Hey guys,
Well, everything worked out. I got the call from Linda this morning making it official, then I spoke with Dr. Curtiss and told him the BU deposit situation, so he faxed me my admissions letter(s) so I won't be out $500. Anyways, to answer some questions, I sent an email to Dr. Curtiss telling him that I thought Pitt's program was a great fit for me, and to ask if the admissions committee weighs interest or of it is a set ranked list. He emailed me back that they weigh interest, then he sent an email yesterday asking if I was still interested. I said HELL's YES! He emiled me back saying he was "fairly confident" I would get in off the waitlist within the next 10 days. I got the call and email today, one day aint bad!
 
ROOMMATE NEEDED

About you: female, preferably from Pittsburgh but if not that's ok. You are easy-going, tolerant, not a slob nor a gung-ho conservative. Wants to hang out with roommate at home or on the town--sometimes. Late-night person.

About me: female, politically left-ish, likes to listen to jazz but also other music (except country and hard rock/metal). Doesn't have a car. Environmentally conscientious. Hopes to study every day (maybe fantasizing here...). Sleeps anywhere from 11pm-1am+. Not a bad cook 😉 Slightly cynical, very laugh-happy. 🙂

Oh. I haven't picked out a place yet, but I thought we could split a 2br apt in Shadyside or something.

Please don't post that address. It is not meant for general use, and as such the address should not be posted on this forum. Why don't you email the addmissions office to find it out.
[the addresses have been given out to the wrong people before and we ALL end up getting adds and such - no fun to get junk mail]

When does Pitt start? I can't find a calendar anywhere on the website, and I haven't gotten anything in the mail about orientation.
 
i've not gotten orientation info either, but classes start 8/18. and i think we have to be there a week earlier for orientation, 8/11.

Hey Guys,
I just got back from Pittsburgh where I found an amazing apartment in Shadyside for myself, my girlfriend and my dog. The apartment was being vacated by two Pitt Med graduates who were starting their residencies (Path and Ob/Gyn) and had bought a house in PgH. They were really positive about Pitt and confirmed that we have all made a great choice in attending this school.
As to start date, the white coat ceremony is Aug. 10th and orientation starts august 11th. A bit strange to have white coat before orientation but I just got that info from Connie Dobrich so I know its correct.
Anyhow, I was reminded how beautiful Pittsburgh is as a city and I can't wait to start in the fall. cheers
 
Thanks for the calendar links. I checked them out, but I didn't see anything about orientation, which was weird. But Aug 11 sounds reasonable. Why haven't they sent us anything?
 
I've been talking with my student interviewer (a MS1/MSTP now rotating through our lab), and she's on the orientation planning committee. Guys and gals, our orientation is going to be a blast! So far there they're planninng trips to the local amusement park, white-water rafting, an evening river cruise on the gateway clipper, and a thorough tour of the local bar scene.

We have a great year to look forward to. Pitt is the place!

I tried accessing the housing/roommates section from the office for student affairs website, but it prompts me for a username and password. My acceptance letter said I should look through it, does anyone have access?

sweet! only thing is my parents will be in town that week to help me settle in. They'll think I'm just moving away to part-ay! 😕 😉
 
Hey all, I just got an email from Linda (I'm on the waitlist), she said there may be spots opening up and wondered if I was still interested. Has anyone else got something similiar?? Pitt's my first choice so hopefully it works out

when it prompts you for the username, there's also a link that asks you if you've forgotten your username/password. if you fill in your ssn and bday they'll email you your info ...
 
KBCoch comes crawling back to Dean Curtiss after withdrawing her spot at Pitt, "Please, take me back! Take me back! Don't make me go to Cleveland! I'm sorry I withdrew. It was a mistake!" To which Dean Curtiss replies in true Wizard of Oz fashion, "Click your heels three times, and say There's no place like Pitt. There's no place like Pitt..." and magically, KBCoch awakes re-admitted to Pitt with ruby slippers intact. Thank you, Dean Curtiss!!

So this is what happened: Went to Pitt second look, loved Pitt, decided to go to Pitt. Got financial aid, panicked, decided to go to Case instead. Dealt with the nagging doubt about giving up Pitt. Went to Cleveland to meet roommate and find apartment. Regret hit me in the gut like a two ton sledge hammer. Realized huge mistake, panicked, and aforementioned events ensue with Edward, Good Dean of the East.

And now I'm headed for Pitt in the fall! Whoa, that was close...

So can I get back into the Pitt '07 club without re-initiation hazing?

(p.s. Nothing against Case or Cleveland. It just didn't fit like Pitt did.)

about Ruskin, is there a waiting list or is there generally a good amount of availability? I am a little up in arms about the living situation. I don't know the city at all, I don't know anyone in the city, and if I get pulled off the waitlist at Downstate I will be going there instead, hence I don't really want to sign a lease in July. I don't really know what my best option is. Wil there be decent places available in Shadyside/North Oakland if I wait until July to go look? HELP ME!!

I wouldn't depend on a place in Ruskin, but you should still have a good deal of choice in July - there are plenty of buildings in various neighborhoods that students currently live in, and you could ask on the site what they think of them. That would be the best bet if you need to rent a place without seeing it. You will, however, probably pay more that way (ie - not getting to "shop around")
 
gabes -- THANK YOU! you're awesome. I will probably take you up on it if my future roommate(s) can't.

physics -- call Greg Calig 412-624-9900, he's the property manager. He told me at Ruskin med students have priority and he reserves apts for us available August, so you should be fine if you wanna live there. I'm deciding against it though b/c it doesn't seem worth it. expensive for the area!

I've been looking for a few days now online and have been trying to stagger appointments so that I can see several in one day. Easier said than done. Next weekend I'll be in the neighborhoods looking around. I have to find something less than $700/month. Wish me luck...

Don't live in the Hill District (Oak Hill apartments), which is behind the hospitals and sports complex.
 
A week ago today, Linda emailed me and asked if I was still interested in the program because they expected spots to open up, but after I stated my interest, I haven't heard back. Anyone know what the story is???
 
I am pretty much in the same boat. I got an email back from her saying that they will let me know when spots open up. I think a couple things could be happening now. A) They are waiting for some of the people who were sent emails to respond. B) Waiting for more spots to open. C) Just messing with us. I hope I hear something this week because I need to look for apartments down there if I end up getting in. I recieved a similar sort of message from another school and it took two months for them to actually send me an acceptance. While I doubt it will take Pitt that long, be patient. I am planning on calling if I don't hear anything this week.

I would pretty much agree, except to say that it is quite possible to find a cheap place in Shadyside... There are so many places for rent here right now it is crazy, so as long as you are willing to spend a day or two looking, you should be able to find a place for the right price... The big thing is that most people don't advertise in the newspaper. That means you have to come out and drive around, then write down the numbers and call if you want a lot of choices.

For myself and my special lady who's coming with. I would really prefer a 2 bedroom for the extra lebensraum, but it looks like we might have to go with a one bedroom if we want a decent area. I guess I'll see what I can find this weekend, or next.

adding Friendship...how could I forget? Adjusting Shadyside, per auster, who I totally agree with.
 
just my $.02:

I think there are many reasonably priced houses and apts in shadyside. I pay $620/mo + elec. for a large 1br apt, private parking lot, new appliances, right on 5th ave (on which 3 bus routes travel). The cost per size/quality is comparable to most other parts of the city. Additionally, most of my neighbors are graduate students (for either Pitt of CMU), whereas I think a lot of professionals/families live in Lawrenceville/Friendship/Bloomfield/etc.

Also, I think the crime in these other areas (while not necessarily a big problem) is significantly higher than either Shadyside or Sq. Hill, and the busses that travel through the area (towards oakland) are much less frequent.

a fellow classmate looked at a place in bloomfield/friendship that seemed really nice from what she said. it is a block or two from the centre ave line. I wonder how often that runs... 😕

we were leaning away from shadyside b/c the rent seems more expensive.

Check out the Port Authority of Allegheny County website. Here's a link to the MAP of all of the bus routes. You can also go to the main website and narrow your search to neighborhoods or individual routes.

I believe the 71A route runs through Center Ave every 15-20 min...

If you mean the 71a, that is the most frequent bus running in Pittsburgh (also the oldest bus line - sorry, I was bored one day and read the bus schedule "history note"). It runs to Oakland and Downtown etc. It also might be the 54c, which doesn't run as often, but goes to a lot of fun areas... (Strip, Southside, etc)
Bloomfield is a nice cheap area, but not as "fancy" feeling as Shadyside, etc.
Just make sure you check with the student board about the rental company...

hey folks,
I don't know how the Pittsburgh rental market is like. Do people generally sign leases weeks or even months in advance? If so it sounds like I will either have to have one of you look at an apt for me, or else I will have to spend $ and fly out way in advance of my move-in date (preferably aug 1).

Yes...I think that this housing situation is complicated by the fact that Pitt does not exactly have on-campus housing for all M1s. That would be very cool if they did. I also think that finding a roommate online is more difficult than in person for out of staters. I did not participate in the second look so I am still trying to find a roommate (s) to live within walking distance of the school. Also, the Pitt board seems to have a lot of posts as it is in its infancy. But I suppose that the housing crunch is not exactly a crunch and that there are affordable options. Well...I guess I still have some time...about 1.5 months left.....

There are a ton of cheap housing options in Pittsburgh - of course, if you want "luxury" you will have to pay for it, but if you are willing to live in a fairly nice, but more run down kind of place, you can live very cheap... About roommates - I can't think of any of my classmates who have had any really bad problems with theirs, in fact, most seem to get along very well. I don't think most had met their roommates at second look - we just used the email list. I think it is well worth getting a roommate - neither of you will be home that often anyway, and you will save a ton of money. I don't regret having a roommate, and will have one probably all four years. I like to think of it in terms of the fact that I will be able to buy a house one or even two years earlier than my classmates who are paying twice as much as I am to live alone - I will be able to pay back my loans that much faster.
 
Do you know what is the email list website or link for med students? I was actually unaware that there was an e-mail list. I just thought that we were supposed to use the boards. OK...thanks auster.
 
ask the student affairs office for that info 🙂 I asked two weeks ago and they said they were working on it.
