I am majoring in Microbiology and at our school that is a really short major to completely, it is not exactly easy but it's not too many credit hours, I also love the major. However, having said how short of a major it is, to the adcoms would it seem like I am a complete slacker if I just have this one major???

Well, you decide what to make out of your four years. Take as many classes as you need to make yourself competitive. I don't think another major matters or not. If you can cram it in, then do it. That was my only problem for doing it. At our school Microbiology is one of the largest majors and I couldn't without going through a LOT of impossible bureaucratic loops.

yep adcoms don't even consider applicants unless they have AT LEAST 2 majors... the general rule is you should do three majors to have a decent chance at getting in.

Adcoms don't care what you major in. Major in whatever you want. If you have all the prereqs, and your school graduates you, you are fine.

Are you doing a B.A? Take the B.S if you can it is more units. Or if you still feel it is too short of a major, then just add a minor.

If you can get another major or a minor, do it ASSUMING (1) it interests you and (2) it won't lower your GPA.

Studying, volunteering, working, joining groups that interest you, etc is more important than adding another major.

Do a research for credit if you are looking for something to take up all your time. 😀

quality over quantity...

Maybe you should get a full house...3 majors and 2 minors
Or better, four of a kind and do a major in Biology, Chemistry, Physics, and Math

If your grades are good (3.5+) and you score well on the MCAT, then it doesn't matter what you major in.

In fact, a few members of my entering class do not have degrees. They went to college to take the prereqs only, got 4.0's and 30+'s, and they'll be turning 21 next year.

I am not those people.

Wtf? What kind of advice is this?? Adcoms won't look at you unless you have a good balance of hardcore science and humanities. If you really want to play in the big leagues I recommend: Molecular biology, quantum physics, Spanish, and English Writing (for those essay prompts.) You should also seriously consider a minor in a dead language.

Seriously, I think just micro is fine. It sets you a little apart from the rest of the hoards of bio majors and if you love it that's great. I say don't stress about it and use the extra time to take a variety of interesting classes, and if you find anything else that you really enjoy THEN maybe consider an extra major or minor. Personally, I would take advantage of your short major and use the flexibility that gives you to study abroad.

Would it be alright if I did an octuple major in Molecular Biology, Quantum Physics, Spanish, English Writing, Chemistry, Mathematics, Aramaic, and Electrical Engineering or will this combination be looked down upon? Should I replace Chemistry with Terrestrial Basket Weaving? Underwater Basket Weaving is seen as a joke major at my school so I don't want to look like a slacker and take that instead.

I also plan on duodectuple minoring in a whole host of things which I won't list here.

Is this good enough for the top med schools? I'd appreciate any help plz. Thx a lot!

Nope.

Then in addition to being doomed to failure, you'll look indecisive. 🙂

I'd stick to gender studies.

i heard you need to have 4 majors, 2 minors, and speak 3 languages....i guess i was wrong

Uhh yeah thats fine if you want to go to SGU. I believe at most US med schools to be considered competitive you need at least 4 majors, 3 minors, speak 3 languages (with at least one being from a 3rd world country), have cured one deadly disease, and published on the cover of one or more medical journals ..... Jesus.

How To Get Into Med School in 10 Easy Steps:

1. Have three majors. The first one must start with the same letter as your mother's maiden name. The second must have no more than 3 vowels. The third has to involve learning a dance that can be learned only in the darkest realms of Africa.

2. Volunteer in a medical setting, but only on days that start with an even numbered letter of the alphabet. Only begin volunteering at times at which the hour hand and minute hand form a 31.459 degree angle.

3. Eat pie for breakfast. Every day. Flavor is optional; though Asian and/or blonde flavored seems to be popular among pre-meds (and thus the medical community).

4. Take the cookie from the cookie jar.

5. Do well on the MCAT, but not too well. You must be able to subtract your age from your score, divide by the radius of you right pinky finger (in kilometers) and have the resulting number match the number of atoms contained in the lead you use (on average) to dot an "i".

7. Put the cookie back.

8. Be involved in research. Preferably in a topic of significant importance to humanity such as devising a method to have your cake and eat it too. Beginning with chocolate cake is suggested as it poses less difficult problems compared to cheesecake.

9. Walk it out.

10. Notice that this is the real step 9. Then ask Trebeck about this "Penis Mightier". I mean, does it really work?

10. By scrubs and embroider your name on them. Include a comma to show everyone that you are saving space for the "MD" that is sure to follow. Demand to be called "Future Physician *Your Name Here*". Acceptable alternatives are "Messiah", "Oh Mighty One", and "Trogdor".

Ummm, I think you forgot something...

11. Burninate the countryside
12. Burninate the peasants

i don't think that it is true that you need 3 majors, at least i hope not, since i only have one major.

honestly, I think if someone were to have one major in business or economics, for example, that would be more interesting to a med school comittee than if they majored in engineering and biochemistry, for example. that said, I think taking the pre-med courses and a few extra biology classes (and getting mostly A's) is what med schools are looking for. then they look at what you did OUTSIDE of class.

which is why your major does not matter whatsoever.

:laugh::laugh::laugh:

These are the best steps.

Good call. Try not to stress too much about stuff like what you are majoring in, remember that gpa, MCAT, and EC's are much, much more important. In all honesty, I don't think a minor does much of anything either ... you're fine.

You don't have to burninate the thatched roof cottages though. You'll look overqualified and your safeties won't accept you..
