Official MCW Class of 2009 Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
except the people named Splat that were not contacted for said tennis outing? </guilt trip>

To be honest with you, the people named Funk weren't contacted either. Maybe we should protest by playing bocci ball or something.

I think we're playing tomorrow.

Happy Cows and I have extra rackets.

I haven't played bocci ball in years.

ps...for the people that didn't have the special PDA programs session today...

owamail.mcw.edu/oma will take you to the text only much faster version of your email that is very PDA friendly. for use during lecture tomorrow morning.

We should discuss the prospects of tennis formally with happycows. Since I apparently ditched out, not only on the AOA thing, but also on the Defenders of the NEish corner of the library reunion.

Well, in your defense, the NEish Corner reunion consisted solely of me. I might be convinced to grace the tennis courts with you guys if you will entertain the idea of a guys vs. gals doubles matchup.

that creates the uncomfortable problem of which side i belong on, thank you very much.

A DHT factory like you should be a shoe-in for the guys team. 😉

As for Pratik, I guess we'll have to rotate in and out, or alternatively, we could hold an American Gladiators-style competition to determine who gets to play.

Or we could get a 4th for each side and play volley-tennis. Volley ball rules with tennis equipment.

I have an odd request, but here goes. I'm in charge of getting people to respond to the 31 question's thread in the mentor forum and am looking for current students at all of the med schools of the US. So, I realize this is the class thread for the incoming class, but perhaps someone from previous classes has been helpful in answering your questions and giving you advice in this thread. I have no time to read through every single class thread to get this info, but if you could post some user names of some such people (or pm them to me, including what school you are from), I can pm them with my request. Thanks!

I'm feeling a little left out here. (re: tennis)

That's okay thought, cuz I got crap to do. But another day...

For those of you who didn't come to the intro to the wards night tonight, have your classmates beam you our handy-dandy soap note template and abbreviation list.

Sorry I wasn't there tonight Don. I went to the Brewers game and drank beer.

I don't play tennis. It's a rich white people sport, and clearly I grew up in the ghetto playing... well... run away from the cars (it's an awesome game, seriously).

Thank you, Funk and Splat, for making me laugh way too loud at 5am. I really do appreciate it... although my roommate might want to kill you now.

And also... in twenty eight hours, I'll be taking the exam. Glory hallelujah.

Pshaw. You guys and your precious "free time." I guess that means I'm going to be the best darned student here, since we all learned today that more time spent in the hospital (no matter what you're doing) always equates to a better grade.

Just like how each specialty wants to see every person go into it.

That was one question I didn't vote E on.

Yeah, I loved that session. I bet every student takes it to heart during their first rotation then immediately realizes that those weren't just rumors that we were voting on.

Kinda like how every year the administration/course directors tell us "no really, we're on your side" then proceed to do whatever they can to make our lives miserable, especially if we are acting like whiney-babies and try to dump more work on their plate.

I should've started a "Professionalism" tally yesterday.

I think that was the first time though that any of them admitted we should expect professionalism from people over us.

wow...where was I when they said that???

Gotcha covered (12). I also started a "Touchy Feely Crap That No One in the Real World Can Possibly Agree With" count (only 1, though I'm sure that will be going way up today).

Don, I was there at the AOA thingy last night. I don't know what you look like, though, so I couldn't introduce myself. Had to leave before we got to the beaming part in my group.

Time in today: 0630
Time out today: 0715

Thus concludes my junior year on the wards.

No need. I already know it. Mwa-ha-ha-ha-haaaaaaaaaaaa.....

No problem. I was the one who yelled at the very beginning.
We were supposes to beam first so those who wanted to leave could leave (we know how things work), but whatever.

Ask around for those. I hope they're helpful.

Time in: 0630. Time out: 1000.

Thus concludes my attendance of JMS lectures.

Good luck on the shelf, tomorrow, Don. It's really very easy (says me).

Oh man I hope so.

Motivation = none.

Good luck to you on the Surgery exam. I thought it was the easiest exam of the third year. Seriously, how many different ways can they ask you about the presentation of appendicitis or cholecystitis?

I'm with you on the motivation issue. I have a plan though... I think I should take the OB shelf and you can take my surgery exam. Then we don't have to study.

You can dye your hair brown, I'll do mine blonde (since clearly the main difference between you and I is our hair color). I keep trying to get Patrick to switch with me, but he's being a gigantic poopyhead about it. Grrr.

QUick question:
I am a strict no lecture goer...listen to them on my own. What classes are required M2 year. 1st semester afternoons look like: Micro lab, ethics discussions, etc. I am trying to figure out schedules with my wife who goes to work at 3pm and I am trying to be home when she goes to work to take care of the little one and avoid daycare. So which are MANDATORY? THanks so much!!

2nd question: trying to figure if cheaper to be on wife's health plan or go with my own through MCW. I don't plan on going to the MD at all, so how much do students pay a month??? Thanks so much. Congrats to everyone who is done with the boards!

Pretty much anything that's a small group session is mandatory: ethics small group, psych small group, CER stuff. Lots more small group crap than M1 year. Micro lab really isn't mandatory I don't think, but you're in groups of 3 and shouldn't really bail on your group. The only thing you're graded on in micro lab is your unknowns, and the rest of lab is basically practicing the tests so you do it right for the unknowns project. But if you're organized and know what you're doing, micro lab can be quick.

Also, for CER you don't actually meet all those times on the calendar - the class is divided into groups, so it's really more like a 1/3 of that time. You won't know the details on that til school starts.

I'm on the HMO for insurance, and it's tacked onto my loans. Just looked at my financial aid paper work and it's $2513 this year. Which I didn't even realize. For M1 year (2005-2006) it was only $2000 or $2100ish. Didn't know the price would increase like that. The PPO is more. The deductable plan is cheaper, but you have a deductable to deal with.

So I was really hoping to get my keys for my next apartment on the 2nd after orientation ends at 12:30. Yeah, no such luck. Got word that the Froedtert peeps are expected to be at the hospital at 1:30. 👎

And I'm assuming someone will be on call then that night. I really hate this "let's not tell 3rd years anything about their schedule" game.

So Froedtert call is call with your intern. Call your intern and you'll get an idea of your call. If you're not on call though, I imagine your intern *might* let you bail at 430 or something to go get your keys... just be sure that it's a one time thing, because the one comment you don't want is "always wanted to leave early".

Well, don't know my intern yet.

It's not that I need to leave early - I can get my keys probably at any point in the day (landlord is a real estate agent). It's that I can't call them this week, and schedule a day for next week because I don't know which day I'm on call, and what day not.

I'm a planner. Gotta have everything organized.

anyone have a mountain bike for sale?

free night = wasted. i watched the Reno 911!: Miami movie...which was horribly poor compared to the awesomeness that is the show.

now i'm sitting here with nothing to do.
go watched Knocked Up. It was hilarious, and Katherine Heigl is crazy hot. And I identify with Seth Rogen's hair.

sup Dave?

Yes, I realize Don and I are appropriating this thread for our own uses, but our thread is kinda sad. So anyways.

T minus three hours until my exam begins. T minus five hours until I'm officially waving goodbye to the good old JMS title. Treat it well, little ones.

You can consider yourselves a part of the class of 2009 anytime. You know, except for actually graduating with us, which would be a bad thing.

shake it! sha-sha-ka shake it! good luck, dearheart!

It's not a shelf... thank Jesus.

Does that mean it should be about stuff that they actually taught you?

Yes, in theory.

And I can thank Jeebus whenever I want.
