Nothing fancy?? That totally rocks!! I took my Mom down to the city today to see the new house and took some pictures on campus. I was just thinking about making some wallpaper... you beat me to the punch and did a FANTASTIC job.

That wallpaper is going on my PC at work tomorrow!
Thanks. I'd like to have yours too when they're done if you don't mind. More is better since I get sick of looking at the same desktop everyday.

That photo I used was one I took a two months ago and I had to airbrush out some toilet paper from one of the trees and my rearview mirror was also somehow in the pic, I'm not a photographer but with these new digital cams even a doofus like me can take cool pics.

I'm hoping to schedule a campus tour soon so I can show everything to my wife and oldest son...plus I'm dying to get out there again. Anyone who wants to is welcome to join us.
🙂

Hey guys...I am dropping my OU acceptance tomorrow. So hopefully that opens up a spot for one of you guys waiting on here. Good Luck!!!

Hey- I wanted to know if anyone had heard about any waitlist movement recently. What about in-state versus OOS movement?

It's good to hear that there are a bunch of Mac users out there. Does anyone know if OUHSC maintains an official iCal for the Academic Calendar to which we may subscribe?

From the Hippocrates website:

Calendar Downloads
Class schedules are available in the .csv (comma separated value) format for merging with your personal Microsoft Outlook desktop, PDA's and other personal information management systems. Also, Palm .dba files are available for direct import into Palm Desktop apps.

So unless iCal's support csv's (which, not being a Mac user, I have no idea), it doesn't look like it 🙁

Congrats on getting in to your other school. Unfortunately, you were out of state so that won't help (me anyways) 🙂. Good luck!!!

My mistake. For some reason, I thought you were in-state for Missouri. Thanks for the clarification.

I wonder if Zarqawi is enjoying those virgins yet, or if it's one of those "Oh crap." moments

I just had a lovely morning at the dentist's getting several years' worth of neglected issues resolved before I lose my dental insurance. What do you current students do about dental? Do you just pay out of pocket? Can you get work done at the College of Dentistry - and is that a good idea?

I did the same thing last year, unfortunately w/o dental insurance. Cost me about 10 grand to get fillings, root canals, wisdom teeth extracted, and braces, but it's all done, and I can't wait for the braces to come off.

As far as the dental students, I've heard you can get cheaper work done, but it's a long wait, and I didn't really want a bunch of students poking around on me.

Also, there's a not-so-hidden animosity between the medical and dental students on campus. Not sure why, maybe tradition, maybe something about the clone look of gaggles of 6 foot tall skinny white guys w/ big smiles, trotting around w/ their matching little scrubs and rather empty looking backpacks, while the med students tend to be the more diverse, ragged, tired looking people hauling around their massive loads of books from nook to nook. That and they tend to show up like ants at our gettogethers and steal our picnic food. 😀

I'm thinking about maybe getting a dental discount plan -- they cost around $120/year and have already agreed upon rates with local dentists so you save 20 to 50%. Individual dental coverage sucks -- they have things like 24 month exclusions for fillings. I can see crowns, but fillings?! One thing I have heard is that dentists are pretty willing to work with people and set up payment plans, so that's an option.

You know, this is one reason why I'm content borrowing more money -- if I have a dental emergency, I want to be able to fix it instead of being in pain. My one nagging question is whether I could elect cobra just for dental and not medical.

No COBRA on dental to the best of my knowledge - dental's not covered by the law. I wish I could COBRA my long-term disability coverage, but you can't do that one, either. Maybe Amxcvbcv could look into a disability policy while they're looking at health insurance. Some schools do offer disability at group rates although it's a 100% student-paid thing. I know I'm an old fart (not the oldest in the Class of 2010, though - I'm the second oldest - which makes me happy for some neurotic reason) but I worry some about becoming permanently disabled for whatever reason while I'm in school. I've worked long enough to be eligible for a decent social security check, but I'd hate to have to live on just that long-term.

I have a new dentist who is really nice. My wife called him at home a few months ago at 11pm on a Friday night. His # was listed in the phonebook for emergencies (very rare). I was laying on the couch in agony from an abscessed wisdom tooth, plus vomitting over and over cuz I'd practically overdosed on Exedrin trying to stop the pain. :barf: The dentist called me in a prescription without even meeting me and then scheduled me in first thing Monday to have it removed. I have no dental insurance so he let me pay it off over two months just from me promising to come back and pay the rest. No credit check, no hassle...just a really nice guy and good dentist. 🙂

My wife has used him since then, and I'm about to get some more work done.

Good professionals are so rare these days.

I'm always confused about disability insurance for students. With our disability policies, you have to be actively working to qualify, and your payouts are based on your current salary. How do they do it for students? I can see why it'd be good, though, because there's nothing worse than being permanently disabled and stuck with huge loans.

I might just be asking you for that guy's name. 🙂 I've never had a bad dentist, but I've hard some horror stories.

I have no idea how they do it for students - maybe we could get Amxcvbcv interested to find out! Mine works the same way - I think it replaces 65% of my salary for permanent and total disability. If you did become permanently and totally disabled, though, your Staffords can be put into permanent deferment - which is why I'm borrowing and not spending my 401(k) money - it's virtually impossible for anyone to ever touch that 401(k) no matter what happens to me - I'd rather pay the interest on loans than lose that secure nest egg.

Not sure what the deal is, but I saw an updated sheet on our computer requirements that says Apple platform is not supported.

I'm going to call tomorrow and try to find out some details. I'd really prefer the macbook if it'll work on the campus network. I can't imagine why it wouldn't.

It should work on the campus network. The only problem I can foresee is that throughout the year there will be a few programs that will be passed around on CD to put on your computer for studying purposes, and as I recall, they didn't have a Mac version. HOWEVER, they will all be loaded onto your mod computer, which it will not be inconvenient to use no more often than you'll need those programs. So it's only a problem if you don't expect to spend any time in your mod, which, let's face it, would be lame anyway 😉

They must have changed that link very recently, because the previous one stated how to purchase Macs online. I also know for a fact that the dean of admissions for the dental school uses a mac and said that most people at the dental school use them. I don't know why they would be supported for the dental school and not the medical school. They surely share infrastructure.

I did my MPH at OU and I do have a powerbook, you'll be fine 😉

When I interviewed there were some walking through the lobby as we gaggled back to the union, and most of our tour guides (prolly on here but I can't reconcile faces with names with SDN anonymity) engaged in loud discourse over their attire and general worthlessness, making sure to capture their attention...you guys rock.

Reminded me of the chow hall at a base I was stationed at that had all four services training there, with all the associated rhetoric. Only you might have to go outside and put your money where your mouth was. Dental students prolly wouldn't want to wrinkle their scrubs...

That's really true (and annoying!) about our picnic food. It's not our fault their college is too lame to feed them!! Maybe if they worked half as hard as we did, they'd get free food too...

While we're at it, you guys are going to have them in two classes (embryo and histo). Note the rapt attention they pay to every word the professor says... while the med students are sleeping. This happens because these blow-off courses are the HARDEST CLASSES THEY HAVE... remember that.

I talked with someone in their IT dept and although he sounded less than 100% positive it sounds like we can use Macs. He also mentioned that all the dental ppl use Macs. So I'm going with the macs.

Did anyone else notice on that mentoring info sheet they posted it says AS A NEW MEDICAL STUDENT, YOU WILL BE ASSIGNED A MENTOR FROM THE CLASS OF 2010. ??? I assume they meant to say from the class of 2009, right?

And I like that Dinner with the Class of 2009 ... sounds great to have you big dogs from 2009 buying my food! 😀

Try to supress the pissed-off feelings you're likely to have when you come back from break after two hrs of biochem only to find your seat's have been commandeered by them. They telecast the lecture upstairs to another room for them, but that doesn't stop the infiltration in the least.
At least they also telecast it to the mods, so you can retreat there if it suits you better.

Actually, I think part of the animosity stems from the fact that relatively few people go to medical school with lifestyle as their #1 concern. They know they're likely going to spend hell in residency only to be followed by a job with frequent call, high malpractice, etc. Why? A decent paycheck can't be the only reason, otherwise there's a lot easier ways to make money. There's a nobleness that's attractive, as well. Medicine has always been an altruistic specialty, the money just helps attract the best and brightest.

On the other hand, I think alot of med students view the dental profession and the students that inhabit the bldg across campus as individuals that chose the easy path. After all, most honest dental students will tell you that they chose the profession for one of two reasons. A: Daddy's a dentist, and wants them to join the practice, and carry on the family deal. Or B:They like the idea of a relatively simple cushy job making 150-200k a year, private practice environment, being their own boss, with extremely low malpractice rates, 8-5p, 40 hr work week, little or no call, etc. I

I doubt you'll find someone with a straight face telling you they actually enjoy scrounging around in nasty mouths all day long. Whereas, even docs who do OB, colorectal surg, etc., that some of us find repulsive, obviously enjoy an aspect of the work, or they would have picked a different residency.

So does it make the med students snotty? Well, honestly, maybe a little, but the feeling is mutual. Many med students tend to respect people who work hard for something noble, and look down on those who take the easy road. While 95% of the population would think the dental guys work hard by very nature of attending a professional school, med students see them how they are on campus, and then have their irritations rationalized when they have a 20 minute root canal that costs 1000 bucks.
It's the difference in the inherent personalities that conflict, and believe me, it shows.

What, go to "lecture" but hang out in the mod at the same time!?!?!? KICK ASS...

Since everyone kinda keeps up with this more, I thought I'd ask here as well: If I take out 30K unsub 4 times (once a year...) and roll my interest back into the total, does that mean my principal when I grad (when the loans are capitalized) will be 141K-ish? Then they figure my repayment schedule based on that number?

Just get a dude in a giant Tooth costume to dash through the room...then watch all the dental students chase after him screaming and waving floss in the air! 👍

Mr. Freeze said:

Yeah, unfortunately they don't broadcast the other lectures. Although to be quite honest, the part that irritated me the most was, essentially getting pushed out of OUR lecture hall, into the mods, and then getting wrapped up in the social scene in the mod rather than listening to the lecture.
Oh well, in the grand scheme of things, it all seems a bit silly now, but at the time, especially when you're in you're first semester, and trying to work out your groove, you take things a little more serious than you probably should.

I can't wait to see the discussion boards this fall, it being an election season and all. You should have seen ours during the 2004 presidential elections. Crap, I thought some people (myself admittedly included) were going to get kicked out. 🙂
It was even rather interesting for the MS1's this last year. Even without an official political season, there was still some rife amongst the masses.

Happens every year, I guess.

Geez, chill people. I mean, it's not like you're under any stress or anything.

So what's the split on politics within your class (liberals/conservative/apathetic/stalinist)? I try not to talk politics too much, but I sure like to listen to other people argue about it. Sort of like watching a football game, but no one ever admits the other scored a touch down.

Getting back to that Mac versus PC stuff a page back, remember that, if you're ambitious, you can now boot Windows on a Mac, which would probably cover any incompatible programs if that's the only issue.

Based on our mod, I'd say prob. 70/30 conservative/liberal, with a rather wide error margin for apathesim, and amonst all the students, a strong libertarian leaning as compared to it's opposite pole, the socialist. Not many of those at OU. A few, but the definnite minority.

Some students take a definite interest in politics, others prefer to shun the outside world during their stint. Those are the ones that make it hard to gauge. Out of the 18 people in our mod, I'd say, I could accurately guess the political leanings of about 3/4 with the other 1/4 up in the air.
As an interesting side note, typically those people tend to become more conservative. Perhaps something to do with the old adage
"A 20 year old who isn't a liberal doesn't have a heart. A 40 year old who isn't a conservative doesn't have a brain."

😉

I'm curious, too. From here, it sounds like everyone is going to be conservative, but there are liberals and moderates in Oklahoma. Anyway, I'm an unabashed liberal, but I don't like to argue, so I'll probably not discuss it much. 🙂 I'm definitely joining AMSA and Medical Students 4 Choice, though.

But there are lots of older liberals. I'm more liberal at 30 than I was at 20. My sister became this huge republican in college -- she majored in business at OSU, and I guess she just went with the flow. Now that she's pushing 40, she's moved to the left end of the political spectrum. So, hey, some of us have different political evolutions. 🙂

Okay, I've got a weird Oklahoma City question. We went to Bricktown Brewery last weekend, and there were all these people there ordering cokes. Seriously, we felt like we were the only people there drinking beer. Why do you go to brewpub if you don't like beer?

Some people go to bricktown just to be there. A lot go there to eat and hang out. If you go to City Walk or Halo or Sky Bar where there is no eating and lounging you will not be alone in your quest for drunkeness. 😉 heheh

LOL, okay. I've heard people like the barbeque at Bricktown Brewery?. I'm just going to have to accept that I'm moving back to the Bible Belt.

Oudoc, I'm in your native town right now. We took a weekend trip to Bend and are going to go hiking around Smith Rock.

I know people go to the Brewery for more than bbq. Okies (beware:gross generalization ahead) are largely baptist. Baptists, a lot like cats, raise hell all the time; you just can't ever catch 'em doing it.

But if you are actually after the bbq, Spencer's at 23rd & Westminster (Maybe Post, I don't ever look at the signs) or JT's just south of Reno & Sunnylane. But I have an east OKC bias...

Ah the memories. I used to live at the base of Pilot Butte and my friends and I would climb up the side and hide from all the little old ladies who used to walk the road up there 🙂.

I haven't been back to Bend since 1992. I bet it's changed alot.
Maybe I'll get back there to vacation someday.

So true. As soon as I read the aforementioned post, I was going to suggest to most worthwile trip to KC, then I scrolled down and saw your post.

Those of you who think it's ridiculous to drive a days round-trip to eat, obviously haven't ever eaten at JACK STACK in KC.

Two words, "Burnt Ends".

MMmmMmMmMmmmmmmmm.... ever been to Aurthur Bryants? It's more of a messy quick lunch since they use butcher paper instead of plates heheh. There is so much to do in KC that a trip to eat would likely turn into a weekend adventure. I think a trip up would be a great idea for all.

We won't even talk about the rather integrated biochemical and neurophysiological principles behind that deceivingly simple act.

The Bricktown Brewery has horrible food. It's a bastardization of Jake's Rib in Chickasha which itself only has fare BBQ but fantastic sides. The Brewery has neither. In fact, Jake's has much cheaper domestic beer that is world's better than the swill that the brewery brews in house. I would eat Earl's Rib Palace by the theater in Bricktown if looking for BBQ in bricktown.

There was "supposed" to be a mailing the week of June 5 - June 9 - but I haven't seen anything yet. Apparently the slow delivery of my acceptance letter wasn't just a one-time attempt to spite me. Anybody get something from school today or last week?
