Andy, there's a whole thing on the internet about 4th year scheduling. We have more requirements than I realized before. The 2 sub-I's I knew about and the internal med requirement, but didn't know about the integrative thing before. Basically, it seems to me that 4th year scheduling and the lottery can get pretty complicated. Right, Xandie and Don?

I still haven't figured out what I'm gonna do in June. I want to do my sub-I, but I still can't decide between anesthesia and ortho. And I heard that if you apply for ortho, the sub-I is considered your interview for the MCW program. So if I go that route, I had better do the ortho sub-I. I think my board score is going to play a large part in this decision. I don't have research, so I think I'll need to score really high to consider ortho. Anesthesia I'm sure still needs to be high, but not quite as high. And if I bomb it ... pathology, here I come.

For MCW Anesthesiology, they pretty much use 220 as the cutoff point to consider an applicant. So yeah, not super high, but high enough I guess.

There's also a date for all the MCW students who apply for ortho to meet (in addition to the sub-I), and basically it's the majority rules for when the date is. This past year, it was like 8 Jan. My friend had an interview in Oregon on 5 Jan, then had to fly back here for like 1 day, then fly to UC David for another interview on the 9th I think. All craziness. He was all mad because he had plans to go skiing in Whistler instead of flying back for the MCW ortho thing.
 
Andy, in answer to your question (which I can't find to quote because I'm lazy), urology interviews earlier because it has its own early match, in January. Most other things interview November-January, or some segment thereof.

And yes, it's complicated. My schedule had 118 or so ranks on it, and five of my months were guaranteed. So that's 118 ranks for six months. I can't tell you how deep on the list I went, since I don't have a copy of what it looked like, but I'm also pretty happy, so I didn't go down too far.
 
People seem to talk about performance on rotations. How do they measure or rate your performance in a given rotation?
 
Same grades as in first and second year... it's a nifty blue sheet where they rate you from 1 to 9 on a bunch of issues... history, physical exam, medical decision making, professionalism, communication, etc. Then that, plus the exam or whatever else goes into the grade, gets averaged out to your letter grade. Plus you get comments from your preceptor that turn into most of your MSPE (Dean's letter).

The exams are the shelf exams?
 
Medicine, Peds, OB/GYN, and Psych use the shelf. Anesthesia, Family, Surgery and Neuro write their own.
 
Ahh. So, it seems like your mentor might wait until the day before your blue sheet is due and just fill it out based on whatever mood they're in at the time.
 
I think they're usually pretty decent, with one glaring exception (at least in my mind).

All of my comments have been accurate... not necessarily nice, but accurate.

Yup, Urology is its own special world. Not only do they early match, but they early match by themselves.

I had 160-ish ranks for the entire year, but still got pretty much what I wanted. My Integrated Selective was lower on my list of what I wanted, but I'm not unhappy with what I got.

I think they are quite fair and accurate. However, that being said, there is a bit of luck involved in who you get assigned to for an attending. Some are more generous than others.

Um, I wouldn't worry much about peds urology call. The senior last month on peds didn't take call with us, and I'm pretty sure she had every weekend off.

Col Harts... 6pm Thursday nights.

Wednesday is Brothers' wing night starting at 9pm. I usually end up going when my friend calls and is like "Hey, wanna go to Brothers? See you downstairs in 5 min."


Xandie, it won't let me quote your text, even when I hit the quote button directly... weird.

I slept in until 7, which is way better than yesterday when I forgot to turn off my alarm clock, so I woke up at 6 and couldn't get back to sleep after going to bed at 1 b/c i watched the director's cut of Amadeus (I forgot it was 3 hours long).
 
9:37, but I could have gone another hour or two if I didn't feel guilty laying in bed when I should be studying since I didn't do anything yesterday. Stupid school, guilting me into awakening...
 
Something weird is going on with the page, which is probably why you can't quote me.

Anyway, a sub-I is a sub-internship, where you basically have the same responsibilities as an intern... the only difference is that you can't sign your own orders.
 
Just to complete the spectrum; I was awake, in bed, until 6am. I fell asleep as soon as I decided I was just going stay up all night and go to bed early the next night.

The good news is that it is 77 degrees outside.
 
I beat you all by a long shot. Got up today at 12:50pm. Went through 3 hours with of health policy, and walked the dog for almost an hour. Damn, I'm productive.

My wake-up call came at 9:30am, but I don't really remember it too much, even though I walk to the living room to get it. Which isn't a good sign - that's the only thing that's been able to get me up this year, besides paranoia.

Good thing it's supposed to cool down over the course of the week, cuz otherwise hard-core studying might be shot.

I'm sad it's gonna get cold again. I just went on a long bike ride. I'm really glad I put sunscreen on (30spf). I got slightly burnt after being out for 2 hours.

I guess I do get more done when I'm too cold to go outside, too.

I've been waiting for Blockbuster online to send me the 1st season for forever now. I've wanted to watch for a while, but I hate jumping in on shows when the characters are already established, so I'll have to wait until I can watch it from the beginning.

Anyone have any idea how this health policy test is gonna be tomorrow? I haven't seen any old exams floating around or anything. Xandie, Don?

I asked one student about it and they remembered it as similar to the Ethics exam--namely a whole bunch of "legalese" crap.

Sounds about right to me... I didn't study for it and got an 80, I think. And I'm NOT a high performer, so take that into account. Don probably got a 96 or something. Nerd. 😛

I talked to him just a couple days ago. He was busy crossdressing, I think.
 
The lady next to me in the library computer lab right now is using her mouse strangely. Instead of sliding it around the desktop, she only slides it about an inch, and then picks it up and moves it back to the original position to slide it another inch over. The result is that she's basically banging the mouse repeatedly on the desk in order to get the pointer to move a small distance on the screen. It's all I can think about sitting next to her, and it's driving me freaking insane!

apologies for the absence, gentle folk. it has been a whirlwind few days as I spent much of it arriving at my conclusion that I should in fact quit med school.

You might see me around for a little while longer as I tie up some loose ends, but I've had enough and I consider it done.
