I'm not going to do this, but if you were really overzealous and read all of robbins summer after MS1 would it do you much good at all?

Just listen to Goljan instead!!
More practical and entertaining at the same time.

Pathologic Basis of Disease is the greatest book ever written in the history of man

Of course it would do good. You will forget 90% of what you read by the end, but hey, that 10% is worth something right? Problem is it is a horribly inefficient waste of your time. By the time April comes around, the stuff you remember from what you read in the summer is down to 0.1%. Just pre-read the chapter you are going to cover when it comes up second year. It's basically the same thing, except you might remember the material when it counts.

How's about RR path? It's still a disaster as ability to recall materials drop down .1%? Damn, I hate my brain now😀

ok yeah, I would rather eat tacks than read that whole book this summer, but listening to Goljan might not be a bad idea. All I do is look through a microscope and listen to music all day anyways... and I'm pretty sick of my music haha

Just re-read your phys textbook if you really NEED to do something. it'll help you with pharm and path a lot, especially because you won't need refer as much to re-understand basic concepts. Path comes a lot easier if you know your old stuff pretty well (histo, biochem, phys).

I guess listening to Goljan would be good for the entertainment factor. I did listen to some Goljan before we started some of our sections, and most of the time I was lost-like he was speaking greek. It is MUCH higher yield and practical as a review after you have studied a certain section. I think you guys should trust in the system, study hard during second year as pre-study isn't going to help much.

You don't know a damned thing about pathology and you want to read the largest pathology text out there expecting to understand it?

Well, everyone has to start somewhere don't they?

I'm going to disagree with the masses and say that if you were to read say the first 6-7 chapters of Robbins twice during the summer as opposed to reading the whole book (which you would never get done anyway), it would be a really good foundation for all of path.

I don't know how other schools are set up, but ours taught just a lil bit of Micro first year. Then we were expected to learn it 2nd year. I think if someone really wanted to get ahead the summer between 1 and 2, I would learn Micro. It doesn't really need a teacher for explanation as the vast majority is memorization. Just memorize bugs a bit and you'll have more time on your hands 2nd year.

But that's only if you're nuts. Otherwise, get some sun.

while i do think that if someone had absolutely no idea about path then it may be better to go to a source that has every little thing explained (robbins) over goljan and all other distilled sources, i agree that it's a super waste of time to do any 2nd year stuff over the summer. but if you are just gunning to do something, i think the most high yield thing would actually be pharm because its one of those things that is just rote memorization and the more you look over it, the more you actually retain long term versus other subjects which are mostly forgettable. so if you must suck the life out of your summer, get yourself a stack of pharm cards and go through them...because from my experience it's really not as emphasized as it should be (pharm that is) and its loved by the boards...and it'll help you in clinical stuff too.
