New to this forum....but u viet people south of the border sure seem different...heard the dental market was over saturated with viet folks......how is it in cali in terms of dentistry and life style?

how different? We pho-eating-vietnamese-americans mostly go into pharmacy, but there are some in dental and medical. In my view, from going to school, the saturation of viet folks in the dental market is around ~~~~15-20%??? California is very competitive for EVERYTHING. very overpopulated and its kind of hard to live there compared to the rest of the country. Your not just competeting against other vietnamese but many DESI, Koreans, not so much whites, middle-eastern, Chinese, etc. (CA is very diverse). What about you vietnamese-canadians? What do yall go into?

We either graduate with a degree in nail salon management or get a masters in indoor grow-ops.

Seriously, there are not many Vietnamese who do medicine or dentistry in Canada partly because these programs offer limited seating and thus are extremely competitive. The only professional program I can think of with the most number of Vietnamese is pharmacy.

i know your secret...but any good viet cook knows this....btw, since you're trying to get all the girls, you can add "good cook" to your resume. it'll attract many i'm sure. 😛

I agree, yes there are very very limited space in Canada when it comes to med and dentistry. With the biggest dentistry class at U of Toronto with 64 people, with an average entrance GPA of 3.85/4.00. So in a class usually u see 1 or 2 viet people getting in at most. Most of the other 10 dental schools have 30 or less people in their programs. I been to california once as a kid and really liked everything [from the weather, stores, atmosphere, to the women....] and was thinking of moving down there to practice once I graduate in 3 years time, but from the looks of things there seems to be toooo many viet dentist in that area already....hmmm ...maybe have to revert to specializing... anyways, thanks for your comment.

if you want to thrive in dentistry, dont live in southern california especially orange county.

:laugh: no, being able to cook isn't everything but it definitely is a plus. i have a whole long list that i won't bore everyone with but one of the things on there is being able to cook (well) 😛

so to somewhat bring it back to the op's topic, does anyone know ~how many viets (%) are at ucla? just curious...

hey can i have your complete list? =)
i dont THINK theres alot of viet at ucla dental school. were only ranked 4th out of all the asian population in population
1) Chinese
2) Filipino
3) Indians
4) Vietnamese
 
Finally a fellow Vietnamese student representing NYU!! See you in August.. BTW, what are you going to do for housing? Dorms?

Haven't even started dental school yet, and you're already calling yourself a doctor?? Not everybody who make it into dental school can graduate, no schools have 100% graduation rate...BTW, dentists aren't even real doctors you know...

no im not calling myself a doctor..im calling myself the BEST DOCTOR.those who dont graduate wont be close to becoming "thebestdoctor"

heres one of my pet peeves: people who say, "dentist arent even real doctors"

who really cares about the title.. i just like what they do. for all i care..my patients can call me Mrs.XXX

DDS=Doctor of Dental Surgery. DMD=Doctor of Dental Medicine. TheBestDoctor...you're a good doctor in everyway...or will be a good doctor😀. That lil' girl is just a bit jeoulous and she probably got caught up in the jeoulousy created by MDs because they don't make as much money as dentists.

The hardest part is getting in. Most schools have a 90% or higher passing rate. If you get in...you're pretty going to get your DMD/DDS if you work for it.

em an undergrad... 1st yr at U of Houston - not a very well-known college but it's alright, good enough... I just finished with 1st semester - got a pretty decent GPA 🙂 )... currently interested in becoming a dentist... would like to learn more about dentistry, as well as how to get into dental schools.. hope you guys can help me... tips, hints are appreciated!!! 😛

1st of all... when did most of you take DAT? (ie: fall of junior yr?? etc.)... how did "anh, chi" prepare for it? (did you use any DAT's books? enrolled in any Kaplan's courses?) and was it... hard overall/compared to MCAT? 😀 😀

Hi there,

Congrats on completing ur first semester. Uof Houston is a fine school. Well for more info, I would search on the specific schools you think you might want to attend and this SDN site because it has preety much everything and people post external links all the time. For now my best advice on how to get into dental school is just to focus on your school work and continue pounding out the grades like you did this semester.

As for the DAT I think most people take it in their 3rd year and apply in their senior year, but then again some take it during the summer transitioning from 2nd to 3rd year. I think for teh DAT, when u reach that stage, look into Kaplan its more than enough of what u need. I took both MCAT and DAT, to be honest the science weren't that different, and on average I think both tests are on the same level of difficulty. Good luck with the process and let us know what happens.

i'm taking 18 hours next semester... i'm gonna die 😱 😴
 
another advice....start finding a dentist and shadow him/her...after that try your best to get a job as a dental assistant. Good luck😀

UCLA: TheBestDoctor, Envision
NYU: craecrae, kokobean, moistener

my major is biology but i wish i went into computer graphic design.
my gpa is 3.6
my average is 20 and i had a bad reading comprehension score

some are even looking for more than that. some wants you to be a certain religion....like catholicism...some wants you to be family oriented....can cook....
