when did they offer the bls training last year? i'm wondering if i could do it after i move, or if i should just try to get it taken care of here.

I believe it was late July last year, but I think they had about 3 options for dates.

Johnny OU, I did both home schooling and class. First semester, I home schooled biochem and attended the others. 2nd semester, I home schooled Human behavior, physiology and some neuro. I would review the syllabus and notes from last year to see how complicated the material was and how easy it would be to review the material. If last year felt like the prof was hard to follow, I would go to lecture. If they said it was straight from the syllabus, I wouldn't go. I live in Norman, so home schooling saved me about 3 hours a day.

I take it you're a homeschooler, how's that working out for you?

Whoops, sorry I missed this post!

Yes, I homeschooled all last year. Honestly, I didn't do very well, but it was a very particular circumstance-- I'm getting married in a month and a half, and wedding planning was a higher priority for me than getting A's. I also moved in the middle of the year, so there was a lot of packing/unpacking/etc., and I moved in with my fiance, so there was a lot of adjustment there. Basically, I really had way too much going on in my life that wasn't med school.

All this to say, I really homeschooled the wrong way-- studied MAYBE 3-4 hours a day five days a week, and tried to cram everything else in the week before test block. This was what I needed to do given all my other circumstances, but that's not the way that homeschooling should be done if you want better grades than I have. I haven't decided if I'm going to homeschool or not next year, but I know that I will definitely do it differently once I ONLY have med school to focus on.

With the exception of me (and only because I don't do it right), all of the homeschoolers I know perform at least as well as the classgoers. You have to realize that I'm a particular case-- if I had gone to class and not studied outside of class, I would have done even worse (and spent more time doing it). Whatever you choose to do, you will decide how much or how little study time you put in, and it will be reflected in your grade.

Thanks for the input. I think I'll require an above average amount of study-time thanks to that "doofus gene" I inherited from somewhere.

And CONGRATS on the wedding! 😀

Only med school to focus on... Cute. 😉

I had a question about the BLS certification. I have gotten my First Aid and CPR certifications within the past year at The Red Cross. Do I need to do something else or is that enough?
Pretty sure the Red Cross is enough. I had both last year, but just going with the Red Cross this time. Just as long as it's the Professional Course. Also, when i looked at the Class of 2010's med blog (which I think is GREAT of them for setting up), it says they take the BLS or the Red Cross.

So basically as long as it's the healthcare provider class, it's okay? I agree that the blog is great.

Ok...so where do we get our OU College of Medicine Class of 2010 t-shirts, flags, bumber stickers, hats, shot glasses, salt-n-pepper shakers, and aspirin ?

🙂

I'm in Dallas for the weekend and was in Oklahoma City on the way down Friday. I stopped by Ratcliffe's. They have nice short-sleeve T-shirts for every college on campus except medicine - for medicine, all they have are long-sleeved winter shirts. I asked them if they'd ever gotten short-sleeve. They told me they had gotten them in - and they'd all sold out. Grrrrrr!

Well, theirs are overpriced anyway. I'm sure that shortly after school starts, our class will be more than happy to sell you some shirts for a much more reasonable price 😉

Hey guys. As most of you no longer have to re-prepare for the MCAT, does anyone have any leftover study materials (aka flash cards, practice exams, etc)? I have all of the Princeton Review Books, which, although this is a ton of stuff, more things would be helpful. If anyone does, PM me. Gracias!!!

I won't rehash everything, but I did have a question...

A little while ago everyone was talking about taking all the aid they're giving us; are ya'll including the ALT loans as well, or just going with the 38500 as a diagnostic amount?

Well, the difference (for me at least; I assume for everyone) was only about $3,000, which isn't much over the course of a year. I went ahead and took out the ALT loans because I'm getting married this year, but I'm sure I would have been fine without them (especially without a wedding to pay for!).

$38500 doesn't even cover the full oos tuition. 🙂 Anyway, I think they've generous with loans in that they'll certify up to $17500 for living for 9 months, $2500 for a computer and $4500 for books. So, yeah, to me the generosity is the amount they're willing to certify, not the amount you can get in Staffords.

im going with just the 38500, i am hoping to only spend 35000, but i dont have to buy a computer adn there is no way i am spending 4500 on books.

I don't know as I'd use the word, "generous". After all, you're paying back every cent, not them.

Well, my PC decided life was no longer worth living. 😡 I'm on my wife's laptop now. Time to start shopping for my school laptop I guess. I've pretty much decided on one of those 13" white MacBooks. I know it's kinda small but since I'll be carrying it all the time and only using it for school stuff I think it'll work great.

Does anyone see any compatibility issues I should be concerned about since I'm going mac instead of pc?

And is there a certain date our financial aid gets dispersed?

Thanks,
Johnny

UPDATE***Just talk to Paris in fin aid and she said Aug 15th is the date for dispersement for 1st year MD students***

I don't think you'll have any major issues with a Mac... I know people had them, and I didn't hear any complaints.

Aid is disbursed on August 15. I know that's after orientation, but it's because the rest of campus (everybody but COM) doesn't start until the 21st. So it's a week early for them, and a week late for you. The important thing to keep in mind is that even though you'll be writing a ton of checks that first week, everybody knows better than to deposit them before disbursement. You can also go to the finaid office around the middle-end of July to get a $500 loan if you need it for rent/security deposit/whatever.

my powerbook officially died on me last night after a little over 4 yrs of good service. i too will be getting a macbook, but i am going to try to hold off until august. intel is supposed to release a new chip in august (dubbed merom) which should be a little more powerful, but will also use less energy and will thus increae battery life and disperse less heat than the current conroe chips. im not positive they will put the new chips in the macbook (might just put them in the pro model) but since i wont be around much this summer i figure i will try to wait. just an fyi.

an aside- if i were to buy a 2 bed/2 bath condo what do you think a reasonable rent for the 2nd bedroom would be? i gotta figure out if i can make it happen or if im gonna take a financial hit.

I'll be waiting until August as well...I do have two nickles I can rub together, but that's about it. 🙂 I'm not planning to get the macbook pro...just the smaller/cheaper macbook. But I AM planning on getting it with a built-in sunroof and thumpin hydraulics 👍

I've got a desktop PC now, but I'm drooling over the mac notebook "family"...I've got the schpiel from every kid in the Penn Square store cuz every time I go in I never tell 'em I've heard it before. But I also learn something each time. My wife is growing tired of my antics...She drops me off and then goes to Babies R Us. At least one of us has our priorities straight.

I've gotta take one of those EyeTV hoodis's for a test drive though!! My wife's best friend's husband has a HP media center PC, which can do the TIVO thing in addition to some other multimedia stuff. I was shopping the Apple website with the Big XII baseball tournament going on picture-in-picture style. 👍 👍 With the EyeTV setup you can export what you record from TV onto your new IPod and watch it as you please...so I guess I'll have to get one of those too 😀

2nd page bump.

Also, to anyone that has received his or her financial aid award letter, is there a deadline for when it has to be turned in? I haven't gotten my award letter yet and there seems to have been a mix-up at the office so I probably won't get my letter for another week or two and I just wanted to make sure that I wasn't missing any important deadlines. Thanks for the input.

I love my Mac. I made the big PC to Mac switch 3 months ago and I keep asking myself why I didn't do it sooner. I bought a Mac mini. I thought about going to the Mac store in the mall, but decided to go to ProMac instead. The prices are the same but you get more personal service...ie..you don't have a big superstore with a $6/hour kid selling you computer equipment. That place reminds me of an arcade. People and noise everywhere. The superstore probably has more stuff in stock though. Geez, I sound like an old person.

A laptop is really nice to have during the first 2 years.

Mine said to return it within 30 days of receipt. They processed my staffords immediately after they got it, so it's probably not a problem.

On the computer front, I think I'm going to get a macbook pro, too.

Too many mac people here, how am I supposed to make money fixing PCs if everyone buys one of those stable machines? 😉 Yeah, 30 days from when you receive the award letter. I called because I had some scholarship stuff to sort out and they told me to return it when I could (over the 30 day limit).

haha
We bought my wife a brand new Inspiron 6000 direct from dell about 8 months ago and have already had to send it in twice for repairs. Each time you are w/o computer for a week. Blah.

I'm looking forward to having a mac again. I learned computers on macs when I was a graphics guy...then someone talked me into the windows stuff in the late 90s. I've always preferred macs but rarely could afford one for personal use. Prices have gotten competitive with PCs no tho. 👍

I turned mine in yesterday, which was technically after the 30 days; it wasn't a big deal. Just have a lender picked out and maybe even the direct deposit form filled out, that way the turn-around when you get it is short. You can find the lender list conveniently hidden at mylenderlist.com/ouhsc or something real close...

There was a HUGE stack of the blue letters; I doubt they reach the bottom before they get yours...

I've noticed the crowd at the mall mac store has gotten bigger, although no less "wanting to be quirky", which I'm sure there is a word for, but it is evading me at the moment. I have met 2010ers both times I've been there though, albeit going to OOS schools. I'd bet that the mall store does not in fact have more in stock, at least the laptops. It may be the whole, "There's only one left, you better hurry!!" thing, but they "had" 2 white 13's and one black; I watched all of 'em leave the store in the 20 mins I was there.

Exlaw, look at you with the big spendin' and whatnot on the Pro. I gotta do enough selling on the macbook itself. It helps my wife did a lot of layout and design in undergrad, exclusively on macs...

No, I visited with my aid counselor on Friday - I told her that I wanted to have my letter turned-in by the deadline but she said that wasn't a big deal and not to worry. (It was very embarrassing, too - I had to go to the State Department of Health to take care of some business for work and when I got to the Student Union it was very close to 5:00, so I ran up the two flights of stairs and was so winded when I got to the top that I was a little hard to understand - although she said that happens all the time. )

There's a thread in the financial aid forum that discusses T.H.E. at some length - including all the "credits" you get for on-time payment. One thing I especially liked about T.H.E. was that they don't capitalize the unpaid interest until graduation (once unpaid interest is capitalized, you start paying interest on the interest because it's part of the principal then). I still haven't sent in my lender selection - all this stuff makes my hair hurt. I don't understand why OU doesn't list T.H.E. as one of its "preferred" lenders.
So does anyone have T.H.E's lender code handy?? Thanks!!

I hope it is 876529, 'cuz that's what I put on my award letter...Unless I chose the pseudo-T.H.E.

So, I'm sitting here watching the national spelling bee, and I thought is there anyone else out there who is a big enough geek to be watching this too. And I thought, hey I know where there are a bunch of nerds! I heard that it was going to be televised during primetime today on NPR. Oh yes that's right I listen to NPR.

Anyway, it's great to have a girl win this year! I think I heard the announcers say that the last time a female won was 1999.

HAHA I'm soooooooooooooo joking...it was too easy to resist.

I'm just glad she wasn't a scary freak like that girl that straight screamed the last word. She made me embarrassed to be a former homeschooler...

Is it worth getting a membership to the Healthy Living Center? Will I have time to use it, or should I just hop on the machines in the union?

Mr. Freeze said:

I wish I'd have gotten a membership. Instead I'm locked into this stupid contract at All American Fitness, which is not nearly as cool. The reason I didn't sign up with Healthy Living to begin with is that I thought I'd get by with the Union, but the Union gym is REALLY small, and busy during the times you'll want to use it. So anyway, I missed their no joining fee special, and caught All American's. You will absolutely have time to use it if you make time, which I recommend that you do. You'll be eating mostly pizza and various other junk at lunch, so it's a good idea-- I put on 40 pounds last year, and am having a miserable summer trying to get some of it off. You can always bring your syllabus/Chung's book and read it while you're on the bike or elliptical.

Where can I see some info about the Healthy Living Center ?
(rates/facilities/hrs)

I looked on the website using that search function, but nothing useful came up.

Thank you.
Johnny

Somehow this came up as the first result when I googled OU center for healthy living... 😀

OU CFHL

There's a brochure link that shows the info you seek...

If it weren't for the pool, it would be a lot easier to decide. And the childcare. If they had a rock gym, I'd already have cut 'em a check...

Thanks for the link Mr Freeze.

The program looks good to me. I'm probably going to join and it's only $48/mn.
I'd like to try to enter that OKC Memorial Marathon in April they mentioned on their page. Well, entering is easy I guess, I should say "I'd like to try to complete..." I've always thought it'd be fun to enter a marathon.

Either way, the Healthy Lifestyle Center looks like a good program to me. 🙂

I figure I'll probably end up running 26 miles around the hospital every day during rotations. Does that count? 🙂

haha yep...it counts.

btw...when I mentioned entering the marathon I didn't mean the 26 miles one...there's no way...I'd die. 😳 I'm hoping to be in good enough shape by next April to try for the Half-Marathon (13 miles)... but even that is pushing my luck. Right now I get winded from using a rotary dial phone.

🙂

One of my best friends, about to be a 1st yr dental student, ran the 26 mile marathon a few months ago. He said it was hell and that he'd NEVER do it again.

Nothing fancy?? That totally rocks!! I took my Mom down to the city today to see the new house and took some pictures on campus. I was just thinking about making some wallpaper... you beat me to the punch and did a FANTASTIC job.

That wallpaper is going on my PC at work tomorrow!
