Official UNECOM class of 2008

Go el cheapo on the scrubs, guys. Deno's right, they're going in the fire as soon as you're done, so you don't want to be spending mucho dinero. I had a friend of mine who worked at a hospital snag me some pants and I wore all my old sorority rush T-shirts instead of scrub shirts. You don't even have to wear scrubs, you can go to goodwill and get old golf pants if you want. Anything goes, really, so I recommend (and I think I have posted this before if you want to search for it) buying something cheap and warm with no sentimental value. I also found that using old running shoes in lab was a useful way to get rid of old shoes and still have good, you know, lower limb support while in the lab forever and ever.

If any of this doesn't make sense I blame it on pathology and Doctor Cawley, PM me with questions and I'll get back to you after I've slept.

Keep resting up, guys.

Hello to all of you 2008 UNE'rs,

2 things...

1) My wife and I have had a sudden change in summer plans and are heading out of the country. We are looking for someone (a couple preferably) to look after our place and pups-(2 fairly big but sweet). We live in Cape Porpoise on a tidal inlet- cool place.

2) School insurance is HORRIBLE!!!!!!! We had our first kiddo this Fall at a birthing house in Portland. We checked in advance with Aetna (school insurance) and all was cool. It is May and they still haven't paid a dime...

UNECOM MS ~1.98

Thanks for the post oceandoc, Now I won't feel like a real lab rat in my miss-matched scrubs.... they were only 3.99 - 6.99 if you bought the leftovers!

Hey JMARRA, with vocal processing equip. it doesn't matter what your voice sounds like... 😀

Cool, I will get in touch w/ you guys!!
:luck:

Haha, thanks Gioa! Maybe I will go to UNE and discover my long lost desire to become a singer and move to vegas if the vocal equipment makes me sound that good 🙂 haha j/k
I also got the packet and have been pouring over the packet and want to be involved with almost a little bit of everything!!!!!!
The packet denfinitly increased my excitement though( as if I wasn't already excited enough to be going to UNE with such awesome people 🙂 )

All the singles already at UNE what type of insurance do you think works best for you? Thanks!

I've got the school's health insurance and although it is great for OMT visits with Dr Bell (you will meet him soon enough, he's awesome), general sick visits and the sort, it doesn't cover any specialist visits, xrays, etc nor does it cover well-women exams/annuals and the like, kinda disappointing for a school that is pushing preventative medicine. Anyway, thats pretty much the only beef that I have with the policy, otherwise it's a good deal with prescriptions, etc. (i pay 25 for brand names, 10 for generic)
Hope that helps!

Congrats to all my fellow 2nd years (that's right, we just started our first system today-Derm!)

Hi Elizabeth,

I suggest buying some cheap scrubs online (comfortscrubs.com) or at a uniform store (there is a great one in Portland). Whatever you buy you will never want to wear again because they will be absolutely disgusting after Anatomy. You will have the wonderful opportunity to burn them at the Post-Gross Toast Bonfire. Also, as next years president for the SAACOFP, I have to put in the plug for the scrubs that we are selling with the UNECOM logo. You may want to buy these for your own use (like for OPP or PJ's or whatever) and not for use in anatomy lab though.

As for what clubs you want to join, go for what you are interested in, or what you think you might be interested in. There will be a club fair during orientation so you can get to know what each club is about and what it does. Again, I have to put in another shameless plug, the SAACOFP (Family Practice organization) is the only one that includes membership to the national parent organization (ACOFP) without student membership fees! We are planning a bunch of fun things to do for next year as well as some great lectures!

All in all, don't really worry about that til you get here! Enjoy your summer!

Who says we have to wear scrubs? Can't we just sport some old sweats?

christine

I hear you JMARRA!! We could develop a new screeching technique, unique to medical students, and then sell our CDs for 20.00 a pop. It will help defer textbook costs!

...So, I was at the OMM department today and inquired about treatment for students....

I was told during my interview that student treatments were complimentary and the person I spoke with mentioned that it all goes through insurance now. Well, I have BC/BS - mainly catastrophic- and have a weird feeling about my future costs.

I was also told that the informed desk person will be in next week...

How much do treatments cost???

Has anybody experienced the OMM dept? I have heard it is good.

Thanks! :luck:

Hi Christine, Sorry to say that you cannot wear sweats. Scrubs are required for Gross Anatomy!

Hi Gioia, OMM treatments ARE complimentary for students! The department will bill your insurance BUT if your insurance does not cover the service, you are not responsible for making payment. The docs and the fellows I have seen this year who been great. I love getting treated even though it sometimes is very hard to get an appointment that fits in with our class schedules. Everyone has the same times free so they get filled up fast. Hope that puts you a bit more at ease.

🙂 B

To reiterate what MomDO2be (Hi B!) had to say about the OMM dept...yes, good stuff. Make sure you sign up early for appts with the fellows. They are amazing and were even willing to see me once or twice during a lunch hour or at the end of their day, if I couldn't get an appt. It's a great learning/teaching experience as well, and while I kept up regularl appts every 2 weeks for some ongoing stuff, let me tell you, getting treated the day before an exam was nothing but pure enjoyment. I felt like it was often the best spent hour of my pre-test day. Others may disagree, but having a little cranial-sacral or some soft tissue techniques done when the stress and tension are high was wonderful! (you'll learn what these are soon enough...no worries.)
That's my 2 cents worth...take it for what you will. 😀

Hey Everyone
I have a question regarding stethoscopes for any current UNE students. I'm an incoming MS1 starting this July. My wife wants to order me a stethoscope as a graduation gift (from undergrad) and before she does, I was wondering if anyone could tell me if there is a required model? The two I was choosing between were the Littman Master Cardiology or the Cardiology III. (I know I'm about as far removed from a cardiologist as can be, but I'd like to keep this for a long time). Her mother is a nurse and gets a discount on them, and everyone seems to agree that they are very good. The main difference between the two is that the Master Cardiology has a one-sided chestpiece, whereas the Cardiology III has a two sided chestpiece that can convert to a bell. From trying them out, I think prefer the Master Cardiology. Can anyone comment on these? Thanks.
Master Cardiology

Cardiology III

E-
Your H&P cardiology segment requires you at least simulate using a bell.
As a student, having the bell will increase your versatility for hearing low pitched sounds (especially important for picking up mitral stenosis).

I just got another big envelope from UNE, and inside, they recommend the Cardiology III. Thanks for the advice, fuegorama.

On an earlier post, some of you were interested in local organic goods. The Community Supported Agriculture farm nearby (Alfred) still has open shares to sell if any of you are interested in weekly fresh vegis.

I think 4 UNECOMers are participating. I know time is precious, but for the outdoor folk, 4 hours a week of volunteer farm work will waive your fee for the season (they have 3 spots left).

A full season share of vegis and fruits are 450$. You pickup the load once a week for 20 weeks.

check them out at www.wolfpinefarm.com

In addition to the packet of clubs, organizations and orientation details that arrived in the mail, has anyone received more information?

:luck:

Cell phone comments? It was briefly mentioned before, but does anyone have a favorite in the Biddeford area?

I supposedly live in a dead zone for coverage. ...At least that is what everyone around town says (I am .5 miles from school).

ATT seems to be pretty good for this area. It works all around campus. Verizon does not have service around here, and sprint only works in certain areas.
Adam

Thanks, Adam. You have broken the monotony of my recent string of posts. 🙂

My problem is that I am an ATT wireless customer and my service is so poor at my house that I am forced to get a land line (TW cable @ 42.15/mo. which includes unlimited national and Canadian long distance) in add'n to the cell phones that I have.

The only good news is that I can shorten the contract on one of them and be done w/ it by Sept.

I guess I won't complain then: I have heard that Sprint coverage is aweful hear as well as Verizon, and I do need a cell phone....

I appreciate your feedback.

I second the great ATT service...mine is actually a number/phone that I brought with me from PA and I had switched to a national plan before moving up here. The service is excellent, and I seem to be the only one among friends who has a cell that actually makes and receives calls in Alfond (both the classroom and study rooms...this being crucial when it's 2 am and Papa Johns needs to be ordered) 😀
I live in the Biddeford Pool and occasionally my cell drops out for about 3.2 seconds as I turn onto Mile Stretch Rd right along the ocean. Seems dependant on the weather/amount of fog, maybe I'm just dreaming tho.
Hope that helps. 🙂

Hi Everyone! My name is Yasmin and I am new to the forum. I just wanted to say hello and tell you all that I am excited to meet you in July. I can't believe how soon it is!?

A little about me, I'm living in Colorado right now--doing all sorts of part time jobs, but mainly enjoying life out here. I'm originally from New Jersey but lived in Boston for a few years after graduation and just love New England and am definitely excited be back out east.

Thanks for all the advice and suggestions you guys have come up with--this is all really helpful.

See you soon!
Yasmin

Oh, and I am definitely interested in the white water rafting trip!!

Hi Yasmin!

NAVYDOC... What kind of phone do you use?

I've been w/ ATT for a few years now and never exp'd probs. until I moved here. I noticed that the reception is awesome outside this area all the way to Freeport (love LL Bean), but it must be where I live or the phone I have...

Thanks!

:luck:

Doc OC,

Hmmm... Is there a way to clarify this information before we are billed? It seems reasonable to imagine a student sign-in or some kind of form that would prevent miscommunication and wasted time on behalf of all the involved parties.

I am curious to know what the experiences of others have been. Are there any lurkers out there that care to comment?

:luck:

Well, I think I understand it.

OMM treatment has every right to be billed through insurance, especially when Chiro visits have been covered and billed for quite some time and their practices are generally not under the auspices of a medical doctor. Somebody can twist their pinkie and get a chiro visit covered.

So it stands to reason that the system works that way (insurance billed, possible rejection, student bill, visit to the business office) because I would imagine that the more OMM/OMT treatments are billed via insurance, the more valid OMT is as a billable individual treatment method....

.... which ensures that the treatment modalities remain for the coming generations of physicians.

I just hope that individual claims aren't too messy for us because I've been there before...

Thanks for the info DocOc!

:luck:

I heard AT and T is supposed to be decent. I am with CIngulair and I know they are merging with At t and taking over the towers soon too.

Janelle

Yeah. Cingular bought ATT in the last year and I think it is definitely giving new life to ATT. I heard a rumor that a new tower is coming in soon, so I am glad to know you've heard it too.

Is anyone on ATT's GSM network? I didn't sign up for it because I was told that coverage will be even more limited until late next year.

kshkshkshkshkshkhs.... can you hear me now?

:luck:

I just got on the cingulair GSM network. Up until recently I had regional and it worked ok up there except I was always roaming which cost me a bit of cash.

hey all! for me, verizon works pretty well! i always get reception and no roaming charges in Maine! hope that helps!

smiles,
mel 😀

there was talk about this earlier on in this thread, and the general conclusion was that verizon does not work well around the area of the UNE campus (although someone mentined that verizon is working on fixing that). It does, as melly mentioned, work fine in most of the rest of maine, especially portland. however, we're almost out in the middle of the ocean out here, and it doesn't really work that well. I think my class has found that Sprint and AT&T are the best for cell phone use in this area.

-N, UNECOM '07

Oops...good point OceanDoc...I don't think I've used my cell phone on campus, but it does work well in the Saco and Portland areas! Sorry for psuedo-misinforming you all! I guess I'll throw in just half a penny of my advice then! 😳

- mel

I used Verizon at school for the past 2 years. You are off-network on campus, but I never had trouble making and receiving calls (outside, not inside buildings). As long as you have a reasonable plan, there are no extra charges for being off-network. Biggest problem is that you can't access your voicemail at school. There is probably a backdoor voicemail number, but I never bothered to figure it out. Living in Portland, the lack of voicemail at school didn't really bother all that much.

I think one of the hardest questions* to answer is, "What are the 3 most important books you have read in past 5 years." I'm a readaholic and book sale junkie! 😉

*relative statement, not to be taken literally..

:luck:

hey guys ...

unfortunately i'm stuck with verizon until at least january. so hopefully the service gets better or at least is usable until then.

i also just wanted to say au revoir for a while ... i'm leaving for europe in exactly 41 hours and will be gone pretty much until right before school starts. but i just can't wait to move all my crap out to maine as soon as i get back and meet up with all you beautiful people! 😍

and if anyone wants a postcard from magical western europe, send me your address and i'll do my best ([email protected])

cheers!

joanie

You may be able to get out of yor Verizon contract earlier than January is you wish. I called Verizon customer service the other day and told them I was moving to Biddeford. They said that since they could not provide service there, they would release me from the contract.

Would 5 other people like to place an order for nitrile gloves with me?

We each need approx. 2 boxes of gloves for the course.

If I buy a case, each box of gloves costs only 4.95.

The case has 10 boxes gloves and involves no tax or S&H.

Check out the link Nitrile gloves and let me know if you are interested. I can buy it and meet you on campus with your order.

:luck:

I agree Gioia! I packed up my booksshelves today and OMG! so many boxes! anyhow I ended up going with soe of the most recent books I liked that were fun and important
I wanted to go with harry potter but alas!
Speaking of which who else is excited about the New Harry Potter Movie coming out in june!

Janelle

Yeah, I think the Harry Potter movie is going to be great, but too scary for my son. It's going to be hard to say, " Sorry dear, we are going out to children's movie... and you can't come." 😕

Speaking of kid movies: I was dissapointed in the Shrek II trailors. Shrek I was hillarious! I'd be curious to know if anyone saw the second one...

yeah I can understand your thoughts on HP being too scary for the youngens. I havent personally seen Shrek 2 but Mel and Phil did and told me it was great but adult. Also one of my superviors at EMS saw it w his kids and said it was great they just missed the adult stuff. so that is the DL I have heard 🙂

Hello! I hope everyone is having a great memorial weekend and taking some time out to spend with their loved ones. 😍

Gioia,
sign me up for the Nitrile gloves. 👍

Shrek 2 definitely complements Shrek 1 and deals with a lot of issues of marital bliss, acceptance, and a new sidekick.

Less than eight weeks before classes start🙂.

Have a great day,
datcha

Gotcha Datcha,

Are there 3 more folks out there that want to go in on a case?

I wear a Med. I think most people are Med. or Large. So, Datcha: are you a medium too?

Hello! I hope everyone is having a great memorial weekend and taking some time out to spend with their loved ones.
...Yeah, I'm trying to drive my loved ones crazy so they don't miss me so much when classes begin! :meanie: 😀

:luck:

I liked that article. I hope they study this more fully. SOunds like a great site to work!

Janelle

Gioia,

I'll grab a couple of boxes of MED nitrile gloves. Thanks for organizing this purchase.

Shrek 2 was very funny. My favoirte was Banderas as Puss n' Boots.

Gotcha Fishy, I will send you a PM!

Is there one more person interested in 2 boxes of size medium Nitrile gloves?
Only $9.90 for both boxes of Nitrile gloves.

Thank you for posting that link, karpems!

:luck:

Okay guys, order is complete...

Including myself I have Datchado, ESK123, Fishy, and Sandyflipflops on order for two boxes each of Nitrile gloves (total price 9.90 each), size medium.

I will place the order this week and send each of you details and confirmation info.
Just let me know SOON if you change your mind.

Heaven forbid I get stuck with a case of nitrile gloves (visions of Beavis and Butthead do America come to mind)!

Thanks so much 🙂

:luck:

how do you mean full? I knowthey are done interviewing and I think think they have admitted a full class but I dont know who has accepted and what is going on with the space available or wait listed lists though. If you have any questions call lisa Lane.
