ha.. funny you bring this up... my dpr instructor went to NYCOM with Scandalis...he told us that Scandalis did a sports medicine internship in the NYCOM clinic, but no residency...my instructor said that although he is friendly with scandalis, he feels that it is inappropriate to have a medical school dean who has never completed residency.

Wow, any way that we can voice our opinions on this subject? That's totally inappropriate. He shouldn't even be allowed to lecture. He completed 1 year of internship? Wow...that makes him slightly more qualified to teach us than the NYCOM students graduating right now, let alone be dean.

Can we voice this as a legitimate complaint to someone at NYIT.

I mean, of all our complaints about Scandalis, this seems like the most legitimate angle to work if we're looking to get him replaced. I feel like people would see the institution as a joke if people knew about this.

This really really angers me. Who is Scandalis to start making changes when he himself couldn't finish residency.
 
I just looked up scandalis on google and while I saw the thing only about internship it said he's board certified in family practice and sports medicine which I believe is a fellowship. I may be wrong but I don't think you can just take the board exams to be board certified, I believe you need to complete residency and fellowship. It also said he's team physician for USA boxing, I don't think they'd let someone work with them as a physician who didn't finish residency.

That makes me feel a little bit better.

I spoke to him when applying to NYCOM and from my conversation he did family practice and then a sports med fellowship. we briefly discussed the pathways into sports medicine.

I think it is time to move on and focus on doing well for this last exam and 2nd year so we can rock the boards.

i agree we should focus on studying and move forward. However, I'm not one to feed the rumor mill. My dpr instructor is credible, and it certainly is possible to be board certified when only completing an internship. THat is all that is required to open a practice in NY. Furthermore, if you research his credentials on the internet, only his internship information is available. Please fill me in on where to find info on his residency and fellowship. I'd be curious to put this to rest.

Now they use white smoke for that right?

A few days ago I was in NYCOM I and smelled cigarette smoke throughout the stairwells, I guess that was the sign the dean was chosen...that or some smoker in the study room was too lazy to walk down a flight of stairs.

I know that PM&R has been trying to gain access to Sports Medicine fellowships for quite some time. Acess is held by Primary Care Specialties(EM, family practice, etc.). I don't see how someone who did not complete a residency could gain access to a Sports Med Fellowship and PM&R trained docs are sitting in the cold.

I'm a first year student but I do not see why someone needs to have completed a residency to be a successful dean. Maybe an MPH or PhD Dean could do just as well. A vision and being in touch with trends in med schools and your students are key. Perhaps Scandalis does not fit all three but I need to find a way to stay on my plan despite the changes.

we are really starting to sound like the jaded 2nd years. :laugh:

You might ask him or one of the faculty. Or take a good look at his walls the next time you visit. He completed a rotating osteopathic internship at Massapequa General, and was board certified in Family and Sports medicine, but he never did an approved residency in either. This is sadly pretty normal for a lot of the older clincial faculty who had slightly fewer residencies to choose from than we do and you still only need the internship to be an FP by AOA standards, though they are in the proccess of phasing in a required FP residency over the next few years. Still, nycom used to have access to more new york hosptials than it does now and I've met NYCOM FP's who graduated around the same time as Scandalis and did residencies at Columbia, so it's not like he didn't have the option.

Can't you technically apply for a residency anywhere? Not just in the NYCOMEC?

Scandalis could care less about us. He seems more concerned with money and board passing rates. I agree he should be concerned about board passing rates, but he's not going to improve those passing rates by having us spend more of our valuable time in lecture halls and increasing the number of people remediating courses. On the other hand, he may be trying to fail out the lower 1/3 of the class and figures that will improve board scores.
 
Does anyone know what the school's policy on malpractice coverage is? I've been accepted to a kick ass research program for the summer in Philadelphia but they want a letter stating Im covered for malpractice under NYCOM since I'd be a visiting student. Somehow, I'm sure NYCOM will f*ck me over in this.

I think you need a CV of the researcher and need to contact Pat. They do this for 3rd/4th years so don't think NYCOM is out to screw you if it is not in their policy for preclinical years. My impression is that NYCOM would like it if more students did research. the opportunities are numerous through the summer program. I remember at the interview they gave us an article about a student who recently published some research.

They were encouraging students to apply for the sloan-kettering research, which included some clinical stuff. Unless sloan-kettering's malpractice covered them instead? hmmmm
 
Just taking some time off derm to bs on this website..... So... who's concerned about next year and the quality of education we're getting? I know I am. Gotta love the NYIT money making machine. PS i hear plastic man has a prolapsed rectum...Ill!!!

Eeeeeevillll caterpillar....

When I was little and didn't know better I used to squish caterpillars and watch what colors would slowly ooze out.. some of them were cooooool...

So anyway is that why Plasticman is walkin around all bow-legged? 😉 Or is there some other reason... hmmmm...
 
No one really knows what's going on with Anatomy. The administration doesnt even have the final corriculum set. They'll be working on it this summer. We'l know more Tuesday after the class officers meet with Dr. S about the new policy changes.

With that being said, EC, what would you recommend we do? Will it be worthwhile for us to talk to anyone in administration? Is there any action that can be taken on our part. I have even had a professor at our school tell a group of us students to try to put pressure on the administration to make changes, b/c they will not listen to the faculty! He was sorta pleeing with us that we need to do something.

Something is fishy at NYCOM. Something just aint right. Why would a school consistently make changes that are worse than the previous policies? For instance, the new gym is a complete joke. If you're going to spend all the money to construct a new gym wouldn't you make it bigger and better than the previous one? The new one is smaller and worse! Then I found out the truth - they did not move the gym from one building to the other to better the gym, but simply b/c they needed to downsize it, b/c the old gym has now been turned into multi-purpose rooms!

I'm starting to see the big picture though. At first I kept wondering what was up with all these apparently random changes to our curriculum. But now I'm starting to see that all the changes are aimed in one direction --> structure and conformity. The new dean wants the school to become very regimented and have us students there 5 days/week. I wouldn't be suprised if they started enforcing a dress code next. These changes shouldn't really suprise anybody; the dean's good friend, Dr. Elkowitz is ex-military. Why a medical school should be turned into a boot camp? I'm not quite sure. I can tell you, this past year was by far the hardest thing I've ever done in my life, and that was without having to worry about getting to class every day!

The only thing I could think of is to have the students write emails to all the administraters expressing how they feel. Make sure to send it to Dr. S and Barbera Ross lee. The more students that do that the easier it would be for them to realize that they may not be doing the right thing. It will also show that the student body is united in their ideas and opinions. besides that there really isnt much we can do except go through the SGA. Email Mike Cantrowitz about your concerns. The more emails that go out the better.

Also, I agree with making attendence mandatory for those who take retake or remediation. Why punish the entire class?

Dean of student life isnt even a dean. She's just a director of student affairs and according to her we cant have class meetings without her there. There's a lot of behind the scenes political BS that goes on at NYCOM. More than you would think. She feels as though everything must go through her first so she can censor what goes on. I remeber her walking out of a class meeting because one of the officers said the gym hrs. were unreasonable. That's a perfect example of the type of personalities the admin at our school have. Classes should not be manditory.... what are we in high school. I always thought it was my cash and my education

I think many of us tried this when we had that "class meeting" where the dean shot us all down and told us what he was going to do. If you remember correctly, the meeting ran out of time and Linda said for all of us to email the dean and it seems that everyone I spoke to did. I spent a lot of time putting together a letter to him that night and never got a responce. I'm not sure that anyone that emailed him that day did.

I'm at the point now when I say screw it, unless we get a major reaction from most of the student body against these changes nothing is going to happen. Its one more year that we have to be on campus, hopefully 3rd and 4th year will be much better. I find it ironic however that the dean is doing all this crap and turning the student body against him. In his speach of why he should be dean he said that when he was a student everyone hated the dean and thats why few of the alumni from his generation are in contact with the school. It looks like that cycle will continue for another generation of NYCOM grads.

I guess i wasnt paying enough attn at the OMM review, does anyone remember which ribs we are responsible for treating with Muscle energy and counterstrain?
i know the fellows mentioned something abt not having to know Rib 1...

You know, Dr. Scandals has the opportunity to really vault NYCOM far above and beyond other schools if he can work out that deal he mentioned a while ago with Nassau County Medical (assuming he wasn't misleading about that whole thing). If we got that contract, attendance wouldn't matter so much for you guys because, well I think they would have better lecturers, both from the hospitals and drawn in from other schools. I think people would actually enjoy going to class. We would certainly have more research opportunities, which would mean more money for the school. This would strengthen the basic sciences department. Assuming Nassau County isn't bleeding money, it would also help alleviate the financial burden of having to carry NYIT on our shoulders. Further, it would draw in more competitive applicants and the admin. wouldn't have to worry about supposedly trying to increase board scores/pass rates. It would also cause that annoying buzz in our ears known as Touro-Harlem to go away b/c it would open up more rotation sites. It would really be a great asset to NYCOM and if Dr Tom can pull that deal off, I think he'd go down as one of the better deans.

But who knows if it will actually happen..

hey nyc... we do NOT have to do ME to the 1st rib, or to ribs 11-12...we only to perform muscle energy on ribs 2-10.. we DO however, have to treat the counterstrain point for the 1st rib...both anterior and posterior.

Did anyone go to Friday's review. I remember Steppe said something once about 3 questions per lecture. Does that mean lecture hours are not important?

I definately heard this from a few 4th years. He DID a residency but i think it was only a year or so, he somehow slipped through some cracks.
Another interesting thing i heard is when he was on a plane to a convention someone needed CPR and scandalis refused!! i dont know if its true but it makes sense.

Either way i dont think he is qualified to be a dean. Makes too many bad choices.

So what the heck do we do about the damn attendence policy?? Maybe a petition. Did anyone read the rulebook, CAN we sue for something like this?

I think we CAN sue, but I'm not sure how well it would hold up since I'm sure that somewhere we signed something that they can alter our education any way they feel is best for us. On the other hand, the whole idea of bringing a lawsuit may just make them feel like it's not worth it because of the bad press they would get.
