So I know lots of applicants to oral surgery do a GPR in between dental school and applying.

The new requirements for oral surg is to write the NBME - and I believe you are supposed to write this at some point during dental school. Can you wait and write in during your GPR, and then apply the FOLLOWING year (so potentially do a two year GPR)? I know this isn't crazy efficient, but I just don't see how I can effectively study to ace this test, and continue to succeed in dental school?

Cheers

to me, it would make more sense to take the NBME at a point correlating with your completion of biomedical sciences (Which is after 2nd year at most schools).

yes, that would seem quite logical. I just feel there is a lot of material to be covered and it may be difficult to accomplish within the constrains of one 3 month summer, especially since my school does not focus on a lot of the content that appears to be testable on the NBME...
you are allowed to take the test multiple times, correct? Ergo, a mediocre score in second year, could be remedied later on? (not planning on mediocrity, just feel it might be an inevitable consequence of unpreparedness)

Additionally, don't most students write the NBDE Part 1 in second year summer? Will most students (applying for OMS) write both in one summer (I realize the NBDE is pass fail now, but I imagine one would still have to study somewhat)??

If you do so, it is unlikely you get into some programs ( UW never accepts applicants who have practiced for a while, done gpr AEGD ...etc). On the other hand, there are programs which prefer applicants who have done gpr/internship. These are mostly 4-yr programs with one spot who really dont want to risk and accept someone with almost no-experience out of d-school.

regarding the tests, no-body knows how it will play. If you wait 2 yrs, by then every body has a pretty good idea how this NBME works. If you are the first group, there are applicants with score and again nobody knows how to differentiate these. Overall its a mess

But then even of there is, its not a norm for the school. My point is, some really like it when applicant has done gpr ....etc, and some dont.

no.....

all programs just like good, well rounded, high performing applicants .....whether or not it means they have completed a gpr....

Lot's of programs prefer applicants straight out of dental school over those who have done a GPR, worked, etc. It's a bit counterintuitive but definetely true for many programs.

Fourth year at my school is supposed to be the easiest year so would it be reasonable / doable to write the test August just after I graduate and that way I could study during fourth year. I'd then do a GPR/intern year (will I be able to apply for internship without having written the NBME) and then apply for OMS the following year??

thanks!

You should apply straight out...and do an internship not a gpr
Study starting in january of third year and take the test june/july of that same year while applying

Let any interviewers know that you want to be apart of their program so bad that if u dont match there you want to do an internship

Does anyone have any idea whether this new NBME exam rule will apply to all applicants whether they had numerical scores for part 1 or p/f status? Any official word on this? Besides, for D3 students who are planning to apply next July, does it make sense to go for the exam 1 or 2 months AFTER they apply?

if you have a numerical NBDE score you do not need to take the NBME

Well that's a relief! Thanx. But isn't there like a website for updates regarding that issue? I tried to search the AAOMS website but could not find anything
