I know, I keep telling myself that it can't possible be as stressful as I'm making it out to be. That being said, mine is also at 2:45 on 12/16, see you there!
 
Hey EqiSci-

I know they use standards from previous years as a rough guide. If they know you're way ahead of the curve with grades and an amazing interview, they'll let you know you're in right after your interview. By the same token, if your grades/test scores weren't so hot, and neither was your interview... they can give you the 'thanks but no thanks' before you leave that day. A lot of people end up in the middle and don't hear back for a while, until they figure out where the rest of the applicants stand.

So, I doubt all of the spots will be gone before you interview. They only make admissions decisions that are overly safe bets while still in the interview process. Any interview is going to have somewhat of a subjective component, so work it to your advantage- make them really WANT you in the class of 2013! You'll do great! 😉
 
Do we know much about the interview format they use?
 
I don't interview until Monday, but from what I have been told by others/read...it's open file, we are interviewed by 2 people at the same time in a 30 minute interview.

Anyone else?!

Thanks buckeye! I posted that question a few weeks ago and got a similar answer. It just seemed like they accepted a lot of people right away, but I guess that's not the case! Thank you for your reassurance, it makes much more sense that they only accept those way above the normal standard. I have to remember that they've been doing this forever so I'm sure they know what they're doing!! :laugh: Thanks again.

I believe there will be little, if any, behavioral type questions since they addressed those in the supplemental to cut back on interview time.
 
Does anyone know if we can bring along a family member or SO for the tour/info session? I'm just thinking it would be awesome to have some moral support while I'm trying not to puke all morning long.

Yes. There were several other interviewers who brought along someone for the orientation/tour/lunch...usually it was their mom, but I'm sure a spouse wouldn't be a problem. Good luck! 🙂

I was asked a behavioral question as well. Actually, it may have been a few. I can't really remember right now...I'm too busy bouncing off the walls.

Sorry. Had to do it. My interview was from 3:30-4 (fastest half hour of your life, for those of you who are still waiting for the interview!) and they called me at 4:15 to offer me a spot.

Anyway, all the advice I can offer anyone based on my interview is relax! I know it's hard...TRUST ME, I know. But as others have said, the interview is very conversational, and they really are just trying to get to know you and make sure you're sane. Also, know a few of the "cliche" list-type questions. I got asked both about zoonotic diseases and about career opportunities for vets. I'm sure you've all heard this too, but they know your application, so make sure you do too! They asked me about some of my jobs and extracurriculars. And, of course, I got the obligatory "tell me a little bit about yourself" and "what are your strengths and weaknesses?"/"why should we let you in over someone else?" It really was very short, though, and they didn't ask me any trick questions or anything very specific, outside of my resume.

I interviewed with Dr. Nash, who is a "retiring" small animal practitioner in the area, and a woman whose name I don't remember, but who is a radiologist at OSU.

Add another one to the "in" list! I was really impressed with everything at OSU. The facilities were awesome and so were the people.

I was interviewed by the virology department head and the lab animal director. Both were very nice and had thoroughly reviewed my file. It was very conversational, and I even said something totally wrong, but they were ok with it. Definitely know your zoonotic diseases and your application inside and out! I was asked 2 behavioral questions and a few technical questions (relating to small animal medicine) as well.

When you say behavioral questions, what exactly do you mean (animal behavior)? Can you give me an example.

I didn't actually apply to Ohio, so maybe it is a school thing, but what is with all the zoonotic disease questions? Zoonotic diseases is a very broad subject and I havent taken any classes, so how am I suppose to answer zoonotic disease questions? Is there some reason in your application that you were asked these questions?

V, my behavioral questions were things like "What do you do to relieve stress?" "What are your strengths/weaknesses?" and "What would you do if you got a C or a D on your first anatomy exam?" It's not animal behavior, it's your behavior. They want to get an idea of your personality to make sure that you'll be able to handle vet school.

Similarly, the questions about zoonotic diseases (at least as far as I've heard) were pretty broad. Some schools are more specific (check interview feedback), but my zoonotic disease question was basically "Tell me about some zoonotic diseases." I literally named 7 or 8 of them, and threw in a few fun facts that I like about some of them, and they cut me off and said something to the effect of "ok, you know what you're talking about." I think the public health stuff and the career opportunities for vets questions, stuff like that, is to make sure you've done your homework. They want to know that you've been exposed to veterinary medicine enough to know some of the issues you would face as a vet.

So no, there's nothing in my application that would specifically indicate a thing for zoonotic diseases, but it's a pretty common question for anyone applying to vet school. I found a lot of information on the AVMA website about them. I'd say that's a good place to start.

Congrats to those you you already accepted! That's awesome and must take so much stress of this whole process. Can I ask if your stats (GPA, GRE) were on the higher end or were you closer to the middle? I'm curious about the people they're already offering admission to and where I might fall. I have my interview in 2 days (OOS) and I'm starting to get really anxious.

Thank you guys who have posted after your interviews, it helps to hear people are having positive experiences.

Don't be anxious! It really isn't that scary. Just make sure to be yourself. My stats were kind of all over the board. My GPA is slightly below average (still in the middle-range), but my GRE scores are well above average. I have a few thousand hours of vet experience, and I've worked with small animal, large animal, exotics (a little), and research.

I've gotta say that the interview feedback function on SDN really helped prepare me for the interview. If you read what others have posted and try to get your thought process going, I bet you won't feel so anxious. I was asked less than 10 questions throughout the 30 minutes, and 4 of them came directly from previous questions. I'll try to post on the interview feedback tomorrow, but I've got another 2 flights to catch today...8 flights in 3 days is fun!

Also, since I got in (soooo happy about it!), I don't mind giving a general idea of my stats. I've got a 3.8+ GPA, a very competitive GRE score, 3500+ hours of small animal tech work, research, and some equine experience. I'm also a 20 year old guy 😀.

My best advice for the interview would be to just go and talk. It really is a conversation and everyone made me feel very comfortable there. Try not to be a know-it-all, because, let's face it, we don't know everything. I think if you go in there with a positive attitude and try to have some fun, then that will all be to your benefit (I know it worked for both me and Skillet).

I read in one of the interview feedback pages that there is an Ohio state university pre-vet website with sample questions that are asked in the interview. I searched the OSU CVM website but i couldnt find it anywhere.

does anyone know how to get to that link? please? Thanks!!😍
 
haelsvet; I looked for that link as well before I interviewed and couldn't find it on the website or searching through google. Sorry, I can't be of more help! 🙁 But listen to what everyone else has said because that would be my advice after interviewing as well!

My interview really felt like a Good cop, Bad cop situation. My questions were behavioral asking me to elaborate on one of the situations in my supplemental app. Then the rest of the interview seemed focused on how I went from an undergrad in computer science to veterinay medicine.

I honestly walked way from the interview feeling like I just wasted a $300 plane flight.

But I got in. So miracles do happen.
 
I never could have possibly imagined that there was another person who went from computer science to veterinary medicine. I hope I am as successful as you this year.

Also, just out of curiousity, how did you go from computer science to veterinary medicine?

It saddens me a little to compare how much money I could be making right now coding for google vs how much money in debt Im instead going to aquire over the next 4 years.

That is of course until I realize that I hate programming.

I interviewed today (12/18) and I was extremely (read: excessively) nervous. Once I got into the swing of the interview, which was indeed very conversational, things went rather smoothly. My interviewers were Drs. Brandt and Davis.

Their questions were predominately about my PhD research, how it would be applicable to veterinary medicine, why my undergraduate GPA was so atrocious (woops!) and a handful of character questions. I didn't have to name 5 types of dairy cows or anything like that.

Ughhhh I interviewed on Tuesday and thought it went ok...now have to sit and wait I guess. I just want to know where I stand now that the interview is over!!

For comparisons sake, I got accepted 2 days after my interview and my stats were quite different. 3.25 cGPA(3.5 last 45, and ~3.8 science), a 1250 GRE score, ~2000 hours small animal tech work, ~10 hours with goats, no other large animal, no research, no equine, and an interview I thought I bombed. I'm a 23 year old male OOS applicant.
 
Aww, this thread is making me soooo nervous! I interview on 1/5, and now I'm going to be constantly checking my phone for days afterward. It'll be my first interview, any suggestions would be much appreciated!

I just arrived in Ohio last night and I'm interviewing tomorrrow.
I'm just now practicing answering questions aloud with my Aunt's dog as an audience. :laugh:

Surprizingly I am more excited than nervous (for now).

So I was out shopping and my cell phone died. When I got home, I plugged it into the charger and forgot about it. A few minutes ago, I thought to check my messages, and there was a message from OSU!!! But by the time I got the message and called them back, everyone had already left the office. AHHHHHHHH!:bang::bang::bang:

Why else would they be calling you this early 🙂
 
Wow, congrats, guys! And Sambone, I'm sure it's good news...though I can understand why it's frustrating to have missed that call!

Ohio State sure isn't wasting any time letting a lot of us know.

Well, everything that was said after they told me I had a spot was a blur, but inbetween all the tears of joy I think I somehow managed to pick up something about being sent a packet of information and acceptance letter in a couple weeks... :laugh:
I think all of that stuff may be delayed right now because of the holidays.
 
I am so excited! I got a call on Tuesday but was at work so I called them back yesterday and found out I had been accepted!!!

Ya, I got a phone call 5-10 minutes after my interview telling me that I was accepted. I remember that my interviewer told me I would be getting a letter in the mail shortly. But as to date, I have received nothing. I did call the OSU admissions office to confirm my acceptance and they said it was correct 🙂
 
I actually called Ohio today to make sure I didn't have any outstanding pre-reqs preventing me from taking the Spring semester off. (also to make sure they had the right dave when they called me 🙂 )

They did tell me that the official letters we are supposed to get would take roughly 10-14 days from our decision. Apparently it sounds like the letters are coming form the professional school admissions office as opposed to the CVM. Said I should expect mine shortly after the new year.
 
Did anyone who interviewed this week hear anything yet?
