Hey all!

So I've definitely set my mind on attending dental school. I'm thinking of a possibility of doing a OMFS residency after dental school. I want to know if there are schools that offer both DDS/MD degrees or DMD/MD? How long are those programs and how difficult is it to get accepted compared to regular DDS/DMD programs?

I know the OMFS residency is 4-6 years but honestly 6 years is a long time for training and 4 sounds more reasonable. So overall I'm guessing the total amount of years looks a bit like this?:

4 yrs dental school + 2 years for MD degree + 4 yrs OMFS residency = 10 years?

correct me if I'm wrong.

can you take a few gap years between school and residency if you match into OMFS? or you have to apply again?

The match is a binding commitment, you wouldn't participate unless you plan on going through with it.

I meant to ask if we can still have the option to apply to OMFS programs after graduating dental school and working for a year or two? Given strong grades and scores on the NBDE.

Yes, you can do that. However, it will put you in a little tougher position to match since most programs now use the CBSE and most programs (seem) to prefer new grads.

Or you can be the lucky smart bastard who goes to UoP dental school (3 yrs) and then do the Case Western OMS w/MD (5 yrs.) - DMDMD in 8 yrs.

yeah some people have actually been pretty bored with general dentistry and went back to med school. Very few and far between, but a few screwballs have done it. I have considered it myself...then immediately figured out I must be extremely sleep deprived or a masochist.
