That's really true (and annoying!) about our picnic food. It's not our fault their college is too lame to feed them!! Maybe if they worked half as hard as we did, they'd get free food too...
While we're at it, you guys are going to have them in two classes (embryo and histo). Note the rapt attention they pay to every word the professor says... while the med students are sleeping. This happens because these blow-off courses are the HARDEST CLASSES THEY HAVE... remember that.
Try to supress the pissed-off feelings you're likely to have when you come back from break after two hrs of biochem only to find your seat's have been commandeered by them. They telecast the lecture upstairs to another room for them, but that doesn't stop the infiltration in the least.
At least they also telecast it to the mods, so you can retreat there if it suits you better.
Actually, I think part of the animosity stems from the fact that relatively few people go to medical school with lifestyle as their #1 concern. They know they're likely going to spend hell in residency only to be followed by a job with frequent call, high malpractice, etc. Why? A decent paycheck can't be the only reason, otherwise there's a lot easier ways to make money. There's a nobleness that's attractive, as well. Medicine has always been an altruistic specialty, the money just helps attract the best and brightest.
On the other hand, I think alot of med students view the dental profession and the students that inhabit the bldg across campus as individuals that chose the easy path. After all, most honest dental students will tell you that they chose the profession for one of two reasons. A: Daddy's a dentist, and wants them to join the practice, and carry on the family deal. Or B:They like the idea of a relatively simple cushy job making 150-200k a year, private practice environment, being their own boss, with extremely low malpractice rates, 8-5p, 40 hr work week, little or no call, etc. I
I doubt you'll find someone with a straight face telling you they actually enjoy scrounging around in nasty mouths all day long. Whereas, even docs who do OB, colorectal surg, etc., that some of us find repulsive, obviously enjoy an aspect of the work, or they would have picked a different residency.
So does it make the med students snotty? Well, honestly, maybe a little, but the feeling is mutual. Many med students tend to respect people who work hard for something noble, and look down on those who take the easy road. While 95% of the population would think the dental guys work hard by very nature of attending a professional school, med students see them how they are on campus, and then have their irritations rationalized when they have a 20 minute root canal that costs 1000 bucks.
It's the difference in the inherent personalities that conflict, and believe me, it shows.
