This is the official score release thread for the August 2006 MCAT. Feel free to post serious information and announcements about the impending score release. You can post your scores in here when the time comes as well. Post any random musings in the Official August 2006 Score Release Countdown Thread so that we can keep this one uncluttered. 🙂

Best of luck to everyone waiting!

1. Your Form (If you remember): completely forgot

2. Your Practice Score Range: 28 (first test) - 40

3. What you used to Study:
I spent maybe half the summer studying (other half in research) and took a Princeton Review course. Also did some Exam Krackers verbal passages

4. How do you feel right now?
Absolutely wonderful because I'd never gotten so high in practice tests... I don't have to think about the MCATS ever again!

Note to future test takers: My score initially hovered around the high 20s/low 30s range before shooting up in the last few weeks or so before the exam. So, don't despair if your scores stale during the first month or so; it'll work out in the end.

PS: 11
VR: 13
BS: 11

Form: No Idea

How I Studied: 4 days before the exam I decided to look over physics once, and a little bit of bio. I then took 2 practice tests, only got around 9, 9, 9 on them, so figured eh, whatever. Also, I've only been an undergrad for a year and a half, so I considered a 35 pretty damn good.

I'm really happy with this. I didn't feel super confident coming out of the test, and I had a rough summer that didn't leave me too much time to study. My practice scores for every single AAMC test was a 33, then a 38 two days before the test. Only 3 people even know I took the MCAT, so...I guess I feel like I needed to tell someone.

I took the exam in April and I got a 28Q.
PS: 11
VR: 6
BS: 11
WS: Q

I retook the exam in August and got a 33 Q.
PS: 14
VR: 8
BS: 11
WS: Q

Now I am applying this year and I am also a non-native English speaker. Do you guys think this 8 in VR is going to kill my odds? I have a 4.00 in a double major (biochem and psychology) from a good state school. I do have a good WS score from both times, and I was able to raise my overall April score by 5 points. I also have good EC's and my applications are complete at most schools. Congrats to everyone who is done! 🙂

I studied on my own for April 2006 and got a 28Q

Then I took the Kaplan course over the summer and studied like it was my full time job to get a 33+ and ended up with a 25Q

What is up with that?? I think my chances are shot now.

Hey all,
I was just wondering what you think...
A 36+ is about a 95%ile score and there have been a lot of high scores posted, I am postulating that there is a correlation between high scores and readers/posters on this website. Is it that the people who are on this website are more motivated or interested in getting in to med school than the people who are getting sub 30 scores?
It just seems that there are a lot of those so-called elusive high scores being posted. Just a thought
12/12/12P
👍

Any thoughts?

Any thoughts?

As has been stated earlier, a lot of lower scorers don't wish to post because they feel upset or bad. On the other hand, a lot of higher scorers are really excited but a lot of times, and especially if they are out of school or away from those who can relate or understand the excitement of such they feel the need to come to a community like this where there are people that understand and whom they can relate to better.

This is the reason you find a lot of people posting on here. For a lot of people the MCAT score release is an entrance point into SDN and into interacting with those who may be applying the same year as them. A lot of times, and QofQuimica and MollyMalone can vouch for this, they end up meeting the applicants in real life and sometimes become good friends. In some cases this is how people learn of whom their future classmates are before starting school. But really the app starts for everyone after they've overcome the MCAT hurdle so that's why you only see most of these people start to post after the release of MCAT scores.

If you got an 18 or 19 or god forbid lower, you probably wouldn't want to post your score. Even with a 21 or 22. But if you got at least near the average you'd more be inclined to post your scores. That's the case here on SDN. That's why you'll find people who post their scores who are more in the higher end of things then those with the lower end of things.

But does this mean that this is the extent of the applicant pool??? Quite frankly no. Many people who don't post often read SDN but as a lurker, someone who's created an account but won't use it or who hasn't created an account but reads the site.

Sweeeeeet. Happy that I only have to write it once...

Here's my tip - trust how you study at school to work for your studying for the MCATs. If you aren't the type who gets/needs/benifits from being tutored etc, then don't waste your time and money at a prep-course. I had so many people badgering me when I decided I didn't think I needed one, and yea, that stressed me out a bit. "The only people who go to med school are people who have taken Kaplan". That is my fav quote from a past Kaplan instructor, who I will add hasn't been able to get into med school himself. I should have had more confindence in my decision, because in the end it was the right one. You know yourself, don't feel like you have to follow the masses.

Hi

My August MCAT score came up as:

V 08
BS 11
PS 11
WS M

30M...

I did a little better on my practice tests (e-mcat)
so I was expecting a better score. (~33)
But this is what I got.
This is the second time that I took it,(last time was 28L, went up a little) and I really don't want to re-take it.
I just HAD ENOUGH of this mcat studying!

My GPA is 3.5 currently as a Genetic Major, and have another year to boost that hopefully to at least 3.6...

I seriously don't know if my stats are enough to apply to med school next year...
I don't think my stats are bad, but I don't think it's good.
Can anybody give me advise on what I should do?:scared:

What is your home state??? What does your extracurriculars look like??? where are you considering applying??? Are you wanting to do a joint program or a MD only program???? Those things are more important in answering your questions on chances.

Hey folks I was wondering if anyone else has not yet recieved their scores. I logged on and this is the message that appears:
"
The August 2006 scores have been loaded. If you took the exam and do not see your scores below, please contact us using the "Report a problem" link below.
MCAT Scores

You have no scores yet.

"
I'm guessing they still might be processing the scores, but that would be kind of weird, given that it has been well over 2 months.

Any words of advice, suggestions or even at this time consellation!
Thanks
JT

Thanks for the reply🙂 ,

My Home state is California. from UCI
My extracurricular is also Okay.
I am doing research for the second year, I work as part time staff (Violin teacher) at Montesorri preschool. I'm aiming for the MD (only) program.
I want to go into Pediatrics, so hopefully my part-time job at Montesorri says something.

I volunteered a year at a hospital (for Clinical exp), and also worked at a medical office for a 2~3 months.

Don't have rec of letters let.

I haven't really researched enough schools, but am aiming for a US school, hopefully in the bottom of top 50s, But I am willing to go anywhere I get accepted.

Cali schools are tough and I don't know how competitive you are for them because I'm not fully aware of the general trends in acceptance at Cali schools.

However, I'd consider applying to places in New York like NYMC and Albany and some of the SUNYs. I'd also consider SLU, GWU, Drexel, Rosalind Franklin, etc. Look through the MSAR to determine which schools you'd consider based on averages and score ranges and also curricula, number of in state verses out of state accepted, etc.

Do one thing though.....apply broadly.

If you don't get in this year, I'd recommend getting more clinical experience and doing an SMP program or retaking the MCAT depending on which med school admissions offices would recommend more.

I used Kaplan Study booklets and Practice tests.

I was really excited all week, but now I feel like I don't even care. At least I know I'll get in somewhere.

Guju pointed out one of the more obvious reasons for this skew, being the willingness to post issue. But to tackle another side of the correlation, I also wonder if the more resourceful ones score higher. Motivated and tech-savvy applicants are probably more likely to be on the forums, but I wonder if they are actually scoring higher (namely the former having less correlation). While all mentioned attributes probably bring higher scorers to SDN, I'd like to think that it is resourcefulness which best correlates and describes the difference in test-takers.

Way to go, Alisa! You have an exact score twin from last April (even the score breakdown) on SDN. Her name is Anastasis and she posts quite a bit and has been around a while.

I encountered a similar situation where my scores only shot up from very low 30's after a month of studying. After that, it seemed more a matter of filling in gaps in knowledge and becoming familiar with the test format/environment.

Again, great job (to all)!

Truly fantastic improvement! Grand kudos to you! Perhaps you could share what your study plan consisted of, especially the differences between the first exam and this later one. I imagine that might be of great use to those who are thinking of retaking but are concerned that many do not improve their scores when doing so.

I had a big jump from my last tests (i.e. 8-9 pts)

This time around scored:
11PS
11VR
13BS
Q
35Q

Form BT..felt very confident coming out of the tests but never thought I would get this result....so so so happy though 🙂 🙂

From this my third and final time....I used kaplan material, EK for verbal, I had tons of old noted, and alot of reviewing of my old practice exams and what I did wrong, so I really tried to learn the concept to the point where I had a rock solid understanding of concepts, and could apply them to the actual MCAT.

I dont remember how many FL's I took but it was alot...proabably more around 11-12, some of them I did sections at a time, but I thinkI did 6 actual sit down 8 hr tests with proctors and all.

Sooo based on my story/result...dont give up if you didn't get the score you wanted the first or second time, you can improve! Make adjustments and dont be afraid to really test what methods work for you.

Good luck to you all and congrats to all you guys who had such amazing scores!

AAMC9:41
AAMC5:37

3. What you used to Study:

TPR, Berkeley Review materials, EK 101 Verbal

4. How do you feel right now?
Relieved. I definitely found practice tests most useful, especially if you start a month early with an aamc per week. EK Verbal was very helpful and highly recommend. Don't even bother with Kaplan or TPR verbal passages. TPR classes were not very helpful at all. I found myself skipping often and just studying on my own (required since I had fulltime job as well). Great job to all and best of luck to those of you applying this year.

13/13/13 P = 39P

I was a little miffed about the P but I wasn't suprised, as I wasn't having a good day for writing (and my penmanship is beyond awful). I'm not touching the test ever again as I wasn't expecting to get above 33-34 on the other stuff. The P can stay!

*don't let anybody tell you that "statistically speaking you will probably score the same if not 1-2 pt.s lower. group data does not apply to individual effort. congrats to everybody who got the scores they wanted or got scores that most of us would want 😉

btw i was going caribbean for awhile (jan 07 admission) till my scores came in.. hopefully ill have a "home" in the dirty dirty (read "Georgia") come August

Congratulations to all of you!! 👍
My best wishes with your applications.

cheers

there are ups and downs in life and my mcat score was no different...the breakdown for a total 29R...8PS🙁 , 8BS🙁 , 13VR🙂 . Any advice on how to go about studying for the PS and BS? I took Kaplan and did 6 Full lengths. Should I even apply with the two 8s? Any advice would be 'preciated!

I got a 30P 9V, 9PS, 12BS. Test form was BS or something. Wondering if I should take it again next summer. Any comments? My GPA is 3.65. Been doing research since my freshman yr. If I take it next summer and also apply at the same time, do I have to tell the schools to hold off review until my new scores come out? Let me know plz.

If you decide to retake since it was your sciences that were low, then I'd recommend doing all the AAMC tests, going over material until you understand it conceptually even if you have to go back to text books. Do topical tests from Kaplan and also do other practice problems like from EK 1001 books especially bio or if you know anyone that took TPR then do their Science workbook or see if you can get it from ebay.

I'd recommend thinking about things on a more conceptual level rather then just trying memorize facts. But in the end lots of practice.

Go over all practice exams and solutions to every thing. Figure out your weaknesses and concentrate on that. Check out the subforums for more specific advice.

Just a slightly connected thought: those who score 36+ are probably going to be the cool kids going to John Hopkins / Mayo / Yale / Harvard, etc.... those of us regulars w/"average" scores (30Q for me) are going to our less exciting, but equally acceptable state schools. So way to go all you super smarties, but I gotta say, I am not ashamed of my two point improvement from a 28O to a 30Q. Those two points should be the difference between being waitlisted to two schools last year and getting an acceptance or two this year! And that, my friends, is definitely good enough for me.

Although it would be a hell of lot more fun to tell people I got a 37R... 😉

Considering how many times I've visited as a guest, and scanned these forums to make sure other people were going through the same pre- and post-MCAT jitters as I was, I'm surprised it's taken me this long to actually register and contribute myself. A good MCAT score was just the incentive I needed...

1. Your Form (If you remember): BG, I think.

2. Your Practice Score Range:

31 on my first, diagnostic one (AAMC 5, I think).
33-40 on the next 7, which were all EK or AAMC tests. I got a 38 on my last practice, a week before the real one.

3. What you used to Study:

EK comprehensive study guide and audio osmosis. I took 8 or so FL practice tests over the couple months before the August test.

4. How do you feel right now?

Spectacular... I thought I'd do pretty well on the real thing, 'cause I tend to be a good test-taker, but a 41 was past what I had been dreaming of... Now I just need to get through one more year at my job so I can actually get into the application process.

There is a really high percentage of people doing absolutely super on the MCAT at SDN. I am honored to be amongst such bright peers. At my school students are lucky to get a 27.

Cheers everyone! Perhaps we will meet at an interview and we'll never know. 😱 😱

I got a 28P. omg... I'm not going to school next year, let alone my "dream" schools and programs. X_X

Your Form (If you remember): FK.

Your Practice Score Range: 25-34

What you used to Study: Kaplan Course and books.

How do you feel right now? I felt $#itty at first. I changed all of the schools on my AMCAS. I thought about adding DO schools. I thought about heading for the Caribbean. WTF??? 8 and a P?! I'm a social science/humanities major!! doh! I never got below a 9 on VR practices. I even felt confident about those sections more than the PS and BS. I even followed Kaplan's 5 steps, which I had considered a good strategy but maybe now I should have tried something else... O_O Kaplan and a free Princeton essay grader both rated me in the R-S range usually. ;_; I should have just written out my essay in forum/AIM-style. I probably would have done better.

All well... I'm pretty sure it's my score... unless somebody switched my grid thing. One of the proctors seemed sketchy. 😉 Nah... but it's still kind of shocking that I'm that bad/dumb. What a tragedy for me. The end.

On the other hand, congrats to everyone who did so well! Anyway, good luck to all applicants and re-takers!! 🙂 🙂

Form:
EK (or maybe BK) sounds right, but I can't remember.

Studied:
Kaplan Books, not course.

Practice Scores:
Didn't check my score just befor the exam, but I tended to get
11-12 V
10B
12P

Score:
9V 10B 13P S (32S)

Previously:
9V 10B 13P R (32R)
11V 8B 8P R (27R)

I previously tried applying with the 32R and didn't get any interviews, hence, I rewrote.

I'm very disappointed since upping my WS isn't likely to help me. In particular, I really expected a better VR score.

It's funny, since my PS and VR scores were good on practice, I studied BS all-out and did pretty much nothing for PS (or VR). I still managed to do well in PS, and I still didn't do any better in BS. Seems like focused studying doesn't help me.

You didn't get any interviews with a 32 and 9VR? That's a good score imo. What schools did you apply to? What kind of ECs and grades do you have? Very odd you didn't get a single interview.

So here we are with scores:

PS 10
VR 12
WS Q
BS 14

36Q is four points higher than the goal I set for myself. I guess the $$ spent on Kaplan were worth it after all...(EDIT) oh, and forgot my practice range was only 30-33 guess the test day jitters were no big deal...

Note: last time I wrote (Aug 2001) I was at PS 9, BS 10, VR 10, WS Q. Even after a haitus from school, you can improve your score drastically - even while working full time and getting those pesky volunteer hours in too...

37R. 15PS/11VR/11BS with an R for WS.

The imbalance is scaring me...I would have preferred 13/12/12. Anybody have any input? Should i retake? Haha i probably shoulda eaten lunch that day.

ok just checking but there's no summary data still right? if there is, can someone post the link pleeeeease😳

32T (11 PS, 11 VR, 10 BS).

Very relieved I don't have to retake the Beast.

Hey I just took a look at your mdapps, with your GPA I'd apply broadly to some of the lower tier schools too. I'd apply to places like Rosalind Franklin, NYMC, Albany, etc.

Gujudoc you are so helpful, I've read many of your posts of encouragement throughout the threads.
