Oklahoma State 2014

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Mine says it as well. I am not reading too much into it considering what the accepted letters say about getting the deposit in asap and over admitting. But maybe both of ours say it because we are super close to the top! 🙂

Mine says the same. My roomie got the same exact letter last year and is now a first year at OSU. I think we all have a good shot if we got the letter with the "favorable" line in it. 🙂

WAAAHOOO!!!! Congrats Cowgirla! :zip::banana:

So does this mean we'll be classmates or are you torn to PEI? Uh, that's assuming I can make up my own mind.

Well, I think OK might be >>>> than PEI. Going to make a trip out and visit, but while I really liked PEI this time of year, I'm not a big winter weather fan, and there were a couple little things about it that just bothered me, plus its a pain in the butt to get to, and $$$$.

Once my head comes out of the clouds, I'll have a bunch of questions for you OK residents, just a heads up 🙂

If I get called off the waitlist at KSU or Iowa right around the 15th, then I'll have some decisions to make. If I don't hear from them by May, I'll go with OK-state. Not dealing with last minute moving/finding places to live/etc. I like to have all my ducks in a row as early as possible.

😀

And thanks all!

Almost a whole paragraph in bold. I'm OOS so maybe it's different for IS. I remember a discussion last year that questioned the shady ethics of pressuring students to send in deposits before the April 15 deadline. If memory serves, most SNDers thought they were preying on fears but went ahead and sent the $500 just in case. It may be a loss if I go to TU, but I am not willing to take that chance.

Yep. I sent the $500 b/c I didn't want to lose a spot if I didn't get in elsewhere. Stinks I lost the $500. I thought $100 would be more honorable to ask..... it's a lot of $

Firstly, I dont know what rock I have been under... well possibly I do, thanks to a brand new 9wk old puppy, but thats besides the point, WTH OKSU? I am really sorry TT... I know I am few days late, but I really cant believe it. They dont know what they are missing and I was hoping that we could be classmates.

On a different note... congrats to the others that got in!!

Way to rock it Cowgirla! So excited for you!!!

Thanks everyone 😀

(Dumb) Questions for those of you in the Stillwater area:

1) How much does it snow in Oklahoma?

2) Whats the town like? Big name stores?

3) Housing...areas to avoid?

The school:

24 Hour access to facilities? Do students get their own desks in lab?
Is there a vet library? Separate study areas for vet students? Vet student cafeteria?

Thanks :-D

I think I'll be flying out there the second weekend of April to see the school.

Okay! First, it snows a few times every winter. Sometimes it snows a fair bit, and sometimes it doesn't snow worth a crap all winter. If it does snow, people drive like dumb#%*s.

Second... we just got a Best Buy! No Target yet, but we're hoping that the census will help us out there. Anything else, I'd be more than happy to show you everything else when you visit.

As for housing, renting a house is best, especially if you have pets. There are plenty of apartments here too.

24 hour access, yes. Personal desks, no. Yes, to the library, and yes, there a few different areas to study in. No cafeteria - vending machines. There was a cafeteria once, and it was TERRIBLE. So good riddance.

Don't worry too much, you'll get a good tour. 🙂 Just let me know 100% when you'll be here so I can schedule you in. :d

Thanks everyone 😀

I agree with TT. Renting a house is a great option. If you're more of an apartment person there are some that allow small pets that are not too pricey or too run down...just dont sign a lease with Forty North (aka murder north) If you're in a position to buy a house at this point in your life, buying one in Stillwater is pretty affordable...however I have found out that owning a home can be a LOT of work...so maybe not a great idea if you don't have $$ to pay someone to do work for you while you study.

Oklahoma weather is great. Winters=cold for about 3 months, not much snow and it usually doesn't stay around long, Springs=sooooo pretty and the storms are AMAZING!, summer=perfectly hot and breezy most of the time, and fall=perfect BBQ and hiking weather.

almost forgot: You're from NY, so you're probably used to good grocery stores. The grocery stores around here ...well SUCK! Produce sections are small and many times picked over, and then most of the store is packaged/processed foods. There are a few local markets popping up in Stillwater, and Tulsa and OKC are only an hour away if you REALLY need something.

I am having a hard time finding houses for rent over the internet... Craigslist doesnt seem to have a lot available and I been looking around not super successfully. Do you guys know how best to find stuff to rent around Stillwater? Real estate agent? Newspaper? Smoke signals?

Yes to both the agent and the newspaper idea. Also, there will be a newsletter thing sent to all accepted students that will have places for rent in it, so be patient.

And if on craigslist, make sure you aren't looking at Stillwater, MN. 😉

CStar management usually has good homes/apts/duplexes. There are other management companies in town, I just can not think of their names right now...

They might not have much up yet, but come April and May there will be more.

Patient? What's that?

Anyway, hoping to fly out to Oklahoma city on April 10th, and fly out the 13th. Will decide for sure in the next few days.

And I dunno, the lack of grocery stores may turn out to be a deal-breaker. I like food! 😛

Do people generally eat on campus, go out for lunch, or bring stuff from home? because I'm notorious for forgetting to pack lunch....

Is it reasonable to rent a house and live alone? Because I don't really do too good with roommates 🙂 I'm kind of leaning towards a 1 or small 2 bedroom apartment, no matter where I end up, but would love to have a fenced yard (or at least be away from roads, etc).

What worries me about houses is having to do the upkeep on them and all that...since I doubt I'll have much free time for that 🙂

Only have 1 small dog right now, but would love to get another to keep her company, so yeah, pets are a must.

If I were you, I would check out the grocery stores here if it is important to you. Most people can deal with it..they just have to get creative, I just know that I love visiting family in Dallas so that I can make a trip to whole foods/central market/place that has more produce than apples, oranges, bananas and overpriced strawberries.

As for 'reasonable' I'm from the midwest where the cost of living is LOW so my idea of reasonable may be different than yours. However, I have a feeling that when you get here you will be like "holy crap, a 2 bedroom house with yard for $650/month, HECK YEAH!" Here in Stillwater you can find apts that run about $250/month and some apartments that run for $700/month per room (and they will place 2-3 other people in the other rooms if you dont have friends that will move in with you). Also, pet deposits can be a killer, most places around here want $200/pet, nonrefundable.

Eh, I'm adjustable. Certainly wouldn't turn down an acceptance because they didn't carry my favorite kind of salad dressing, or anything like that. To be honest, when I'm in school, I'm pretty lazy in the kitchen anyway, so it's all good.

And yeah, 650 for a 2 bedroom house sounds like a pretty good deal to me... I pay 900 for a studio apartment now!
I've been looking at Craigslist and places like that to get an idea of what to expect price wise, but half of them don't have pictures or very good descriptions of what you get for that price.

You'll see what it's like here when you visit. That'll help you out quite a bit.

I used to have an extra bed, but now there's just a hairy futon, so... :d

ETA: Not to sound dismissal (dismissing?), but you can see everything for yourself (and ask in person) when here, and that's just easier anyway, right?

You take all my fun away 😛

But I guess you may have a point

Just to make sure you know, the CVHS office said that they will be having an open house 4/3. It might be worth the effort to come that weekend rather than 4/10. I don't know what they have planned, but if you're coming anyway... I know I'm going. I've got a few places lined up to view and then possibly sign leases on as well. Exciting!!!

I'm an undergrad at OkSU right now and do exactly that. I go home to Dallas and get meat and produce every time I go home, but only because I go home to visit family. It really isn't bad at all living in Stillwater. I love the smaller town atmosphere and prices are relatively cheap. Although there are only 2 Wal-Marts and two smaller local grocery stores, I more than survived and you can always find what you need, it just may take two trips b/c Wal-Mart varies on what they carry.

Also, I live in James Creek right now, which I highly reccomend to anyone. It is on the upper end of the price range of living in Stillwater unless you have 3 people to a house (they are 3 bed/3 bath for ~$1200/mo). Here is the link: www.jamescreek.net. Also there are houses, duplexes and other complexes listed under the Jim Campbell Property Management website: http://www.campbell-mgmt.com/. Just so you're aware, their website has been up and down for maintenance purposes. Most of their properties (including James Creek) allow pets.

For anyone coming in the weekend of the open house on April 3rd, I will be at the Pre-Vet Club booth for the entirety of the open house so if you have any questions, come on by! I'm the one wearing the dorky "Secretary" labeled polo. 😳

Open house is nice, but seeing the school on a normal day is nice too, so don't worry much. The open house activities are more geared towards children. And clueless civilians, not future students.

Well that's disappointing. I mean, yeah for the kids and all, but what about us? 🙄

Y'all get an orientation and stuff, but before that you might as well just take a tour. 🙂

ETA: So one of you is coming 3rd-4th, and the other 10th-13th. No one will be here on a Friday? That's the olny day I'd have to take off in that bunch. Cowgirl, sometimes it's best to see the hospital while it's open, like on a weekday. Crittergal, open house should be enough activity that it won't be a big deal...

Also, faith, tracy, lissa, etc. just let me know if you want to meet up with the lovely OOS ladies too!

Sorry to interrupt, but does anyone know if that 8 year limit on pre-reqs is firm? It sounds pretty darn firm to the point of even telling us which semester we can go back to. There is no mention of exceptions (for things like working in a science field or taking some classes more recently) like some other schools so I'm not too hopeful, but I thought I'd ask!

Just doing a bit of info gathering as I start the daunting task of deciding where to apply!

I was hoping to be able to see the hospital itself on Monday, the 12th? Was going to talk to the school about setting up a tour once I finalize travel plans. So, I'll fly in on Saturday, see the town Sunday, the school Monday, and leave Tuesday afternoon, is the plan anyway.

Can't make it a week earlier unfortunately. Have to work that whole weekend, and its too short of notice to take it off. 🙁

Sent my form and deposit in and got a confirmation email from the school. Looks like I'll be seeing some of y'all in the fall...or the open house. I'll be making my way there on April 3rd to get another look around and look for apartments.

So hrtracy, crittergal, faith, and myself are all from the Dallas/Fort Worth area? Nice! 🙂 I actually live in Colleyville, if y'all know where that is.

If they have nametags at open house or something, I'll put 12T in the corner - lol. Otherwise, I dunno, maybe I'll wear a threadless shirt or something.

Lightreaver, let me know if you want to join the party since you and crittergal will be there at the same time. 🙂

OU's pre-vet club will be at the open house!

which means I should be there in our pre-vet club t-shirts.... so yay I can meet some of you!

They were so good! Sorry non-meat folks.

hey can anyone tell me off the top of their heads the in-state tuition for ok state?? I left my packet at school, and my mom and I are discussing finances before I leave. unfortunately, all the website tells us is "please contact the admissions office for information on tuition" 🙄 too bad it's closed...

well, now that I've made my decision to attend here...
I can't wait to meet my fellow classmates!!! 😀😀😀😀

WTF is up with that?? Haha. And I thought New England was bad...

I love New England Cowgirla. My fiance is from Vermont and we make the trip up there twice a year and it's beautiful in the summer and I even like the winter!

Haha yeah, I rather like it up here too. Would love to end up back here eventually.

too bad I dont like Tufts, or I would have been all set living in New england for ever and ever lol.

And I sent in my deposit today!!

woo hoo! I think I'm sending mine out tomorrow!!

now to just get through this animal nutrition class....

part of me wanted to go to mizzou just so I could blow it off haha

it's not hard persay, it's just the fact that I have 16 other hours which meet every week, and thus I always have homework and reading that needs to be done, and so the nutrition class is always the "I'll do it after my other hw" class

but after I finish my other hw, it's either 3 a.m. or it's the weekend and I need a break from hw.

plus, scheduling a proctor is annoying.

hence why it is the end of march and I will now be cramming it to be finished by may 😀

So I'm trying to weigh my options and I'm hoping y'all might be able to help. I have a ton of questions and I'd really like current information from students or those familiar with the school rather the alumni I work with or their website. So here we go:

1) Anyone know anything about OkSU's student support structure? Do new students receive a big/mentor? Are they able to provide study guides, old notes, etc to their little?

2) Do they have tutoring available if needed? Basically, I want to know that they are committed to helping students who are struggling (not that I plan on struggling, but we all know this isn't going to be a cake-walk).

3)What about clubs or student organizations? I assume they have them, but are they active chapters with plentiful wet labs, lectures, speakers? Free lunches would be a bonus too 😀

4)How about technology? Are most or all of the lectures on PPT, PDFs, etc? Are there adequate plugs in the lecture hall for the laptops they require?

5) Any idea about student discounts at the VTH? What about discounted food, hwp, flea and tick products?

6) Are most of the faculty approachable or do they frown on students disturbing them with questions outside of class time?

Ok, I think that's it for now. I'd appreciate any insight you could offer!

Since these are mostly questions for a current to answer, let me once more reassure you that there will be plenty of people to talk to on the 3rd, and I will be sure to introduce you to everyone I know. 🙂
