Hi -- Has anyone received any information regarding registration, books, immunizations, etc? I have an OSU e-mail address and have received some information regarding housing opportunities but, that's about it.

Thanks in advance!

No, despite Taira Crockett saying we would receive all of that information no later than two weeks after April 15th, I've only gotten housing information too.

we didn't get anything until pretty late last year, if i remember correctly (maybe july)? we were most concerned about getting season tickets for football.

I ordered my season tickets in April as for current students that's when you can order them. I believe for incoming students its June 1st-30th, so order while you can! I got something in the mail about ordering tickets on June 1st (after I had already ordered mine) so I was hoping they made a mistake and I could order two sets, unfortunately that did not happen.

No football tickets for me... 🙁 I had my dad's assistant do it as soon as it came (I was in Australia, away from basically everything) and it told her something to the effect that it they were already sold out. Fortunately dad got tickets this year and promises he won't use all of them... 😀

Yeah, they have a sale date of April 1st for current students and June 1st for new students. I heard that within hours of the ticket window being opened on June 1st tickets were sold out. The nice thing is that there are always people sending emails the week before a game to sell their tickets.

I'm not particularly worried. I figure somewhere between the tickets I get from my folks, the occassional desire to see my guy, and studying, I won't be lacking for weekend plans. I'm a bigger hoops fan anyway... 🙂

Congrats on graduation by the way😉

For anyone going to OSU next year, the financial aid awards are up on the website. If you go to www.osu.edu and go to current students, one of the options is Financial Aid status. If you click on that and type in your OSU email and password it will take you to your FA status. They haven't sent out the letters, but they should be early next week.

Hi everyone, I was just wandering what books everyone was going to buy. My big sib told me not to buy Thrall's Radiology because I wouldn't need it, but I was also wandering if anyone is choosing Dyce over Pasquini or vice versa. In addition, I was thinking that I wouldn't purchase the cell bio book bceause I have a really good book from undergrad, but does anyone have any thoughts on Dorland's or Stedman's Medical dictionaries or Bacha's or Done's Color Atlas'?

Nevermind... re-reading emails help...

I'm waiting to see what my big sib has to say, but I too am questioning the biochem book for cell bio. I have a solid biochem book from when I took the pre-req that I'm used to using. Hmmm... Maybe I'll float it by someother knowledgeable parties before I decide.

As for the dictionaries, I'm pretty sure I can "borrow indefinately" my sister's Stedman's, so I'll probably go that route. From the survey, it didn't seem like students used them alot.

Hey guys! Congrats on starting vet school! When I started school, i bought way too many books and I paid way too much money. So I wanted to share my thoughts on books so hopefully you won't be in the same situation as me.
I wanted to let you know that you will not need any books for cell bio, ethics (not sure if you have that class fall or winter), or radiology. Everything you will need to know will be taught in class. With that being said, the radiology book is excellent and will be a recommended book for many more classes and I plan on keeping mine as a reference hopefully for a long time. Also, medical dictionaries are pretty much useless mainly because you can just go online (if you have a PDA, i would highly recommend buying a PDA version only). For anatomy, I highly recommend the color atlas of the dog and cat and the dissection guide. I used both many time to study when I couldn't make it to lab the night before, and it's pretty hard to dissect w/out the guide. If you have some extra money, the Dyce book is also really good. The best part of that book is that it has all the species for the entire year and is a great reference book although not enough pictures. For pasquini, it's a great book but as you will hear in class it contains errors so be careful if you only study out of that book. For histology, make sure you buy Wheater's. It will make you life so much easier! I also bought Bacha, and to be honest I never opened it once.
There's my opinion on books. Hopefully it will be helpful to someone.

I forgot to add that there is a list of books that 2nd years are selling, and they will probably be a lot cheaper. I have already received some emails about the books I am selling back. Try getting some books from that list to save some money.

Thanks OSUVET 2010. I really appreciate all of your advice!

No problem! I'm glad it was helpful. Feel free to post any other questions...

So what did everybody order?

after talking to my big sib and looking at the survey, i ordered:
Evans & Delahunta - Guide to Dissection of the Dog, 6th ed. and
Young - Wheater's Functional Histology, 5th ed.
how bout you?

These are the books I'm getting:
Guide to the Dissection of the Dog, Evans
Textbook of Veterinary Anatomy, Dyce
Wheater's Functional Histology, Young
Veterinary Diagnostic Radiology, Thrall

What about everyone else?

I bought the bundled set of 4, the color anatomy atlas, and the other "student recommended" anatomy book. I consulted my big sib, an 2007 grad, and one of our classmates (who is currently teching at the clinic I volunteer at). Probably overkill, but I figure until I figure out how I'll study in vet school, I'd rather too much than too little.

Hi everyone, I decided to go with Evans as well, along with Dyce and Pasquini textbook's. I decided against Thrall's radiology because everyone that I talked to said that I didn't need it, and I am also purchasing Done's color atlas, along with Wheater's Histology and Dorland's medical dictionary.

Where is everyone living and does anyone have roommates?

Hi everyone -- So, I haven't received anything from OSU in awhile. Does orientation still start on 9/14 and classes on 9/19?

Thank!
KT

So I just discovered OSU's vet intranet. There was a very useful Survival Guide for first years. Did everyone else already find this or did they tell us about it?

that may or may not be the most current one -- they're supposed to be updated each year i think. they emailed that us around september or so. i know a few of the professors had changed from the one they had sent us last year..

Any thoughts on the "right" parking permit to get? It seemed as if there were alot of choices when I logged on...

Hey,
There are only a few choices for students but if you want to park close to the school (pretty much right next to it) get a "C" student pass. If you want to save some money you can get a "WC" (west campus) pass and take the bus to school but I wouldn't recommend it. The buses are always full and can run late.
The vet school lot is always full but I've never had a problem finding a place to park.
Enjoy the rest of your summer!

I would definitely get a C pass. That's the most expensive one we are eligible for, but also the least limiting and that is the pass that will allow you to park right in front of the vet school. My roommate this past year had an A pass (a faculty pass) and those are wonderful, but unfortunately I won't be able to get one of those 😉.

Thanks for the advice!

Whats the weather like in Ohio..anything like NYC or is it colder winters/hotter summers because it doesn't get the ocean effect?

Columbus weather is pretty interesting and in general can change pretty drastically from day to day. I would say that summer days are generally humid with a temp in the 80's - 90's. In the winter the temp gets down to around 0 with a few stormy days that have temps lower. This year we ended up having some bad snowstorms with extremely high winds and temps that were in the negatives (they actually ended up closing OSU for two days - the first time in over 20 years). Hope this helps!

I'm excited we are finally getting information on orientation!

Yeah, I was pleasantly surprised when I checked my mail a few minutes ago! It seemed a little like information "ish", but I'm sure more will come soon.

Is it me or did they forget to attach the Friday agenda as they said they would?

Yup, they forgot it and the RSVP form. I e-mailed Taira today but haven't heard anything. I did e-mail another person in admissions last week - April Pugh - and she gave me some information. See below...

Friday, September 14th student orientation 8:00 - 5:00 p.m.
Monday, September 17th 12-5:00 p.m. students & family orientation
Tuesday, September 18th orientation 8:00 - 5:00 p.m.

Hope this helps!

Quick questions to the incoming 1st years. In your orientation schedule, is there a time set aside to meet your big sibs? Our president had mentioned having a big/little sibs meeting during orientation, but it was not confirmed. I'm trying to plan ahead...
Thanks in advance!!

PS: Make sure you have your checkbook with you during orientation...you'll be writing LOTS of checks, and def go to the "team building" activity. It'll make your first couple days and especially anatomy lab a lot easier!

I was wondering about the weekend of orientation (15th and 16th). I know I'll have some stuff to do, but I also don't want to sit around by myself all weekend and get lonely and nervous. Should I tell my bf to come up and hang out with me or do new students end up doing stuff together for some of it? I got in the habit of leaning on my boyfriend, so if he is in Columbus it will be harder for me to be social.

After a week of not having my computer, I just got it back in time for vet school! I'll see you all tomorrow bright and early for orientation!
