Please just don't knock something that you don't understand on a public discussion board, where others utilize the resource to decide about particular schools. It's okay to say "there is significant resources, and many state they don't go to class". It's not cool to say "A big drawback to OU is that people homeschool".
Thanks for letting me vent. As you might be able to infer from this post, I get a little defensive about my school, and am quite happy being where I'm at. Hope to see many of you here next year. Work hard and you'll enjoy most every minute (except test blocks 🙂)

I really was hesitant to try homeschooling since it really goes against the grain for me, but I've noticed I've accomplished twice as much by skipping everything but gross for TB3. My grades are much more satisfying so far on this test block and I'm not passing out for the daily 2 hour nap b/c I'm so friggin exhausted from listening too long. The only thing that could be any better would be for the lectures to be videotaped. If you're still getting done what needs to be done, I don't see how this could be a 'slacker' tactic at all. Seems more like a case of working smarter, not harder. 👍 😀

You got it. The whole homeschooling thing is addictive. You try skipping a lecture or two, and then you realize,"hey, I just learned the same stuff on my own in half the time!" A caveat, however. If you find yourself getting behind, you need to honestly reevaluate whether you have the self-discipline to homeschool. Attending lecture forces you to keep up and some people readily admit that they either tried homeschooling and overly took advantage of the multitudes of freetime, or that they flat out know their own personality or learning style well enough to recognize that the route wasn't for them.

Each person needs something different to learn their best, and if I could pass on a piece of advice to those interviewing now, it would be to understand that, and make sure that the programs you are trying to get in, match your style. Two years ago, I would have ranked facilities, cost, lecturers, research $$$, etc. as most important, but now I can say that while those are important, if I had to attend lecture everyday, my family life would suffer greatly, (as would my gas bill driving 50 miles RT everyday), I wouldn't have any free time, and I would probably be so burned out, I'd hate everything about medicine, thus those other things that I thought were important simply wouldn't matter.

Is there a 2009 class roster somewhere, available to those of us still on the outside looking in? Or would someone be willing to let me know if a particular student is attending?

There are some schools that do that. I know a guy at one who studies during the day (8am-5pm) then watches the lectures on his laptop in the evenings and has nights free.

a few osteopathic schools do it. dmu, umdnj, wvsom and comp all have mp3s for the lectures available to students online. pretty cool, imo.

Just so everyone is clear, we record and upload mp3s of all the lectures. The administration does not allow videotaping citing "copyright" reasons, butg that doesn't stop us from asking. *shrug*

and waitlisted.. dec 6th interviewer, no clue really why the intervirew wasn't bad i was initiating most of the talk they just came up with questions on the fly. what a crappy winter break its gonna be, any advice on how to get off this thing? is a letter of intent gonna really matter?

I don't think there is one you can access - feel free to ask about any individuals (or pm me if you don't want to post it on the board)

sorry, go bronchos 🙁 very weird since your interview went well, and you interviewed early. the letter of intent can't hurt, but it'd probably be useful to know how many people they usually take off the waitlist.

i might find out today what my status is. if anything mailed on dec. 8 then it should definitely, definitely be to oregon by today at the latest.

I'm sorry you are stuck here with me. At least we aren't alone? Eh...

I know why I'm waitlisted- it is b/c my interview did not go well. I agree on the crappiness of the winter break.

As a word of encouragement, my MS-II friend mentioned that one of his classmates was deferred. He eventually called up to find out where he stood on the list and was 40 out of 42. As I said, this is one of his classmates. So apparently, we are not dead in the water yet. I would like to put a smiley here, but none fit.

so how are they ranking us on this waitlist? So your saying lots of movement off it hopefully? Are they going to consider us at each admissions meeting or all at the end?

I don't know the mechanics of the wait list but I would like to offer you some encouragement.

A good friend of mine is currently an MS 3 here at OU. She was waitlisted and didn't get accepted until around April, if I remember correctly. Also, I can't remember now where I heard this, but I'm fairly sure that OU usually ends up taking at least half of those that get deferred.

I know that doesn't sound encouraging right now, particularly since it's a long way from May 15th. Just keep in mind that deferred is just deferred, not rejected, and even if you don't get in this time around it's not the end of the world.

It took me two tries to get in, and I firmly believe that if you want to be a doctor you will get in.

nothing today here in portland. so, i know it did not mail dec. 8. now i'm wondering if i should bother to contact the admissions office, or if i should just wait a little longer. i find it weird that people who interviewed after me had stuff mailed before me.

I was talking to one of my classmates today, and he said that he knows of more than one person in our class that got accepted off the waitlist the day before classes started. I know waiting that long would suck like a Hoover, but don't lose hope!

HAHAHAHA oh for some reason that is just so funny.

I don't know about everyone else, but I recognize not getting into med school this year wouldn't mean the end of the world, but it would mean a big pain in the a@@... it means re-taking MCAT, re-interviewing :scared: , actually having to study for classes... getting accepted off the bat means not having to do those things. Therefore, that is better. No me gusta MCAT/interviews. Me encanta 😴
Here's to makin' off the deferment list!

😕 hmmm...no word in missouri. i am pretty sure everything wasnt mailed on the 8th cuz i definitely definitely should have gotten it by now. i am just hoping that all of the acceptances werent mailed on the 8th since it seems that everyone who heard earlier was accepted and everyone who has heard later was deferred. at least no one on here has been rejected...cheers to that...i expect to hear by the weekend but as time passes i am getting more and more nervous about what lies in my mailbox. thanks to all the med students for trying to keep the spirits up and offering helpful info....

yea studyin next semester stinks.. i was so plannin to just say screw it, and i gotta get a real job in the year off =/, and im gonna have to waste alot more money applying to like 20 schools, maybe those extra spots will get us all of the deferment list 😀

No word yet in OK, and I had a Dec. 6th interview. Our mail service is pretty spotty as my parents live on a rural route. Hopefully, I'll hear something soon.

I heard from one of the current MS-IIs that EVERYONE who was waitlisted for the class of 2008 was eventually accepted.

I think I'd rather get rejected and know, than waitlisted and wonder. I feel for ya'll. Don't lose faith!

I am officially done with my first semester of medical school - very good feeling 😀

only 9 more test blocks to go...

I felt the same way for a minute... then I realized that a lot of waitlistees get accepted... so, I think I'd rather be tortured a little longer this year and get in eventually (even if it is in August- yuck). Besides, who doesn't 😍 a little bit of torture? It's that whole "what doesn't kil you" bit.

everyone here seems to be using deferment and waitlist interchangeably. but they are two different things. the way ou works, everyone who is defered is put into the pool with the interviewees who have not yet interviewed. after everyone has been interviewed the defered applicants and the non-decision applicants are reranked. the top people get accepted the next to top people get waitlisted and the bottom get rejected. so a deferal now, does not necessarily mean that you will end up on the waitlist, you could get outright accepted in feb or march and not have to go through the waitlist process.

i was wondering about that. thanks for the clarification. still no news for me today, so maybe i'm on the unofficial deferral list.

Well, I got a refusal, no deferment. Dissapointing, 28 MCAT, 3.8 GPA, and I thought the interview went great, makes me wonder what more I'm supposed to do. Retake the MCAT when I'm already at the average accepted score?

I know how you feel Barker. A straight up rejection is a kick in the nuts. If your applying again next year make sure you go to the reapplication seminar in March.

sorry, bobbarker. 🙁 i can't imagine what was wrong, either. now i'm thinking i can only be getting bad news because the people who weren't notified super soon were all in the non-accepted category.

To those still waiting for an interview, I got my invite this morning for a Feb 2 interview. May be the last day. I interviewed on the last day last year. Anyone joining me on the 2nd?

sorry to hear that, definitely go the workshop in march i think the admissions committee will be their so ask them exactly what went wrong, hopefully your interviewers will be their too. Im gonna do the same if i dont get in. Bob i thought my interview was great too, this process is really turning out random

I think you guys are reading too much into when you receive your mail and whether or not you got in. It sounds pretty random, really. One guy found out he was deferred last week, so they obviously aren't notifying the deferred people last. It's natural to think the worst, but don't. It probably means nothing. They could be mailing out things alphabetically, by state, by gender, by major..who knows??

Frist of all, I'm sorry about your refusal.

Second, I have the same MCAT score, and if I don't get in, I plan on retaking it to get it to at least a 30. Yeah, I know... all that work just for two more points? Eh..

Third, you could many find out a hidden heritage that will give your minority status? :meanie:

Anyone else having a problem with all of their friends/family/significant others not comprehending what a deferment means? I told my friends that I was deferred and explained that it meant the medical school didn't know what to do with me yet... but they are all saying things like "That's okay, they don't deserve you" and "Try again next year". I'm like, did you miss that this means I'm not out yet? Did you not catch the part where a lot of deferred people eventually get in? Or get waitlisted & then get in? It isn't that difficult of a concept. It makes me feel even worse about being deferred since they are saying that, even though I know it isn't over yet. Silly non-pre-meds....

The farther you get down this winding road we call the practice of medicine, the more you realize it's not quite how most people imagine it.

Good luck RachelD. Hopefully us reapplicants will get more love from OU this year. 👍

Woohoo - I got an interview (found out Friday) for January 27th. Hope to see some of you there!

As news spreads throughout my workplace, everybody is asking if my acceptance means I'll be leaving. Yeah, I don't think 50+ hours a week on duty and med school are synonomous...

lol, people have asked me that, too. i don't think they get that medical school is not something you can do at night while holding down a fulltime job. when are you going to officially tell your boss? i have not done that one yet and am thinking maybe two months would be considerate? she's got to know i'm going because of the rumor mill anyway.

As much as I want to just not show up one day, I'm probably looking at about a month or so. I don't want to say I'm hard to replace or anything, but there will be some time involved 😀 The good news is that a few people were already slated to leave, so there are already replacements "hired". They just won't be replacing who they think they are! I pretty much work in a big sewing circle, so it is absolutely impossible to keep anything from spreading like wildfire; not that I tried too hard. So I'm sure it has reached the top...

I won't be crossing the same river, but I still don't want to burn any bridges...

But I have put out on the rumor airwaves that I'm accepting:
1. Bids on student season tickets
2. List of people that deserve vicarious F yous
3. Cash donations in return for free Viagra scripts when the time comes

This had to be one of the toughest weeks I've ever had to live through. Many of us who interviewed 11/30 and the following week didn't hear anything when the mail was sent out on 12/8. I thought they would probably wait until the following Thursday (12/15) to send out mail again, but I will admit my hopes were flagging. Couldn't eat, couldn't sleep, refused to get out of bed each morning until the mail came - by this morning I was just numb.

Which is why, about half an hour ago, I thought the red in the mailbox was a Christmas card - which I thought was cruel. It wasn't. I was accepted and selected as a Student Scholar. I can't decide whether to laugh or cry - actually, a little of both. I'd better not do the Happy Dance too much - as the leading candidate for oldest member of the Class of 2010, it would be bad form to fall and break a hip, wouldn't it?

So... if you're out-of-state, I bet the 12/15 mailing will be to you by Monday. GLP and Mr. Freeze - I'm glad we're going to be classmates - hope you don't mind having the old guy in your mod if it works out that way! Good luck to *everyone* - you've all been a great support and a lifeline. Jwax - I bet good news will be coming. Amxcvbcv and everyone from the Class of 2009 - you guys are the best - you made me want to come to your school so bad!!!

Good Lord, I'm a medical student. The world just changed colors (to crimson - forever). Thanks, everyone.

Not even 3 days after I got the red one, my wife said, "Hey there is a little envelope from OU in the dining room. I accidently opened it, but I didn't read the letter that was in it." 😱 I thought, Oh **** it was all a mistake, I knew they came out too fast, now they are mailing out all the retraction letters saying sorry we have a new person in admissions that accidentally sent your acceptance, we really didn't want you, just kidding, have a nice life...

But it was just some form they left out of the original packet. :barf:
