I receive emails from the pre-SOMA and I just saw this:

https://www.canvas.net/browse/rowanu/courses/osteopathic-medicine

It's a free, 4 week online course that teaches you about osteopathic medicine and is offered by Rowan University. Today is my first day doing it, and I do not know much about it.

Does anyone know if this is beneficial, and looks good when applying to DO schools? How would you even go about bringing it up? Maybe during an interview when they ask "Why DO?" you can bring this up. Or maybe you can list this on AACOMAS somehow? I'm not applying until next Spring. Just curious!

It helps, but it isn't going to wow admissions...you still need to have a great GPA and great MCAT. Think of this more as a "supplement" or something to add onto your resume but is considered fluff. What really is going to set you apart from other applicants is something that you have done that is uniquely you. Taking a course about DO's isn't really going to say much about who you are as a person. Admission's main concern is 1. if you can handle medical school courseload (through your MCAT and GPA), 2. your dedication to community service and humanity and 3. what and how you can you contribute to the school and how personable you are as a person.

You definitely can talk about the course in your interviews and what you've learned, but I would definitely not include it in your PS.

As mathnerd said, it's not a "wow" for adcoms, but it might help you get a better understanding of what it means to be a DO. Think of like an extra EC or visiting a school open house. Most importantly, it may also give you knowledge and talking points during interviews.
