Has anyone received an invite to interview at OHSU? Also how does OHSU feel about out of state applicants not from a WICHE state (ie California)?

I talked to them this morning and they said that they havent sent out any invites yet but they might just be trying to be nice to me but they said that they will be sending out some in the next few weeks. also didnt sound to good for out of state people (I'm from Connecticut) they told me pretty much not to worry until after January if I havent heard anything

I just got a letter in the mail from OHSU today. It said that my application has gone through the initial assessment and progressed to the next phase of review. Your application is amongst a highly competitive pool, which we typically select from to participate in the interview process.

It then goes on to list last years class stats and that they consider all parts of your application. At the bottom of the page it says i:\competitive. Im assuming this is a form sheet they designate for different groups of applicants that they have sorted.

Anybody else get this?

Yeah I got that. I never noticed the i:/competitive part at the bottom of the page though, until now.

What led you to believe that it wasn't looking good for out of staters

Same letter here, waiting for interview invitation......

I got a different letter, pretty much stating that I wasn't going to get an interview at this time, but maybe later. I'm from Nevada so I'm not too surprised. So good job to those who got a "competitive" letter!

Just out of curiosity, what did it say on the bottom of the other letters?

I received an email saying I need to retake my DAT because one of my sections (QR) was below a 15. However my First DAT everything is above a 15. SO why should I have bothered sending my second DAT scores to them. Do you think they will still consider this? Can I request that they go by my first DAT scores or do they go by your most recent no matter what? Thanks

I am an Oregon resident and can say that OHSU will not consider old DAT score. They have a very strict policy when it comes to 15 and above in all sections (at least that is what the Head of addmissions at a presentation at my school said)

I got the same letter with i:/competitive. Does it mean the people got this letter will have the interview invitation soon?

They plan on taking 40-45, (can't remember the precise number the admissions dean said) from Oregon and the rest out of state.

inconvenienttooth:did it really say back burner?

i got the same letter

No, I think we had the same letter and mine said Countinuous review or something. In other words they will continue to review our apps throughout the cycle until they make a decision or as inconvenienttooth would say "back burner"

inconvenienttooth, Sorry I resoponded to a question asked to you, couldnt help it🙂

You can pretty much forget about OHSU if you're not from any of the WICHE states or an in-state applicant. I was planning to apply to this school, and after reading through their website and seeing their preference for in-state and WICHE residents, I realize that it would be a waste of money and time to apply there, since I'm a Cali resident.
The following is directly from their website:
Residency: The School of Dentistry recognizes that its primary obligation is to provide an opportunity in dental education for residents of Oregon. Selection, as far as residency is concerned, is based on the following order of priorities:

  • Oregon residency
  • Residency in the western states participating in the program of the Western Interstate Commission for Higher Education (WICHE) : Alaska, Arizona, Hawaii, Montana, New Mexico, North Dakota, and Wyoming
  • Residency in the remaining states
  • Canadians, and current F-1 visa holders from all other countries

In State: 47
WICHE: 20
Out of State: 8

8 out of 75 isnt TOO bad. NOW on the other hand, although i know these two statistics are not correlated at all, considering that they had 1 Native American, 1 Hispanic, and 0-3 African Americans (no statistics for AA, but one for "other" with 3 people), if you were an african american out of state non WICHE applicant, then I'd say you better ready that 4.0 GPA and 27 DAT of yours. But if youre an african american and had those stats... you wouldn't even be thinking about oregon, so yea.

detailed breakdown of applicants:

http://www.ohsu.edu/xd/education/sc...tive-students/dmd-program/upload/2009stat.pdf

According to the tables, they interviewed 37 OOS (non WICHE), gave 28 offers to OOS, 20 OOS declined their offer (8 enrolled). So chances are pretty good (~75%) if you are OOS and get an interview. This of course depends on those OOS who are given initial offers decline. Average GPA of OOS who got interviews was 3.8 for bcp/sci/overall and average DAT was 20 for AA/PAT/TS.

well i disagree...

i live in eugene oregon

and i have lived in 3 most populated cities of oregon

i would say at least 90% of the population is caucasian(hope this is the right term for white people which i dont really know)

when i was in high school almost all students were caucasian

not in the college because i bet there are a lot of people from other states and countries in college

if the focus of the school is wellfare of the state, the number for non-caucasian reflect the % of non-caucasian population of oregon but not the bias

btw...
does it offend calling caucasian "white people"???just trying to be careful
i have been living here for a while but i still dont know

Wow, and those 37 OOS people who got interviewed had an average of 3.8 GPAs. I think I should give up hope for an interview from them then, even though they did have the most people from WA get an interview. I am just nowhere near that GPA.... ohh well...

got the same letter, w/ i:\continuous review HD.
any idea what it means? do i still have a chance?

it might be the initials of the front desk receptionist that was working on the letter..

I got my competitive letter but then got an email later saying I need to retake my DAT. I had scored lower than a 15 in QR. Overall my DAT improved. So had I just kept my old DAT without sending my new score they might have interviewed me. I should have paid more attention to cutoffs.

for those that got a competitive letter are you guys in state or out of state? Thanks

OOS. non WICHE. No interview invite yet, though.

Wahoo!!! Just got an email telling me to set up an interview!🙂

Just got the same email last night as well at about 8 PST. Set my interview up for next monday. The guy said they interview about max 6 mon-fri except none on wednesdays. Today was their actual first day of interviews and they are booking through Dec 11th currently. I am out of state, but a WICHE applicant.

Well, congratulations to you!
If by "Monday" you mean 26th, I'll be there too. I scheduled for that day.
🙂

I am out of state, non-wiche. I am probably going to schedule for the 12th.

For those who got invited to interview, when did you guys submit your application? I have got my competitive letter but no e-mail right now.

All set up for an interview on Friday, November 20. Anyone else? (OOS, non WICHE)

I submited my AADSAS around June, but I don't think that would be a factor for getting interview, unless you submitted you AADSAS veryyy late (I mean recently). Don't worry... OHSU started sending invitation for interview recently, and you'll get one soon.
BE POSITIVE..🙂 and Good luck! 👍

I'm not familiar with Portland, and the Tri Met transportation system is not at simple as I expected...So where would be a good place to stay for the interview?? I'd love to stay in a hostel. Is anyone from Portland or has been recently with some suggestions? Thanks! 🙂

I've been to Portland once before. The Tri-met is not difficult once you're there, plus people are super helpful. On the Tri-met website you can enter your starting and ending address plus the time, and it will bring up the whole route for you, then you can just follow it. Gl!

The mass transit in Portland is great. For more information, go to http://trimet.org/

I hope this helps. Good luck on your interview.
