This had to be one of the toughest weeks I've ever had to live through. Many of us who interviewed 11/30 and the following week didn't hear anything when the mail was sent out on 12/8. I thought they would probably wait until the following Thursday (12/15) to send out mail again, but I will admit my hopes were flagging. Couldn't eat, couldn't sleep, refused to get out of bed each morning until the mail came - by this morning I was just numb.

Which is why, about half an hour ago, I thought the red in the mailbox was a Christmas card - which I thought was cruel. It wasn't. I was accepted and selected as a Student Scholar. I can't decide whether to laugh or cry - actually, a little of both. I'd better not do the Happy Dance too much - as the leading candidate for oldest member of the Class of 2010, it would be bad form to fall and break a hip, wouldn't it?

So... if you're out-of-state, I bet the 12/15 mailing will be to you by Monday. GLP and Mr. Freeze - I'm glad we're going to be classmates - hope you don't mind having the old guy in your mod if it works out that way! Good luck to *everyone* - you've all been a great support and a lifeline. Jwax - I bet good news will be coming. Amxcvbcv and everyone from the Class of 2009 - you guys are the best - you made me want to come to your school so bad!!!

Good Lord, I'm a medical student. The world just changed colors (to crimson - forever). Thanks, everyone.

For the first time:
The University of Oklahoma College of Medicine
Class of 2010

So, just curious, are you the person that asked a question at the financial aid portion of the interview lunch about potential difficulties in getting subsidized and unsubsidized loans after your expected family contribution is calculated when you're the breadwinner?

That was me, although I've given up trying to look like a perfect candidate and have grown back much of my mustache and goatee 😳 . Are you the gentleman who helped me with my question? If so, you guys did such an outstanding job of helping us candidates... after talking with you all in person, I was 100% sold on OU. Everyone I talked to was genuinely happy to be at OU.

Just wanted to say congrats to you, Non-trad. Hopefully I will still manage to get in anyways. Who knows how long it will be 'til I find out. I could be waitlisted after being deferred.... seems like there is still a long road ahead. Good luck to everyone who got their interview invites 🙂

wait after feb 19th, the ppl that are deferred arent automatically put on waitlist? are some gonna be declined?

Thanks, Jwax. Remember, this entire process - from prereqs to the MCAT to the admissions process to medical school to residency - it's not a sprint, it's a marathon. It's the people who keeping moving ahead no matter the setbacks who manage to finish. Getting accepted is terrific and another big hurdle - but it's only a brief rest stop on this long journey. It's gonna be a long time before the game is over for this year, and I think you have excellent chances. My fingers are crossed for everyone on the OU 2010 SDN thread, because all of you would be awesome classmates!

According to what someone else has posted and what I have heard from other sources, after the feb 19th meeting, they will accept some, reject some, and waitlist others. The deferred crowd is basically people who have done everything they can to try and get in, and they (we) just have to sit and twiddle our thumbs while they decide what to do with us. I think the only left to do is to send out this semester's transcripts. Our fate is completely undetermined at this point.

As a side note, I prefer sprinting to long-distance running... but I'll run the marathon if they make me.

Yes, that was me. I'm glad you had a good interview experience, and congratulations on your acceptance. I think you'll really enjoy being a med student here.

yeah, ohsu would be great, but they haven't even offered me an interview yet. i'm definitely putting a deposit down -- i really did like the school when i was there. 😀

LOL! Congratulations, midwest!! I called my mom about the same time I was opening the big red envelope - I was already laughing, crying, and blowing snot and was totally unintelligible. 😛
Dear OUCOM: Can we put everyone from SDN who already knows each other in the same mod? Can we? Pretty please?
Hehehe...

See, everyone that endured a little stress by having to wait got scholarships! Congrats all!

thanks guys and gals! you all are the greatest....even my miserable hangover cant get me down today! haa.

that would be so cool! hey, if it's alphabetical, i'm a t. 🙂

midwest, you earned that hangover!

Congrats midwest! It's great to see you so excited about coming - you're going to love it here 👍

Congrats all. And here you guys had yourselves convinced that since it was taking so long, you were going to get a rejection, when what you really got was a scholarship! I guess that made the extra wait worth it!

Congrats all!!!! Hope to see many of your smiling faces next fall (well... you'll be smiling until first test block... *EVIL LAUGH*).

Seriously though, GOOD JOB guys!! Those of you that were deferred, your chances are still EXCELLENT-- despite the fine opportunities offered by our truly excellent school, many who have been accepted will choose to pay $20,000 more a year to go to some fancy-pants private school where they'll get less patient contact and an anatomy professor who DIDN'T write the book on it. Never fear, their loss is your gain 🙂 Chin up, now is not the time to worry.

You know, I somehow managed to get into a mod without a SINGLE person I knew from SDN. That first day I was a little bummed about it, but you should know that in less than a week you'll get to know and love your mod-mates, even those who are so unenlightened as to not waste all their time on SDN 😉

Happy Holidays!!

EDIT: I meant less than a week from when orientation starts. You don't have mods yet 🙂

it did make the wait worth it, and i know that i've been officially exposed as the totally neurotic person that i am.

Isn't that the truth? I took my signed paperwork and deposit to the UPS place tonight because I didn't trust the mail service at work and I didn't trust the dropbox, either. I must have told that poor man six times, "you CANNOT lose this. This MUST be to the Health Sciences Center in Oklahoma City tomorrow. This is VERY IMPORTANT." He probably thought my hospital had some urgent communication to make with the College of Medicine. Ah, no, it's *my* deposit, and of course, it's all about me lately.

What a great day. I'm on end-of-year vacation since last week, but I had to go in today for a meeting. My boss was nearly in tears when she read my admission letter. My co-workers had a beautiful card, and they've put up with me for two years of premed. One of our medical directors, a terrific physician who wrote me a generous letter, saw me in the corridor and gave me a bear hug big enough to pick me up off my feet (patients probably thought that my diagnosis was "benign"). I felt like a rock star all day and got very little work done. When I think of the dozens of people who have helped me, encouraged me, and carried me through this whole thing on days I couldn't walk - well, I've never been so overwhelmed with gratitude and, (I hope), humility. So many people who are expecting my very best - it's a little scary. 😳

So, obviously you work in a hospital, but what kind of work do you do? If I don't get in this year, then I think a job in the medical field would be a smart move. Hey, to the person mentioning that there are lots of people who get accepted to OU but choose to go elsewhere.... don't give them any ideas that they ought to stick w/OU! I'm banking on the super successful pre-meds going to the private schools.

I'm betting that you'll get into OU this year with no prob, Jwax - I really liked WhoisJohnGalt's encouraging post! I've got my fingers crossed that you'll get a decision early.

I'm kind of an unusual pre-med - although I try to follow the job trends around the "house". Radiology techs are commanding big-time bucks these days - the shortage is awful. But - I'm actually a Certified Public Accountant. I got out of regular accounting years ago - I work as an in-house consultant - whenever the hospital wants to buy something or build something or look at a particular group of patients, I evaluate the project and do financial analyses and reports. So, I get to work with physicians, nurse managers, and administrators - it's a fascinating job and it gave me the opportunity to see a lot of good patient care - the only thing I want to do more (very much more) is medicine. My boss is an RN/MBA and she saw long ago that I had a lot more passion for the patients than for the numbers.

lol, i put mine in the mail yesterday, just regular snail mail, and now i'm a bit worried. i might just follow up next week to make sure it's received. 🙂 overall, i'm a big fan of regular mail -- we mail all our checks at work through regular mail, and the only real glitches are with horrible things like rural routes. man, those are bad.

i guess i also need to follow up and make sure my english substitution was okay. i had to do that petition thing and send in all this info about a writing intensive course that i took that wasn't in the english department. they didn't mention it in my acceptance letter, so maybe it's okay. 😕 i really would prefer not to take an english course next quarter.

I wouldn't worry about it. I've never heard of anyone having to do that. I had a substitution for something or other and never heard anything about it. If you're in, I'm pretty sure everything is set to go, but I guess it couldn't hurt to double check if you're concerned.

The postman finally made it out to Arizona. Accepted with a scholarship. I'm seeing red in my future.

The 3rd English req. sucks. I had to take a creative writing class the spring before school started as acceptances are conditional on meeting requirements prior to matriculation. The worst part was that I had graduated in the fall. Oh, well. One of many of hoops to jump through enroute to the end zone.

congrats franky - see you in the fall! 👍

regarding the english reqs, you should consider doing one of the english clep tests - i'm pretty sure that was the only way i had enough.

i looked at that as a possibility if one of my non-english courses wasn't substituted, and it seems like you can only use clep or ap if you take another course after that. so, if you took a clep class as a freshman and then took two more english classes, you'd be set, but you couldn't take two mid and upper level courses and then take a clep. if any freshmen are out here reading this, take note.

ou is the only school i've come across that requires 3 english courses. hopefully, dr. t. is right, and the substitute went through. otherwise, i'll be taking women's lyrics & lyricism! 🙂

congrats, franky!!

I think I took my clep between the other 2 english classes - apparently that works, too 🙂

cool! hmm, i wonder if i could have let it slide by taking it last. yeah, i've got a grad degree and all, but i'm taking a clep test for freshman comp. i guess it'd be reallly embarrassing if i failed. 😀

congrats! i had AP credit and then took two writing intensive courses that werent in the english dept. i sent a petition in. i figure if they accepted me that should be enough. i cant believe i went through all of college without taking an actual english class...what a joke

Franky, you got in!! Way cool!! Hey, sincere congratulations. I'd been thinking about you. Sorry the mail to Arizona was so slow over the Christmas season. I bet the last couple of days have been rough, eh? Terrific news!

Exlawgrrl, my last English course was "Intermediate Technical Writing and Professional Report Writing." Perhaps they decided that you'd had just a tad bit of writing practice in law school, no?

umm, that sounds like a fascinating course. too bad i missed out on that one. 😉 you know, the weird thing is that you don't do much writing in law school. it's silly because lawyers write -- i mean, that's what they do on a daily basis at work. but, no, we had to take a pass/fail research and writing course and then a writing seminar, which was my substitution class. hmm, maybe that's why lawyers are such dreadful writers. 🙂

If a recall, a literature class counts as an English course. At least I belive that's what I did. Maybe you should look into that. If not, I had a friend who was missing a course and just called them. I don't remember who she talked to, but they just looked at her transcript and sort of "found" a course to count as English.

Of course, my friend was also a grade school teacher, and maybe they felt that was enough for a credit!

Even if you have to end up taking an English course next semester, it's a nice problem to have!! 🙂

when i returned to school to do my post-bacc, i went to meet with dotty shaw regarding the three english class requirement. basically in college i took one class in the english dept., one freshman writing seminar in the education dept., and one literature class in the environmental studies dept. i wasnt too concerned about the writing seminar but was worried they might not count the environmental studies class. so i took the syllabus and had everything ok'd by dotty shaw and nancy hall. of course i asked for a copy in writing which i never got, so i will probably run it by them again this summer to make sure there are no hangups. moral of the story, i think as long as it was a lit or writing class the will be cool with it.

I thought this would be good to share with my "SDN friends", since everyone else I share it with is going to be like, "Ewww!!!" It is not med school related, but it was neat. I went to shadow an ER doc that I have been following around since June. We had a patient with a huge abscess. For some reason, the PA decided it would be good for me to help out (even though it might be kind of illegal since shadows aren't actually supposed to touch patients...). So I assisted in the I & D (incision and drain?). I squeezed out pus. It was awesome. It hurt the patient like an SOB, which, in a way, is a milestone. All doctors hurt their patients in an effort to treat them (not all the time, but sometimes), so I've gotten my first "do the patient harm to make them better" out of the way. It was pretty freakin' niffty, except that the smell of pus is probably the worst ever. Just thought I'd throw that out there. Merry Christmas, fellow wannabes.

I'm sure I will. And, it was more like a gyser (sp??) erupting than an oozing. :meanie: It was truly lovely. If you're a wannabe ER doc.
