Official University of Michigan Class of 2010 Thread part 01

i posted this elsewhere on sdn, but i don't know if i'll get a response. i'm going to michigan's second look, as well as a few other schools, and i'm wondering what you all are planning to wear?

i don't know if the formal suit and tie is appropriate, but then again, remick and ruiz will probably be wearing one, so shouldn't we?

what do you think?
I am not planning to wear a suit. I'm guessing business casual will be fine.

If I find a cute skirt, maybe I'll go with that! 😛

Wait, SailCrazy, you're female??!?!?!!?!? Another androgynous screenname!!!!!

I'm a guy, in case any strange versions of my avatar confused everyone. I definitely thought SailCrazy was a guy, but I guess I'm just a sexist bastard... 😳

I wasn't on SDN when the USNews info came out last year, does the thread explode w/ people talking about how school X increased Y spots, and why school W lost Q NIH funding, etc. etc.?

As for what to wear... They show us!. Looks like casual for Friday, and shirt/tie (for guys) on Saturday. And since it looks like our pictures might be online for all to see next year, you'll want to look nice for the camera, won't you?

No worries. You were all correct. I am a guy, and no, I won't be wearing a skirt! 👍

Those pictures look great... nothing better than wearing a suit to a picnic. That's my idea of a good time! 🙄

I'll be wearing the same things I wear everyday, which is business casual.

And Sail, don't worry, I got your joke. I laughed.

I wonder if the deans will address the ranking issue.

You know someone's going to bring it up. I promise not to do it myself. I am somewhat interested in seeing what changed (if anything, maybe Yale/Baylor just got more NIH funding) however. While I hope a lot of final decisions aren't made based solely on USNews rankings, I bet a lot of "where to apply" (AMCAS) decisions are. I'll admit, some of the schools I listed were just because they were top 10/20 and the USNews listed interesting-sounding curriculi, yet I knew very little else about the school. Penn, for example.

Another question comes to mind about second look: how will they distinguish between those admitted verses those who are merely crashing (b/c they live close enough)? Would we have to sign in, get name tags, get our finger prints taken, or what? It will be interesting to see.

hmm, the new rankings surprise me, i had actually heard from some family friends that michigan, on the new usnwr was ranked 7th... this is from the mouth of a current internal med doc. but perhaps she was referring to hospital ranking instead of med school? i don't know. i won't believe anything until i see it with my own eyes...

Probably they will give everyone nametags. That's what other schools have done.

Yeah me too. I thought that was cute.

Thanks to USNew's idiocy, I have access to the 2007 rankings. I doubt many of you care, but I figured I'd see why we fell out of the "Top 10". Analysis:

Rank, Overall Score, Peer Assessment, Residency Director Assessment, GPA, MCAT, Acceptance Rate, NIH grants, NIH/faculty, faculty/student ratio, OOS tuition, enrollment

2006 rankings (2004 averages):
9 71 4.5 4.5 3.73 11.4 8.7% $294.0 $162.8 2.6 $32,366 459

2007 rankings (2005 average):
11 69 4.4 4.4 3.72 11.4 7.8% $315.2 $165.5 2.8 $34,787 688

Basically, both assessment scores dropped by 0.1 points, they're somewhat more selective, there's more money and more faculty.

I can express my feelings about USNWR in one single emoticon: :barf: I have no more to say on the topic.

Nicely said. Something that actually surprised me about the USNews, though, is that UofM gets more applications than Harvard. Seems strange, for a public school in the midwest, and I'm betting the people who initially review files don't enjoy it too much, but it definitely allows them to choose the class they want.

Alright, we need something else to talk about besides USNews. How about all the fun new buildings at UofM, as happydays and others brought up? I haven't been in the BSRB (or whatever it's called, I forget it all the time) yet, but it's huge!!! And the cardiology building will be open in time for our clinical years- anyone interested in cardio? I think I *may* be, as one of about 20 other fields I'm interested in...

As long as it's not OB/GYN, I'm interested. 😛

Sorry to keep bringing up the USNews, but the total enrollment numbers are off from 2006. The data from 2006 shows only 3 classes of 170, but the 2007 shows 4 classes. Why is this number different? Total enrollment should be the same from year to year. Weird....

Yeah, I can't wait to see the cardiology building! They had to demolish a whole parking lot for this project. It's funny how we keep building but aren't making more places for people to park.

It's a subtle hint to ride your bike more or use public transportation. Of course, you may be bleeding from a compound fracture, but the other bus passengers won't mind... And it tends to work better when the months November-March aren't included in the calendar...

I'm sure publicity has something to do with it as well. Which hospital would you rather go to:

Opening in 2007, the new Cardiology building features state-of-the-art technology, spacious private patient rooms with LCD televisions and pull-out couches for guests, world-renowned physicians, and a Starbucks on every floor!

Opening in 2007, the new 10-deck patient/visitor lot G will accommodate twice as many vehicles as the lot it is replacing. Well-lit and constantly patrolled, the building will be a pinnacle of automobile and passenger safety.

2nd look. How long has registration been closed? I wanted to attend but was waiting to sign up until I made my flight reservations from California. I was waiting for a good fare, but maybe I waited too long!

Must not have been for too long... I wonder if they normall do this, or if they really did get more interest than usual. I guess you can sign up for the waiting list...

If you really want to attend, I'd go ahead a buy the tickets. What are they going to do when you show up, boot you?

Or tell them that you alread bought the tickets and see if they'll sign you up right now! :meanie:

Wow, I don't know if any of you have seen this yet, but I wandered over to the University of Michigan Health System Website, and it reports that, due to engineers' findings of structural unsoundness in the foundation, University Hospital is going to have to close as soon as patients can be relocated! There's nothing specific about how long "repairs" may take, but it does say they will likely only be temporary; Michigan's going to have to totally rebuild their main hospital as soon as possible! I don't know what to say!!! :scared:

So Chouster, what are your plans for the MD/PhD? It looks like you've done 2 grad years at Michigan already, are those going to shorten your MSTP time, or are you effectively starting all over?

And I saw you recommended Med Center Court. Will keep that in mind. Do you happen to know if they (or Island Drive) tend to run out of any apartments before school starts, or if a certain style (2 bdrm, large 1 bdrm) are more likely to fill up...

looks like i might be coming to michigan! ever since i was accepted i have tried not to even think about michigan, because it was too depressing to think that i could get into such a great school and not be able to go - too expensive.

they offered me a pretty big scholarship, and i think i've gotta take it. i haven't been accepted to any schools that are anywhere near the level of michigan, and with the scholarship it's now definitely possible i'll be in ann arbor this fall.

see you then! go blue!

Hey guys!

I just watched part of this show call "First Days." This episode is on first year interns at UMich!!! It will air again tomorrow at 2pm on the Discovery Health channel. I was so excited when I saw the row of photographs in the hall, because in 4 years, I will also be on that wall!!

Dajimmers, the two years I've already spent here fulfill what would normally be my first year in the graduate phase. After completing the first two years of medical school and returning to graduate school I won't have to worry about any graduate courses or preliminary exams because I'm getting all that overwith right now 😀 . So compared to other MSTPers in our class, I can just dive head-first straight into research upon my return to graduate school. I've already chosen my thesis lab (so I don't have to bother with rotations and all that crap anymore) and am currently working on a project that can eventually become part of my thesis assuming I stay on top of it during medical school. Timewise, overall, I may graduate in 6 to 6.5 years from now if I bust some major ass and have a little luck on my side as well.

Medical Center Court is one or two steps above Island Drive Apartments. While the rents are comparable, I think the units in Medical Center court are a little better in terms of how spacious it feels and the complex itself isn't as ghetto or old fashioned as Island Drive is. The units don't rent up as fast as they claim they do. I waited 3 weeks after I looked at their units and there were still plenty left for me to pick from despite their claim that they were filling up quickly. The one thing I reocmmend is shell out the extra $50 a month and get a second or third floor apartment as the first floor bedroom windows are literally right next to the driveway where cars pass by all the time.

Oh yea, in case I forgot... MICHIGAN MEDICAL BABY!

I was just at the admin office to ask about the financial aid info. they actually want you to submit your FAFSA before 3/31, but you don't have to file your taxes before then. You can submit the real figures later on; for now, the estimated figures will be ok. They will start doing estimates on your financial aid package very soon, even if you only have the estimated figures in your FAFSA. The real figures on how much you'll be getting will start sometime in May, also depending on when you file your taxes. I hope this clears it up for some people; I know I was confused.

to answer Modang: We're now engaged. I'll be a June bride!!!!
 I called on Friday in order to verify that they had everything from me that they needed. (They did.) I was also told that at the end of this week or the beginning of next an email will go out with instructions for requesting and estimate.

What I don't understand is this: If you've submitted your actual info, why wouldn't they just work on your real offer? Why give an estimate now and wait until May for the real deal? 😕

Does Michigan want our tax forms? All of my other schools asked for photocopies of these forms, but I don't see such a request in the Michigan instructions. Just checking...

Nope, they don't need your tax forms, just your FAFSA. Michigan is once again the most efficient school I have seen.

Chouster: WHAAA WHAAA!!

they said that if you submit the real thing, then your estimate will be very close to the actual amount.

I take it the rest of you don't really watch the discovery health channel.

I watch it a lot and I noticed First Days was filmed at UMich like last summer. Does it still come on?

Hey SailCrazy how did you get your name to be so bold?

I turned in my FAFSA and the Michigan FinAid form and when I called to see if they had received everything they said that I needed to send in copies of my parents' signed tax returns. so...FYI, maybe you should double check - if I hadn't called, I don't know how I would have known I needed to send in extra crap. In other news, hope y'all are having a fabulous day. Go Blue! Why? Because we're better than everyone else. USNews be damned. 😉

Did you send in estimates?

I watched it when I had it. Then Comcast took the digital cable away from my broak a$$. I think my parents have it, I'll be able to catch it in May!

Apparently they have copies of the tapes in the library and show them on CCTV at UofM. We can have "First Day" parties next year and see what our lives are going to be! I'm a dork!

And Sail, I want to be bold!

I'd heard (probably in this thread) that if you filled out your FAFSA before your parents had finished their taxes that they requested the documents.
