So if I haven't registered for step 2 yet (cs or ck) am I in trouble trying to get in at Chicago on a decent day?

I can't pay for it right now. But my plasma donation money fund started today with a cool $25. It'll only take me 30 weeks to pay for step 2...


maybe i shoulda sucked it up and had a roommate. lesson learned. 🙄
 
It worked out for me, April, and I didn't register until early May. I wouldn't count on it, but... worth a shot. Plus, if you don't have the money, then you don't have it, whether or not someone tells you that you're late.

Harvard asks for a chief resident LOR

UCSD -- MCAT scores, all undergrad transcripts (I went to 5 including 1 in England)

And good thing we've had Family Med because apparently California requires people to have taken 4 weeks of Family Med in med school.

Alrighty, I think I'm almost done being sick, but I'm still tired. I got sent home early on my first day of peds because I was sick. And tomorrow I have to wear red... boo!

I think I remeber you all saying that renal pathology was difficult last year. Is that true?

No, ovarian pathology was. I missed mostly ovary questions on that test. However, I did miss the renal question that was taken from a tiny box about renal stones in Robbins. Seriously, I didn't miss a Becker question, but I miss the annoying crap.

the renal stuff was generally bad because of Carl, Stand up, Becker.

We've only got 1 lecture on ovarian pathology and we don't have any Becker lectures this year. We have Dunn, Hariharan, Cohen, Vasudev, and Pandit for the kidney related lectures. Thus far they seem pretty solid.

We had like 50 lectures on ovarian pathology because I ended up in the hospital with ovarian pathology in the middle of them. Then the lecturer went on to say that there was no treatment for what I had... right, I had surgery, a year ago tomorrow.

Ok, so maybe we had 1.5 weeks of lectures on it.

I like Dunn. He did our liver/ID stuff.

My ambulance service finally has internet access!!!! YESSSSS!!!!

That being said, I'm totally craving a couple good calls tonight. I'd be happy getting called for a nice minor MI, perhaps an altered mental status diabetic. No trauma tonight....cause it would most likely be outside and it's too cold.

Why did I ever leave this for med school? This is my life. my LIIIIIFE!
 
just got from a respiratory distress call.

now i'm bored and hooked myself up to the EKG for fun. This is what happens when you're alone at base all night.

normal sinus rhythm, HR 85 (normal for me).

I just finished a 24-hour shift with Milwaukee's finest, and man, people get DRUNK a lot in this town. Out of our first half dozen calls, only one didn't involve the police as well. Assault, drunk in a hotel, drunk at the clinic, bunch of drama queens faking neck injuries 🙄 Throw in a few pseudo-emergencies (heart palpitations in a healthy young adult male that had been going on for months, and a baby with a cold with some wheezes), and that's a wrap!


Oh, does a certain red-haired ER attending at 'Dert have a red-haired son in the ER at CHoW?
 
Why is 4th year scheduling soo gay? (and i dont mean happy)


Whats better for ortho...va or dert ??

I'm going to focus on the West Coast, but MCW has a great program (not top 10 or anything, but I really like it). I also have to apply where my dad or I have any sort of contact which is some in CA, some Chicago, and I worked with the dad of a resident at OHSU (and his mom is a patient of my dad, and he went in to talk to my dad to see what it's like to practice ortho in HI). My aunt also wants me to apply to Hahvahd because she works for the health care company that owns the doctors or whatever for MGH, Brigham and Women's and a couple other hospitals in Boston, and she knows most of the ortho guys there. While I hate the winter weather here and lack of mountains, I wouldn't hate staying here. Then there's the top programs my dad told me I have to apply to because he thinks I'm a genius.

Oh, btw, Pratik, ortho at the dert is busy, but fun. I'm not sure how it works at the VA, but you probably cover all services. At the Dert, they're separated. Trauma = busiest (way fun -- fractures and orthopaedic emergencies, I saw almost every orthopaedic emergency), Sports and Joints is the next most busy (joint replacement, and a lot of knee stuff).

Im not really sure if i want ortho sub i cause i really want the sports medicine outpatient aspect of it and not the surgery aspect of it. If i didnt go the ortho sub i, i would prob rank anesthesia as my top sub i but that just feels like im cheating myself out of a subi experience

Except for some of the super-competetive surgical ones, it's typically easy to get a good surg sub-i. I'm not going into a surgical field, but I ranked my medicine sub-i #1 to assure I didn't get stuck doing it in the middle of interview season like my bro did. It's sort of ridiculous IMHO that they don't create enough spots so no one gets stuck doing it in Dec or Jan that doesn't want to. Again, it depends on how competetive your surgical one will end up being and how important it is that you do it before applications and letters of recommendation go out. If you don't rank the medical one #1 I would make it #2.

For that matter some of the integrated selectives and electives can be somewhat tough to get too. REI comes to mind, I'm sure there are others. There's maybe no good general advice that works for everyone, it really depends on your personal situation and the field you are interested in.

So what are you thinking specialty-wise these days, Pratik?
 
Pratik, if you don't do an ortho sub-I, but still want to get that outpatient sports medicine experience there's an elective in family medicine for sports medicine that would be right up that ally.

I'm starting to get cold feet about ortho. The thought of not getting any interviews next year is already stressing me out a bit. We'll see how anesthesia goes in April...

Request the dert, then maybe request Dr. H. Liu. Then tell him that your 2 choices are anesthesia then ortho-- he'd let you do a lot, and he'd pry give you an honors for have anesthesia before ortho. Not that I'm saying you do, but he's a really cool attending, and you'd be in a lot of ortho cases.

Hi All, this is a repost from some other MCW threads. Sorry if it is a repeat for anyone. This is a bit off-topic, but I am curious about the softball league. I am a 2nd year pediatrics resident and wondering if we could field a team in the med student softball league. Does anyone know if resident teams are welcome in the league? Thanks for all the info! -aaron

Umm... for the resident team, you'd probably have to find out from the people who take over the Intramural Sports group. No idea who that's going to be. They'll know this summer.

Posting in 1 MCW thread'll get you an answer from at least someone in the 08-10 classes.

Not sure about the student intramural league, but I know there is a tournament between all of the different MCW residency programs sometime in the summer. Last year PM&R won in the championship game against the Orthopods.
