Ok, I have to say how DISAPPOINTED I am. Though it only took 3 days, you slackers have allowed this normally vibrant thread to drop to the, dare I say, SECOND PAGE on the class thread page.
So, I'm rescuing it. Don't let it happen again, or I'll be forced to... to... well, you don't want to know.

Hey oudoc08, fly much? I would love to get my private pilot license, but I think I'm going to have to put that on hold until I'm out of medical school and probably residency. I'll be an MS1 next year at OU. Any tips for an entering student?

How much do you guys think it will reduce our chances of getting in the 2007 class if we take the august mcat?

It was irrelevent before since interviews started in Nov, but now that they've changed their interview schedule and will begin in september this year I'm slightly concerned.

This new schedule sort of makes OU on the schedule that other schools use I think.

I'm going to take it in august either way because I'm hoping to bring up my score to 30+ and can't do that if I go april...just wondering what other people are thinking about it...?

Which is better...an april score of ~27 .... or an august of ~32 ?

I got waitlisted this year with an august 24...only studied about a week and bit it on the verbal (7).

Thanks
Johnny

You know, I don't think anybody knows yet how the August MCAT will affect your chances at OU next year since next year will be the first time OU is truly "rolling" (assuming you have to reapply at all!). Depends on how many they've accepted by the mid-October MCAT release date. As an in-state applicant, however, my guess is that you'd still get an interview and have just as good a chance as always.

If you want my $.02, however - if you can possibly take the April MCAT, take it. I know you must feel like you need the summer to study - but, keep in mind, that's what every August MCATer does. I'm sure plenty of people will disagree with me and, since AAMC to my knowledge never releases raw scores, there's no way to prove this - but I had at least three pre-med friends this year who didn't get the score they needed in April (and none of us got to study the way we wanted to between work and school) - studied hard all summer for August - and then actually went *down* in August. Of course, scores are always normalized so that the bell curve is centered at 8 - but my personal observation is that the competition in August is stiffer. I can't prove that, can't defend that, but that's my gut instinct.

If you do have to re-take, I certainly wish you the best of luck. Your VR score can vary a lot from one administration to the next - it's difficult to study for VR and sometimes I think just the luck of the draw on your passages can impact your score.

Ah, the MCAT,

I agree that the verbal reasoning is really just a crapshoot. Let me tell you what I did with the MCAT testing because it sounds like you are in a similar situation. First, I took the test in April of the year that I was applying totally cold (don't do that if you can keep from it) and got a 27. I called the admissions office to ask if i should retake. They said that I probably should. I studied a little over the summer (especially physics-there's a NOVA press book that I've got that was really good, but I don't think it's in print anymore) and looked over a little of ochem. The biggest difference is that I was much more relaxed the second time on which I got a 32. I know people who went up in August. I know people who stayed the same. I am unaware of anyone who took it twice (at least in my mod) whose score went down. That being said-I'm sure that a score can very well go down on the August test. Unless they've changed the rules, OU will only look at the most recent score, not the best-so be careful. For your question about whether the test will delay your app. I would assume that it will a little bit. At least when I applied, AMCAS would not forward my application to my schools until that score was processed-the memory is a little blurry, but I think it was mid to late september when my score came back. I don't know if they still do it the same way. My advise on this point would be to email the office of admissions and see what they have to say about it. If you can do well in April, take it in April. You may only want to take it in August if you feel like you can really rock it. I know it's easy for me to say it, but I think half of doing well on the test is your state of mind when you walk in to take it-have some confidence. I hope everything turns out well for you.

I'm not OU doc, but I want to kill some time. My only two pieces of advise-enjoy yourself before fall comes and forget anything that anybody ever told you about medical school. They're mostly lies. Everything that you think is important as an undergraduate isn't and things that you didn't think were important become the most important. Just approach your future with an open mind and get ready to work hard. You're going to love it.

I have been planning on re-taking the MCAT in August, that way I can give the adcom a little more time to decide to let me in. Although I don't think that if I get in that it will be any time before late July, which means I'll already have been studying. I had never thought about how everyone else wants to take the MCAT in August so they can study all summer so everyone will probably do better. That sucks. I think that if I can actually study all summer, than I would do well on the test. Anyways, my take on it is that taking it in April is worse b/c it distracts from your classes and you cannot study efficiently for both. Good luck figuring it out.

Thanks for the feedback guys.
I pretty sure I'll skip the april and just wait until august. I've got a full courseload right now anyway...plus kids and all the other stuff we all have.

oh! and I found out yesterday I'm getting evicted, so I have to move out sometime in the next 2 months. OU is tearing down Parkview apts where I live. lol

I do think if I wait til august I can hit over 30...and hope OU will take me if I get at least a 30 ... I'm not any smarter than the average joe but if I really study my rear off I think I can do it. I've also purchased a bunch of study materials this time which should help.

I'm still going to go ahead and apply to ~25 schools (DO/MD) because I don't want to go thru this a 3rd time. Plus it'd be nice to finish med school before I'm at retiring age. 🙂

I don't know if this will be at all helpful - but I do recommend the Examkrackers books highly - especially if you've already studied the material before. Examkrackers books are like very compressed textbooks - they're readable rather than just "bullet points" - but they definitely cover everything you need to know. A problem I've seen with re-takes is a tendency to focus too much time on the score you need to bring up - and then cratering on sections you did well in before because you're not back up to speed. Johnny, you might find "101 Passages in Verbal Reasoning" to be useful. I certainly agree with the idea that attitude is a lot of it - knock off studying a day or two early and get as much sleep as you can - if you're not at 100% on test morning, you'll see the effects in VR. My VR score was below my practice tests and I know it was because I was so rattled after last April's killer PS.

I'm not worried about getting out of medical school before I retire - I just hope I can get the loans paid back before I'm transferred to the Eternal Care Unit!!

Thanks for the advice, ad_sharp - I do like your positive view! The reality has hit, and it's a little scary. My stomach flips every time someone at work says "since you're leaving this summer... " Oh well, I'm off to San Diego Sunday for a 4-day education seminar I need to keep my CPA license current - thanks to Enron, our required CE hours have gone way up (although I had to do some fast talking to get San Diego approved at the hospital since I'm a short-timer). I'm going to Palm Springs for the weekend - I have to learn everything in glycolysis and the citric acid cycle for my next biochem test, but I'm perfectly willing to do that by the pool - especially since I'll need it next year anyway. This may be my last nice Spring Break vacation for some time!

I did my private pilot work during the summer between MS1/MS2, and have gotten to fly a fair bit since (at least a couple times a month, sometimes more. You'll have more free time than you think you will, so you might consider doing it then. Cost about $8000 or so. Tips? Sure. #1. Keep your priorities straight. You first, school second. #2. Don't buy any textbooks except Netters and Chungs for first semester. #3. If you want to go flying sometime let me know. You pay half, I pay half, you pick where you want to go. (About $60 bucks an hour each). Good stress reliever, and a heck of a lot of fun.

Congrats on your acceptance. Hope you enjoy being a med student as much as I do.

If anyone needs Kaplan MCAT study materials I have 2 sets to give away. There are books, flash cards and a formula sheet. One set I never used and the other has some writing in them.
PM me if you want them.

Hi all,

This may be common knowledge, but I called the Admissions office the other day because I can't make the workshop. Apparently, you can write them and ask for a letter with your application's strong points and its weaknesses. I'd rather make a personal appearance, but its good to have an option!

Me, too -- mine are from 2004, but I'm sure they're still good. If Rachel's are gone, I can give you mine.

On a random positive note, I saw my doctor the other day, and she was very enthusiastic about OU. She had a friend in her residency who went to OU, and she said he was a great doctor who's now doing oncology in Seattle (so, yeah, OU docs do leave Oklahoma -- reference to way long ago argument). She actually thought OU was a better place to go than OHSU. It's sort of cool to hear good stuff about OU docs here in Oregon.

Anybody on here go to the Kid Rock concert in OKC tonight? It was friggin' sweet.

Yeah, the kidrock concert was great, but didn't compare to the Coldplay concert from a few weeks ago. The Coldplay concert was fantastic.

Does anyone know when the reapplicant workshop thing is? Sorry if something like this has already been posted...I haven't had the chance to look through all the posts. Do the people who applied who didn't recieve an interview get to attend this workshop? Thanks a lot!

Workshop is March 23rd from 3-5pm.

You have to rsvp for it.

those on the waitlist did u do the fafsa for OU?
I don't know about anyone else, but I didn't.

I would go ahead and fill it out. It takes about 6 weeks to process, so if you find out you get in at the end of July and you haven't submitted your fafsa, you may not have your financial aid in time. Trust me when I saw the beginning of med school is not the time to be broke!!

I did as well. I don't think that it hurts anything to do so, except maybe to make us look a little presumptive.

It really doesn't even do that.... believe me, the finaid office isn't sending out any memos to the admissions people 🙂

I had thought they (Financial Aid Officers) encouraged us all to complete the FAFSA forms during their presentation on my interview day (Feb 2nd).

Like I listened. Ha!

It seems that the SDN'ers agree that it is okay to fill it out. Perhaps that is what the financial aid folks said, too.

Anybody catch that game today? Man did it suck.

Naw, I missed it. I was at my Match Day party!!

I did catch the lousy last 30 sec. though. Glad I missed the game.

I don't really have any tips, but just wanted to say I'm disappointed how freakin' expensive plane rentals are in the OKC area. 110+ per hour for a 172 and most places I've called have a fuel surcharge on top of that. Daamn!

I'm going to get my instrument rating this summer barring anything disastrous, and hopefully I won't have to break the bank.

The only saving grace is that they are very nice, nearly brand new ILS aircraft for use in training or rental. The company and it's staff are very professional, the aircraft are very well maintained, and it's nice to have access to airplanes nice enough to take your family on vacation with every once in awhile. I have nothing but excellent things to say about Oklahoma Aviation, and plan on doing my instrument rating during my 4th yr there. I'd estimate total cost of the program would be about 8 grand, (not including the cross-country time I'll have to accumulate prior to starting in order to be able to test at the end).
Here's the website if anyone's interested.

Hmmm flying... I hate it. I have an interview for Medical College of Wisconsin's waitlist on the 31st, and I'll have to fly. No me gusta.

Anyone happen to have any kitchen chairs that they don't want any more? Or a washer and dryer? PM me if so. Gracias.

The guy there told me they're getting a new G1000 equipped 172 this summer. I'd like to try it out, but it'll probably be 130+ per hour. 😛

I'm still considering your offer to split the costs, though. 🙂

Congrats Jalopycat! Care to let us know what the Match Day ceremony is like at OU? 😕

Match Day is a little different every year I think. This year we had it at the Will Roger Center on Western and NW 43rd. We had a lunch buffet and a couple of short speeches. At noon we got our results. This year they had our match written with invisible ink on a card that they gave us when we walked in. A bit before noon we each got one of those markers that make the invisible ink show up when you scribble over it. I thought that was pretty clever. There was a lot of shouting and celebrating when we got our match. Also,it was family friendly...a lot of people brought their spouse and kids.

Oh yeah, I matched in anesthesia. I got my first choice (OU). I'm pretty excited about it. Most everyone I talked to got their 1st choice match. If I get time, I'll try and post the match results on the match thread.

Congratulations! Getting what you wanted is awesome...

Does anyone know if it is possible to print a thread in its entirety without doing it a page at a time? Some of these are pretty big, but still have a lot of useful info in them.

Jalopy probably has a more complete list with all the programs broken down, but here's what we all got via e-mail.

Gas-passers like whoa 🙂

What is the "preliminary" designation? I was looking at 2005's list and saw a lot of those and wasn't really sure what exactly that meant.

OK the link is messed up, but it's under General Residency Issues then Match 2006 lists. Sorry 🙁

My guess is that it refers to people that are going somewhere for the first, "transitional" year, without knowing where they're going for the rest of their residency. Could be wrong, though. 😕

That's pretty much it. Preliminary medicine and surgery are internship years for people most likely destined to other programs that start at PGY-2 like Radiology, Urology, Anesthesiology and others I can't think of. 😛 I picked up a copy of the complete list and several of the people who are doing internship years did match into a PGY-2 program as well.

I hope I don't have to scramble or wait out a year when my time comes! If you don't match and can't find a program in the scramble, what do you do for a year? Rethink your choice and just do family medicine in Podunk, USA?

Ok, so I've been wanting to say this to you for a long time... I love your quote (If at first you don't suceed.... don't go skydiving). It makes me laugh everytime. When I posted on here that I got waitlisted, I randomly noticed your quote again and it made me laugh even then. Just thought I'd finally metion it. 🙂

Write a diet book. You can still put MD after your name and it will fly off the shelves!!! 😀

Bump. Gotta keep this thread from falling to page 2!

Does anyone know when we can expect to get financial aid information from the colllege? I am assuming it is before May 15th but I was wondering if anyone had a firm date?

gracias

I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but I definitely got mine after May 15th. Don't worry about it though-- unless you're married and your spouse makes a lot of money, you should get the same as everyone else-- about $40,000 in loans (possibly with about $3,000 of that being some small scholarship), leaving roughly $24,000 a year for books/rent/lasik/backpacking through Europe after tuition/fees.
