So this means that the restrictions for leaving the state only for so long and everything are gone as well right?

Yes that’s right! There’s no condition you have to meet - OOS students automatically receive IS tuition after the first year

Question to Current Students:
What are good places to live if you don’t have a car? I have a bike, and I’m fine with walking. But my friend brought up a good point about being close to school vs being close to things like grocery stores, etc. Do you have any current suggestions or how you live without a car?
I lived in columbus from 2018-2019 and it's super cheap to live in victorian village if you have roommates. We rented a 3 bed house and each paid $500 a month, and could walk to the medical campus (15 minute walk). We could also walk to high street and the other fun areas and had two parking spots. It was awesome! Look on trulia for house rentals. The apartment complexes cost way more and are way less convenient. Parking on campus at OSU is a royal pain.

I just got an email that tOSU can offer me $50,000 scholarship for the first year as an outstanding applicant!!
I thought I already made a decision to my in-state, and now I don't know what to do...
With that scholarship, your tuition and fees will be almost identical ($136,000 at UIUC vs $137,000 at tOSU). I’d honestly go wherever you feel you’d be most happy. This is really the ideal situation for that.

Hey, I also received the same email, and I was not considering OSU Vet Med previously since I received an offer from my first choice...but now, I am not sure what to do either.

For those of you trying to decide between schools, considering the cost of living between places is also pretty important.

Is it reasonable to live at Columbus with a roommate or two for $500 per month?
That was my plan for living at Urbana-Champaign if I attend Illinois.
If the living cost is about the same, I may go to tOSU.

Yes. I have two roommates and pay a little over $500 a month with utilities

100%. I lived with a roommate in a 2 bed/1 bath apt with base rent of about $900, and with utilities, wifi, etc it was in the neighborhood of $500-550 per person per month. The fluctuation was mainly dependent on the electric bill (our apartment's insulation was subpar, shall we say :dead: ).

With that being said - Illinois is also a great school, you really can't go wrong here. I wish you all the best.

I also got a scholarship! THIS IS INSANE! And such a large chunk to take off of first year tuition... feeling amazingly grateful for the opportunity.

Wait. How far do you guys live from the vet med building? Can I still find a place for $500 per month within 10 min drive?

Honestly “10 minutes” can be misleading. I live 5 miles north of the vet college (off N Broadway) and it only takes me 10-13 minutes to get to and from class in the afternoon. But in the morning with traffic it easily takes me double that. I usually plan to leave at 7:30, or 7:35 at the latest to make an 8am class. Traffic can be a bear in Cbus, and I try to avoid 315 at all costs.

I am definitely not a morning person, and I don't see myself making 8 am class if the commute takes almost 30 minutes in the morning lol

Does the place where you live cost you less than $500 per month though?

The key to Columbus commuting is timing.

I’ve lived about 15 miles from school in a nice northern suburb for five years and my commute is only 20 minutes. I try to get to school about an hour before my first class. Including the occasional inclement weather or major accident, I’ve had only a handful of morning commutes that pushed past 30 minutes (my commute is all highway, 270 W to 315 S). With the right music, it goes pretty quickly. The biggest downside is that I can’t just quickly run home for something, but that’s a minor hassle for me.

Lol yeah, traffic can be miserable in the winter. Yeah, it’s a 2 bedroom apartment that I share with my sister. We pay $635 total for rent. So my half is only ~$320

Just curious. Heard that OSU closed the school and went to online classes only. How is this affecting the vet school?

The vet school does lecture capture anyway - they record every lecture for any student that may have to miss class or if you’re sick. So they’re just all going to be using it now - not sure what they’ll be doing for anatomy lab, animal labs or clinics though.

No idea what they’re doing for anatomy, but surgery labs were canceled. 4th years are still on clinics.

With all this free time on my hands, I have been going through my stuff and compiling a list of items for sale. These include both home and school items. I’ll be in Columbus until June 19th, so if you’re interested, send me a PM and I’ll send you the google sheet. I’d rather it not be available publicly. Items on it include a Littmann Classic III stethoscope, scrubs, desk, desk chair, among other things!

Has anyone heard of an IS turning down/planning to turn down their acceptance? Just wondering if the IS wait list will move much.

IS people rarely refuse the offer, but, luckily, that tends not to be what determines movement of the IS waitlist. Basically, IS people are under-accepted and OOS people are purposefully over-accepted. The school decides what acceptable IS vs. OOS ratio they want and as soon as the OOS population dips and there are seats to fill, that’s when IS waitlisters get called (up until the school reaches whatever ratio they’re looking for). Some years the class is seated 50/50 other years it’s more like 60/40 in favor of OOS. The higher you are on the IS list the better your odds of getting called. This system has backfired in recent years, but even then, there was some movement of the IS waitlist.

Could you share the link?

I can’t get the link to paste right but if you search “The Vet Students of the Class of 2024” on FB you should find it.

currently sitting at #1 on the oos waitlist just wondering if anyone knows if a lot of oos people declined their spots?? doesn’t look like I’m getting off of my in state waitlist so I’m hoping I get off this one so I can at least get in somewhere!!

It’s kind of a weird year. They’ve talked about how they aren’t sure if they are going to overshoot (or possible undershoot, though I think less likely) the class. Covid + changing the way residency works for tuition has messed up how confident they feel at predicting how it will turn out.

by overshoot do you mean accept more students than they normally do?

Hey, I just declined my OOS offer for OSU and I received a email confirmation today that they are aware of my decision, so hopefully you will be called off the wait-list.

We just set up a GroupMe for our class! If you want the link, message me 🙂

They should’ve emailed you with the new spot #
oh bummer I haven’t gotten an email today from them. 🙁 I wonder if they are just working on the instate today. I’m on the OOS waitlist. I want to call them but also don’t want to be annoying because I know they are busy.

Sounds like just IS. I’m on OOS waitlist and no email from them either 🙁
