. Some cabinets have similar but less severe symptoms.

Now here is my dilemma. It would be easy as pie to have maintenance/management fix it. But I like doing that sort of stuff--fixing stuff around the house. BUT i don't feel like shelling out the money to replace the hinges. I wonder if they'll give me new hinges or reimburse me if I hit the Home Depot and do it myself?

Cripes, life is so difficult. Guess I could always call my "relocation specialist" here and ask her. She calls me "hon."

Some places reimburse, while others get very peeved if you deviate from the official company hinge. It's wisest to ask before you fix.

Yeah, I really wanted to fix it myself. They said they would do it. But if it's anything like my dishwasher, it'll take a month.

right now Pratik, Rob, and I are skipping a review session to read about animal slaughtering statistics.

Long story short, Pratik isn't holding up his share when it comes to consuming the 90 billion or whatever animals slaughtered per year. Darn vegetarian.

Well, I have to admit I'm not eating my share of the 3 billion bushels of soybeans produced in this country last year, either. We should all go down to the Outpost and pick up some TVP right now!

However, I just made some gumbo so I'm doing my part in the consuming the evidence of the chicken massacres.

Lectures like today make my head implode from boredom.

Worst lectures EVER!!! The devo one was even worse than the biochem. Anyone can go up there are read the slides. Oh....this is Martin's estimate. One hour of lecture costs us about $50 each. The college makes about $10,000 for every hour of lecture they give. Thats just in case anyone was interested.

Did you actually stick around for the Devo lecture? I swear I almost nodded off, which would have spilled me out of my seat into the aisle. Would have been a nice break for everyone else to see me rolling down the aisle towards Dr. B like some drowsy boulder.

I woke up halfway through the 1st part of devo with drool all over myself...that lecture was so boring that I proably would have slobbered even if I had been awake, though. 😴

I skipped Devo and had fun studying it on my own while listening to that song "I Like to Move it" over and over.

And I got about 4 pages farther than you guys did in less time.

Ha!!!

Hah! If I'm a gunner I feel bad for the med students that are "relaxed!"

They don't get much more "don't give a crap" than I do at times.

But yeah, I gave up on devo lectures a long time ago. I can make so much better use of my time on my own.

haha....i skipped biochem and devo and slept in. It felt good but i think im gonna pay for it (not that going to class would have helped anyways 😴 😕 😛 ).
