I got my financial aid letter today, and it was like everyone elses. 8500 subsidized loans, 30,000 unsubsidized and that alternative loan.

Did anyone that received the $10,000 scholarship with the admissions letter have that show up on their financial aid letter? It didnt show up on mine, but im wondering if the scholarship showed up on other peoples financial aid letter. I did call the FA office up and the lady told me that they may not have received the info from the admissions committee yet...hmmm? 😳

I also received a financial aid award letter despite my current status of “Waitlisted”. I was curious, so I went down to the College of Medicine Admissions office and asked a few questions. They said to sign the statement and return it to financial aid. The fact that you got one of these doesn’t mean anything other than you included OU on your FAFSA. Any way, send it back so in the event we get pulled from the waitlist everything is in order. Also, I asked about movement in the class. I was told that they have had 4 people withdrawal up to this point. However, the bulk of the movement has yet to take place. Waiting sucks, but hey 4 down and 31 more to go!

I was hoping that too, but not the case. I called OU; they said all waitlisters get the FA award notice. I probably received it before you because I live in Norman, Oklahoma. Keepin on waitin!

so Ginz20 & Frogmed, what are you guys going to do for housing options if you get pull off the waitlist? what're the pros and cons of on/off campus? eventhough I visit OKC quite often, I don't know the area very well. I hope there are on campus housing available for waitlist people!look at me, i'm talking like I'm in already...!knock on wood!

well hopefully we'll all be pull off, i'm really hoping to meet everyone I talked to on SDN.

I will stay in Norman. I don't want to comute 40 min a day, but my daughter is in middle school. I'v heard very bad things about OKC public school system. Probably the cons of on campus living is area and price ($$ not a issue for you b/c you are used to paying a ton for housing). Pros - you're right on campus and close to Bricktown. Bricktown is alot of fun (Bare in mind this is coming from an okie girl).

Many OUHSC students live in the University Village apts (about $700/mo).
I lived there for about a month (got screwed over by my roommate, and chose to move). I now live in a nice 2bdrm /2ba apt. in Edmond w/ my wife and 2 boys. It's over twice the size of the UV apts, brand new and has drive up parking. Much better schools, nicer neighborhood, etc. I pay about $650, and the drive is about 20 minutes to the HSC. I don't really care about the commute though, because I only go there about once every 2-3 weeks.

Most people attend 5 days a week though for the first semester at least due to anatomy lab, as well as just getting used to the whole medical school thing. Some people still do, it just depends on your learning style, and how much gas you want to burn.


Other med students live in various areas of the city. If you don't have kids that you have to watch out for, it doesn't matter too much, but if you do, I'd advise Norman, Moore, Edmond, etc.

If I remember right, the UV management should have a match list of students that they provide you in order to assist you in your search. I remember having three different students call me that had already gotten an apt.

If you have any questions about them, post them here and I'll try my best to answer them.

Pros: Excellent mgmt., excellent maintenance, nice landscaping, proximity to school, other med students for neighbors, OUHSC network connection, gated access to parking and apts., individual keyed bedroom locks.

Cons:Bad neighborhood, apts and bedrooms are tiny, shared bathroom w/ roommate, almost no storage room, network connection is subject to OUHSC rules (bad news for you file-sharers, webcam'ers, wireless router people) parking is not convenient for many apts., my apt. had TONS of black beetles, but in fairness, I think it's because they were new last year and the spraying was taking effect., possiblity of having a dental student as a roommate Damn dental students. They grow up to be dentists who charge me 1700 bucks for a bicusp root canal and crown that took all of about 30 minutes... grrrr. Oh, no there's no med/dental student animosity...

Anyway,

All in all, if you're single, I'd live there.
If you're married, maybe.
If you have very young kids, probably not.
If you have school age kids, hell no.

Although my next door neighbors there had a son about 2 or 3 years old, and I heard there was a family of four living there as well.

Sardines in a can, that's all I can say.

I feel slightly cramped in the house my wife and I live in now, and it's just the two of us plus a cat and dog. I can't imagine 2 adults and 2 kids in an 800 sq. ft. apartment.

On an unrelated note, I'm going up to the campus today to hopefully get some questions answered about loans, health insurance, and laptops. I might see some of you there. 😛

In response to an earlier post, a lady from student services posted the dates that don't seem to match up with a start date of Aug 22nd if orientation is indeed the week before class starts. Here is the post from quite a while back:

"The dates you are required to be here starts Wednesday, August 10 for orientation which goes through Friday, August 12. The White Coat Ceremony date, time, location have not been set yet, but it will either be Friday evening, or Saturday or Sunday in the early afternoon. "

Free baby. All free. Dr. visit, lab work, testing, etc. All free.

You do still have to have private health insurance, however. (As required by OUHSC prior to starting class). You can either get your own through outside sources such as BC/BS, spouse's job coverage, or buy the school sponsored insurance through Macori (You'll get that info later if you haven't already)

As far as the FMC goes, I've seen the PA's/docs a few times in the FMC. Great bunch of people. Many teach at the med school. All very friendly and competent, As are the nurses and other support staff.

If anyone has a spouse and/or kids, keep in mind that they are not free, and that the insurance coverage, if extended to them, works just like any other insurance, with you being responsible for the deductibles, etc.

I got my license back in 1998, and the last time I flew was in 2000. I've got a hair over 100 hours. I'd love to fly more, but we just don't have the money right now. Sweet dude. Congrats. 😀 Next year is going to be a great time and more importantly I'll have someone to watch futbol with.

So, I just got back from the Kentucky Derby...complete craziness. I don't remember what the hell went on but I do remember seeing some people from Oklahoma and starting a Boomer Sooner Chant. I also saw an OSU fan, and started giving him sh$@. Crazy time, and louisville is a pretty cool city, reminds me alot of OKC, especially their downtown area. Louisville has something very similar to bricktown area.

I only sent one letter of intent and a change of address email when I was on the waitlist. I was going to cook it up a notch after May 15th but BAM! heh.

Congrats. I've never had buffalo steak, but buffalo burgers are good. Buffalos are much better to look at. If you ever get a chance, you should visit the tall grass prairies. There are plenty of buffalo there.

Ok so I'm officially done with undergraduate. I took my last final today, and now its one constant party until graduation which is Monday.

Does anyone know if we need a certain gpa requirement for the last semester? I'm a little afraid I may not get a 3.0 this semester, and dont want my admission to get revoked in the summer.
Could some of the current med students confirm that all you need to do is make a 2.0?

In case any of the entering class of 2009 hadn't heard, the white coat ceremony is scheduled for Aug. 12 @ 7:00pm at the National Cowboy and Western Heritage Museum.
(It was posted in the OU Medicine Alumni publication that just came out)

I can't seem to get used to the taste," the patient replied. I then asked to see the jelly and the woman produced a foil packet labeled "KY Jelly."

It's a big deal. Parents, family, friends, etc. In addition, there are alumni, faculty, other students, etc. in attendance. I don't remember how many seats each student gets. I think you get up to like 6 seats or something like that, but then you can request a few more if need be.

The first month is a lot of fun. They make you feel pretty important. Even after the new wears off, it's still alot better than undergrad where you're generally just another sheep in the herd.

I just went downstairs to the admissions office and got some info for all of us on the waitlist. They have had 19 spots open so far. The dean filled 17 of those spots sent out their acceptance letters last week. Currently there are 2 spots open and they expect to get more by the 15th, but the dean is waiting until all of the withdrawals are in to fill those spots. It appears that those letters will be sent out toward the end of next week. Hopefully that made sense as well as puts all of us at ease, even though I am pretty sure it didn’t and it won’t.

The receptionist became irritated and said, "You shouldn't come into a crowded office and say things like that."

I think that you just have to pass with a C average, with no grade lower than a C. Does anybody else know?

Have any of you recieved anything other than the acceptance letter and the Financial Aid reward letter? Should we be sending in official transcripts and getting our vaccinations in order? I'm sure that we will hear something soon. I can't start looking for a place to live until July!! I hope that there will be stuff available.
