OK GPA, Low Mcat. Do I need a retake?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
dont retake it.
But I am sure somebody will point out scholarship money, so that might not be a bad idea to retake it.

I am not in favor of retakes in general, however, a score of 6 in any section is below the average and may be low enough to screen you out at a few schools. Your GPA, pod experience, ECs, and LORs seem fine and certainly make you competitive. There is a chance that a few schools may look past the low MCAT score, but I know a few may not. Personally, I would apply with this MCAT score but sign up to retake it sometime in november or december. You can contact schools in the meantime to explain your situation and get their input as to how a 21 MCAT will affect your admission. If some say it is not worth it to take the MCAT, cancel it. Some also might say that they will grant you an interview based on your stats, but a retake of your MCATs may grant you full acceptance (you'll be granted conditional acceptance until the new score comes in).

If you know you can do better, it may be worth it to retake. As mentioned, you may become eligible for several scholarships if you are accepted with a higher score.

Whatever you choose, I would definitely contact the admissions department of the schools you are planning to apply. Good luck to you!

You will get into every podiatry school you apply to with a 21. Do not re-take this exam unless you're trying to get into a DO program.

Hey Everyone.

I just got my MCAT results back yesterday, and I was disappointed in myself. I did much much better on the practice tests, and I just choked on test day.

Do you all think I need a retake?

Don't worry, that happens to most of us. You typically do better on the practice tests.

Go with the mark you have. You should have no problems getting interviews at all the schools.

Better than me. I got a 19 (7,5,7) and a 3.4 cum,3.0 sci. I want to retake now, but my work (>50 hrs a week) and school (>18 credits, including medical biochemistry/medical physiology) is so packed that I would not be able to effectively study and raise my score, perhaps even get lower. My plan is to simply apply in Aug and get through these classes. After this semester, I'll only by down to 16 credits and >50/hrs a week. I will start studying for my MCAT in OCT and take it in Jan. I called around and a couple schools (even top schools) stated that as long as you are not <18, and have at least a 5 in verbal, you are okay. Some said 20. Noone I called said >21. I think you are 95% safe. I'm not and thats why I'm retaking. (I'm more like 50% safe from my general understanding. Here is my problem, I have never taken a formal review prep class. Is worth it to pay 2k to only raise my score 2-3 possible points, especially if I can get in with my current 19 probably. Decisions decisions decisions!!!

As everyone else has said, you should be fine. The rest of your app looks great. Decent GPA, great ECs, LORs, etc.

Don't retake it unless you want a stab at some scholarship $$$ (even then, applying early helps out in that).

Apply this year and see how it goes. Your other stats are very good. 👍

why are you killing yourself with that schedule? You know about the whole 90 credit hour thing, right?

I agree, that is stupid.

Everyone states that med phy and med bio are so so so hard. I'm not a bio major. I did not want to encounter these classes for the first time in my prof school. hence, I decided to take them at a post-bacc so that when I encounter them in the future, it won't be that much of a shock to my system. I hope!!!
