I saw on the 2007 Roster that an number of SDNrs will be attending UCSF this year and figured we could use our own official site. Chime in...............

I see no one has responded thus far, but I'll add that I am signed up to go on the camping trip August 30th.

My housing is set up so I won't be officially moving down to The City until the 29th. I live about three hours away at present and will be on campus on Monday, the 11th, to check out a few things. If anyone else will be around it would be fun to hook up for breakfast or something.

I'm a native San Franciscan, and although I have lived elsewhere for quite a while, I am familiar with the area and the campus to a certain degree. I would be happy to answer any questions, although I may not be up on current doings.

Hey citygirl, I'm not going to UCSF (in fact I got rejected pre-secondary 😀 ) but I know there is a UCSF 2007 thread already. Do a search and you'll see it. 🙂

I will be there. Got a place in the city but haven't officially moved in yet. It isn't near UCSF, but within about a 7 minute train ride. I just didn't want to have to deal with the weather of Sunset and wanted a life where I didn't see the med school looming in the distance. Who knows, maybe I will decide later I want to be closer if I get sick of the commute.

I too am a native. I went to high school out in the Sunset. How about yourself, citygirl?

I went to Westmoor HS in Daly City. We moved to the burbs when I was six. I used to work in the Financial District way back when and commuted from DC and later Pacifica. In fact, I'll be living with my dad in Pacifica and going home on weekends when I can (Lake County). I just have to figure out the parking and/or public transportation issue.

I'll be living pretty close to campus, and I was wondering how bad parking will be in the area. I'm trying to figure out whether or not to bring my car...Any ideas?

Parking around UCSF bites. Walking is best, but public transportation around SF is really good. Definitely bring your car as there are really great things to do and see in and around SF. MUCH easier if you have a car. Check out the parking arrangements where you will be living. Most places have a few, but limited, garage spaces. Parking on the street in residential areas is okay in most areas, but watch out for street cleaning times (visibly posted). You may need a residential parking permit.

I live in Pacifica. I also hope to go to UCSF in a couple of years.

DoctorC,
I'll be living in Pacifica while I'm going to school. Too bad you aren't going now. I need a commuting buddy!!! Where are you in Pacifica? I'll be in Linda Mar.

FYI - If you have received your ID and password in the mail you can set up your UCSF e-mail account.

On the webpage follow links to Medical Students.

which webpage do you go to in order to set up the email account...thanks

Go to the School of Medicine home page. Use the pulldown menu on the left to get to Medical Students. Then click on the "Check
E-Mail" link in the upper left. Your account should already be set up based on the user ID and password that was mailed to you.

thanks citygirl...i wonder if i can change my email address its just so plain...need to add a lil spice to it...since everyone was chiming in on the housing situation for the year...i thought i would add to it...i am living in _________ neighborhood...feel free to fill that in a with a nice place...i have yet to find a place...although i cant really say that i have been looking too too hard...i have been perusing (not sure that's how u spell that but phonetics will do for now) craigslist and the roommate networking service...i am not in the area right now...which is also hampering the process...really cant find places if i cant go look at them...but such is life...question for all you san francisco ppl...is the weather really that bad...everyone keeps telling me about the fog...is it really something to be avoided...and if yes, then where should i go...who knows...ok back to work...only a few more days left...woo hoo...and a hell yeah

SF weather isn't that bad and certainly not extreme like ice and snow, but it is on the cool side. It just isn't the "sunny Califronia" some people except. The worst foggy areas are right on the beach, Daly City and upper Pacifica. UCSF is windy most of the time because its up on the hill.

Housing can be kind of scarce but rents have come down in the past couple of years and its not impossible, but don't wait too long. PM me if you are getting really short on time and can't find a place and I'll see what I can do.

About your e-mail. Yeah, boring. Me, too. But I think we have to use that one because the school sets it up. There is a "change e-mail" option on that page but I didn't look at it.

I too am in the process of finding housing. I thought I had found a place but the deal kind of fell through at the last minute. So back to searching. I am willing to spend a little more than UCSF budgets for us on housing because I figure I am going into so much debt, what is another couple grand. Plus it is still cheaper than a private school.

I just checked my e-mail account. I called them to try and change my e-mail address or get an alias because they cut off a letter in my last name, so I just think it would be confusing for people trying to find or remember my e-mail address. The guy said that it was not possible unless the registrar's office changed my ID, which I doubt they will do (but I will ask). Has anyone gotten registration information from the registrar's office? What are people's plans on buying med equipment? Anyone know if we really need anything but a stethescope?

I haven't gotten info from the Registrar other than what came in the original acceptance packet. I know we have to file some kind of study list to be officially registered but the deadline is in October. You can go to the online services of the Registrar's office and confirm your intent to register, fill out your personal data, and see what your fees are going to be. You need your ID and password for that, too.

Regarding equipment, there is an announcment posted at:

Yes, I neurotically spend a lot of time at the UCSF website.

In short, we need a stethoscope, ophthalmoscope/otoscope kit, blood pressure kit (cuff and gauge), tuning fork and reflex hammer. We have a while to get that stuff, though. Mid October, I think? I have everything but the tuning fork and reflex hammer but I should be able to scratch them up somewhere. I work for doctors so I have been given everything else as gifts from the docs or from drug company reps. I may upgrade my stethoscope. I was given a Littmann Lightweight (says "Avandia" on it, but so what). Yes, I'm very lucky. I also have a great rechargable penlight for "say ahhh". It says "Zocor" on it. 😉 Again, so what. +pissed+

Ignore the little computer throwing guy........slip of the mouse.....

Who has their computer already? I'm curious about where you went for it and how much you spent.

like many other things related to school...i havent gotten around to getting my computer...did a lil perusing but thats it...
