Glad I don't have to hope about the quality of my clinical education.

i know ur just trying to get under sno's skin haha, and he can indeed be a little too low on th pH scale (sorry dude, oh and ur welcome for the info), but i've got to say the quality isn't in doubt...any of those options will work fine for that purpose. i luv ya to death dude, but i'd be much, much more worried about being treated as a bitch at parkland...one of the reasons i ranked utsw so low. even my faculty interviewer there told me i'd be disappointed with how harshly some of the rotations treat med students, a fact i've heard 4th years from utmb confirm from their conversations with utsw kids on the residency int trail. just a heads up...regardless, best of luck to you!

Glad I don't have to hope about the quality of my clinical education.
Hoping about location not quality, idiot.

Edit: Haha, didn't see Kudu had posted.

Whatever helps you sleep at night. You're the one HOPING you don't have a fragmented, decentralized clinical education while I already know I won't.

Brooke you are just so allsome, i think every1 on this site wants to be just like u!!!!11!!!!

I'm going to guess you're talking abou t st. lukes...i think that's the one i heard them tossing around last nov, among others. not sure i'd be excited though...i'd be pissed if i had to drive 1-2 hrs and deal with that parking. hopefully if it goes through they'll make it voluntary.

Most likely voluntary... but I wouldn't really mind since I'm not an island dweller anyways. I would also assume there would be some $$ changing hands to make up the costs to students, but I think it would be a great learning option.

yeah you're right, if it's voluntary it's a nice addition for ya'll. i like the whole med school a la carte idea. btw, which hospital did you have your baby at?

Hey everyone! I just found this studentdoctor network about a week ago.

I'm so excited that med school is just around the corner( and I got accepted to my number one choice!). Is everyone else as excited as I am? I guess for all of those who are already in medical school might be a little jaded from the reality of medicine but, I'm still viewing this world through child's eyes. Probably change in the next year or so, haha.

Honestly, I finally feel like I'm going to around people who are more like me, compared to my peers in HS and college.

Hopefully the school will be fully functional and able to accomadate us by the time we start in August.

I have no doubt it'll be able to accommodate the educational, etc needs of your class. Enjoy the time of suspense and anticipation, its a great feeling.

Hey IC, glad to hear you're excited about UTMB, and I definitely join you in that excitement/anticipation. I was glad to see how excited the surgeons I shadowed were about medicine after so many years in the field. They seemed to say that the negatives are hyped too much and I certainly hope that is true.
I also hope that I can be around people more like myself in med school, but the Republic of Texas thread has me a bit nervous. Though many of them are future A&M and Tech students so hopefully the student body at UTMB is more, umm, liberal. I'm going to remain optimistic at least.

Thanks, good to know I'll have upper classman like you at UTMB.

DrSno

Haha, I wouldn't worry too much. I enjoy living in Austin, if that gives you a hint to where I lean😀

UTMB faculty csection at St. Johns -- the UTMB Faculty do a lot of their private patients over there. It was too close to hurricane for me to do UTMB but I preferred private anyways. They had hurricane damage over there too -- opened the ORs a week before I delivered. No cafeteria, lots of construction - only stayed the minimum of 48hours because of it and they were at full capacity..

lol. dont worry sno- i'm right there with you 🙂

Hi, I'm hoping to get a little advice. I have a apartment in Bellaire (south Houston) in my mother's house. (Attic converted to bedroom, living room, bathroom.) My wife and I could stay there for free and my wife could work in Houston. But, I would have to commute to Galveston. I was thinking I could commute when there is no traffic and maybe drive into Galveston late at night and sleep in one of the student centers after studying if I didn't want to get up at 6am. This would help us save a lot of money on rent. Even if we did pay for rent in Galveston, I'm worried about the apartment situation down there and if there's another hurricane. Also, I'm planing on doing the Global Health Track and be out of the country a lot. (Hoping to do summers away, and a year abroad between 3rd and 4th year.) If we were living at my mother's it would make those trips a lot more financially viable not having to worry about the rent while we're gone. Not to mention moving. Lastly, with students being sent away for rotations, (I'd love a lot of away rotations in Houston) maybe it would even help to be based in Houston for 3rd and 4th year? I'm open to lot's of suggestions and opintions! Thanks.

I know someone already mentioned traffic on 45, but if you'll be living in the Bellaire area you could technically take HWY 6 and skip all the crazy US45 Houston traffic.

I myself am from Houston, and although I have considered staying where I live know (West Houston), I think I'll probably be moving in with my mom out in Pearland. It wont be too much closer but I'll def be able to avoid crazy downtown traffic. Plus for me, the commute will be the same as for undergrad which would typically take me 40mins driving into downtown Houston or 1hr+ on the Metro, so I wouldnt be too worried about missing out on "2hrs of studying".

You would miss the Houston 45 traffic but run right into the Galveston 45 traffic. Mornings are rough on the causeway... but they did just open the new section of bridge so that should theoretically help a little bit. However it never fails that there will be a wreck the morning of an exam, OSCE, clinical experience, etc.
Also - those 2 hours make much more of a difference than undergrad.... much, much more.

Looks like I'm sticking with my pre-match offer.

Matched to Galveston this fine Friday evening/Saturday morning. 😀

I'm with you, happened the exact same way too!

Also, hey future classmates!

me too...but i put utmb #1 so it's not really a surprise...

I have been lurking on SDN for a while and just signed up today because I am officially UTMB Class of 2013. I prematched a while ago and decided it was my fav option. I'm hoping to meet some fellow classmates on here...anyone in the Houston area?🙂

Hey, welcome fizzy... Houston native here.

Thanks for the welcome! Im a Houston native as well, living here right now. Im excited about Galveston, but just worried about what will become of UTMB with the hurricane...at least we are a few years away from hospital years and maybe things will get back to normal. What made you pick UTMB...just being nosy:laugh:

Houston native here, living in Austin currently. I'm getting excited about medical school in general. I think UTMB will actually fare pretty well based on the fact that they're getting insurance and the Texas legislature and UT systems are allotting more money to us... we may come out with some pretty great facilities.

Just a little something to look forward to http://www.utmbhealthcare.org/Documents/SpecialtyCareCenter1-23-09.pdf . Congrats to everyone on their match/acceptance! Feel free to ask any questions. Welcome.

Glad to see some Houstonians...i guess there will be a lot. im excited about heading to galveston too. and i do think UTMB will end up with some nice facilities....just hope they are ready for our clinical years. i wont complain though as long as the quality of the education stays the same. Im kind of interested in the global health track myself. When do people plan on looking for apartments or moving to galveston?

Hey everyone! I'm currently a MS1 at UTMB, just thought I'd stop by and say hi! If you have any questions/concerns, feel free to PM me!

Hey! I'm planning on watching the waitlists for a bit to see if I get in anywhere else, then talking to other UTMB MS0's and finding an apartment sometime in May/June... My mom works at a high school in Katy and said that another counselor's mother owns a house right across the street from campus that she may be looking to sell right after they finish renovating :xf:

My problem is the uncertainty of the waitlist. I wouldn't want to get situated in one spot just to have another school open up and grab me... Is there any way to hold a spot in a frat or any free lists to hold spots in apt complexes in Galveston?

If you want to discuss a fraternity let me know. I am part of Theta Kappa Psi (www.thetakappapsi.com). We were the only fraternity not get to Ike damage and have consistenly averaged 10-15 points over the school's step 1 average to name a couple of perks.

obviously this year might be more of an adventure than in the past with regards to housing, we'll have to see. when i got in 2 years ago, the rule of thumb, at least for the "big 3" apt complexes on the eastern side (casa caribe, carelton courtyards, villa marina), was to get on the waitlist before spring break to give yourself the best shot at what you wanted. people were still able to find places late though.

are the "big 3" considered to be the best 3 apt complexes?

For those of you living on the island right now, how safe is it?

Not sure about the apartment complexes and which are "the good ones" since I dont live there. However, the island is very safe.

Agreed, its safe. Of course I wouldn't walk down the middle of the projects expecting not to get messed with.

are the "big 3" considered to be the best 3 apt complexes?

not necessarily. they
are not going to wow you. by "big 3" i mean they're probably the largest complexes on the eastern side and also probably house the most students....they're solid bets, iow. there are other complexes around those with students, and some on the west end as well...The broadwater, etc...they tend to be nicer/$$. the two condo complexes over by the marina are popular too. parks at cedar lawn is more in the middle of the island.

you can also check craigslist (search the htown and gtown ones). or galveston mls. might be a good idea to use an apt finder or agent this year. you can drive around a few or so blocks south of campus and find houses that've been split for rent not listed. i think tramonterealty.com listed rentals as well...been awhile though

of course the frats are probably the best $ deal. keep an eye on the fb as people will be looking for roomates too.

there's other options, see post 51, probably missing something obvious but kudu's brain is kaput...

I live in Carelton Courtyard and absolutely love it. It's walking distance from school (including the Field House), a grocery store, Walgreen's, and the beach! The rent is really affordable and the maintenance guys are great--they fix stuff really fast.

Instead of saying affordable, cheap, etc. can y'all please post the prices? Thanks!

At TKY, its $350/mo for rent, utilities, internet, cable (upgradable to HD and DVR for $20 more), access to an in house library, pool, and washer/dryer. Also, there are 9 meals a week cooked by a former cruiseline chef (M-F lunch and M-Th dinner). Not to mention the intangibles of having upperclassmen down the hall to answer questions. Meal plans are also available for $60 a month.

So are those 9 meals included in the $350? Also, is it easy to "be by yourself" in a house w/ 20 some odd people?

Yes and Yes. Most of the time in the house is gonna be by yourself. However, if you like to study with people you're sure to find that as well.

Each room just houses 1 person correct?

lol ditto...does it get prett rowdy in there sometimes? I kind of like having my own space...

The only time I would consider it getting "rowdy" is at house meetings which are only after 1st year exams, so they don't affect your education. You won't have trouble having your own space. As far as catches, there actually are none. Our fraternity is good social network that acknowledges the need to do well in school (we all want to).

I forgot to add the parties (also after 1st year exams) are epic.

I also live at Carelton Courtyard in a 1 bedroom/1 bath apartment and I pay $518/mo + bills (~$80 for elec, ~$65 cable/internet, ~$15 for water). It looks a little sketchy on the outside right now because of the hurricane, but it'll look WAY better after they fix it. 🙂

Does anyone have an update on where the anatomy lab will be located in August? Just curious. Also, does UTMB have anything similar to UTH's welcome weekend? Has anyone on here contacted UTMB about financial aid/loans? I read on their website, under financial aid, about certain forms that need to be completed in order to get things started, but it seems a little confusing. I guess I don't know what to do first.
