Officially accepting my IS seat and I'm so excited to meet everyone!! 😀

I actually moved to Columbus from Chicago last March with the eventual hope of attending OSU (but also to live somewhere cheaper and not urban). I was wondering if anyone who did not attend an Ohio high school and maybe has not lived here for super long but started their first year as an IS student would be able to share their experience ensuring their IS status? I definitely haven't left the state for more than a few days total since I've been here and have been working full-time the whole time too. I was initially hoping that my 2019 tax return would do most of the heavy lifting, but now I'm starting to get nervous after looking OSU's residency information and list of required documents that my financial history doesn't look perfect (my boyfriend pays rent from his account so I pay him and I sometimes paid 2 months at a time and therefore some months none at all, we also use whoever's credit cards have better cashback bonuses quarterly), especially since it's 30k at stake. All general residency qualifications were met pretty soon after I moved here too, like vehicle registration, voter status, driver's license, etc. I was imagining the process would be quite a bit less nitpicky than when current vet students try to get IS status after their first year since I've been working and paying taxes for more than a year before my first year starts.
Any insight would be very much appreciated, although I know this is a less common situation!

For all of you OOS peeps - fear not the Ohio winter. We haven't had many harsh winters lately. Columbus doesn't get nearly the amount of snow we get in northeast Ohio and our winters have been kind of a joke in the north. I'm one of those weirdos that likes winter and absolutely loves Ohio seasons. Sorry no mountains or palm trees, but actually some really great places to hike - like Hocking Hills and the Metroparks. It's beautiful in the winter. If we do get pounded with snow - bundle up because there are so many fun snow activities. Summer in Ohio is awesome too. You can road trip to Sandusky and go to Cedar Point if you like amusement parks. If you've never been to Lake Erie - it's a must. Tons of water sports in the summer or the boozin-laid back island life of South Bass (where Put-in-Bay is) or Kelleys Island. My family has a house on Kelleys Island with kayaks, jet skiis, golf carts etc. I can't wait to meet all of you and show you how great OH-IO really is!

This is super wholesome and heart warming! THANK YOU 😍

Question for current students:
Do you frequently travel to other states, etc. for rotations during your clinical year?
the other program I’m weighing allows for lots of travel to basically any location you want (so long as it’s approved by the school or other students have gone to that location before); this is something that appeals to me and I was wondering if anyone had input about their experience at The OSU!

The number of externships you have during your 4th year depends on which CAE you decide to do. For example, the small animal CAE is able to do 3 externships in their schedule. I think mixed, equine, and food get 4 or 5. I’m doing the individualized CAE for pathology, which you can do 11 externships. However you need to have a valid reason to do the individualized CAE. With that said, I’ve been to or will be going to 5 different states for my externships. You definitely have the opportunity to travel, and almost every location will be approved if it is vet med related. However, the cost of it definitely adds up and there’s no deductions in tuition.

You know what else comes to Columbus, Ohio for the ENTIRE month of October (Sept 29-Oct 25 2020)... ALL AMERICAN QUARTER HORSE CONGRESS - the world's largest single breed horse show!!! Take a day and walk around, eat fair food, visit all the vendors and buy cool stuff, and watch some classes and see all the things Quarter horses can do. The freestyle reining is a must see.
Even if you are not a horse person, experiencing Congress could just make you one.:claps:

That sounds amazing! Sounds like Columbus is going to be a nice place to be for the next four years

Anyone else stressing already about the price of apartments?!
It definitely isn't as bad as LI like @asch97 mentioned haha but it is more expensive than the apartments at some other schools. What is everyone planning on doing? Living by yourself, spouse, roommate?

I want to live with roommates/other vet students... just so I can feel motivated by hopefully other people that are also going through the struggle... I’m just a little apprehensive about waiting until the official class FB is made to find a roommate(s)

Also does anyone know when/how we’re supposed to find out about the potentially new requirements for OOS people to gain IS tuition? I think I recall the dean mentioning things *should* be finalized by end of February?

I asked him on the phone and I remember him saying that they were supposed to meet at the end of the month and let us know- prob through email. Then I believe he said to call for an update if we don’t hear by mid March

He also told me there’s a 99% chance of it passing and how he wouldn’t have been able to tell any of us the news if there wasn’t a really good shot!

Question to Current Students:
What are good places to live if you don’t have a car? I have a bike, and I’m fine with walking. But my friend brought up a good point about being close to school vs being close to things like grocery stores, etc. Do you have any current suggestions or how you live without a car?

About housing, it doesn’t hurt to at least online search now, so when/if you do find a roommate, you have some idea of places to live! Also there may be students posting about moving out of their places when your Facebook group gets up and running.

I’ve lived near Bethel Rd all 4 years and there’s several apartment complexes and local landlords in that area. It’s about a 15-20 minute drive to school, depending exactly where you are in the area. There’s groceries, restaurants, and many other businesses in the area that you would need as well.

Anyone know when official transcripts for Fall semester are due? Or are they just all do after spring semester? Trying to look online and not having any luck so far. TIA!

If anyone knows or hears of anyone turning down their seat and wants to share that information the waitlisted posse would greatly appreciate it 🙂

I think you just have to keep in mind that they (all vets schools) over-accept the class, so it’s not as simple as one person giving up their seat = one new person gets offer.

It almost always moves, though.

Any current students on here that is interested in exotics/wildlife? Curious about student experiences at Ohio as I’m trying to weigh my school options 🙂

Hi all,

I've noticed a lot of people asking about where some good places are to live near campus. If you would like, you could search the group on Facebook called "Ohio State University Off-Campus Housing." There is also a webpage that OSU has Off-Campus and Commuter Student Services for students looking into places near campus as well. Most of these places do have CAB shuttles that have stops within these off-campus neighborhoods for easy access to and from classes. I am originally from Georgia and came here for undergrad and found that both resources were of great help when looking for places/roommates.

Piece of advice when signing with leasing companies: READ REVIEWS. I've had some pleasant and not so pleasantvexperiences when it comes to leasing companies. They can sometimes take advantage of college students when it comes to security deposits.

Any update on the oos bill?
We got an email that it’s basically pending Board of Trustee approval at the beginning of June, which the vet school anticipates that it will be approved with no issues.

June? But the email said it should most likely get approved?
