This thread is for this year's applicants who are beginning to work on their personal statements. If you're looking for someone to read your PS, check out the list of volunteers below In the most recent post ONLY!!

Link to last year's thread

If you are willing to volunteer, the thread will be self regulated this year. Respond below, following the instructions at the end of this post, with your credentials and specific things you are willing to edit for (content only, grammar only, etc). Please read the full list of rules posted below before you volunteer or contact a reader, and good luck to the 2019-2020 applicants.

Specific comments, questions, or complaints can be addressed to me (@Lucca), @gyngyn, @Matthew9Thirtyfive , @OchemOficionado, or @PapaGuava via PM.

Official Personal Statement Guide thread, Alejandro's Personal Statement Advice, and Depakote's Personal Statement Guide/Tips.
  • If you are looking for feedback on your personal statement, it is better to PM individual users here whose strengths are better suited to your needs rather than posting a response in this thread.
  • Once you contact a reader and they agree to read your personal statement, please email it to them as a Word document with your SDN username in the title. Including your SDN username makes it easier for the readers to keep track of who they've already read for and who they still need to read. DO NOT JUST PM YOUR STATEMENT TO A READER.
Rules for Readers:
  • If you would like to be added or deleted from the list, please make sure that you follow the directions below, and add or delete yourself.
  • As a volunteer, you may read as many or as few personal statements as you'd like or have time for. If you will be unavailable for a certain time or have been inundated with requests, simply take yourself off of the list using the instructions below
  • If you receive a request and are unable to fulfill it, please respond to the writer so he/she is not waiting for a response and can request help from elsewhere.
  • For your protection, we will not allow you to post your email addresses here. All email addresses will be edited out of the list and any further posts containing email addresses will be edited to remove them. Writers will contact you via PM and you can exchange email addresses privately.
  • As this is on a volunteer basis, absolutely NO solicitation of money for your services will be tolerated. Volunteers who violate this policy will be removed from the list and subject to further disciplinary action.
  • Obviously don't share someone's PS with anyone else without the writer's permission
Instructions for Readers
  1. Click "quote" on the most recent post.
  2. Add your SDN screen name, your credentials, and specific things you are willing to edit for (content only, grammar only, etc). DO NOT post your email address. If you aren't sure how to write this part, look at the OP from last year's thread for examples.
  3. Delete the quote tags at both the top and the bottom.
  4. If you are unable to read any more personal statements, please come back and move your name into the inactive list
Here's an example of how to volunteer as a reader and how to provide useful info on experience, availability:

  • FriendlySDNer| MD class of 2018, will start family med residency in June | interviewer (x4 years) and voting admissions committee member (x1 year) at T20 med school. Will comment on grammar, content, theme, flow, anything you want. Will not be available after June 12 2018.
This thread is brought to you by the Pre-Allopathic Volunteer Staff
Please remember that these people are volunteering their time. Be nice to them!

Good luck! Let me know if you have questions!

I am going to bump this and see if anyone else wants to jump on this bandwagon. I've done about 5 PS today. Would be nice to have some more volunteers :cat:

| Accepted MD/PhD student, so technically class of 2027 (if my PhD only takes 4 years). Received several interviews, and my PS was commented on at most of them. Was a philosophy minor, so a very strong argumentative essay background. I will provide comments on anything that seems necessary. Also willing to read "why MD/PhD" essays, but NOT research statements. Available until August 9.

As someone who previously volunteered time reading personal statements, and not really having the financial freedom to pay for someone to do it, I really appreciate what you guys are doing here! I will say, I discovered a bit late www.cholinergy.com and had great experiences using this website. It's affordable since you're already paying a ton of money for applications, and it's always nice to get another outside opinion.
Also highly recommend this site. I had paid $30 for my review, but it looks like they're discounting it right now at $15. Highly underrated and significantly cheaper than other sites I've seen. And the fact that a doc reviews it is a huge plus.

Because of the dark theme? It was developed by a radiologist. I was skeptical at first, too, but decided to give it a shot after a couple of my friends had great experiences with them. My reviewer was VERY critical of my personal statement (it came back to me entirely marked up), but I was more confident with it after their revisions.

My case might be a little different, too, since I didn't really grow up with a bunch of doctors in my family - it was difficult to get the lingo down in my personal statement.

Well the first person to post it also deleted it. Then it's hard to find other sources for it on Google

Soooo... I just finished my PS rough draft. Tried really hard to make it not cringey or entitled, but at the same time convincing on why I want to be a doctor. Any takers or do I just send them it unsolicited?

Ask the Active readers if they will read them before attaching or sending a google doc. Also, I am one of the readers, so feel free to send to me if you would like.

Hey,

If anyone could graciously read through my personal statement and provide constructive feedback on the content, flow, and overall effectiveness that would be highly appreciated. Please direct message me if you're able to. Appreciate all the feedback I can get.

Thank you for your help Mr. Babe 🙂 I echo this and just would like to mention 2 general problems that I keep seeing.
  1. Not mentioning anything about what a physician actually does, which is diagnosing and treating patients. You don't have to say those exact words, but you need to somehow mention the role of a physician. A lot of the focus I see in most personal statements is on the patients, which is great, but talk about what the PHYSICIAN does. That is what you are going to medical school to be.
  2. Lecturing or preaching. Basically, making statements like "doctors are supposed to do this" or "it is important in medicine..." etc. It just comes off as a little know it all-ish and isn't really appropriate because you aren't yet a physician. So, refrain from making blanket statements like these.
Of course, I am not an admissions committee member, so I am just passing along the advice that I got when editing my statement. It worked out well for me, so I just want to help others achieve their goal.

This has already been seconded so let me thirded it. This is why I dropped it and why I wrote my general advice thread...because it is literally 95% of the feedback I give people. It is odd - the people who send out PS between October and March are almost universally better than the last minute writings...like, try to send out something that you have reviewed yourself before sending it out if you want genuine feedback that will improve the PS.

To add on my own general advice:

First, the "successful" personal statements that I've read have several things in common: i) they are clear in their writing, and convey to the reader ii) a strong sense of who they are as a person, iii) their motivations behind pursuing medicine, and iv) their journey up until this point. Many folks do a disservice to their application by trying too hard to be stand out and be unique. The fluff prevents my getting to truly know an applicant on paper.

Second, assume the reviewer has the attention span of a squirrel and that you get 10 seconds of their time (generally good advice for clinical rotations, residency and beyond as well!). Can the reviewer skim through the essay and still check off the four criteria I mentioned? If not, then back to the drawing board. Just my thoughts.

Also, please read the instructions from the original post which clearly state:

Once you contact a reader and they agree to read your personal statement, please email it to them as a Word document with your SDN username in the title. Including your SDN username makes it easier for the readers to keep track of who they've already read for and who they still need to read. DO NOT JUST PM YOUR STATEMENT TO A READER.

Please please please put your username in the title. I do not want to confuse anyone's personal statement and everyone basically names the PS the same thing.

This might seen like a stupid question , where can I get the readers Email address? Do I just start a conversation on sdn and attach my personal statement. Im a new member to sdn and could not find Emails , Thank you!

Available until August 9

Arsartium:
MD class of 2023. Not a strict grammarian, but I have a knack for content, phrasing, and flow. Available until June 30.

acciobutterbeer:
MD class of 2023. Happy to help, especially with theme, content, and structure! Available until June 10.

Application and secondaries season is here, I'm all done! If you want some general advice (and probably 95% of the advice I would have given you anyways) here is my general advice forum:
A guide to the Personal Statement: A general advice forum
Feel free to leave a comment on it if you have a question about your PS!
TulsaJoe - PS Backlog + on vacation!
Mr. Babe - Too many bad personal statements and I'm tired of giving the same advice. Please read the thread about personal statements and get a good draft going. If you truly think your PS is different......send me a pm and I'll give it a look.
faerie62: Ahh, did not anticipate having so many to read! Will take a few days to catch up.

Looking to get some feedback on my PS for this reapplicant cycle! It's loaded on Google Docs along with my prior copies, so if anyone has some insight they'd like to share, please feel free to PM me!

Much appreciated

Nontraditional - Veteran - Applying for 2024 admission - so I may not have as much insight of those already accepted / doctors. Most of my advice will be rather general; spelling, grammar, flow, and overall structure. Hopefully, you have hashed things out to some extent and you are on at least your 5th draft to save both of our time. Available until June 10.

spelling (should be no mistakes when you send it to someone for advice),
Just a heads up, you will get a fair amount of ESL (English as a second language) applicants who will GREATLY appreciate any spelling or word-context changes you can aid with.

Great point - edited that part out.

MD class of 2023. Accepted to multiple T20s with a somewhat out-of-the-box PS (I can pass on advice I received myself). I am by no means an expert, just looking to give back to the community here. Available until mid June.

Again, the original post clearly states:

Once you contact a reader and they agree to read your personal statement, please email it to them as a Word document with your SDN username in the title. Including your SDN username makes it easier for the readers to keep track of who they've already read for and who they still need to read. DO NOT JUST PM YOUR STATEMENT TO A READER

I do not mind if it is not in a word doc, but please put your SDN username in the title of the document. From here on out, I will not read any statements that are just emailed to me without me saying whether or not I am able to read it. It is not hard to follow these two instructions. If you just PM me your statement without inquiring if I am available first, I will send you a PM back saying I cannot read it. Sorry, not sorry. You are going into professional school and a rigorous application cycle; the least you could do is respect our time and follow the instructions.

Yeah I'm sure they forgot to include their username because they don't respect you or your time. You go and demand that respect.
