Official MCW Class of 2009 Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Why do I suspect that the page I just got from Gimlet isn't really from Gimlet?

akpete...I'd go with the 4th pair. MAYBE the third, but only if they're more comfortable.

At the risk of this not being seen by an M4

What books do I need for psych? Maybe I should actually start thinking about that rotation, pick my white coat up from the ball it's been in since the physical exam OSCE, and be a good JMS.

Side note: I got a warm fuzzy feeling today when I received an email saying I've been removed from CER on Angel. =) I still want to know what my grade is in that class.

Yes, I realize Don and I are appropriating this thread for our own uses, but our thread is kinda sad. So anyways.

Our thread isn't so much sad as it is dead.

I used First Aid for psych, Case Files Psychiatry and Lange Q&A.

For me this course was an anomaly in the way I studied.

Normally, I would use Blueprints, Case Files, and Pre-Test whenever there was a shelf involved.

You could probably safely remove either Blueprints OR Case Files from your reading list and do fine. It just depends on your style of learning.

Blueprints is more wordy, and doesn't cover any subject in huge detail, but can be a nice thing to read over during the first few days on a clerkship to help you land with your feet on the ground.

Case Files is condensed, high yield, and I actually like the learning system they use. I highly recommend this series.

Pre-Test is just practice questions, and they're tough, but I think they are very worth doing.

A few final thoughts before I sign off for the weekend:

1) Read up on the conditions your patients have. You will pick up a lot on the wards that will help you on the test. Often, the shelf will ask you what treatment is best, or what test is the most appropriate.
2) Read a little bit about something pertinent, every night. But...
3) If you're exhausted when you get home, don't feel guilty if you just can't stand to look at a book. Just go to bed.

Good luck M3's. This year is going to be awesome for you guys.

I agree with Don.

And I'm too tired to add anything substantive. 🙂

Dear Village Elders,

Is it possible to switch calls with someone on your track?? Is it considered poor form to do so?

My guess would be that you could, if you found someone who was willing to, but be sure to clear it with your chiefs. (This goes only for OB/GYN, on other services, you're on call with your team or your intern and you really, really SHOULD not switch.)

Happy switch day!

Good luck today, baby JMS's! (and yes, I realize most of you are already at your orientations, but I don't have anything until 9am, so I'm still at home.)

good luck. I think I saw some of them at pic 'n save last night

Reasons why I hate the NBME:

1. they exist
2. they make me take a 7 hour exam
3. they make the exam hard

and the BIG reason...
on the day after several hours of numbing and frightening orientation, and the day I'm supposed to start in the ER when I have NO idea where to go or what i will be doing....I get a HUGE envelope from them that looks all official.

So I think...my scores already? after only 2 weeks? Oh no!! Heart pounding, i make my way upstairs to the apartment. I start wondering...maybe they send out scores earlier if you fail? what's going on?

so I fumble trying to open the envelop, freaking out all along, figuring I'm just minutes away from knowing my score which could potentially ruin my day 3 hours before starting my first rotation.

And I get it open...

"you have been selected to participate in the enclosed survey regarding the USMLE Step 1 examination...."

jerks. I really appreciate the panic attack on this particular day.

Yeah, I had talked to another guy in our class that received one of those surveys about 3 days after he took the exam. He was scared at the time that they were going to report some kind of "irregularity" on his exam and accuse him of cheating or some nonsense.

they could have at least put "not your scores" on the envelope, or sent it either with or after my score. that's just plain jerking people around.

I still want my grades. 😡

I'm guessing an even 7 weeks after our last finals. 6 weeks is far too quick and, well, we all know that 8 weeks is an excessive wait.

Tallar said there's ONE class holding up the grades. Guess which one it is? I'll give you a hint. Myers said he got our grades in on 26 May.

Ooh ooh ooh! I guess Neuro!

Oh, wait.

I'm officially tired. Left hospital at 6:30 today. That better not continue.

Word of advice: Don't go outta town for a holiday weekend, then get back at 2am the day before a rotation begins.

I still need to try on my selection of new shoes for the hospital. That'll perk me up! Marc, I'll be rooting for the 4th pair.

Question: Why is David (you know) on medicine clerkship? Repeating one rotation or the whole year?

So, how was your first day? I saw the OB/GYN kids today... anyone at Froedtert or know who is? I'll be in clinic on Friday.

And, by the way, fourth year is awesome. My schedule consists mostly of half days, with four or five full days in the whole month. And two days completely off. Hooray.

Okay... he had to take two weeks off at the end of medicine because he has TB or some such... so I guess he had to repeat the entire two months.

I've heard Remy Sirken and Lisa Wang are at Froedtert.

I had my hospital paging me to find out where I was today. They were like, "Where are you? We've been calling the school to find out where you are, and no one knows!" When I called back, I was like "I'm sorry, I'm at my orientation lectures at the VA." Dr. Larson said, "You're right. You're supposed to be here; they're wrong."

that sucks.

1st day was okay. Long because all I really did was shadow today to get a feel for things. But that was good. Taking one of my intern's patients tomorrow morning - well, together with her cuz the patient's kinda complicated with a number of things going on. Several patients are being discharged tomorrow, and the rest have more than one problem. I really like my team. I think it'll be a good month. First call is Thursday.

Man, I can't believe I'm only a year away from doing rotations. I still can barely get my head around the fact that I'm gonna be an M2. I pretty much envisioned arriving in med school, starting anatomy and biochem, and then being trapped in a time warp forever afterwards. 😛 I know M2 is going to suck fiercely, but if it goes by at even half the speed that the first year went by, it's gonna fly.

I had a lot more fun M2 year than M1 year... a lot less free time, but more fun, and way better grades.

Our David?

Oh, and Xandie, you never told me who the person was that thinks they have a straight line into Ortho. Dish, baby, dish!!

And yes, fourth year is great. I don't have the cush schedule Xandie has, but I'm on Urology now, and that's what matters.

Anyone want a "Diagnostic Picture Tests in Urology" book? I have one. I can trade for psych books. 😉

Yes, "our" David.

The "good enough" for ortho's initials are BP. He has a southern accent. There's your hints... I'll PM you if you can't figure it out.

Your job this month is to find me some info for Peds Uro. Go forth and discover.

That was a rhetorical question, right? I'm at the VA for the rest of this week, and after that I'm at Froedtert. Let me know where to meet you, or we could do an open mailbox exchange.

Well, for Peds Uro, it sounds like you may have to take some weekend call at Froedtert. Which means you come in, round, and then leave by 10 or 11 at the latest. I'm doing a week there in three weeks. I'll get the dirt.

I have also figured out who you are referring to. He's in the Army, right?

I think I might be crazy. I just agreed to watch Gina's dog Wed - Sun. Apparently I didn't have enough to do. 🙄

Alright. Get me the dirt.

Yep, he's in the army. A decent partner for surgery, but such an dingus.

I'm up at Menomenee Falls starting tomorrow, apparently I'll get out early. This book should easily fit into your open box, and I could have it there tomorrow afternoon, since I have to go back to school to pick up an Rx, so that'd be no problem.

I just found that I had it in a stack of books one of my friends gave me to sell last year, and it didn't sell with the FMSA stuff, and I forgot to take it tonight.

Oh, and other people if you want to borrow stuff... I also have an Essentials of Radiology book, an Internal Med internet resource guide (gives a bunch of websites + descriptions), and Psychotropic Prescribing Guide. Begin book co-op. I might need the Psycho one now. These I thought would be useful... the Urology one just didn't make it to my car this evening. =)

Also, for anyone interested, today I came into a large supply of sutures. Let me know if you want some to practice with.

I'm at Froedtert tomorrow from 2:30 to 3:30 for lecture. I'll be in the East Clinic building on the fifth floor. I'll get these books to your mailbox sometime after lecture tomorrow.

Sweet. Thanks! I'll get your board review books back to you sometime when it's not so many books to fit into an open box.

Edit: btw... do you like Craisins?

Um, I can't say I've ever had any.

Dried cranberries (cranberry raisins)... right now they're being baked into cookies with GrapeNuts and Oatmeal.

I was bored.

Edit: Craisins are sweeter than straight up cranberries too. Man, I've made cranberry sauce, and some of those suckers don't pop, and when you eat them, you can tell.

didn't you work a lot harder for those better grades though? I still can't believe someone in your class got a 99% on the pharm final.
