Hey, We have 1 room open in a 4 bedroom/2.5 bathroom duplex house in Glen Cove. The House is on a quiet private road, right off of Glen Cove road and about an 8 minute commute to the nycom campus. The House is in great condition and we also have a washer/Dryer downstairs. It's located walking distance from downtown glen cove and everything you could need including grocery stores, 2 gyms, a plethora of places to eat, movie theatre, local bars Etc. Is also only a half mile from the Glen Street Train station and close to 2 other LIRR stations.

Rent is $550 a month + utilities and the Lease starts July 1. This room opening won't last long and is really a great find at this price. call 732-778-8034 if you are interested.

hey, i dont mean to bother you guys, but im starting in the class of 2011 and was wondering what the 1st unit you guys covered was when you began if anyone remembers.

So this summer I'm working at a children's hospital in the OR learning about anesthesia. It's my second week. I head into the OR, introduce myself to the anesthesia fellow, blah blah. So he's telling me about the inhalational agents, giving me the story on the patient, her vitals.. and then he goes "Ok watch this monitor for a few seconds. I'm gonna go have a cup of coffee. You know how to work the intercom system right?" My heart drops. Seriously, he wants me to monitor this patient alone on my second week when I clearly know nothing?? "If anything happens, if she gets hypotensive or anything, pick up the phone and dial 43553 and say 'anesthesia OR 1 NOW' you got that? I need some coffee." And he walks towards the door. The brick I **** must've been heard around the world. On the other side of the curtain is the chief of surgery, I mean this guy is a real serious dude, has done some huge things I'm talking procedures named after him. And if he even wants the bed raised, I dunno what the hell to do! So I turn around and stare at the monitor and pray just pray that everything stays smooth during surgery. 43553, 43553, 43553 I'm sayin over and over to myself. It's just coffee he'll be back soon..
And then I feel a tap on my shoulder and the fellow says "Nah man I'm just kiddin I can't leave you in charge here" and starts crackin up. Apparently the whole OR was watching as well and was quite amused. 😳

Haha, excellent. Did you go over some pathophys or pharm? You can get some tips to shine in ICC when you have to revive/manage stan in 2nd year.

I'm in the ER this summer. Attended some lectures and we had a lecture on hyperthermia which was cool since we covered that in first year. Got a deeper understanding of it though.

And then I feel a tap on my shoulder and the fellow says "Nah man I'm just kiddin I can't leave you in charge here" and starts crackin up. Apparently the whole OR was watching as well and was quite amused. 😳

Haha that's awesome...for some strange reason last night I dreamt that I was back on my school bus in elementary school and Dr. Elkowitz was was following us in his lexus convertable harassing the driver. Anyone going into psych??

maybe i am asking this question ahead of time but...guys could u please tell me how do u get those summer fellowships???🙂🙂🙂It sounds awsome...Thanks a lot...

Ha, this one's easy. The bus represents your mother obviously since she transported you into this world. Dr. Elk represents your father chasing after your mother, so of course you want to kill him and marry your mother.

It's never too early to make connections. I started contacted places to rotate at before I began first year. If you know what you want to do, start making contacts for shadowing, rotating, etc.

That's what I was afraid of. 😕

How do u contact them? Just coming in and ask?

How do u contact them? Just coming in and ask?
I started by finding a DO in my area in the field I am interested in by using the AOA website. There may be a much greater number of MD's in every field; however, there are also more MD students, pre-allo students, etc. hunting them down for shadowing. I contacted him through email and he gave me a phone number to call to setup a time to visit him. Through him, I found out about the residency director under whom he did his residency. Just as in every business, connections make a huge difference...

these are not fellowships.

1a) some lecturers will state they are PDs (program directors) of a residency program and invite students to visit their program. talk to them after lecture or during breaks. Some are not PDs but just as good to talk to.

1b) going to club meetings and meeting the lecturer. You do not have to be a member to attend meetings but they may ask you to refrain from eating their food. :meanie: Saw this happen once.

2) contacting any NYCOM adjunct lecturer working in a hospital.

3) in middle of 1st year you will be given a lecture on summer research and the list will include opportunities to work in the hospital.

4)volunteer in a NYCOM regional hospital and talk to some PDs. you could do this now.

as plasticman stated you can make these contacts anywhere/anytime and don't need to wait for a formal program to set this up for you. Learn to ask for things now. This will be a part of your career as you probably learned when volunteering and getting LORs in undergrad.

I've never seen that happen, but my friends and I are always down for dropping in on any meeting so long as they have free food. :meanie:

Despite the IT dept's denial of POP compatibility, the incoming server mymail.nyit.edu defiinitely works when receiving mail in microsoft outlook. I have used it all year. However, sending mail does not work using mymail.nyit.edu as the server. It probably would work using a different port but I don't know which one and it would be too hard to guess. What you can do is use your primary ISP outgoing server address, in my case its mail.optonline.net.

As for a windows mobile smartphone, the incoming server is still mymail.nyit.edu. Sending mail is a little bit harder. You will need to use a different POP email account for sending. I use gmail and when people receive mail sent from my smartphone it says from "[email protected] sent on behalf of [email protected]". In the outgoing server box you would use, for gmail, smtp.gmail.com:465. Then you have to check the box that the outgoing server requires authentication. Next in the outgoing server settings you can specify a different username and password for your outgoing server which would be your username and password for gmail. Theoretically, this will work using any POP enabled email account as long as you have the proper server address, however, I do not guarantee that the on behalf of [email protected] will be included with any service other than gmail. I hope that was clear enough. Good luck.

Excellent! I got this working on my cell phone incoming mail. At this point I don't plan to use outgoing mail.

On my phone one of the pages prompts for outgoing, incoming, and domain. I left domain blank and just put what you mentioned for gmail outgoing in case I use it in the future. How come I didn't need to put anything for domain? Is there anything I should put there?

Thanks.

Nothing needs to be put in the domain field when using gmail. Certain other providers may require something but I'm not sure.

Hi All - I will be starting at NYCOM this fall...just wanted to know how long it took for you to get the loan disbursement for you living expenses? I am just trying to figure out a budget for the rest of the summer. Thanks in advance

I don't think it was until the middle to end of September that we actually got the money. Someone correct me if i'm wrong.

Yeah I remember having to use other funds for at least a month or so.

While we're on the topic of disbursement, I have a question: Only half of our loans to live on are disbursed to use at the beginning of the year; the other half is disbursed to us halfway through the year. Does NYCOM already have all of our money and holds onto half of it? Or do the lenders give it to them in two spurts? Also, when do we start paying interest on it? If we start paying interest at the beginning of the year, I want the entire sum so I can put it into HSBC and make some money back on it.

something I was wondering also. Let me know if you get a straight answer. Thanks!

Does anyone remember the average and SD for the lab practical in fundamentals? I'm putting all of my grades into a spread sheet and that's the only one I'm missing.

Can someone PLEASE explain the SD stuff. if 80 is the average and sd is 8 for example. Then 50% got between 72 and 88, right? and another ?something? got 88-96 and 64-72.

or is the 72-88 group make up 66%? Either way whats the something?

I feel dumber by the minute this summer.

Who else doesnt remember any **** we learned?

Haha yeah I'm not really sure what SD is either!

One SD is 68%, two standard deviations away means 95% and 3 SD is 99%. For example, if the average was 70 with a SD of 5, that means 68% of the class scored b/w 65 & 75. This is assuming a normal distribution.

hey,

is anyone else not seeing a grade next to integumentary system when you go to NYITconnect?
I have all my other grades except that

thanx

Yeah mine is the same too.

Thanks, so in your case. 95% got b/w 60 and 80, correct? with 27% getting either b/w 60-65 and 75-80. Am i right?

About GRADES, same problem. talk about the slowness of nycom. how difficult is it to post the damn grades???

Yea...this NYCOM not posting grades thing really pisses me off. My wife's company has a tuition reimbursement thing that pays me money per credit and I can't collect the money until all of the credits for the year are posted.

What takes them so long to post the grades? We've been done for over a month now.

I think that sounds right.

I think that sounds right.

Is it possible to get 90 + on the tests🙂?? Or u supposed to be very very very smart and a good test taker???

Is it possible to get 90 + on the tests🙂?? Or u supposed to be very very very smart and a good test taker???
I would say the latter. Most of my friends, including myself, study very hard and haven't honored. However, I spend a good amount of time reading textbooks and step 1 books rather than focusing on memorizing powerpoints, so I don't know how that affects things. Study hard, but don't be disappointed if you don't honor. There is a fellow at our school who always barely passed the NYCOM exams, then scored 95% on COMLEX step 1 and 99% on USMLE step1. 😱

Is it possible to get 90 + on the tests🙂?? Or u supposed to be very very very smart and a good test taker???

It is definitely possible, but the other comment was correct, it basically entails knowing all the powerpoint info COLD
maybe it would just be better to pass the exams and study for step 1 instead of spending more time on the powerpoints just to be able to honor..hmm

disclaimer: it's been a good night in the alcohol consumption department, so take the following with a grain of drunken salt:

a.) i dunno about lecture based...the ever-gracious hunter-gatherer, jasonud and plasticman (amongst others) are a better judge of that, but in DPC HA! haha. uh, no. maybe 1 or 2 ppl get over a 90 every now and then on an exam.

b.) it doesn't matter worth a damn what number grade you get in either program in terms of an actual number. it's all H/P/F, no letter grades, and it's all percentages, so all that matters is where you fall in the curve as long as you pass, which is anywhere from a 65-70 depending on the mean.

c.) be happy if you pass the first two years. give away all notions of smart = A's. it doesn't. no patient is going to give a flying f%^& what grades you got if you're a good doctor...remember the joke: what do you call the person who graduates last from the worst medical school? Doctor.

d.) boards matter WAY more than grades. and not killing patients matters WAY more than the boards. so study to not kill patients, not for school tests or even so much for boards as that (but for boards more than school tests).

e.) acting like you know what you're doing is as important, at least initially, as knowing what you're doing. fake it 'till you make it and all that. spelling out "you" and leaving off the gazillion question marks is a nice start towards seeming more outwardly competent, at least in my snarky, mean book. remember that profs and the like are evaluating your potential as a colleague, not cutting you slack because "you're only a first year." making connections that are useful is about being professional, competent, and interested without being obsequious. and connections can get your foot in doors you numbers would otherwise have closed.

and yeah, i'm being bitchy. no need to point it out, i'm well aware of it. back to my friend Jack.

I would encourage everyone to consider DPC. Lecture based is going to mandatory attendance next year. DPC meets 3x/week, but the meetings are much shorter than an entire lecture based class day. Also, it appears that it's either not possible or just really difficult to fail out of DPC; in lecture based we had a good amount of people who couldn't cut it. DPC people don't have to pass each test; I think they just average all their exams for the entire year or something?

sure, consider it. always consider all options. BUT: as a DPC student, i can say we actually have at least as much, if not MORE (some weeks) required class time than lecture based (even if you went to all the lectures). there's a lot more to it than group. and then we have a lot of self-directed learning to get done even with as little free time as lecture based. we also, at least last year, take a crapload of more tests than the lecture ppl. b/c we take parts of all their tests with them every time as well as a bunch of out own content and clinical exams. there was a period last winter where DPC had something like 7 or 8 exams over the course of 10 days-ish.

and ppl. do fail DPC. the difference is you get the option to spend all summer studying for a comprehensive exam that you have to pass in august in order to be allowed to return for second year.

and who knows what kind of awful changes are in store for this year with the management change.

You scared me...Can u guys tell me how DPC test thing works? How to study if I want to pass 🙂? Could you please give me some adice on that?
