By the way, please tell me you are kidding about this whole dropping out thing.

You know... after this whole "health policy" aka "cram our agenda down their throats, and they still don't know what 'health policy' actually is" exam, I may drop out too if I have to repeat the year.

Why didn't they explain what HMOs at stuff are? That might've been useful. Then they test on minute details, yet again! The school hates the class of 2009.

Heh...no, not really. She's actually taking an anatomy course (and another in the fall) in prep for applying to Marquette's nurse practitioner program next year.

Don't worry though, I already told her her mid-level meddling had better not take away our big profits. Well, mine at least. 😀

At 10:13 (when you posted) there was an entertaining pharm CC. The one before it, not so much.

I will be leaving school early so I can go get ready for my 7th, yes, that is 2 more than 5, meeting with my CER preceptor for my H&P. The forensic pathology lecture is incredibly boring.

Wasn't that Ed Gein who made the lampshades and other household furnishings out of human skin? The characters of Norman Bates (Psycho), Leatherface (Texas Chainsaw Massacre), and Buffalo Bill (Silence of the Lambs) were all inspired in part by Ed Gein. I haven't and won't watch anything associated with the Texas Chainsaw Massacre. One of my dad's aunt's married the dude's dad (after he changed his name to estrange himself from his son).

Actually, Texas Chainsaw Massacre was released in October of 1974, the same month that Kleason killed the two LDS missionaries. So it would seem that he was inspired by the movie, rather than the other way around.

Still, that's a few degrees of separation too close to a murderer for my taste.

There are more movies, I noticed the dates when I looked it up... I can't ever remember the dude's (Kleason's) name... I just looked up stuff to see if it was. I think one article said that the movie triggered him to murder, then others said that some of the later movies were based on the WI dude and him.

Ahhh... families. I was in England when he died there (or technically on a plane to England from France when I read about it).

hahaha....I was wondering was Oberweis was! I thought I recognized the name as a dairy (they sell the expensive milk in the fancy bottles at the grocery store). Before I realized it was a dairy, I just assumed she was drinking a fancy wheat beer from Germany.

I just finished mowing the lawn, so I'm treating myself to a Gin 'n Tonic...it's the perfect type of day to unwind with a nice G&T in the afternoon. Too bad I can only have one so I can study afterwards. My next-door neighbor stopped me while mowing so we could have a beer together, too. Old people are cool.

Have I mentioned that both of my favorite drinks came into popularity because of medicinal reasons? The Gin and Tonic came about as a way to get troops in the British army stationed in India to drink their tonic water (which contains quinine - pharm correlation!) in order to prevent malaria, and the Gimlet (gin + Rose's lime juice) was a way to get British sailors enough vitamin C to prevent scurvy (biochem correlation!).

My brother gambles on the draft, which to me sounds insanely difficult. He also does the contests online too, and a couple years ago, he placed 6th in the country for predicting the outcome of the draft. Unfortunately, you only get a prize for placing 1st. So all he got was some pride.

We picked up Adrian Peterson from Oklahoma--only the best running back in the draft! The only downside on the pick is that he's had a few injuries in college, but most of them seem to be freak accidents rather than signs of fragility. I haven't been this excited about a Vikings pick in a long, long time. Too bad I have little to no confidence in Tavaris Jackson at QB.

Wow, didn't think we'd do that well. Nice pick!! I'm not too worried about injuries. It's not too difficult to break your collarbone, esp under 25-yo. I agree about Jackson though. Just have to wait and see...

April, just do the stuff on the cards and you'll be fine. The fourth-years grade it, and they're usually pretty generous (if I'm remembering which OSCE it is correctly).

Observed clinical simulated skills crapola or something or other.

basically you take a history and/or do a physical exam on someone pretending to be a patient ("standardized patient") and you are graded on it. You have a really minor simple one first year, then second year you have the one where you do a physical on a fake patient. It's all in the STAR center here, which is a neat place what with cameras and computers everywhere.

Splat pretty much got it right. OSCE actually stands for "Objective, Standardized Clinical Examination." Unfortunately that's somewhat of a misnomer because for the most part they are neither objective nor standardized. Still, 2 out of 4 ain't bad.

Edit: Ok, the "S" may actually stand for "structured," I'm not sure. Either way, the "standardized patients" they hire for these things are very rarely standardized across the board.

It's so nice that we have this million dollar STAR facility that we go out of our way to NOT use. My 4th year for the H&P review tried to get us access to it for our last session, and got denied hardcore (not because it was already reserved, though - it just costs so damn much to staff the thing for whatever reason that they don't ever want to use it).

We did our Medicine OSCEs in it last week and there were MAJOR mechanical malfunctions. During the whole first interview, one student's exam was being broadcast over the intercoms. It was actually kinda funny, but she was doing the "cough" station while I was doing "back pain". I was very confused for a few moments about why we were discussing sputum.
