Hello all, as ohio residents we are at a crucial advantage in the application process with our abundance of medical schools. Lets all post where we have interviewed at, where we got accepted, and where we are planning on choosing for the upcoming year. Hopefully we can garner a better idea of where spots are going to be opening up and how many acceptances have been handed out, etc. If you want to post your stats, go ahead but I feel this information is rather personal so I will not be disclosing mine. Plus, feel free to discuss all ohio medical school related matters including the advantages/disadvantages of going to certain schools, etc. Ill start us off...

Interviewed at:
Toledo (12/20)
Wright State (10/19)
OSU (11/14)
NEOUCOM (01/03)

Accepted at:
WSU

Waitlisted at:
OSU

Waiting on: Toledo (Should know by the end of the month), NEOUCOM (End of February, goshhh)

CHEERS TO OHIO!

I'm from Columbus and go to Case Western Reserve University. We're kinda confused about what our institution's name is atm, so I listed my school under CWRU aka Case.

Complete at:
University of Cincinnati
WSU
CWRU aka Case
OSU
NEOUCOM
Toledo

Interviewed at/interview offers:
University of Cincinnati (11/19)
WSU (11/28)
CWRU aka Case (12/10)
OSU (1/30)

Accepted at:
University of Cincinnati 🙂

On Hold:
WSU
CWRU aka Case

More details: http://www.mdapplicants.com/viewprofile.php?myid=9153.

I haven't heard anything back from Toledo or NEOUCOM. I'm planning to contact them on Monday to ask how things are going.

I'm assuming that when I'm on hold, it actually means that I may or may not be placed on a waitlist, and that the decision to waitlist is going to be put on hold until May.

I hear OSU gets back to you quick after the interview, so I hope to hear back on how I do by Valentine's Day.

Interviewed:

OSU (coming up)
Wright State
Cinci
NEOUCOM
Toledo
CCLCM

Accepted:

Wright State
Cinci
NEOUCOM (not accepting my acceptance)

Still waiting on Toledo and CCLCM.

I am really interested to know what people think of Cinci. I know it's a good school but when I was there I just didn't get great vibes from the place (unlike Toledo or CCLCM, both of which I loved, and Wright State to some extent).

I had wonderful interviewing experiences at Toledo, WSU and OSU. Both WSU and Toledo were extremely lowkey and the questions they asked were primarily from your amcas application as well just a few ethics-based questions.

NEOUCOM was interesting in that you can definately tell the difference in cliques between the direct admits and the BS/MDs (As in they sat together at lunch and lectures, etc.) Im not sure if they really mesh all that well but I did hear from several of the direct admits that the BS/MDs are absolutely brilliant but kinda immature. Interesting nonetheless...

:hello: yay for ohio residents!

You know, I got the same vibe from Cinci and ended up withdrawing. Everything about the school on paper seemed fantastic. Perhaps it's because it was my first interview, but I just didn't really jive with the place at all. My interviewer wasn't very enthusiastic, I didn't see any students the entire day and my tour guides were tired and seemed bored (granted they just finished taking exams...), and I felt like I was touring the basement of a run-down high school. The new building seems nice, Children's Hospital is fantastic for peds, but I didn't understand what the hype was about.

However, I loved Toledo. The atmosphere was really friendly, people were super willing to speak to you, interviewers were enthusiastic, and the campus just seemed really laid back and great. I was pleasantly surprised. 🙂 Despite the fact that Cinci is ranked better, I definitely would have attended Toledo.

I'm holding acceptances now from OSU (which I LOVED as well), Toledo, and CCLCM (eek!), but decided to withdraw from Cinci.

I got my first BS at Youngstown State University and was roommates and friends with a number of the BS/MD students in the BS phase of the program. The reason they're so cliquey is because they just spent a very taxing and rigorous 2-3 years together and they already know each other and have been helping each other and hanging out with each other and everything all along!

I totally agree with you about both Cinci and Toledo. I'm really jealous about CCLCM and OSU though, you are so lucky!! Where are you leaning towards going right now? I have my OSU interview next month...any tips?

I applied UC twice but I didn't get in. I would say that UC is a great place overall. You didn't see many students probably because they were studying elsewhere due to the construction. I went to UC for undergraduate, I used to see a lot medical student studying on the main campus, which is closer to the recreation center, so they can go workout or play sport right after studying. I believe you should see a lot more students once the construction is done. I am about to apply a third time in this year and UC is on my top list.

custard--I PMed you 🙂

notarealname--I know that most of the reason I didnt see any students was because 1st years were actually in the middle of taking exams when I interviewed. I don't doubt that Cincinnati is a fantastic medical school, but it just didnt mesh with me specifically. The "fit" aspect goes along with every school, and I just don't think it was a good fit for me. It was just the only school where I didn't meet happy, excited bubbly students who wanted to sell their school to me. The only students I saw were my tour guides, and because of that, I didn't get a good sense of the student body and just saw old walls that were going to get torn down anyway. I'm sure the new building will be great. Good luck with your application!

Starlight--Thank you for clearing up, I guess I misunderstood you🙂

Anyway Ohio rocks!

hey all, i'm an ohio resident looking to apply next yr, i have a 30 mcat good ec's , but my gpa is only around a 3.0, what do u think my chances are at ohio schools??

You still got some chance but not very high. Make sure you apply DO schools too.

Hey, all! I'm an Ohio native as well, and I may get to move back after living on the East Coast for 4 years now. I applied to Case, OSU, Toledo, and Cinci. I received interviews at Case, OSU, and Toledo, and was accepted at Toledo in October 😀. I really liked it there! I was waitlisted at Case, and I withdrew my app from OSU after being accepted at Toledo. Haven't heard anything from Cinci, but I'm less interested in Cinci since it is far from my family (I'm a Clevelander). I've had some OOS interviews as well, and if I recieve acceptances from those schools as well, the choice will probably come down to fin aid. :luck: to everyone!

While we're at it-

REDS OR INDIANS?
BENGALS OR BROWNS?
POP OR SODA?
SKYLINE OR.... THERE IS NO COMPARISON

Applied:
OSU
Wright State
Cinci
NEOUCOM
Toledo

Interviewed:
Wright State
Cinci
Toledo

Accepted:
Wright State

Waitlisted:
Cinci
Toledo

I actually really liked Cinci and felt it would be a good fit. I would be grateful for any advice on getting off their waitlist/ if anyone knows how much it moves?

Good luck everyone!

I'm an OOS, but I've an interview at Toledo in Feb. I've been to Toledo to visit some family friends and I thought it was a really nice town, and beautiful campus. We'll see how my interview goes.

Good luck. Just FYI. I had an OOS interview in March... clearly worked for me.

I applied to Cinci and Case (UP and CCLCM)
I interviewed at all three programs and I've been accepted at all three (definitely not expecting this, but believe me-I am pretty pumped)

I was admitted to Cinci through an early acceptance program (ROSE program) and I'm familiar with the school since I've spent two summers doing research there. Cinci is a great place, but I got the best vibe from CCLCM (their program is a good fit for me).

Now to more important matters:

While we're at it-

REDS OR INDIANS?
BENGALS OR BROWNS?
POP OR SODA?
SKYLINE OR.... THERE IS NO COMPARISON

Well I'm a Clevelander so basically:

Indians>Reds (you'd have to be crapping yourself to admit the Reds are any good)

Browns>Bengals (thanks for being a playoff spoiler, you jerks)

POP, not Soda, or "Coke" as they say in places down south.

Skyline...I've had it once and I do admit it's good stuff. I can't really come up with anything better!

Good luck everyone:luck: Feel free to PM me if you have any questions about Cinci since I'm pretty familiar with the program.

When did you send in all your materials for Wright State? I am not hearing anything from them after I sent in my secondary.

Cinci is a very good fit for me. Their campus looks much much better than Case's (I go to Case undergrad, graduating in May), I liked their clinical training facilities, I got a very good vibe from the students there, and I clicked with my interviewer well enough for him to invite me to go check out a fixed brain with his pathology resident. I also like that they have access to addiction research, and the city (and area around campus) looks safer than Cleveland.

I don't have much information about Toledo (haven't heard back from them yet), but I go to Case, and I was very, very hesitant to even apply there, until I talked to an M1 mentor about a year ago there who assumed me that the administration did attempt to work with the students. I'm waitlisted there, atm.

Focus: Cinci was a good fit for me, and I don't really want to stay in Cleveland much more. In my experience, Case (med not undergrad) and Cinci both had responsive administration, but I am still wary of Case (their high tuition doesn't help too much - Case undergrad is more than Cinci, except M3, I think, and Case med is even more)

I liked Wright State, and it helps that my family's home is about an hour from there.

About CCLCM specifically, there's a CCLCM student in my lab. I think she enjoys her program, I haven't talked to her about it much. It sounds nice, as I like small group work, but Cleveland Clinic is a bit large, and I didn't like it much as a result (shadowed some neurologists there). There's also some sort of confusion over if CCLCM is going to associated with Columbia University, but I don't know the details. IMHO, I get the vibe that CCLCM is following the lead of alot of the Case deans/president did, i.e. rats swimming away from a sinking ship.

Just got a quick email from Toledo, saying that my application is still complete, and it is still being reviewed for an interview decision.

I'm glad to hear an update from them, even if it doesn't give me any information.

There's a girl who graduated from Case last year who's at Toledo now, and I think she said that Toledo took a long, long time in getting back to her also.

Cincinnati Native, actually doing my undergrad at UC right now...feel free to PM me with any questions about the area as I know it well....

Applied: UC, OSU, CASE

Accepted: UC, OSU, CASE

Very excited since they are all good schools

Yarthe, I got the same update email from Toledo today. It good to hear something from them.

I got that same email. It doesn't really say much, I don't know whether to be optimistic or not. Wasn't much of a status update, but oh well, at least it is not a rejection. 🙂

Anyone get that and get an interview right after? That would be nice. Good luck everyone :luck:

Hi everyone

Applied:
Case (my alma mater)
Toledo
Cincy
OSU
NEOUCOM

Interviewed and Waitlisted:
Case
Toledo
Cincy

I just got the Cincy waitlist today. I'm so angry with myself to be on all these waitlists and not have any acceptances. Oh well, keep on trying, right?

I submitted my secondary 7/23 and sent LOR's 8/20. They called pretty quick to offer an invite (8/23), but i think they had less applications to sort through back then.

I hope you hear from them soon!

Waitlisted at Toledo and WSU....gotta love that.

Waiting to hear from UC and OSU.

Toledo seems to be getting a lot of love as of late. I was impressed with how well their students do on the USMLE and the campus atmosphere. Facilities and classrooms weren't too impressive, but I liked it. However, I assumed UC was regarded as a better school. Hopefully I hear from them, but more than likely will be heading out of state.

Yayyyyy Toledo wants me! I really loved that school.

I will say, for those of you waitlisted at Toledo, it pays to keep in touch with the school. Last year, I was told (by everybody) to send lots of letters, I did just that and I managed to get pulled from the list.

I think you told me this on another thread as well, but I haven't sent the letter yet because my waitlist letter specifically said not to send anything. Do you think I should send it anyway?

Hmm, interesting. I don't recall what my waitlist letter said specifically...

Did it tell you not to send anything to update your file, or not to send any correspondence whatsoever?

I'll check on this for you and get back to you.

"Alternate candidates who are selected for admission generally do not receive acceptances before June 2008. Therefore it is not necessary to submit post-decision materials to the office of admissions."

Maybe I overreacted? It doesn't say "absolutely do not send them". I already have it written... maybe I should just send it anyway.

Give me some time. I emailed my histo prof aka the assist. dean of admissions and asked him if letters would be welcomed. We should know soon enough.

Hehe... sorry, didn't mean to sound like I was rushing you. I think my insane internal monologue is bubbling closer and closer to the surface these days. But thank you for the help!

no prob, I remember what the app process is like... I'll post when I hear back.

Yay for Ohio schools and Ohio school applicants. You guys are doing so well, congrats on all those acceptances! UofM527, don't feel bad, I am not an Ohio resident either. You don't have to be an Ohio resident to 😍 Ohio schools.

This is my first post but anyways...

I only applied to Ohio schools (UC, Wright State, Toledo, and OSU) and UofM (on a whim). I am waitlisted at OSU and UC but I have no real desire to attend either, I got into Toledo, no response from UM (typical...I don't think I am their "type"), and I haven't heard anything from Wright State. I honestly think they lost my application. I sent everything in to them in July but they never marked it as received until Sept. I've called them but they won't tell me anything about anything.

My first choice has always been Toledo. Although, I was considering OSU until I went there for my interview. It just didn't mesh with me and my interviewer seemed as though she really hated interviewing.

I did a summer program at Toledo's med school in July and loved it- I have heard nothing but great things about the school and was really impressed with the students and faculty. So I will be there this coming fall and I am very excited about it!

Wow- Mad love for toledo these days...Im not entirely sold on them but they seem extremely comparable to cinci and wsu. But I want to hold out for osu if I can, anyone know how their waitlist movement usually is?

Just thought I'd post an update in case anyone else was having the same conundrum...

I called UT today and the woman I spoke to (did not get her name) said update letters are absolutely accepted from people on the alternate list, and you can email, mail, or fax.

So I sent mine in, and hopefully the dean doesn't get back to Depakote with something different. 🙂

Yay! We're kind of awesome. 😀 I'm sure we'll all be meeting up with you guys after MS1 tests next year at Whiskey Ranch.
